Inspection:

- Bearing clearance of one camshaft bearing after 15,000 h

- Bearing clearance of all camshaft bearings after 30,000 h

Note:
Camshaft bearings are not subjected to load changes. The load on the bearing occurs
exceptionally in the lower contact area and is relatively heavy in this area. Smooth
overload along the edges is not unusual.

Sequence of operations:
1. Check the camshaft bearing clearance.

1.1 Open corresponding inspection glass lid of the camshaft door on the control side.

1.2 Measure clearance camshaft bearing / bearing neck.

Note:
With reaching the clearance limit the camshaft bearing is to be replaced (MaK customer
support) and the clearance of all camshaft bearings are to be checked. Check running

Note:
Camshaft bearings are not subjected to load changes. The load on the bearing occurs
exceptionally in the lower contact area and is relatively heavy in this area. Smooth
overload along the edges is not unusual.

Sequence of operations:
1. Check the camshaft bearing clearance.

1.1 Open corresponding inspection glass lid of the camshaft door.

1.2 Measure clearance camshaft bearing / bearing neck.

Note:
With reaching the clearance limit the camshaft bearing is to be replaced
(Carterpillar-customer support) and the clearance of all camshaft bearings are to be

When disassembling the camshaft part
of the 6th cylinder, remove only the
sealing flange (Fig. 1/2).

camshaft part by means of disassembly
device for camshaft parts.

1.1.3 Extract bearing neck (3), do not tilt!

Note:

Camshaft bearings are not subjected to load changes. The load on the bearings only occurs
in the lower contact area, and this load is relatively high. Slight overload across the edges
is not unusual.

Sequence of operations:

Attention:
The camshaft bearings between gear of camshaft and rst cylinder must be dismounted
and mounted by MaK after-sales service only!

1. Check the running surface of one camshaft bearing and corresponding camshaft section
from rst cylinder onwards.

1.1 Dismount the valve lifter from camshaft section of the appropriate cylinder and from all
camshaft sections arranged on the right-hand side of the cylinder (04.04.01.nn).

1.2 Unscrew the hexagon nuts (Fig.1/1) on the left-hand flange of the camshaft section (3). Turn 04
free inaccessible hexagon nuts and unscrew them. Remove all hexagon nuts and all studs
(2). Replace two opposite studs by screws (W2) with nuts (1). Adjust dimension s

s = 50 0,5 mm

Note:

When you remove the studs, make sure the injection cam is in vertical position after the
last turn (TDC).

Attention:
When the screwed connections are loosened, the camshaft must only be turned if:

- the valve lifter of the camshaft section to be replaced and all valve lifters on the right
hand side are removed and-

- parallel pin (5) is removed from bearing journal (6) or from the camshaft section
mounted on the left-hand side!

1.3 Unscrew the fixing screw (Fig. 2/11).. 04

1.4 Use a suitable wood block and rubber
hammer and beat out camshaft bearing
(4) to the right-hand side. Line the insi-
de of the bearing shell with cardboard.

1.5 Place cardboard or similar material


around the bearing journal of the cams-
haft.

1.6 Use a squared timber and move the


camshaft by dimension s to the right
up to the limit stop.

shift s = 50 0,5 mm

1.7 Remove the screws (Fig. 1/W2) and the


nuts (1)..

Note:

To check the last camshaft bearing, dismount the vibration damper (Fig. 2/10) (04.09.01.nn)
and move it to the right-hand side as far as you can!

1.8 Check the camshaft bearing.

Replace the camshaft bearing (04.04.01.nn)in the following cases:

- poor contact pattern (running surface; lower contact area)


- pressure on the edges
- scoring

1.9 Check the back of the camshaft bearings for wear marks and replace it, if necessary
(04.04.01.nn).

1.10 Check the running surfaces of the bearing journals of all accessible camshaft sections for
scoring.

1.11 Replace the defective camshaft sections and check appertaining camshaft bearings
(04.04.01.nn).

1.12 Mount the camshaft (04.04.01.nn).

1.13 Mount the fixing screw (Fig. 2/11). Tighten screw at a torque of 04
M = 60 Nm.

Note:

Mount the vibration damper after the last camshaft bearing has been checked
(04.09.01.nn)!

2. Check the running surfaces of all camshaft bearings and camshaft sections from rst cylin-
der onwards.

2.1 Unload all valve lifters and lift them (04.04.01.nn).

2.2 Loosen the hexagon nuts (Fig.1/1) on the left-hand flange of the camshaft section (3) of the
first cylinder. Turn free inaccessible hexagon nuts and loosen them. Remove all hexagon
nuts and all studs (2). Replace two opposite studs (W2) and screw on the nuts (1). Adjust di-
mension s.

2.3 Remove the fixing screws (Fig. 2/11) on the camshaft bearing points.

2.4 Use a suitable wood block and a rubber hammer and beat out appertaining camshaft bea-
ring (4) to the right-hand side. Line the inside of the bearing shell with cardboard.

2.5 Move the camshaft (1.4 to1.7).

2.6 Support vibration damper and camshaft section of the first cylinder.

2.7 Check the running surfaces of the bearing journals of all camshaft sections for scoring.

2.8 Replace the defective camshaft sections (04.04.01.nn).

2.9 Mount the camshaft (04.04.01.nn).

2.10 Mount the fixing screw (11). Tighten screw at a torque of

M = 60 Nm

2.11 Disengage the turning device

2.12 Unload the valve lifter, dismount the supporting device and carry out final work
(04.04.01.nn).

Note:

1.8 Check the camshaft bearing.

Replace the camshaft bearing (04.04.01.nn)in the following cases:

- poor contact pattern (running surface; lower contact area)


- pressure on the edges
- scoring

1.9 Check the back of the camshaft bearings for wear marks and replace it, if necessary
(04.04.01.nn).

1.10 Check the running surfaces of the bearing journals of all accessible camshaft sections for
scoring.

1.11 Replace the defective camshaft sections and check appertaining camshaft bearings
(04.04.01.nn).

1.12 Mount the camshaft (04.04.01.nn).

2. Check the running surfaces of all camshaft bearings and camshaft sections from rst cylin-
der onwards.

2.1 Unload all valve lifters and lift them (04.04.01.nn).

2.2 Loosen the hexagon nuts (Fig.1/1) on the left-hand flange of the camshaft section (3) of the
first cylinder. Turn free inaccessible hexagon nuts and loosen them. Remove all hexagon
nuts and all studs (2). Replace two opposite studs by hexagon screws (W2). Adjust
dimension "s"

2.3 Remove the fixing screws (Fig. 2/11) on the camshaft bearing points.

2.4 Use a suitable wood block and a rubber hammer and beat out appertaining camshaft bea-
ring (4) to the right-hand side. Line the inside of the bearing shell with cardboard.

2.5 Move the camshaft (1.4 to1.7).

2.6 Support vibration damper and camshaft section of the first cylinder.

2.7 Check the running surfaces of the bearing journals of all camshaft sections for scoring.

2.8 Replace the defective camshaft sections (04.04.01.nn).

2.9 Mount the camshaft (04.04.01.nn).

2.10 Mount the fixing screw (11). Tighten screw at a torque of

M = 60 Nm

2.11 Disengage the turning device

2.12 Unload the valve lifter, dismount the supporting device and carry out final work
(04.04.01.nn).

1.2 Mount the mounting / extraction device for camshaft sections on the corresponding left 04
hand / right hand camshaft section and bring it into position.

1.3 Remove the hexagon bolts (g. 1/5) from the bearing journal which is to be checked.

1.4 Pull out the bearing journal (3) without tilting it!

1.5 Check the running service of the bearing journal and replace the journal if there is any
scoring.

1.6 Check the camshaft bearing (1) and dismantle it in the event of:

- a poor contact pattern


- pressure on the edges
- scoring,

To do so:

1.6.1 Loosen the locating screwing (4) and remove the camshaft bearing. Also check the back of
the bearing.

2. Reassembly

2.1 Insert the camshaft bearing and align it with the locating screwing (4).

2.2 Tighten the locating screwing (4) at a torque of

M = 60 Nm.

2.3 Lubricate the outside of the bearing journal.

Note:
The bearing journals are equipped differently with straight pins according to the firing
order and the cylinder to which they belong.

2.4 Fit the bearing journals of cylinder row A and B with straight pins (g. 1/7) according to the
pin code (g. 2 /g. 3) and insert them in the camshaft bearing correct left to right.

respective cylinder. Refer to

1.2 Mount the mounting / extraction device for camshaft sections on the corresponding left 04
hand / right hand camshaft section and bring it into position.

1.3 Remove the hexagon bolts (g. 1/5) from the bearing journal which is to be checked.

1.4 Pull out the bearing journal (3) without tilting it!

1.5 Check the running service of the bearing journal and replace the journal if there is any
scoring.

1.6 Check the camshaft bearing (1) and dismantle it in the event of:

- a poor contact pattern

Note:
The bearing journals are equipped differently with straight pins according to the firing
order and the cylinder to which they belong.

2.4 Fit the bearing journals of cylinder row A and B with straight pins (g. 1/7) according to the
pin code (g. 2 /g. 3) and insert them in the camshaft bearing correct left to right.

Sequence of operations:

Attention:
The camshaft must not be turned after removal of a camshaft part! Prior to removal of a
further part, always reassemble the removed part!

1. Disassembly

1.1 Open indicator valves and disassemble corresponding camshaft door on the control side.

1.2 Disassemble starting air distributor and door of the regulator drive on the clutch side.

Note:
For disassembling the camshaft part of the first cylinder, disassemble, if necessary, the
door of the gear housing as well.

1.3 Disassemble all valve lifters to unload the camshaft.

1.4 Disassemble the push rods of the corresponding camshaft part, lift valve lifters of the inlet
and outlet valve drives off the cam and tighten them up by means of a wire.

1.5 Slacken and take off all collar nuts (Fig. 1/5) of the two bearings of the camshaft part to be
replaced. Support studs (6) by means of hexagon socket screw key (W3). Turn free
inaccessible collar nuts.

2.11 Reassemble valve lifter and check valve clearance.

2.12 Reassemble regulator drive door and starting air distributor, check axial clearance of the

2.14 Check seals and assemble camshaft door as well as possibly removed lifting gear train
door.

1.4 Dismount push-rods from the camshaft section of the appropriate cylinder and from all
camshaft sections on the right-hand side. Dismount valve lifter of the inlet and exhaust val-
ve mechanisms and of the fuel injection pump drives of the appropriate cylinder
and of all cylinders on the right-hand side.

1.5 Disassembly of the last camshaft section.

1.5.1 Dismount vibration damper (Fig. 2/10) (04.09.01.nn) and move it to the right-hand side as
far as you can!

1.5.2 Remove intermediate piece (12).

1.6 Loosen hexagon nuts (Fig. 1/1) on both flanges of the camshaft section (3). Turn free inac-
cessible hexagon nuts, loosen them and remove all hexagon nuts and studs (2) on the left-
hand flange. Replace two opposite studs by screws (W2) and screw-on the nuts. Adjust di-
mension s.

into the bearing bore hole in the engine housing.

2.6 Use the parallel pin and align the camshaft section with the bore hole in the bearing journal
or with the bore hole in the bearing flange of the camshaft bearing mounted on the left-
hand side.

2.7 Use two opposite studs (Fig. 1/2) and appropriate nuts (1) and screw the camshaft section
onto the right-hand camshaft flange by hand.

2.8 Use a squared timber and carefully move the camshaft to the left until the camshaft section
is safely secured by the parallel pin (5) and the recess. When you move the camshaft to the
right you have to support the suspended camshaft section.

Attention:
Move the camshaft gently - not by force! The camshaft gear must not be shifted by the
camshaft section!

2.9 Use Molykote and insert all studs (2) and nuts (1).

2.10 Insert studs and nuts into the left-hand flange of the camshaft section (if possible) and gra-
dually tighten at least 3 screwed connections crosswise at a torque of

M = 210 Nm

Studs and nuts for inaccessible bores can be inserted later!

2.11 Align the location bore hole of the camshaft bearing with the bore hole for the fixing screw
(11) located in the crankcase.
The notch in the normal bearing (if available) is pointing to the top.

2.12 Push-in the camshaft bearing (4) with a suitable wood block and a rubber hammer. Do not
tilt the bearing.

2.13 Use Molykote and insert the fixing screw (11). Tighten the screw at a torque of

M = 60 Nm.

2.14 Insert the remaining studs and nuts into the right and left-hand bearing flange of the cams-
haft section (turn engine, if necessary). Gradually tighten nuts (1) crosswise at a torque of

M = 210 Nm .

2.15 Lower the lifting gear and remove the round sling (Fig. 1/W1). 04

be fully inserted in the camshaft section.

mediate piece. Screw-on the nuts and tightem them by hand. Thereafter tighten nuts gra-
dually crosswise at a torque of

M = 210 Nm.

2.17 Mount the valve mechanisms and fuel injection pump drives.

2.18 Mount the push-rods.

2.19 Mount the valve lifters and check the valve clearance (01.01.01.nn).

2.20 Mount the fuel injection pumps (07.02.01.nn).

2.21 Check the lube oil flow through the camshaft.

2.22 Mount the housing cover.

2.23 Close the indicating valves.

2.24 Disengage the turning device (12.08.01.nn).

1.4 Dismount push-rods from the camshaft section of the appropriate cylinder and from all
camshaft sections on the right-hand side. Dismount valve lifter of the inlet and exhaust val-
ve mechanisms and of the fuel injection pump drives of the appropriate cylinder
and of all cylinders on the right-hand side.

1.5 Disassembly of the last camshaft section.

1.5.1 Dismount vibration damper (Fig. 2/10) (04.09.01.nn) and move it to the right-hand side as
far as you can!

1.5.2 Remove intermediate piece (12).

1.6 Loosen hexagon nuts (Fig. 1/1) on both flanges of the camshaft section (3). Turn free inac-
cessible hexagon nuts, loosen them and remove all hexagon nuts and studs (2) on the left-
hand flange. Replace two opposite studs by screws (W2) and screw-on the nuts. Adjust di-
mension s.

s = 50 0,5 mm

Remove all nuts and studs on the right-hand flange, except for two opposite nuts and

Attention:

1.14 Line the camshaft trough with cardboard or similar material.

1.15 Pull the camshaft section (Fig. 4/3) to the left out of the bearing seats while you lower the
lifting gear. Turn the camshaft section 90 and lift it from the camshaft trough. Consider the
weight (approx. 77 kg).

1.16 Remove the camshaft bearing (4) from the lifting gear, check (04.01.02.nn)the camshaft
bearing and replace it, if necessary.

2. Mounting 04
2.1 Press the parallel pin (Fig. 5/5) into the flange of the camshaft section up to the limit stop
(ident No. see table).

2.2 Lubricate the camshaft bearing (Fig. 1/4) inside and outside and place it on the inlet cam of
the right-hand camshaft section

2.3 Place the camshaft section (3) in the appropriate camshaft trough on a piece of cardboard
or similar material, with the parallel pin (5) pointing to the free end of the engine.

2.4 Place the round sling (Fig. 3/W1) around camshaft section between exhaust cam and injec-
tion cam and fix it to the lifting gear, using the location hole for the injection pump of the
crank housing.

2.5 Slowly lift the lifting gear and carefully guide the bearing journal of the camshaft section
into the bearing bore hole in the engine housing.

2.6 Use the parallel pin and align the camshaft section with the bore hole in the bearing journal
or with the bore hole in the bearing flange of the camshaft bearing mounted on the left-
hand side.

2.7 Use two opposite studs (Fig. 1/2) and appropriate nuts (1) and screw the camshaft section
onto the right-hand camshaft flange by hand.

2.8 Use a squared timber and carefully move the camshaft to the left until the camshaft section
is safely secured by the parallel pin (5) and the recess. When you move the camshaft to the
right you have to support the suspended camshaft section.

Attention:
Move the camshaft gently - not by force! The camshaft gear must not be shifted by the
camshaft section!

2.9 Use Molykote and insert all studs (2) and nuts (1).

2.10 Insert studs and nuts into the left-hand flange of the camshaft section (if possible) and gra-
dually tighten at least 3 screwed connections crosswise at a torque of

M = 210 Nm

Studs and nuts for inaccessible bores can be inserted later!

2.11 Align the location bore hole of the camshaft bearing with the bore hole for the fixing screw
(11) located in the crankcase.
The notch in the normal bearing (if available) is pointing to the top.

2.12 Push-in the camshaft bearing (4) with a suitable wood block and a rubber hammer. Do not
tilt the bearing.

2.13 Use Molykote and insert the fixing screw (11). Tighten the screw at a torque of

M = 60 Nm.

2.14 Insert the remaining studs and nuts into the right and left-hand bearing flange of the cams-
haft section (turn engine, if necessary). Gradually tighten nuts (1) crosswise at a torque of

M = 210 Nm .

2.15 Lower the lifting gear and remove the round sling (Fig. 1/W1). 04
2.16 When the last camshaft section is mounted:

2.16.1 Firmly attach the intermediate piece (Fig. 2/12) to the camshaft section (3). The recess must
be fully inserted in the camshaft section.

2.16.2 2.16.2 Insert the studs (2) into the connection piece between camshaft section and inter-
mediate piece. Screw-on the nuts and tightem them by hand. Thereafter tighten nuts gra-
dually crosswise at a torque of

2.17 Mount the valve mechanisms and fuel injection pump drives.

2.18 Mount the push-rods.

2.19 Mount the valve lifters and check the valve clearance (01.01.01.nn).

2.21 Check the lube oil flow through the camshaft.

2.22 Mount the housing cover.

2.23 Close the indicating valves.

Attention:
The camshaft must not be turned after removal of a camshaft part! Prior to removal of a
further part, always reassemble the removed part!

1. Disassembly

1.2 Disassemble starting air distributor and door of the regulator drive on the clutch side.

Note:
For disassembling the camshaft part of the first cylinder, disassemble, if necessary, the

1.13 Lower dismount device (W1) by means of hexagon bolts (1), roll out a camshaft part to the
limit stop and remove.

Attention:
Upmost care must be taken not to tilt the camshaft part when rolling!

2. Reassembly

Attention:
When you mount the camshaft sections, it is absolutely necessary to observe the arange-
ment shown in spare parts sheet B1.05.04.9.3120 GG.

2.1 Place camshaft part to lower dismount device (W1) and roll to the limit stop in the engine.

Attention:
Upmost care must be taken not to tilt the camshaft part when rolling!

2.2 Tighten hexagon bolts (1) and lift dismount device with a camshaft part to the center of the
camshaft axis.

2.3 Align camshaft part to the pins (3) of the bearing neck.

2.4 Slide camshaft or gear with bearing neck from the clutch side and camshaft from the con-
trol side against the camshaft part until the pins of the bearing neck and the recess of the
camshaft part are securely located.

2.5 Coat the threads of all studs and the seats of the collar nuts with Molykote.

2.6 Insert studs and secure with collar nuts.

2.7 Disassemble dismount device.

Note:
The engine may be turned!

2.8 Insert remaining studs and secure with collar nuts, if necessary, turn engine.

2.9 Tighten collar nuts in steps crosswise by means of special wrench with a torque of

220 Nm.

Turn free inaccessible collar nuts.

2.10 Disassemble locating device (Fig. 2/W2) of the valve lifter of the injection pump drive.

2.11 Reassemble valve lifter and check valve clearance.

2.12 Reassemble regulator drive door and starting air distributor, check axial clearance of the
camshaft.

2.13 Check oil flow.

2.14 Check seals and assemble camshaft door as well as possibly removed lifting gear train
door.

dually tighten at least 3 screwed connections crosswise at a torque of

M = 210 Nm

Studs and nuts for inaccessible bores can be inserted later!

2.11 Align the location bore hole of the camshaft bearing with the bore hole for the fixing screw
(11) located in the crankcase.
The notch in the normal bearing (if available) is pointing to the top.

2.12 Push-in the camshaft bearing (4) with a suitable wood block and a rubber hammer. Do not
tilt the bearing.

1.14 Line the camshaft trough with cardboard or similar material.

1.15 Pull the camshaft section (Fig. 4/3) to the left out of the bearing seats while you lower the
lifting gear. Turn the camshaft section 90 and lift it from the camshaft trough. Consider the
weight (approx. 77 kg).

1.16 Remove the camshaft bearing (4) from the lifting gear, check (04.01.02.nn)the camshaft
bearing and replace it, if necessary.

2.1 Press the parallel pin (Fig. 5/5) into the flange of the camshaft section up to the limit stop
(ident No. see table).

2.2 Lubricate the camshaft bearing (Fig. 1/4) inside and outside and place it on the inlet cam of

or similar material, with the parallel pin (5) pointing to the free end of the engine.

2.4 Place the round sling (Fig. 3/W1) around camshaft section between exhaust cam and injec-
tion cam and fix it to the lifting gear, using the location hole for the injection pump of the
crank housing.

2.5 Slowly lift the lifting gear and carefully guide the bearing journal of the camshaft section
into the bearing bore hole in the engine housing.

2.6 Use the parallel pin and align the camshaft section with the bore hole in the bearing journal
or with the bore hole in the bearing flange of the camshaft bearing mounted on the left-
hand side.

2.7 Use two opposite studs (Fig. 1/2) and appropriate nuts (1) and screw the camshaft section
onto the right-hand camshaft flange by hand.

2.8 Use a squared timber and carefully move the camshaft to the left until the camshaft section
is safely secured by the parallel pin (5) and the recess. When you move the camshaft to the
right you have to support the suspended camshaft section.

Attention:
Move the camshaft gently - not by force! The camshaft gear must not be shifted by the
camshaft section!

2.9 Use Molykote and insert all studs (2) and nuts (1).
Insert studs (2) in bearing journal (6) without using oil or Molykote and tighten with a
torque of

M = 50 Nm

2.10 Insert studs and nuts into the left-hand flange of the camshaft section (if possible) and gra-
dually tighten at least 3 screwed connections crosswise at a torque of

M = 210 Nm

Studs and nuts for inaccessible bores can be inserted later!

2.11 Align the location bore hole of the camshaft bearing with the bore hole for the fixing screw
(11) located in the crankcase.
The notch in the normal bearing (if available) is pointing to the top.

2.12 Push-in the camshaft bearing (4) with a suitable wood block and a rubber hammer. Do not
tilt the bearing.

2.13 Use Molykote and insert the fixing screw (11). Tighten the screw at a torque of 04
M = 60 Nm.

2.14 Insert the remaining studs and nuts into the right and left-hand bearing flange of the cams-
haft section (turn engine, if necessary). Gradually tighten nuts (1) crosswise at a torque of

M = 210 Nm .

2.15 Lower the lifting gear and remove the round sling (Fig. 1/W1).

2.16 When the last camshaft section is mounted:

2.16.1 Firmly attach the intermediate piece (Fig. 2/12) to the camshaft section (3). The recess must
be fully inserted in the camshaft section.

2.16.2 2.16.2 Insert the studs (2) into the connection piece between camshaft section and inter-
mediate piece. Screw-on the nuts and tightem them by hand. Thereafter tighten nuts gra-
dually crosswise at a torque of

M = 210 Nm.

2.16.3 Mount the vibration damper (10) (04.09.01.nn).

2.17 Mount the valve mechanisms and fuel injection pump drives.

2.18 Mount the push-rods.

2.19 Mount the valve lifters and check the valve clearance (01.01.01.nn).

2.20 Mount the fuel injection pumps (07.02.01.nn).

2.21 Check the lube oil flow through the camshaft.

2.22 Mount the housing cover.

2.23 Close the indicating valves.

2.24 Disengage the turning device (12.08.01.nn).

When the screwed connections are loosened, the camshaft must only be turned if:

1.3 Dismount fuel injection pump of the appropriate cylinder and all fuel injection pumps of 04
the cylinders on the right-hand side (07.03.01.nn).

1.4 Dismount push-rods from the camshaft section of the appropriate cylinder and from all
camshaft sections on the right-hand side. Dismount valve lifter of the inlet and exhaust val-
ve mechanisms and of the fuel injection pump drives of the appropriate cylinder
and of all cylinders on the right-hand side.

1.5 Disassembly of the last camshaft section.

1.5.1 Dismount vibration damper (Fig. 2/10) (04.09.01.nn) and move it to the right-hand side as
far as you can!

1.5.2 Remove intermediate piece (12).

1.6 Loosen hexagon nuts (Fig. 1/1) on both flanges of the camshaft section (3). Turn free inac-
cessible hexagon nuts, loosen them and remove all hexagon nuts and studs (2) on the left-
hand flange. Replace two opposite studs by screws (W2) and screw-on the nuts. Adjust di-
mension s. Replace two opposite studs (2) by screws (W2) on the left-hand flange of the
camshaft section of cyl. 1. Adjust dimension s.

s = 50 0,5 mm

Remove all nuts and studs on the right-hand flange, except for two opposite nuts and
studs.

1. Disassembly 04
1.1 Dismantle all cylinder head covers on the respective side of the engine. Open the indicator
valves and dismantle the respective camshaft cover.

Note:
To be dismantled, the camshaft sections of cylinder row A must only be displaced towards
the opposite side of the clutch.

When dismantling a camshaft section of cylinder row B, the camshaft sections remaining
in the engine must be displaced accordingly towards the opposite side of the coupling /
coupling side. The gear casing cover must also be removed when disassembling the
camshaft section of cylinder 1.

1.2 Only carry out operating sequence 1.2.1 when working on the camshaft of cylinder row B.

lever (11) and lifts it securely off the injection cam with a clearance of x.

x = 1,0 - up to 2,0 mm

1.5.6 Secure the setting by means of the second hexagon nut (W2.4) and remove the brass plate.

The camshaft section which has been removed is held in the engine by the mounting /
extracting device.

1.11 Pull the locking lever (g. 4/W1.4) and lift the grip to a horizontal position. Lock the locking
lever in the bearing block in this position.

1.12 Attach the camshaft section to a crane by means of a sling.

1.13 Roll the camshaft section out to the limit and lift it out.

2. Reassembly

2.1 Place the camshaft section (16) on the grip (W1.1) by means of the crane and roll it into the
cylinder crankcase as far as possible.

2.2 Remove the sling, pull the locking lever (W1.4), lower it by means of the grip and raise the
camshaft section (center of camshaft axis). Lock the locking lever in the bearing block.

2.3 Raise / lower the camshaft section towards the center of the camshaft axis by means of the
fine adjusting devices and align the bore (g. 3/23) in the flange with the straight pin (15) of
the bearing journal on the coupling side.

Note:
No pressure is allowed to be applied when pushing together the camshaft sections. If
necessary, optimize the height of the camshaft section.

2.4 Cylinder row A camshaft


Push the camshaft section without pressure flush against the bearing journal on the
coupling side. Push the rest of the camshaft including the bearing journal, axially, without
pressure, to the right (coupling side). It must lie flush on the camshaft section.

Cylinder row B camshaft


Push the camshaft gearwheel (g. 1/5) with the bearing journal (22) and, if applicable, the
cam haft sections from the coupling side and the remaining camshaft from the opposite
side of the coupling against the camshaft section which has been fitted. The straight pins in
the bearing journal and the recesses must hold the camshaft section securely.

2.5 Apply Molykote to the thread and contact surfaces of the hexagon bolts (g. 3/18). Insert
the hexagon bolts (18) as far as possible and tighten them finger-tight.

2.6 Dismantle the mounting / extraction device (g. 4/W1). 04


Note:
The engine can now be turned again!

2.7 Fit the remaining hexagon bolts (g. 3/18) and tighten them finger-tight. Turn the engine if
necessary. Tighten the hexagon bolt (18) crosswise at a torque of

M = 210 Nm

Make the hidden hexagon bolts accessible by turning the camshaft.

2.8 Apply a thin film of sealing compound to the contact surface of the cover (g. 1/2) and
mount it.

2.9 Check the axial play of the camshaft gear wheel (04.08.03.nn). All injection cam rocker
levers must be raised!

2.10 Dismantle all holding devices (g. 2/W2) from the rocker lever of the injection pump drive.

2.11 Mount the rocker arms and check the valve clearance.

2.12 Close the indicator valves and check the lubricating oil passage.

2.13 Check all gaskets and mount the camshaft cover, cylinder head covers as well as the gear
casing cover if it has been removed.

1.11 Pull the locking lever (g. 4/W1.4) and lift the grip to a horizontal position. Lock the locking
lever in the bearing block in this position.

1.12 Attach the camshaft section to a crane by means of a sling.

1.13 Roll the camshaft section out to the limit and lift it out.

2. Reassembly

2.1 Place the camshaft section (16) on the grip (W1.1) by means of the crane and roll it into the
cylinder crankcase as far as possible.

2.2 Remove the sling, pull the locking lever (W1.4), lower it by means of the grip and raise the
camshaft section (center of camshaft axis). Lock the locking lever in the bearing block.

2.3 Raise / lower the camshaft section towards the center of the camshaft axis by means of the
fine adjusting devices and align the bore (g. 3/23) in the flange with the straight pin (15) of
the bearing journal on the coupling side.

Note:
No pressure is allowed to be applied when pushing together the camshaft sections. If
necessary, optimize the height of the camshaft section.

2.4 Cylinder row A camshaft


Push the camshaft section without pressure flush against the bearing journal on the
coupling side. Push the rest of the camshaft including the bearing journal, axially, without
pressure, to the right (coupling side). It must lie flush on the camshaft section.

Cylinder row B camshaft


Push the camshaft gearwheel (g. 1/5) with the bearing journal (22) and, if applicable, the
cam haft sections from the coupling side and the remaining camshaft from the opposite
side of the coupling against the camshaft section which has been fitted. The straight pins in
the bearing journal and the recesses must hold the camshaft section securely.

2.5 Apply Molykote to the thread and contact surfaces of the hexagon bolts (g. 3/18). Insert
the hexagon bolts (18) as far as possible and tighten them finger-tight.

2.7 Fit the remaining hexagon bolts (g. 3/18) and tighten them finger-tight. Turn the engine if
necessary. Tighten the hexagon bolt (18) crosswise at a torque of

Make the hidden hexagon bolts accessible by turning the camshaft.

2.8 Apply a thin film of sealing compound to the contact surface of the cover (g. 1/2) and
mount it.

2.9 Check the axial play of the camshaft gear wheel (04.08.03.nn). All injection cam rocker
levers must be raised!

2.10 Dismantle all holding devices (g. 2/W2) from the rocker lever of the injection pump drive.

2.11 Mount the rocker arms and check the valve clearance.

2.12 Close the indicator valves and check the lubricating oil passage.

2.13 Check all gaskets and mount the camshaft cover, cylinder head covers as well as the gear
casing cover if it has been removed.

2.2 Insert new O-ring (Fig. 2/22) and thinly coat the contact surfaces of the governor
console (20) on the cylinder crankcase with sealing compound.

2.3 Place governor console on cylinder crankcase and tighten with hexagon cap screws (17).

2.4 Lubricate governor drive shaft (10) and insert in the cylinder crankcase from the top.

2.5 Lubricate the thrust washer (19), insert and fix with locking ring (18). Check axial clearance
again, see 1.8.

2.6 Push helical gearwheel (Fig. 1/2) with spring washer (4) onto governor drive shaft (10), coat
thread with Molykote and mount castellated nuts (5).

2.7 Tighten castellated nut (5) with a torque of

and continue to turn until it can be secured with the cotter pin (6).

2.8 Place governor (Fig. 2/16) on governor console (20), the serration of the governor shaft
must easily slide into the serration (X) of the governor drive shaft (10).

2.9 Tighten governor with hexagon cap screws (15).

2.10 Fit governor filling linkage on governor and carry out readjustment of the governor if
necessary (see also governor setting, book C, section 5).

2.11 Carry out lubricating oil flow check.

2.12 Mount cover (Fig. 1/1) with sealing compound on cylinder crankcase.

2.13 Check axial clearance of camshaft (S) with dial gauge on camshaft gearwheel.

Specified value 0.3 - 0.8 mm

2.1 Provide the lubricating oil passage sleeve (fig. 3/30) with new O-rings (31).

2.2 Put gasket (24) onto the engine block.

Attention:
It is absolutely necessary to reuse the old gasket or use a gasket of same material
thickness!

2.3 Carefully put the governor drive housing (fig. 2/23) onto the engine block by means of a
crane. In doing so absolutely mind the lubricating oil passage sleeve (fig. 3/30), gasket (24)
and cylindrical pins (32).

2.4 Insert screws (fig. 2/20) with spacers (21) and screws (22).

2.5 Firmly tighten screws (20) and (22) crosswise.

2.6 Daub the contact face for the governor with "Dirko 610.020". Put the governor (fig. 1/10)
onto the contact face of the governor drive (fig. 2/23).

Note:
The serration of the governor shaft must smoothly slide into the serration of the governor
drive shaft (fig. 4/43).

2.7 Insert and firmly tighten screws (fig. 1/11).

Molykote to the thread and mount the castellated nut (28) together with the curved
washer (27).

must glide into the serration on the governor drive shaft (24).

2.10 Tighten the governor by means of the hexagon bolts (16).

2.11 Mount the spring element (g. 1/7) on the lever (3) with bolt (6), washer (2), distance bush
(4) and a new locking nut.

2.12 Check the lubricating oil flow.

2.13 Mount the cover (g.2/21) on the cylinder crankcase using sealing compound.

2.14 Dismantle the corresponding lateral cover on the gear casing and check the axial
clearance "s" of the camshaft by placing the dial gauge on the camshaft gear wheel (20).
Refer to 04.04.01.nn (only possible with raised rocker levers)!

Target value s = 0,3 - 0,8 mm

2. Reassembly 04
2.1 Clean contact face of damper (1), intermediate ring (5) and intermediate piece (4) (fat free).

2.2 Lubricate the thread of screw (2) with Molykote-Paste "G-Rapid".

2.3 Push new damper (1) and intermediate ring (5) onto intermediate piece (4) and screw in
screws (2) with extension sleeves (3).

2.4 Tighten screws (2) with a torque of

M = 130 Nm

2.5 Mount lateral and face casing covers.

The vibration damper must be replaced by a new one after 15,000 operating hours!

Sequence of operations:

1. Disassembly

1.1 Completely remove the camshaft cover of the last three cylinders.

1.2 Remove the hexagon bolts (3) and resilient sleeves (2).

1.3 Support the vibration damper (1). Pull it off the intermediate piece (4) and remove it.

2. Reassembly

2.1 Clean the support surface of the vibration damper (1) and the intermediate piece (4). (Free
from grease).

2.2 Apply Molykote paste to the contact surface and thread of the hexagon bolts (3).

2.3 Push the new vibration damper (1) onto the intermediate piece (4). Mount the hexagon 04
bolts (3) together with the resilient sleeves (2).

2.4 Tighten the hexagon bolts (3) at a torque of

M = 50 Nm.

2.5 Apply Molykote paste to the contact surface and thread of the loosened hexagon bolts (5)
and tighten at a torque of

M = 210 Nm.

2.6 Check the gasket on the camshaft cover and replace if it necessary.
Mount the complete camshaft cover for the last three cylinders together with the gasket.
