1.General

The Rockwell type hardness tester is a highly reliable machine being employed over
a wide range from testing metals to testing plastic, new materials, and other
non-metallic materials. It can easily be operated even by inexperienced operators
without any noticeable individuals errors in measurement.

The Rockwell-superficial hardness tester is almost equivalent to the standard

Rockwell type in its principle and structure.

Since its indentations are minute due to its small test load, it is the most suitable for
measurement of thin metal plates and finished parts, fine parts of watches, clocks,
and computers, and carburized, nitrified, or other surface-quenched parts that cannot
be measured by the standard Rockwell type hardness tester.

Thus, it is frequently used instead of Vickers hardness tester.

Rockwell hardness is defined as described below.

By using a definite indenter, the reference load (98.07N/10 kgf in Rockwell

hardness test or 29.4N/3 kgf in superficial hardness test) is applied to a specimen
first, and a test load (selected out of 588.4N/60 kgf, 980.7N/100kgf, or 1471N/150
kgf in Rockwell hardness test or selected out of 147.1N/15 kgf, 294.2N/30 kgf, or
441.3N/45 kgf in case of superficial hardness test) is applied to the specimen
next, and then, the test load is released to the reference load.

The Rockwell hardness is obtained from a difference of the depth of indentations

caused by the first and second reference loads.

In Rockwell hardness test, its depth of 2 m (2/1000 mm) is indicated on the

display as 1 hardness.

In the superficial hardness test, on the other hand, its depth of 1 m (1/1000 mm)
is indicated on the display as 1 hardness.

This hardness tester has been precisely designed and manufactured based on the
above definitions, and its vital mechanism is fully shielded to keep it free of dust and
rust that may causes troubles.

Accordingly, this hardness tester is very rigid and highly precise for ensuring a long
time use.

3. Features

New type Rockwell hardness tester LCR-500 is provided with a built-in load cell in the loading
mechanism.

* Test loading/unloading speed control.

LCR-500 can select an optional loading speed over a range from 40 m/mm to 200 m/mm.

* Holding time setting in each step.

Initial load holding time control.
Holding time control after unloading can be changed by setting.

* Load control by means of load cell.

Unlike in case of the lever system, no load change occurs against vibrations during loading.
This machine can be mounted easily because of no lever system loading.

* No initial loading operation.

In conventional machines, an operator applies the initial load by lifting the elevating assembly.
In LCR-500, the indenter lowers automatically when pressing the START switch after mounting a
specimen on the anvil, so that it is not necessary to manipulate the elevating assembly during
measurement.

* Hardness is indicated in units of 0.01.

Hardness can be indicated down to units of 0.01.

* A color LCD is used in the operation screen.

A 5.7-inch easy-to-see color LCD is mounted to be able to offer many data to an operator.

* Offset functions
Offset functions are provided for measuring cylindrical and spherical specimens.
These functions conform to ASTME-140 Table 1 and Table 2.
(Setting is necessary before starting measurement) A table is inserted.

* Offset can be done every hardness level.

Offset every hardness level and offset of the entire scales can be done.
Max. 3 scales can be stored into memory at the same time.

6. Preparation for measurement

Mount the hardness tester on a rigid frame.

Select a mounting place free of vibrations and dust particles as much as possible.
Prepare a frame made of iron, stone, concrete or wood, and design it so that its elevating screw can
lower down to the bottom.
Prepare the elevating section and a lowering hole, and the hardness tester can measure specimens up
to maximum 250 mm.
Prepare the hole on the frame to be about 70 ~ 80 mm in diameter and 200 mm at least in depth.
The dimensions of the frame should be 350 mm in width, 700 mm in depth, and 600 mm in height
(assuming that the work is done on a chair).
After mounting the hardness tester on the frame, insert the leveling legs by tilting the hardness tester
rightward (or leftward).
Insert the leveling legs on the opposite side in the same way. Perform this work by 2 persons at least
because the machine is heavy.

After unpacking the machine body, wipe off grease out of the elevating screw bush. Take an anvil
conforming to a specimen out of the accessory box.
Wipe off grease out of the anvil. Secure a space enough to put the anvil by lowering the elevating
screw.
Insert the anvil to the elevating screw bush.
Remove dirt, dust, and foreign substances from the load shaft.
Take the diamond Indenter (steel ball Indenter) out of the accessory box.
Wipe off the contact surfaces of the diamond Indenter (steel ball Indenter).
Put the diamond Indenter (steel ball Indenter) to the Indenter shaft after loosening the Indenter
capscrew.
Then, fix it by fastening the capscrew.
Lower the elevating screw down to a level to be ready for inserting a specimen.
Now, the machine is ready for starting measurement. (All the above preparation work can be done
under the power off condition.)

8.1 Cautions on use
Unlike our conventional machines, LCR-500R is designed to measure a specimen by lowering the
Indenter shaft.

Be careful not to allow the Indenter shaft to touch the specimen.

Measured values at the first 1 to 2 points may be lower than actual ones if the elevating screw is
moved much, if a specimen was replaced, or if the Indenter was replaced. Use measured values in
and after 2 ~ 3 points as data.

In LCR-500R, the Indenter shaft cannot be turned due to its mechanism.

Never turn it forcibly, otherwise measured values become unstable and also, serious troubles may
occur.

-52-
9. Various offsets

In LCR-500R,the following offsets can be done

1. Cylindrical offset
2. Spherical offset
3. Multi-point offset
4. Offset

For offsets in 1 and 2, each offset is selected in the offset selection screen (Z-9).
For offsets 3 and 4, each setting can be selected in the setting screen (Z-7).

9.1 Cylindrical offset

In LCR-500R, an offset value can be added to measured values of cylindrical specimens.
Set the offset before starting measurement without fail.
The offset scale is HRC (diamond Indenter/150 kg (1471N)) only.
Select the offset selection screen (Z-9) from the measuring screen (Z-1).

key (Cylindrical Offset) (Z-9-1)

Selects the cylindrical offset
After selection, the screen transfers to the cylindrical offset screen (Z-10).
Select either mm or inch by mm/inch setting in the screen.
If mm is select, offset is done according to JIS standards.
If inch is selected, offset is done according to ASTM standards.
The cylinder diameter is not converted between mm and inch by calculation.
An inputable range is displayed at the bottom part of the screen (Z-10-8).
Decide the numeric value by S or T key on the upper or lower side of each digit. (Z-10-3, 5)
No value is acceptable if it is set out of the inputable range.
Input 0 if no offset is desired.
After deciding the value, decide the cylinder diameter to be offset by pressing ENTER key (Z-10-7).
The input range is 1.6 ~ 12.5 mm or ~ 1-1/2 inch (4/16 ~ 18/16).
(In this case, the denominator is fixed to 16).
A mark showing the offset appears on the right side of the measuring screen (Z-1-7) during
measurement.

-53-
9.2 Spherical offset
In LCR-500R, an offset value can be added to measured values of spherical specimens.
The applicable measuring scale is HRC (diamond Indenter/150 kg (1471N)) only.
Set the offset before starting measurement without fail.
Select the offset selection screen (Z-9) from the measuring screen (Z-1).
After selection, the screen transfers to the spherical offset screen (Z-12)
Decide the numeric value by S or T key on the upper or lower side of each digit.
(Z-10-3, 5) No value is acceptable if it is set out of the inputable range.
Input 0 if no offset is desired.
After deciding the value, decide the sphere diameter to be offset by pressing ENTER key (Z-10-7).
The input range is 4 ~ 25 mm (Z-12-8).
A { mark showing the offset appears on the right side of the measuring screen (Z-1-6) during
measurement.

-54-
10. Hardness conversion

In LCR-500R, a measured value can automatically be converted into the other hardness.

Caution: Hardness conversion is executed as a reference.

A converted value of hardness is not introduced mathematically. Particularly be careful when
using a converted value.

10.1 Setting method

Set the conversion before starting measurement without fail.
The measuring screen is transferred to the conversion scale setting screen (Z-7) when touching
the blue part (Z-1-12) at the center lower part of the measuring screen.
A present measuring scale is displayed at the upper part of the screen. (Z-7-1)
Conversion can be set from this measuring scale.
A conversion scale can be selected out of displayed conversion scales. (Z-7-3)
By touching a desired conversion scale, its key is changed from white to yellow.
After change, press ENTER key (Z-7-4) to store the conversion into memory of the machine.
The conversion scale is displayed at the upper part of the screen.
By pressing EXIT (Z-7-5), the screen returns to the measuring screen.

11. Internal memory (Number of measuring points)

LCR-500R can save measured data into its internal memory temporarily.
Maximum number of measuring points to be able to save data can be set up to 2000 points. This
internal memory temporarily saves data until the measured data reach a preset number of measuring
points, the measuring scale is changed or the power supply is turned off.
Touch the white portion (Z-1-13) at the lower side of the measuring screen.
(Setting at the delivery time from factory 0/2000)

The screen transfers to the number of measuring points setting screen (Z-8).

11.1 Setting method

The present setting number is indicated at the upper left of the screen (Z-8-1).
Change the number of measuring points by pressing S or T keys (Z-8-7,9) on the upper and
lower sides of each digit. After change, decide it by pressing ENTER key (Z-8-6).
The following method is not applicable.
Example: Storing 200 data obtained by measuring them at 10 points

11.2 Functions of keys

JIS extract
In this mode, measurement is done in 3 scales specified by JIS.
The initial values for each measurement are as specified below.
T1= 0.2 sec
T2= 15 sec
T3= 11 sec
T4= A00.0
S1= 120 mm/sec
S2= 200 mm/sec
Since the penetration time due to loading differs in case of soft materials like plastic, the following
function is added
S2 Unloading speed
initial value 200 m/sec
The loading time and unloading time are measured.
These measured time values are indicated in the test cycle setting screen.
Set the holding time according to specimens, referring to the above measured time values. The
other setting is the same as in the standard mode.

12.2 Sampling mode

Caution: *Data loading is started when the initial load has reached the reference value.
: For the maximum penetration depth, the numeric value measured after the end of setting
the initial load as the reference is output in units of mm.
: For loading data, a PC and data loading software are necessary separately.
: Data are output at the T3 display position in test measurement.
At this time, the machine side operation is stopped completely and CPU is concentrated
to the communication.
: After the end of communication, the Indenter is lifted at once.
The communication time depends upon the measuring time (number of data).

12.3 Brinell mode
In Brinell mode, light load Brinell measurement (5 kg ~ 182.5 kg) can be done. (LCR-500RB only)
In case of our light load Brinell measurement, an initial load of 3 kg is applied first and then, a test
load is applied
For measurement, the Indenter diameter is calculated from a numeric value obtained by multiplying
the Brinell coefficient by the penetration depth when the test load was reset to the initial load after
applying the test load at the 3 kg initial load position as the reference, and then, Brinell hardness is
obtained by its calculation formula.
The Brinell coefficient will be described later.

12.3.1 Brinell mode test conditions setting

In LCR-500RB, the following test conditions are set.
1. Measuring scale selection
2. Loading speed setting
3. Initial load holding time setting/test load holding time setting
4. Hardness value display time
Items 2, 3, and 4 are set in the test cycle setting screen in the same way.

12.3.1.1 Measuring scale selection

1. Measuring scale selection
In Brinell hardness test, the measuring scale depends upon the kinds of Indenters and a
difference of loads.
Confirm the measuring Indenter and load before selecting the measuring scale.
In LCR-500RB, set the measuring scale according to the following procedure.
Press the key (Z-1-10) at the center right of the measuring screen, and the screen transfers
to the measuring scale setting screen.
When the screen has been transferred, the present measuring scale is automatically selected
white.
Select the kind of Indenter to be used for measurement, and then, select the measuring load.
These items turn white after selecting them.
The scale being displayed at the upper right of the screen is switched to the scale selected
just now.
The information of the selected scale is displayed on the screen.
By pressing EXIT key under this condition, the measuring scale is switched to CURT scale.
By pressing ENTER key, the INIT SCALE display on the screen is changed to the selected
measuring scale.
After this change, the measuring scale to be measured hereafter and the measuring scale to
be stored into memory of the machine change at the same time.
The measuring scale saved into the memory of machine remains saved into memory even if
the power supply is turned off.

-61-
12.3.1.2 Loading speed setting
2. Loading speed setting
3. Holding time setting
4. Hardness value display time
Setting of these items is the same as in LCR-500R.

12.3.2 Brinell coefficient

In our measurement in the Brinell mode, the penetration depth is offset to be close to its true
value by using the Brinell coefficient before starting measurement.
Set the coefficient every material to be measured.
In LCR-500RB, the penetration quantity is measured by specifying the initial load position as 0
after applying an initial load of 3 kg.
Accordingly, the depth at the permanently indented position is presumed to be slightly
(corresponding to 3 kg load) shallower than the specified surface. In order to fill up this
difference, the Brinell coefficient item is prepared.
When the material differs, the penetration depth by 3 kg differs.
Accordingly, this coefficient must be set to a value conforming to each material. This is because
that the penetration quantity differs according to whether the material is soft or hard when the
initial load has been applied.
The coefficient being set by our company is input at the delivery time from factory.
The coefficient is calculated as follows:
Penetration quantity x coefficient = Penetration quantity being close to its true value

15. Cautions on handling

Use LCR-500 while taking care of the following cautions

1. Dont turn the load shaft

The load shaft of LCR-500 is constructed to be not turnable.

If it is turned forcibly, a noticeable trouble occurs in measured values.

2. Dont push up the load shaft strongly and intentionally, otherwise a trouble occurs in the load cell to
cause a loading failure.

3. Dont push the front LCD screen by any pointed article. If it is pushed by a pen tip like a ballpoint
pen, the touch panel may become defective.

4. Lubricate the elevating screw according to the working frequencies.

5. If the machine is not used for a long time, remove the anvil, wipe it off sufficiently, lubricate it, and
then, store it by sealing it into a PVC bag.
Lubricate the bush of elevating screw for preventing rust.
Lubricate its thread sufficiently before storing the elevating screw.
Put the Indenter into its exclusive box after wiping off oil.
Wipe off oil out of the Indenter shaft.
Cover the machine body with the attached cover.

6. Dont remove the upper cover after turning on the power supply.

7. Dont disassemble the machine.

If the internal mechanism of the machine was disassembled, the machine is not guaranteed any
more.
Never disassemble the machine; otherwise its accuracy is affected.

8. Mount the machine on a rigid frame.

-75-
16. Troubleshooting

If the following symptoms occurred, check the machine for the following items before requesting our
servicing.

) No power is applied to the machine.

Check if the power cable is securely connected to the machine.

) An abnormal hardness value

A. Are various offset values input? Check if the offset mark appears on the right side of the
measuring screen. For deleting it, refer to various offset items.
B. Check the elevating screw cover position.
If the anvil should be put directly on the elevating screw cover, the hardness value lowers.
C. Check the Indenter tip profile.
The tip of a diamond Indenter may be broken. Check the tip for its normal condition by using a
magnifying glass or the like. In case of a steel ball Indenter, replace the steel ball and check the
hardness value again.
D. Check the anvil surface for scars or other defects.
If it is used for a long time, its surface may be scratched or rusted. Remove these defects and
try measuring again. When polishing the attached flat anvil, set the shaft side polishing face to
[?????____ ] before starting polishing again.

) An abnormal hardness value with a reference specimen

A. Is the measuring space between indentations normal without being short?
Separate the measuring space between indentations to be more than 4 times the diameter from
the indentation center. When a reference specimen is dotted more than a certain frequency,
wrinkles or the like occur on the reference specimen surface due to indentations, and these
positions may be measured.
Prepare the next reference specimen before such a dotting failure occurs.
B. Is the rear face of the reference specimen free of indentations, scars, or other defects? If any,
the surface is not flat and a correct reference cannot be obtained to cause a measuring value error.
Flatten the rear face by using a grinding stone or the like, and then, check the hardness value
again.

) The Indenter does not lower even when pressing START key.
Press STOP key once, and the loading mechanism returns to the initial position.
Then, press START key again.

) A desired measuring scale is not displayed.

If the measuring mode correct?
If the plastic mode is selected, only three kinds of measuring scales are prepared.
Select a measuring mode containing a desired measuring scale.

-76-
17. Daily control

The following daily check is recommendable.

Indenter control
Once every 2 weeks or so.
Remove the Indenter at suitable intervals according to the working frequencies, mounting condition,
and other circumstances, wipe off the entire Indenter with a clean cloth or the like, and put it to the
Indenter shaft without holding it directly by hand for the purpose of protecting it from being rusted.

*Elevating screw control

Once every month or so.
Lubricate the elevating screw with a low viscosity oil as much as possible after lowering its cover.
Dont use any viscid oil, otherwise dirt cannot be removed.

Hardness control
Perform the control measurement by using a reference specimen according to the working
frequencies.
It is recommended to use a reference specimen of the hardness level being used in practice.
For replacing the reference specimen, perform comparative measurement by using two reference
specimens to equalize the hardness level to each other.
