Tricks for Mixture, Ratio & Proportion Math

Amount = (Net Difference Difference of ratio) Another ratio

Example-1: A jar contains water & milk in the ratio of 5:1. If the quantity of milk is more than
water by 8 liters, then find the quantity of water.

Sln: (8 4) 1 = 2 (ans)

Amount = (Net Amount Sum of ratio) Expected Items ratio

Example-2: A mixture of 72kg contains 17 parts of A, 3 parts of B & 4 parts of C. Find the
quantity of B.

Sln: (72 24) 3 = 9kg (ans)

To be mixed = (Net Amount First part of after ratio) Difference of new ratio & after ratio

Example-3: A gold ornament weights 16 grams. The ratio of gold to copper in the ornament is
3:1. How much more gold is to be added to make the ratio 4:1 ?

Sln: (16 4) 1 = 4grms (ans)

Example-4: In a mixture of 60 liters, the ratio of kerosene & petrol is 7:3. How much more liters
of petrol is to be added to get a new mixture containing kerosene & petrol in the ratio of 3:7 ?

Sln: (60 3) 4 = 80 liters (ans)

If a number (n) is added to the numerator & denominator of a fraction, then the new fraction
is= (Numerator n) / (Denominator n) [where n=1,2,3,4]

Example-5: The ratio of two number is 5:8 or 5/8. When 2 is added to both the numbers, then
the ratio becomes 2:3 or 2/3. What are the base numbers?

Sln: 5 2 : 8 2 = 10 : 16 (ans)
