LAYING OUT A HORIZONTAL SIMPLE CURVE BY INTERSECTION METHOD

Objective:
1. To be able to construct the parts of a horizontal circular curve by intersection method.
2. To be able to lay out a horizontal circular curve through a location of points on the
curve by intersection method.

COURSE OUTLINE

A. INSTRUMENT AND ACCESSORIES:

1. Engineers Tape
2. Plastic Bottles

B. PROCEDURE:
1. First place a peg at the point where
two straight lines meet (intersection
point P.I.). Then locate tangent
points (T.P.). The first tangent point
is where your curve begins, and the
second is where its ends. Divide the
tangents lines in equal lengths, by
setting out a number of plastic
bottles along the tangent lines, at
say 2m intervals.

2. Give each plastic bottle a letter as shown in the figure below. Sight along line A-A
with an assistant stands at point B and sights along the line B-B. Move your
assistant along line A-A until he also stands on line B-B. Mark this spot with a
plastic bottle. This is your first point defining the curve. (See at figure 2.0)
3. Now repeat this exercise by
sighting B-B while assistant is
sighting along C-C to find your
next curve point. (See at figure
3.0)

4. Complete the exercise for

line C-C, D-D, E-E, F-F,
G-G, and H-H. Finally, use
these curve points to set
out intermediate points
along the curve at 2m
intervals. Inspect the curve
and make sure that all the
points provide a smooth
curve. (See at figure 4.0)
