visitKrishnaandBalarama,theywentbeyondtherestraintsofrespectforthemahapurushas.
LetstestthepowersofthesesocalledThavasreshtas(bestofthepeopleintapas),suggested
Sambha,thesonofKrishna,tohisfriends.Sambhadressedhimselfasawoman,andthenplaceda
maceunderneathhisdress,andledbytwoothermenapproachedtherishis,theverypictureofan

liquorthattheydrankonthebeautifulbeachmadethemtolosetheirsensestotally.Inthistotalstate
ofuncontrol,theystartedteasingoneanother,bringinguptheghorypastsandgruesomemistakesof
eachother.SatyakiandKrithavarmaactedasthestartingpointsforthedoomofDwaraka.Satyaki
hadfoughtonthePandavasideintheba leofKurukshetraandKrithavarma,ontheKauravaside.
Theytauntedoneanother,bringingbackmemoriesoftheghorywar.Satyaki,wishedtoenditall,
anddrawingouthissword,jumpedonKrithavermaandcuthisheado.Thefriendsof
Krithavarma,furiouswithSatyaki,pouncedonhimandagreatbrawlfollowed.Pradyumna,theson
ofKrishna,innocentthoughhewas,foundhimselfinthethickoftheghtandwaskilled.
Krishnaknewthatthetimehadcome,andverydiscretelyhepluckedthegrassthatgrewin
abundancebytheseaandplacedthembytheghtingYadavas.TheYadavas,intheirstateof
ignorance,threwthegrassbladesatoneanother.
ThecurseofKanvaMaharishistartedactingandeachbladeofgrassbecameamace,smashinginto
theYadavas,killingtheminstantly.Itwasama erofmomentsbeforetheYadavaslaydead,killedby
theirownclanmembersandinfrontoftheirveryKing.
Havingseenthistotaldestructionunfoldbeforehisveryeyes,Krishnathendecidedthatitistimefor
himtoshedhiscoilstoo.HeentrustedtheYadavawomentoArjuna(Theywerehowevertakenaway
byhillbanditsontheirwaybacktoHastinapur.Arjuna,havingbecomeold,hadnostrengthtoght
thebandits)andalongwithBalaramalefttotheforest.ThemomentKrishnaleftDwaraka,ahuge
wavesplurgedupfromtheoceansandswallowedthebeautifulcityintoitsdeepdepths,whereit
continuestolietillthisveryday.

Balarama,vexedwiththeba lesoflife,satdowninmeditationandverysoonthethousandheaded3/19

serpent,AdiSesha,cameoutfromhismouthandoeringitssalutationstoKrishna,glidedtowards
thesea(BalaramaissaidtobeanincarnationofAdisesha).Seeingthedeathofhisdearbrother,
KrishnabecameoverwhelmedwithgriefandsatdownbesidesBalarama,bysomebushes.
Bytheamazingwillsoffate,thehuntersawthefootofKrishnastickingoutfromthebushesand
assumingittobeadeershotitdownwithanarrow.Theveryarrowmadefromthelonesurviving
triangularpiecefromthemacethatwasdeliveredbySambha.Krishnawaskilledbythepoisoned
arrow,andhissoulsoaredbacktoVaikunda,hismissiononearthaccomplished.
ThusdiedShriKrishna,thepoornaavatarofVishnu,succumbingtothearrowofamerehunter,to
honorthecurseofasteadfastdevoteewhohadalwaysprayedtohimwithaverypureheart.
Gandhariscursehadactedandachieveditspurpose,justliketheLordhimselfhadpromisedher.
