OAKLAND — While it’s no
surprise disparities abound be-
tween various neighborhoods of
Oakland, none may be more pro-
nounced — and more overlooked
— than the health disparity exist-
ing in some of the city’s poorest
areas.
The increased rates of hy-
pertension, asthma and severe
chronic diseases in certain
neighborhoods certainly have
not escaped everyone’s purview,
however, as some are laying the
foundation for a nonprofit to study
and take heed of some of the most
pressing health concerns in West
Oakland.
“The health disparity is amaz-
ing,” said Mahedere Solomon, a
family nurse practitioner who,
when not working at Highland
Hospital or at her other job at the
Harriet Tubman Medical Office,
is busy trying to create the One
Love Center for Health, which
she hopes will bring health care
to some of the city’s neediest.
One Love is the brainchild
of Solomon, fellow family nurse
practitioner Michele Bunker-Al-
berts and Jumoke Hinton-Hodge,
who serves on the Oakland school
board.

When the Island Cafe became available,
she bought the diner — after marrying
Surkis the year before. They live in West
Oakland. Surkis, 42, handles workers’
compensation claims for UC Berkeley and
assists his wife at the diner, even choosing its
background music.
The biggest compliment from diners?
“ ‘These are the best waffles I’ve ever
tasted,’ ” Holland said. “People also are
amazed by the diversity of the crowd.

Holland will expand her diner by 20 seats

“This was something we
just started talking about,
and we really started to like
the idea,” said Solomon, an
Emeryville resident. “This is
something West Oakland — a
neighborhood that’s been hit
really, really hard — could
use.”
Bunker-Alberts said the
center idea emerged from
thoughts on how to tackle the
health care crisis that neigh-
borhoods such as West Oak-
land face.
“This is a chance to bring
health care to the commu-
nity,” Bunker-Alberts said.
“There is a lack of real com-
munity involvement in the
health care conversation, and
that needs to change.”
In its most ideal form,
One Love would be a clinic
for studying and confronting
root causes of health dispari-
ties in Oakland and advocat-
ing for health equity. Solo-
mon said it would be a place
where people could receive
health care and where re-
search into some of the area’s
most pressing issues could be
conducted.
To that end, Solomon re-
cently received the 2009-10
Pfizer Community Innova-
tions award given through
the Nurse Practitioner
Healthcare Foundation. The
award is given annually to
nurses who design projects
to foster innovation at the
local community level in the
areas of service, education or
research. Recipients can get
up to $3,500 in funding.
Solomon won the award
for her proposed pilot project
“Lovin’ Livin’ Longer!,” which
will be a 12-week study to try
to reduce blood pressure for
10 hypertensive West Oak-
land community members.
“You treat hypertension
by changing your lifestyle,
and we want to see how we
can achieve that change,”
Solomon said. The project
will give her a chance to find
out why some problems are
greater in West Oakland, she
added.
“I can say stress is an is-
sue there,” Solomon said.
“But until I can get people to
sit down and say, ‘I was re-
ally stressed today because I
had to go all the way to Em-
eryville and take three buses
to go grocery shopping,’ it’s
just me saying that.”
Solomon said some of
award money also will go to-
ward helping One Love Cen-
ter for Health achieve non-
profit status.
