The Fort
Written by
Alfred Gough & Miles Millar
FADE IN:
Poppies as far as the eye can see. A vast red carpet bobbing
in the SUN-BURNISHED SILENCE until an ENGINE shatters the
stillness and a SHAPE MATERIALIZES through the crimson haze.
A MOTORCYCLE.
SUNNY.
Best guess hes 30, although even he doesnt know for sure.
Asian, handsome, a man of few words. His leather poncho
whips like an angry flame as he powers down the broken ribbon
of dirt. He crests a rise and slows when he sees
A SLAVE TRANSPORT
SUNNY
11 DEAD BODIES.
SUNNY
SUNNY
The DRIVER and GUARD are sprawled in the front cab, gutted.
Unmoved, Sunny climbs onto the roof and sweeps the horizon
with the scope until he spots
A TENDRIL OF SMOKE.
Its rising from the depths of the distant woods. OFF his
enigmatic expression as he palms the telescope closed.
CUT TO:
A DOG
Six men -- TENKO, KIT, BAMBI, NED, OSCAR AND ACE -- are
circled around the fire. Theyre Rovers, killers to the last
man. None is over 30. Tenko, the leader, is seated on
SUNNY
TENKO
You lost, stranger?
SUNNY
Rovers ambushed a slave transport
a couple of miles back.
TENKO
Rovers can be nasty pieces of work.
Whats your interest?
SUNNY
It belonged to my Baron.
TENKO
(to dog)
Check it out, Buck. A real-life
Clipper. Unlike you, boy, these
dogs usually travel in packs.
SUNNY
You waiting on that trunk to hatch?
TENKO
Excuse me?
SUNNY
Youre squatting on it like a
mother hen. Whats inside?
TENKO
Why dont you come find out.
ACE
tries again and again and again -- but Sunny is too fast. He
dodges and ducks like a blurring whac-a-mole. Tiring, Ace
takes a huge swing, misses Sunny, and impales his blade in
the trunk of the towering tree.
SUNNY
THE ROVERS
ITS 5 AGAINST 1.
Bambi and Ned hurl axes at Sunny -- who snatches the glinting
weapons right out of the air and slings them back -- skull-
cleaving both Rovers. As they drop,
SUNNY
SUNNY
Kits blade razors towards Sunny, who bends a branch and uses
it to bat the blade at Kit -- impaling him in the chest.
Sunny drops from the tree, his ever-vigilant eyes scan the
camp and discover Tenko has fled. Under Bucks watchful
gaze, Sunny cautiously crosses to
THE TRUNK.
TENKOS HAND
ANGLE ON THE TRUNK: The lid cracks open and two hesitant eyes
peer out. The color of wet jade, they belong to a TEEN BOY.
He observes Sunnys display with fearful fascination. Its
like watching a pro athlete at the top of his game.
TENKO
yanks the axe from the dead Rovers skull and comes at Sunny
swinging. Sunny avoids the first strike, then buck-kicks him
in the chest. The big man flies back. TIGHT ON TENKOS FACE
as he GASPS in pain. PAN DOWN TO REVEAL hes been
SPEARED
A STYLIZED BUTTERFLY
M.K.
Get away from me! I just want to
go home.
A LINE OF BLOOD
SUNNY
reaches for the boy, but with superhuman speed, the Teen
whiplashes his arm into Sunnys chest. Launched off his
feet, Sunny flails before SLAMMING into a tree. As he
slumps, winded and confused, M.K. buckles and passes out.
OFF this mysterious and violent first encounter...

M.K.
rises and watches Sunny drag one of the murdered slaves into
a wide, freshly dug pit. M.K. looks around, clearly thinking
about making a run for it when --
SUNNY
Theres nowhere to go, kid.
SUNNY
I havent been laid out like that
since I was your age. Do it again
and Ill kill you.
M.K.
What are you talking about?
SUNNY
What happened back in the woods.
(off M.K.s blank look)
You dont remember?
M.K.
I remember watching you kill five
Rovers with your bare hands --
thats kind of hard to forget.
SUNNY
Why were you in that trunk?
M.K.
They were going to sell me to The
Widow -- whoever that is.

SUNNY
That ones yours.
M.K.
Her name was Sarah. She liked to
pick wildflowers and was afraid of
the dark. She didnt deserve to
die this way.
M.K.
You dont give a damn, do you?
SUNNY
I could have left them for the
vultures.
M.K.
Yeah, but you didnt want anyone to
know your Barons shipment had been
hijacked.
SUNNY
What do you know about Barons?
M.K. grips the girls feet and pulls her through the flowers.
M.K.
They control the Badlands through
fear and Clippers like you. I
heard those Rovers talking. They
said the days of the Barons were
numbered.
SUNNY
Guess they couldnt count.
M.K. slides the girls body into the pit and lines her up
with the others that are now haloed with flies. Buck
uneasily watches from the lip ofTVthe pit.- For educational purposes only

M.K.
After we bury them, what happens to
me?
SUNNY
Im taking you back to the Fort.
M.K.
Or you could let me go. Say all
the slaves were killed. What
difference would it make to you?
SUNNY
You wouldnt survive a night out
here alone.
M.K.
Id rather die free than live as a
slave.
SUNNY
This is the Badlands, nobodys
free.
Sunny turns away, pulls two jerky strips from his pocket as
he climbs out. He takes one for himself and throws Buck the
other. The dog hungrily snatches it out of the air.
M.K.
Hey! Im hungry too.
SUNNY
Then shut up and get digging.
CUT TO:
SUNNY
Time to go.
M.K.
What about him?
SUNNY
One strays enough for today.

CUT TO:
QUINN.
HE IS THE BARON.
TAILOR
Youve lost weight, Baron.
QUINN
Getting into fighting shape for my
wedding night.
LYDIA
LYDIA
Jacobi sends his regrets. Hes the
third Baron to do so. When you and
I got married, none would have
dared decline the invitation. Of
course, nobody would have attacked
your slave transports either.
QUINN
You offered to handle the wedding
arrangements, Lydia, but if its
causing you too much distress...
LYDIA
(cutting him off)
Please, Im beyond jealousy at this
point. Marry your child bride.

QUINN
Then whats weighing on you?
LYDIA
Id hoped we could use this wedding
to reassert your dominion over the
other Barons. But I fear its had
the opposite effect.
QUINN
I still know every move those sons
of bitches make.
LYDIA
I think its time you started
grooming Ryder.
QUINN
You planning a wedding or a wake?
LYDIA
Hes going to succeed you one day.
He deserves the benefit of your
wisdom.
QUINN
Even if I considered that, Sunny is
better suited than Ryder.
LYDIA
Sunnys a Clipper, not flesh and
blood.
QUINN
Powers not inherited, its taken.
LYDIA
Perhaps youd like Ryder to execute
you on your birthday. Thats how
you assumed the title -- by
depriving your Baron of his head.
QUINN
Im not going anywhere.

LYDIA
Another headache?
QUINN
I blame this one on you. Now leave
me in peace.
She tenderly pecks his cheek and exits. Quinn opens a pewter
box on his desk. Its embossed with his armadillo insignia.
Inside is a glass pipe and a stick of opium. However, before
he can light up, he hears the RUMBLE of Sunnys motorcycle.
CUT TO:
RYDER
Where was Sunny?
QUINN
Dealing with the Rover problem.
RYDER
I was handling that.
QUINN
Four transports ambushed in the
last month -- all evidence to the
contrary, son.
QUINN
Is it done?
RYDER
You sent in your attack dog to rip
out their throats -- we still dont

know who hired them.
14.
QUINN
It was The Widow.
SUNNY
Rovers killed all the slaves just
like the other attacks. Except for
this boy.
QUINN
What makes him so special?
SUNNY
As far as I can tell, nothing.
QUINN
Whats your name, son?
M.K.
M.K.
QUINN
Why didnt the Rovers slit your
throat?
M.K.
Im lucky I guess.
QUINN
Theres no such thing as luck in
the Badlands.
QUINN
(re: M.K.)
Take him away and put him with the
others.
M.K.
Im not your slave!
QUINN
Young and angry, we can work with
that.
(to M.K.)
Better hope that luck of yours
doesnt run out.
RYDER
Another Baron is moving against us.
You need to retaliate.
QUINN
The Widows claim on that title is
questionable.
RYDER
Her husband is rotting in his grave
and she murdered her only sons and
heirs -- theres no question in her
mind. Shell take your inaction as
a sign of weakness.
SUNNY
Theres a traitor in the Fort. She
knew our schedules, shell know if
were going to strike.
QUINN
Sunnys right.
RYDER
You need to send her a message.
QUINN
Ryder, shes dusted off the board
and made her first move. But Ive
been playing this game a lot
longer. The key is patience.
CUT TO:
AJAX
That guys a psycho.
M.K. turns to AJAX, the teen boy next to him. Ajax is older,
dirty blond hair, a physique honed by hard farm labor.
AJAX
He clipped my pa for stealing and
took me to pay off the debt.
Whats your story?
M.K.
I dont have one.
M.K.
Dont touch that!
THE PENDANT
M.K.
Thats mine! Give it back.
SUNNY
Get back in line.
TV Calling - For educational purposes only
Devastated, M.K. turns and joins the others.
17.
SUNNY
Get them dressed and to the chapel.
RYDER
You need to reconsider your
position for my fathers sake.
Convince him to move against The
Widow before its too late. She
would never do something this bold
without being sanctioned by the
other five Barons.
SUNNY
Your father is too powerful, they
wouldnt risk that.
RYDER
Dont you get it, Sunny? Hes the
past, the only thing that lives
there are cobwebs and corpses. Im
the future. Are you on my side or
not?
RYDER
What did you take from that boy?
SUNNY
Nothing.
RYDER
Thats for me to decide. Obey like
the good dog you are.
Sunny holds out his palm. Ryder scoops up the pendant. OFF
Sunny, watching as Ryder strides off...
CUT TO:
QUINN
The Kingdom of Heaven sufferth
violence and the violent bear it
away.
QUINN
Thats the only verse in this whole
damn book that makes any sense to
me. Long ago people gathered in
this space to worship a god. Im
here to tell you that there is no
god, no mercy and no salvation in
the Badlands.
He steps down and approaches M.K., Ajax and the other teen
boys from the pool who are seated in the front pew.
QUINN
Boys, Im going to speak plainly.
Most of you will spend your
existence toiling in the fields.
Disease, accidents and the cruel
climate will claim most of you by
the time youre 25.
QUINN
Before you fall into a pit of
despair, Im going to offer you
something no god ever would -- a
fighting chance. The strongest
among you will get the opportunity
to train as one of my Clippers.
QUINN
No doubt most of you see Clippers
as cold, heartless killers, but the
men that fill this sanctuary are
more than that. Theyre my family.
Which means they get the best of
everything -- food, weapons, pussy.
QUINN
Like every family, there is a
favorite son. Id like you to meet
mine.
QUINN
Sunny, get up here. Come on, dont
be shy.
QUINN
Quite a sight, isnt it?
(beat)
448. Thats how many little black
lines Sunny has inked on his skin.
Each of those marks represents a
life. A life that Sunny has taken
without regret, without remorse --
because he kills for one reason.
What is it, Sunny?
SUNNY
To protect your interests, Baron.
QUINN
Thats right, 448 souls, all taken
for me. No Clipper in the Badlands
is more feared... or more loyal.
The man standing here is a far cry
from the miserable whelp I laid
eyes on all those years ago. Sunny
was found naked and shivering down
by the Rabbit River. No parents,
no past, no name. I figured if the
Badlands hadnt killed him -- there
must be a strength inside him. So
I took him in. Raised him from
runt to Colt to Clipper. Forged
him into the man you see today.
QUINN
Maybe the boy who will follow in
his footsteps is in this hallowed
room.
(pointing)
Is it you?
(pointing at another)
You?
(pointing at M.K.)
Or you?
QUINN
Now I ask, do you want to be part
of my family?
BOYS
Yes, Baron.
QUINN
Do you want the best of everything?
BOYS
Yes, Baron.
QUINN
Do you want to kill in my name?
BOYS
Yes, Baron!
QUINN
Your fates will be determined
tomorrow. Remember, the violent
bear it away.

Im Bale.

How long have you been here?
BALE
A week.
M.K.
Whats that building?
BALE
Infirmary.
M.K.
Its the only one with no bars on
the windows.
BALE
You planning to escape?
(off M.K.s shrug)
There are only two ways out of the
Fort -- in a slave transport or on
a body cart. Why would you want to
leave?
M.K.
How come you want to stay?

BALE
My folks died in the field. Thats
not going to be my life. You heard
the Baron, Clippers get the best of
everything.
BALE
I want to be like that guy.
M.K.
Trust me, you dont. How do you
get selected?
BALE
They pair us up. Put us in the
fighting pit. The winner becomes a
Colt and gets trained by a Clipper.
The loser goes to the fields -- no
second chances.
M.K.
I think I know how we can both get
what we want.

It was so tragic when her illness

JADE
Thank you again. I want you to

here in the main house.
LYDIA
Thats very kind, but I didnt
realize I was going anywhere.
JADE
I assumed after the wedding youd
move into one of the cottages.
LYDIA
I remember when you were just knee
high. Old Tilda would perch you on
a stool and youd help her pluck
the chickens. I used to see you
running around the yard with
feathers still stuck in your hair.
She reaches over and slides a stray curl thats fallen across
Jades face. Jade blushes at the unwanted act of intimacy.
LYDIA
Jade, I want us to become great
friends. Being the Barons wife
can be desperately lonely. Look at
Beatrice. She let the pressures
eat away at her. I dont want that
to happen to you. Theres so much
we can learn from each other.
JADE
What could I possibly teach you?
LYDIA
Im a simple preachers daughter.
Everything I know I taught myself.
I envy your skill in the kitchen.

LYDIA (CONT'D)
Perhaps you could show me how to
prepare these birds. You start by
snapping the neck, right?
JADE
Tilda always did that. It made me
uncomfortable.
LYDIA
I had no idea, Im sorry. I guess
sharing the Barons bed all these
years has made me unsentimental.
Dont give it another thought.
JADE
Wait. Ill show you.
Lydia turns back, smiling, and passes her the bird. Jades
hand caresses the peacock until, with an expert twist, she
SNAPS its neck. She cradles the bird to her chest like a
mother holding a stillborn. Lydia beams with maternal pride.
LYDIA
You make it look so easy.
LYDIA
I have a feeling, Jade, we are
going to get along like two bees in
a honey pot.

about your home. Youre never
going to see them again.
M.K.
Im not like the others. Im not
afraid of you.
SUNNY
Go away. Im eating.
M.K.
Nobody else in here has thrown you
20 feet. Thats why you lied to
your Baron about me, isnt it?
SUNNY
Learn to shut up!
M.K.
Or what? Ill become another
little black line on your back.
Sunny releases his foot, then turns back to his food. M.K.
rises, ignores the smirking stares of his peers and exits.
CUT TO:

Im pissing myself.
As Ajax continues the attack, TIME SLOWS AND THE SOUND FADES.

another transformation. His eyes snap open, revealing they
are eerie white orbs. This time WE SEE everything from his

From the stink, I fear youre

its a battlefield.
(lifting her chin)
Jade, I can wick any woman I want.
But Ive only chosen three to marry

JADE
I thought it was love.
QUINN
No, you didnt.
JADE
Because you know well protect you

I dont involve myself in household

WALDO
Steer clear, thats my advice.
After the ordeal that boy endured,
all the mercys been sucked out of
his bones.
His mind made up, M.K. jumps off the sill, headed for the
house. Waldo calls after him, his voice lowered to a hiss.
WALDO
Theres a door by the coal cellar,

his arm and spins him around. Wide-eyed, he looks up into
Ryders face. Ryder wrenches the pendant from his grasp.

Fine, Ill take him out back so he
wont bleed out over your precious

someone always ends up hurt... or
worse.
M.K.
Im the reason my mom and I were
forced to leave our home.
SUNNY
Where are you from?
M.K.
Nirvana. Not that I remember it.
SUNNY
Thats because it doesnt exist.
Theres no shining city outside the
Badlands. Its a fairy tale they
tell children.
M.K.
My mother wouldnt lie to me! She
was a good person. Not like you...
or me. She said if I could tame my
darkness, we could return and
theyd let us stay.
SUNNY
I would never try and get back to a
place that threw me away.
M.K.
Youd rather stay here where nobody
gives a damn if you live or die.
SUNNY
At least my home is real.
M.K.
This isnt your home -- its your
cage. You just cant see the bars.
The words hit their mark, a rattled Sunny turns and exits.
OFF M.K. listening to the FADING ECHO OF SUNNYS BOOTS...
CUT TO:
DR. BROOKS
Baron...
TV Calling - For educational purposes only
45.
QUINN
Evening, Doc. Sorry to intrude so
late.
CUT TO:
DR. BROOKS
How long have you had these
headaches?
QUINN
A couple of months, but theyre
getting worse.
DR. BROOKS
Hold still.
DR. BROOKS
You can get dressed now.
QUINN
That was a lot less painless than
Im sure my wedding photo is going
to be.
DR. BROOKS
The plate will take a couple of
hours to develop. I can bring it
around to the Fort tomorrow and we
can discuss the result.
QUINN
Do it now. Ill wait.
CUT TO:
LYDIA
(urgent whisper)
Come with me. Right now.
LYDIA
Run. Dont look back.
M.K.
Why are you helping me?
LYDIA
Because I want you as far away from
here as possible. Youre more
dangerous than any Barons bullet
or Clippers blade.
(pushing him)
Now go!
JADE
Do you make it a habit of freeing
slaves in the middle of the night?
LYDIA
I dont answer to you.
JADE
Then perhaps you can explain it to
the Baron.
LYDIA
We dont need to trouble him with
this. Hes got a lot weighing on
his mind.
TV Calling - For educational purposes only
She jerks her arm free, coldly regards her rival.
47.
LYDIA
What do you want?
JADE
The day after the wedding, youre
moving into a cottage. Tell the
Baron you want to give him and his
new bride some privacy.
LYDIA
Hell never believe that.
JADE
I dont care what he believes as
long as your bed is stripped and
your bags are packed.
CUT TO:
MRS. BROOKS
Are you sure I cant tempt you?
QUINN
Dont play cards, Doc, youve got a
terrible poker face. How long have
I got?
DR. BROOKS
End of the year. No longer.
DR. BROOKS
Im sorry, Baron. I promise well
be discreet and Ill do everything
I can to make you comfortable.
TV Calling - For educational purposes only
48.
QUINN
Youre a man of integrity. I
appreciate that, Doc.
(beat)
Im ready for that pie now.
M.K. sprints through the dark, arms pumping, but slows when
he sees the lights of Dr. Brooks house up ahead. He takes
cover behind a tree and watches Quinn stride out.
THE BARON
M.K.
Hello? Anybody here?
WHAT HE SEES: Dr. and Mrs. Brooks slumped on the table, their
throats slit from ear to ear.
M.K. bursts from the house like a banshee unleashed from the
bowels of hell. As he makes his escape...
FADE OUT.
ACT FIVE
FADE IN:
SUNNY
What happened to the boy?
PETRI
Ask the Baron. Hes looking for
you. Ryders got him all worked up
about something.
CUT TO:
QUINN
There you are. Apparently, Ryder
came by some information last
night. But he refused to share it
until you got here. Needless to
say, my curiosity is piqued.
RYDER
Its about The Widow.
RYDER
Shes running a slave depot on the
other side of Compton Ridge, in our
disputed territory.
SUNNY
Our patrols havent reported
anything. Who told you?
RYDER
Sex isnt the only thing you buy in
a doll house.
TV Calling - For educational purposes only
Ryder sits back, cocky.
50.
RYDER
I think we should raid it, send a
message that nobody defies the
Fort.
(to Sunny, goading)
What do you say, Sunny?
SUNNY
I agree.
QUINN
I better grab my coat -- because
hell just froze over. This is the
first time you two have seen eye to
eye on anything.
RYDER
Sunny and I will scout it out.
QUINN
Consider yourselves sanctioned.
RYDER
Arent you going to thank me? I
kept my trap shut about your little
midnight rendezvous with The Widow.
SUNNY
I have nothing to hide.
RYDER
If you didnt, you wouldnt have
agreed with me. Looks like Ive
finally got the Barons dog on a
short leash.
CUT TO:
RYDER
What is it? TV Calling - For educational purposes only
51.
SUNNY
Nothing.
M.K.
RYDER
Looks like its patrolled by a two-
man Clipper team. We take them
out, steal the slaves, then torch
it to the ground.
SUNNY
Were here to scout.
RYDER
Heel, boy, Im calling the shots
tonight.
CUT TO:
A MACHETE.
RIVER CLIPPER #2
SUNNY
THE WIDOW,
THE WIDOW
Sometimes they move in faster than
you think.
WHAAAM!
RYDER
You bitch! Im going to gut you--
TV Calling - For educational purposes only
53.
THE WIDOW
I had two sons once. The first
died slowly. The second violently.
THE WIDOW
(to Sunny, whispered)
Try as I may, the other Barons
wont take me seriously. Once I
seize the Fort, they wont have a
choice. But I cant do that with
you inside.
She offers him a final sad smirk, then exits. Sunnys face
hardens into a mask of ice-calm rage. He shows no emotion,
no sense of pain as the Clippers pound him with blow after
blow. But then like a toy thats been wound too tightly, he
explodes into action.
TWO BLADES
#6 AND #7
A CATWALK.
CLIPPERS #8, #9, #10 and #11, who are waiting, are toppled in
a BLUR OF KICKS as he lands.
rush him. #18 grips two axes while #19 brandishes a sword.
Sunny dodges the dizzying slashes, finally slays #19,
grabbing the Clippers sword just as
charge in behind #18. Sunny kicks the axes from #18s grip,
sending them cartwheeling.
ANGLE ON THE AXES as they fly through the air and slice the
support ropes securing the far end of the catwalk.
TIME SLOWS
SKEWERING
#25
backs away, then turns and runs. Sunny calmly yanks the
sword from a dead Clipper and hurls it at the support ropes
securing the left side of the damaged catwalk. The catwalk
drops, PULVERIZING #25 as he runs under it.
SUNNY
#16!
RYDER,
A MACHETE
M.K.
SUNNY
SUNNY
CUT TO:
SUNNY
Thank you.
SUNNY
Who let you out of that cage?
M.K.
The Barons wife. I dont know
why.
SUNNY
Youre free. Go find your home.
M.K.
I cant go home until I can control
my darkness. Thats why I need you
to train me.
SUNNY
Why would I do that?
M.K.
Because youd have a loyal Colt.
(re: warehouse)
After tonight, I think you could
use one.
SUNNY
The Forts a dangerous place.
M.K.
Not as dangerous as staying out
here alone. You were right.
SUNNY
I thought you didnt want to be
like me. Im a killer, remember?
TV Calling - For educational purposes only
M.K. holds up his hands which are marbled with blood.
57.
M.K.
So am I now.
CUT TO:
BALE.
The teens lock eyes, each grappling with the unexpected hand
fate has dealt them. OFF this poignant encounter...
CUT TO:
M.K. holds the reins while Sunny lifts Ryder off his horse.
Dahlia, Wren and a CLUTCH OF HOUSE SLAVES watch anxiously.
Suddenly, the front door flies open and Lydia and Quinn burst
out in robes. Lydia stifles a SCREAM of panic.
LYDIA
Ryder!
SUNNY
Hes alive.
LYDIA
Get him in the house! Fetch the
doctor!
QUINN
What happened?
SUNNY
An ambush. The Widow plans on
taking the Fort.
QUINN
And so it begins...
(re: M.K.)
I remember you? M.K., right?
SUNNY
Hes my new Colt. Killed his first
man last night... saved us both.
QUINN
Looks like your luck hasnt run out
yet. Sunnys never chosen a Colt
before. Ill have my eye on you.
(to Sunny)
Get him inked. It will inspire the
others.
CUT TO:
RINGO
Whats that for?
SUNNY
Your protection.
EVEN TIGHTER as M.K.s eyes snap open, REVEALING they are now
angry moon-white spheres...
FADE OUT.
