International Workshop
Program overview
Academic year 2015-2016
Sean Scully
The International Workshop encompasses a series of short term periods, each lasting 5-7 weeks.
Students can join the course at the beginning of these periods, enrolling on different routes acording to their
level, age and previous experience:
There are two types of classes on the International Workshop: Basic-Tuition classes and Area-electives.
The first are classes are for all students on each route, and the latter are classes in tools and techniques.
The classes included in the Basic Tuition represent the essence of the scheduled activities.
All students can participate in these classes, even if they take no Area-electives or do not have a studio
space. Most of the Basic Tuition activities are designed as parallel activities for the separate groups on the
course (route-specific).
As a shared resource, all students have access to the same classes in Tools & Techniques, which are all
taught on an introductory level. Students are also very welcome to attend each others work-reviews at the
end of each short-term period.

Seeing art, visiting artists studios and talking to other practicing artists is fundamental
for any art student. At Metfora, we are lucky to know many of Barcelonas young and
established artists, as well as the owners and coordinators of a wide range of different
institutions.
This class is dedicated to one of the most traditional art-school activities: Painting the
human figure. Students work with acrylics with live model, on long and short poses.
Bad painting
Open to all students. Class hours: 3,5
Bad painting was a term used in the 1970s and 80s and represented a new per-
spective on painting as such. We play with our own preconceived ideas about what
good art is and challenge our image about painting as a discipline.
Developing an artistic discourse is one of the main objectives behind the International
Workshop. This class, designed by the Artist Marc Vives, is an intensive module dedi-
cated to new-thinking, reflecting and formulating ideas.

Wood is a marvellous material with a long tradition and a wide range of possibilities. In this
3-day class students are presented with basic carpentry skills and creative exercises of how to
make the most of this material.
Painting with oil is probably one of the most traditional art school activities of all times.
Despite the brief class (3 days), students get introduced to a range of brush tech-
niques, to mixing colours and different ways of working the surface.
These classes are designed as practical tools with one single objective: That students
finish the semester with a printable book of their work and a web-page published on
the internet.
There are two scheduled end-of-term exhibitions at the Metfora each year; An open
studio exhibition at the end of November and an end-of-year exhibition in June.
Both ar big events, although the June-exhibition is more ambitious in all senses.
It is expected that all students show work and participate in the organisation of the
opening and preparation of the spaces.
