Mathematics in today’s world is changing
very fast.
It is increasingly blending with, contributing to &
is enriched by
Engineering
Medical Science
Computer Science
etc.
The old ways of doing and thinking
mathematics are changing rapidly in the USA
and in Europe.
The line between the so called Pure and Applied
Mathematics – or between Mathematics and
disciplines like Physics, Computer Science, and
Medicine – is no longer distinct.

One of the pioneering universities that advocate

this new approach and encourage students to
think on their own is the University of Houston
(at Houston in Texas, USA).

Research Areas of Present Students

Aanchal Aggarwal is doing research in Large Deviation Theory.

Aarti Jajoo is working on Adaptive finite element methods, her task

at the moment is to develop algorithms to solve some optimal
control systems.

Ajit Kumar’s research is linked to Mathematical Biology group.

The interaction of proteins and enzymes in a cell can be
modelled by a set of differential equations. Currently he is
trying to simplify this system.

Amrita Haldar is working on Solar Cells.

Anando Sen’s research is based on localizing the Radon

transform. In practical terms it amounts to carrying out the CT
scan in a particular portion of the organ rather than the whole
organ hence reducing exposure to radiations and the clarity of
the CT scans should be maintained.
Research Areas of Present Students
Charu Hans is working in area of image processing.

Pankaj Kumar Singh is about to finish a project related to missing

data and then will start working in the area of signal
processing or related area.

Joseph Mathew is working in area of image processing.

Meghna Mittal’s research area is function theory and operator

theory.
Natasha Sharma’s research area is to understand the behavior of
the solutions of Partial Differential Equations using Finite
Element Methods .
Pallavi Arora’s research area is Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Sneh Lata is working in operator theory which involves function

theory as well.
Feedback from former students
My thesis advisor at the University of Houston
was very surprised to know that I did not
receive my undergraduate training in
mathematics. Having learnt that I received
almost all my training in mathematics in one
year at the MSF, his words were, ‚that year did
a miracle”

-Saurabh Jain
(Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Houston)
Research in developing image processing
algorithms for seismic and medical
imaging applications.
Feedback from former students
I am working in the finance department of the search giant
Google and I owe my success to MSF in ways more than one.
Some of my seniors have got a chance to work at big oil
companies like Shell, Halliburton and Schlumberger and MSF
efforts have played an important role in all these placements.
It was a great learning experience at MSF for one year. In fact,
the amount I learned in just one year was, worth 2 years of hard
work and dedication.
-Aditya Aggarwal
(Senior Financial Analyst, Google)
Delhi University Topper of B.Sc.(H) Physics
Feedback from former students
I enjoyed each and every activity at MSF and found it the best
place in my academic life so far. The environment is very
conducive; teachers and staff are very supportive.
The assignments and questions in class were really challenging
and interesting as most of them were unseen to us and were not
from books. So there was no point in looking for solutions in
books, rather we had to think and get the solutions.

-Pankaj Kumar Singh

(MSM, 2006-07 ; PhD student at Houston)
Research in Signals Processing
Feedback from former students
I had a life time experience at MSF. I developed
real interest in Mathematics at MSF. I think it
provides a very good platform for students in
India to pursue higher studies in Mathematics,
which is unique in its own. I was there just for
a year and I have learned so much in that time. I
think it's a great institute doing great job and
I would really like to do something for this
institute.

- Upasana Kashyap
(MSM, 2003-04 ; PhD completed at Houston)
Publications in:
•Journal of Functional Analysis
•Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra
Feedback from former students
For the first time studying became enjoyable.
For three years I’d been taught the ‘Delhi
University way’. Despite having some very good
teachers the course structure and the classroom
environment prevented any mathematical thinking
from the students. That was not the case at
MSF.

- Anando Sen
(MSM, 2006-07 ; PhD student at Houston)
Working on localizing the Radon Transform,
with applications to CT scans with
reduced exposure to radiation.
Feedback from former students

I realize now, as a research student,

that we did mathematics in MSF the way one does
research.
-Mrinal Raghupathi
