1.General
The Rockwell type hardness tester is a highly reliable machine being employed over
a wide range from testing metals to testing plastic, new materials, and other
non-metallic materials. It can easily be operated even by inexperienced operators
without any noticeable individuals errors in measurement.
Since its indentations are minute due to its small test load, it is the most suitable for
measurement of thin metal plates and finished parts, fine parts of watches, clocks,
and computers, and carburized, nitrified, or other surface-quenched parts that cannot
be measured by the standard Rockwell type hardness tester.
In the superficial hardness test, on the other hand, its depth of 1 m (1/1000 mm)
is indicated on the display as 1 hardness.
This hardness tester has been precisely designed and manufactured based on the
above definitions, and its vital mechanism is fully shielded to keep it free of dust and
rust that may causes troubles.
Accordingly, this hardness tester is very rigid and highly precise for ensuring a long
time use.

9.2 Spherical offset
In LCR-500R, an offset value can be added to measured values of spherical specimens.
The applicable measuring scale is HRC (diamond Indenter/150 kg (1471N)) only.
Set the offset before starting measurement without fail.
Select the offset selection screen (Z-9) from the measuring screen (Z-1).
After selection, the screen transfers to the spherical offset screen (Z-12)
Decide the numeric value by S or T key on the upper or lower side of each digit.
(Z-10-3, 5) No value is acceptable if it is set out of the inputable range.
Input 0 if no offset is desired.
After deciding the value, decide the sphere diameter to be offset by pressing ENTER key (Z-10-7).
The input range is 4 ~ 25 mm (Z-12-8).
A { mark showing the offset appears on the right side of the measuring screen (Z-1-6) during
measurement.

10. Hardness conversion
In LCR-500R, a measured value can automatically be converted into the other hardness.
Hardness conversion values are indicated by the values obtained by adding our calculated
conversion values into the table conforming to ASTM standard E-140 Table 1 and Table 2.

11. Internal memory (Number of measuring points)
LCR-500R can save measured data into its internal memory temporarily.
Maximum number of measuring points to be able to save data can be set up to 2000 points. This
internal memory temporarily saves data until the measured data reach a preset number of measuring
points, the measuring scale is changed or the power supply is turned off.
Touch the white portion (Z-1-13) at the lower side of the measuring screen.
(Setting at the delivery time from factory 0/2000)
The screen transfers to the number of measuring points setting screen (Z-8).

JIS extract
In this mode, measurement is done in 3 scales specified by JIS.
The initial values for each measurement are as specified below.
T1= 0.2 sec
T2= 15 sec
T3= 11 sec
T4= A00.0
S1= 120 mm/sec
S2= 200 mm/sec
Since the penetration time due to loading differs in case of soft materials like plastic, the following
function is added
S2 Unloading speed
initial value 200 m/sec
The loading time and unloading time are measured.
These measured time values are indicated in the test cycle setting screen.
Set the holding time according to specimens, referring to the above measured time values. The
other setting is the same as in the standard mode.
-60-
12.3 Brinell mode
In Brinell mode, light load Brinell measurement (5 kg ~ 182.5 kg) can be done. (LCR-500RB only)
In case of our light load Brinell measurement, an initial load of 3 kg is applied first and then, a test
load is applied
For measurement, the Indenter diameter is calculated from a numeric value obtained by multiplying
the Brinell coefficient by the penetration depth when the test load was reset to the initial load after
applying the test load at the 3 kg initial load position as the reference, and then, Brinell hardness is
obtained by its calculation formula.
The Brinell coefficient will be described later.

15. Cautions on handling
2. Dont push up the load shaft strongly and intentionally, otherwise a trouble occurs in the load cell to
cause a loading failure.
3. Dont push the front LCD screen by any pointed article. If it is pushed by a pen tip like a ballpoint
pen, the touch panel may become defective.
5. If the machine is not used for a long time, remove the anvil, wipe it off sufficiently, lubricate it, and
then, store it by sealing it into a PVC bag.
Lubricate the bush of elevating screw for preventing rust.
Lubricate its thread sufficiently before storing the elevating screw.
Put the Indenter into its exclusive box after wiping off oil.
Wipe off oil out of the Indenter shaft.
Cover the machine body with the attached cover.
6. Dont remove the upper cover after turning on the power supply.
