WEEK 3

June 26 June 30, 2017

Jerome B. Mansueto

Department of Public Works and Highways

South Cotabato 2nd District Engineering Office

(transferred from MJ Tiongson Construction)

With my third week coming spot on, I started this week, still, at Brgy. West,
General Santos City, observing the progress of the road concreting project handled by
MJ Tiongson Construction. As we observed, we had witnessed the leveling of the base
to be settled for the road concreting through the use of leveling hose, the compaction
of the soil by the roller to ensure plainness of the soil. We also had a little talk with the
project engineer and the foreman about the details and purpose of said activities.
Along the course of our stay, we realized that were getting a little stagnant on
our acquired knowledge regarding civil engineering concepts because were focused
on the road concreting project which implies the indiverse knowledge that we could get.
And as an intern, Im looking for experience, diverse experience around the different
corners of civil engineering concepts that I could learn so that I may use it in the future.
Thats why we decided to transfer at Department of Public Works and Highways South
Cotabato 2nd District Engineering Office.
We had an interview at first with the District Engineer, Engr. Rey Francisco and
Assistant District Engineer, Engr. Elsa Urmenita. They asked us regarding our purpose
and what should they expect from us during the flow of out internship training. With a
little communication skills and pure intentions, we acquired the slots.
My first day at DPWH was a blast. I had a chance to be assigned at their
Maintenance Section. I had an welcoming and orientation with Mr. Saidale Mitmug,
Chief of Maintenance Section. He discussed about their section, the purpose and their
functions, visions, missions, and ethics. He assigned me to Engr. Rex Novicio, one of
his subordinates to guide me throughout my stay in their section.
He had given me some insights and assignments to ponder. Because their
section is seldom on field, Im expected to do some office works but he insisted that I
should study their job. He gave me handouts and books to study, to wit:
Highway Safety Design Standard Part II: Road Signs and Pavement Markings
Manual
Visual Road Condition Assessment Manual: Philippine 2014 Version No. 1
Department Order No. 41 (Amended Policy Guidelines on the Maintenance of
National Roads and Bridges)

Also, he gave me some plans of road concreting, road renovations, and buildings
and assigned me to study it, including its Program of Works, Detailed Unit Price
Analysis, and also its estimates.

In the third week, Ive learned about specifications and descriptions about road
signages, road condition assessment, planning, designing, and estimating concepts.
Material Procurement.
Gathering of samples to be
used for conducting Soil
Density and Moisture
Content Test.

Bookworm Spirit. Getting

the time to read and study
