Summary of State Responses to Presidential Advisory Commission on Election

Integrity Request for Publicly Available Voter Registration Information

What is the request for voter roll data?

The Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity has sent a letter asking each of the 50 states
to provide publicly-available voter roll data, including (if publicly available under state law): Name (first,
last, middle), address, date of birth, political party affiliation (if recorded by state), last four Social
Security number digits, voter history (elections voted in) back to 2006, active/inactive status, cancelled
status, information regarding felony convictions, information regarding voter registration in another
state, information regarding military status and overseas citizen information.

Who can access voter registration data?

Voter registration information is generally designated public record under law (exceptions noted,
below). States have dealt with disclosure and conditions for use in a variety of ways, balancing open
records access requirements with privacy protections for information such as Social Security numbers
and birthdates. Many states provide publicly available voter file data, but not private data that is
exempted from disclosure by law. The majority of states make their voter data lists available to political
parties, campaigns and other third parties for non-commercial use. Some states do not have restrictions
on data use.
