1.1 INTRODUCTION

This paper will be explored on the role of blog in influencing the teenagers.
Blog is one of the latest technological achievements in communication that is very
effective because the method of using blog is simple, fast and accessible in anywhere.
Actually, the function of blog is to share background about the self, various activities,
information and all that can be shared with others without the chargeable by someone.
In other word, the function of blog is a place where you keep the public informed
about whatever you do, what you like, what you think about and anything you think
suitable to specify in blog (Martins 2004). In addition, person can relate and share
personal thing, their thoughts about an issue and also to expand their influence and
networks to everyone in wider place.
Focusing on the activities of blogging among teenagers, when teenagers use
the blog in daily life, they become highly activated because, which blog can give the
many advantage for them and improved their performance life, they get the satisfied
in shared activities in blog. Once you have the blog set up, you can post whatever
information you like. It's really a fast way to get your articles and information up on
the web and the templates look good (Steven Veleudo, 2002) In addition, activity in
the blog can determine a person is more likely to own activities such as marketing,
health, entertainment, etc.
Although the use of blog can be applied on various fields such as in business,
educational areas, corporate and many more but the use of blog as the personal tool
seems to be in the highest rate amongst all. Obviously the people who use the blog as
personal tool mostly are teenagers. In order to know deeply why the blogs are very
popular among teenagers, the role of blogs in influencing them must be deeply being
understood.
1.2 THE OBJECTIVES:

1. The purpose of this study is to identify the role of blogs in influencing

the students of Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University.
2. To know whether the bloggers influence social behavior among the
students of Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University.
3. To investigate whether the students of Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan
University can evaluate the information that is spread in the blogs is good or
bad.

1.3 PROBLEM STATEMENT

We conducted this research on this topic because of several issues. First, the
activities of blogging among teenagers seem to be in the highest rate. Although the
use of blogs can be implemented in various sectors and aspects such as in corporate
and organization, educational field, business and many others but the use of blogs as
the personal tools among teenagers is the highest.
Then, the activities of blogging, focusing on teenagers could bring some
effects either it is positive or negative. Although there are many benefits from this
evolving technology, blogs also could give negative impacts.
In order to understand why the teenagers love the activities of blogging, we
first must know the roles of blog in influencing the teenagers so that they are very
interested in this activity. For further understanding on this issue, we also need to
know the effects of this activity on them whether it is positive or negative impacts.

2.1 LITERATURE REVIEW

Title: Teen Blogs Exposed: The private Lives of Teens Made Public

First, a study about Teen Blogs Exposed: The Private Lives of Teens Made Public
by Huffaker, D. (2006). Referring to the journal, blogs represent popular online
diaries for teenagers to expose their daily life, thought and feeling to public. By
blogging, teenagers are tends to disclosure of their personal information which are
very important. The command blog themes among adolescence are covering on the
topics that affect their everyday life such as school- related topics, music, and also the
discussion on the topic of relationships in various forms which is almost half of them.
The activities of blogging have several benefits that can be seen though development
perspective which teenagers can explore and present their identity online and also
through social perspective where blogs can help create or maintain social ties.
However, blogging also provide some negative impacts on bloggers. The revelation of
personal important information to pubic will expose ten bloggers to two kinds of
dangers that are cyber talking or sexual predation by adult strangers and cyber
bullying by peers.

Title: Roles of Blogs in studying The Discourse and Social Practices of

Mathematics Teachers.

Second, a study about The Role of Blogs In studying The Discourse and Social
Practices of Mathematics Teachers by Makri, K, and Kynigos, C. (2007) According to
the writers, there are three elements in determining the successful of online education
that are social presence, cognitive presence and teaching presence. Social presence
focuses on learners' personal shared world, while teaching presence insures a
structured, coexist with other two elements. Authors also said that blog have potential
for teachers reflection. The use of blog by teachers will make them become more
effective in improving their skills of teaching. By using the educational software's that
have been developed on the internet, their teaching method will be more effective and
easier. By using blogs in teaching, students or participants can give their comments
and ask the authors of the blogs (teachers) openly without need to past through formal
ways. The most significant things appeared from online mathematical education is
that the informal discursive style, and the effort of participants to engage in
communicatively demanding situations, they try to avoid the custom, daily or usual
mathematical writing styles. Some specific profiles with certain behavior also
appeared in online education that are, blog enthusiast, blog frequent visitors and blog
specific.

Title: Are blogs putting youth at risk for online sexual solicitation or
harassment?

Third, a study about the risk of online sexual solicitation or harassment on teen
bloggers by Kimberly J.Mitchal, Janis wolak, and David Finkelhor (2008). According
to the writers, the tendency of the youth blogger to put their personal information in
their blogs will keep them in danger. Blogs may be assessed by sex offenders who
will use that information to find their target victims. Besides, blogs also may be a
platform for other crime like the exposure to inappropriate material and identity theft.
Most of the bloggers are founded to be teenage girls who are in high risk of sexual
solicitation and harassment. However, the sexual solicitation and harassment did not
occurred purely because of the activities of blogging, there is no root reason that is
youth are attempt to make interaction with online contact and that interaction can
begin via various ways not only because of blogging. Researchers found that the non-
bloggers are attempted to interact with people what they meet online more than
bloggers. The only main reason why blog putting youth at risk of sexual harassment is
because of the exposure of personal information. Although some rules or guidelines
on the activities of blogging have been given, teenagers in particular, are likely to
ignore restriction against blogging.
Title: Exploring the Role of the Reader in the Activity of Blogging
Fourth a study about The Role of The Reader in The Activity of Blogging by
Baumer, Mark Sueyoshi and Bill Tomlinson (2008). According to the article by Eric
Baumer, Mark Sueyoshi and Bill Tomlinson, blogs are developing at an increasing
rate. There is consensus that blogs has become an important and influential from
media. They also believe the study of blogging is similar with literary criticism by
some reader use the own theory. Besides, this article also believes that to fully
understand the activity of blogging, we must study overall, not only bloggers and the
blogs but also the readers of those blogs and their interaction and relation with the
blog and the blogger. Blogs can show their habitual nature as a self-prescribed system
to the readers. From some reader, checking and reading blog are using much time to
know fully of about the message from the blogs. Bloggers are believed to express
their feeling overwhelmed and released them through blogs. Blogs’ readers do not
read blogs in a temporally situated manner. There are differences in how reader
understands about the blogs and objectives of their activities. The manner and main of
reading and understanding blogs depends on many factors such as the content of the
blogger and the relationship with the reader to the blogger. The characteristics of an
interesting blogs are based from the concept of the blog, perception and presentation
of the blogs, also the consistent definition of the blog. Authors also said that the
format and content of a blog is based on the general understanding of a blog.

Chapter 5
5.0 DISCUSSION

This chapter discussed about the finding of this research. We have taken a few
parts of the question obtained into consideration to be discussed.

5.1 Background of the respondents

As for our respondents, we have chosen 30 students who are taking the course
of Course of Certified Computer network Specialist in Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan
University College (KLMU) which is located at Jalan Raja Laut, Kuala Lumpur. We
chose these students because they are taking the course that is related to computers
and networks which means they are the computer’s enthusiast. So, it is parallel with
the topic of this research that is about the role blog on teenagers where the percentage
of these students for having the activities of blogging is higher.
Based on the finding of data analysis on the background of the respondents,
most of the respondents are male because the course that they are taking is quite
unsuitable for female. The course needs them to travel often and working with
hardware, so that it is not too suitable for females.
As the race of respondents, our respondents come from only two kinds of
races that are Malay and Indian. This is because the other races like Chinese usually
do not interested in taking this field and also because of the location of this study
place which is located at Peninsular Malaysia. Where there are only three kinds of the
races that are majority Malay, Indian and Chinese while others races only in a small
amount.
Almost all of our respondents are singles because many of them are males and
males normally do not interested in marrying while they are still studying. While for
the educational levels, all of them are from Diploma level because it is the condition
to enter this KLMU. Basically, all of the students gave co-operation in answering this
questionnaire.

5.2 Result of the Questionnaire

For this part, we have separated the questionnaires into three section that is
section A, B, and C according to our hypothesis of this research.

SECTION A: The exposure of personal information in the blogs website and the
effects.

Our first hypothesis for this research is about the attempt of teen bloggers to
expose their detail information in their blogs website openly without considering the
effects. We believed that the exposure of personal information will make the person
be in risk of criminal activities such as sexual harassment and identity stealing.
Teenagers also believed to view the blogs that have improper contents like
pornography.
By analyzing the questionnaires answered by respondents, it is true that the
teenagers put on their personal information in the blogs website openly. Although,
some of them have been the victim of identify stealing and feel that they are in risk of
sexual harassment and other crimes but they still attempt to put on their personal
information in the blogs. According to the answers of the respondents, this attempt to
put on their personal information happened because they do not interested in reading
or joint the discussion on the blog that have no information about the author. That
means, the evaluation of the popularity of a blog also refers to the background of the
author itself. In addition, many blog’s providers set up the condition for the people
who want to use their services to fill online forms telling about the person’s identity
and background. However, according to the respondents, that is not the reason why
they put on their personal information in the blogs. This is might be because they can
fill the forms with fake identities.
By referring to the respondent’s answers, we also found that teenagers are
attempt to view the improper contents of a blog especially something that related to
pornography such as video, pictures and erotic stories which is could be the cause of
sexual harassment. The spreading of these disgusting tools will make these bloggers
being in risk because they are open to anyone.
SECTION B: Topics that always being discussed in blogs.

The second hypothesis of this research is teen’s blogs prefer to discussed more
on the topic that have been surrounding their daily life especially about their
relationship with others rather that other topics such as knowledge and entertainment.
Based on the respond from the respondents, the result obviously supports our
hypothesis.
According to the respondent, blog that discuss on the topic of sexual
relationship will easily have their attention. This is because teenagers are in growing
up process and at this stage, the sexual wills of these teenagers are high. Other than
sexual relationship, the results from the questionnaires also show that teen bloggers
are interested in writing down their personal problems happened in their daily life in
their blogs. They prefer to use blogs as their diaries rather than books. This shows that
teen bloggers want to share their personal problems with others and they want others
to know what is happening in their daily life.
One more topic that is having the teenager’s attention towards a blog is about
the topic related to entertainment. However, their attraction on this topic is not as
much as sexual relationship topic. The entertainment topic contains the topic about
the music, artist, movies, games and many others.
However, according to the respondents, some of them still use their blogs only
to discuss an educational topic. The habit of the teenagers for having more than one
blog makes these statements acceptable. They might be having a blog that focuses on
educational topic only but they still more interested in other blogs especially the blogs
that discuss on the topic of sexual relationship.

SECTION C: Role of Blogs in Helping Teenagers’ Social ties.

Our last hypothesis for this research is we believed that the activities of
blogging among teenagers will help their social ties. We have predicted that teens will
become friendlier and more sociable while blogging. We also expected that blogs will
help them in improving their self-confidence.
By referring to the respondents’ answers, it is clearly and purely parallel with
our hypothesis. The respondents agree that they have become friendlier in online
activities especially in blogging. The boosts of friendly manner in these teenagers are
proved when they have made a lot of friends via blogs. Having many friends meaning
that they have become more social able and having their self-confidence. They have
no doubt in joint any discussions, telling their personal problems and their daily life to
others. However in our opinions, based on our observation, this good manner that is
occurred and showed by the teenagers is just sticking in the online activities only.
They could not implement it in real life or daily life.

Based on the answers of the respondents, we also found that teenagers prefer
to use blogs to communicate with their friends. This might be because of two causes.
First, communication via online do not cause any cents and free of charge except for
certain services. Second, online communication allows persons to make friends
without knowing each other. This is also one of the reasons why teens become
friendlier in online activities. In addition, according to the respondents they trusted
their online friends more than their daily friends. This attitude will cause some of bad
effects such as being in risk of deception and other crimes.

6.0 RECOMMENDATION
Based on the finding of this research, we would like to give a few suggestions
for the next researches who will conduct the research on this field of study.
First of all, we suggest that the next researchers should focus on finding the
solutions to avoid bloggers from putting their personal information in the blogs. This
is because, the finding of current research show that the exposure of detail
information will bring negative impacts. The solutions must be effective and could
afford the popularity of the blog.
` We also hope that the next researchers could make the research on this topic
by focusing on the effects of blogging among teenagers in wider aspects. This current
study only focused on a few bad and good effects such as being in risk into crimes
(negative) and improving teenagers’ social ties (positive).
Then, we propose that the next researchers should find more respondents on
their research where the respondents should consists the respondents from various
races, religions, ages, educational background and other background information.

7.0 CONCLUSION
As the conclusion, we assumed that the activities of blogging play a big role in
influencing the teenagers when we looked into a few aspects.
The activities of blogging, focusing on teenagers could bring many benefits
for them. Through blogging, they are having their self- confidence and become
more social able in the society and community. However, this attitude should not
being limited in online activities only but they must able to implement it in their
real life.
Although there are many benefits that can be gained through this evolving
technology (blog), it also could give some of negative effects. Focusing on crimes
activities, we found that blog also could make the bloggers being opened into a
few crimes like identity stealing and sexual harassment. They easily become the
targets to be the victims due to the exposure of their detail information in the
blogs.
Overall, we feel very glad because this research has found and achieved its
objectives and goals. Thank you.
