Acid feed tank

Taking a basis of one hour
Density of sulphuric acid 1840kg/m3 at 250c
Mass of sulphuric acid 138.4kg
But, density = mass
Volume
Volume of the sulphuric acid = mass = 138.4 = 0.0752m3
Volume 1840
Therefore, the volume of the sulphuric acid = 0.0752m3
Assuming 30% allowance, the volume of the tank will then be;
V = 1.3 0.0752 = 0.09776m3
Scaling up to 24 hours = 240.09776 = 2.35m3
Assuming the tank to be cylindrical, V = r2h
Let the surface area, A of a closed cylinder be; A = DL + 2 D2 (sinnot, 2004)
4
Where D = diameter of the cylinder
L = length of the cylinder
This will be the objective function which is to be simplified
f(DL) = (DL) + D2
2
For a given volume V, the diameter and length are related by:
V = r2L
Therefore, L = 4V D2 (sinnot 2004)

and the objective function becomes;
f(D) = 4V D2 + D2
2
Differentiating the equation and setting it to zero;
D3 = 4V

D =34V = 342.35 = 1.441 m

D = 1.441m
To find the height of acid tank, use = 2
= 0.72052h
Therefore, the height of the acid tank is 1.441m
The material of construction is carbon steel

Assumption made:
For storage material type of carbon steel, the recommended stress is;
S = 1200psi
Internal pressure in psig; P = 14.7psi
E = 0.85
Calculation of the thickness :
The volume of the acid feed tank = 2.35m3
The diameter of the acid feed tank = 1.441m = 56.733inch
The height of the acid feed tank = 1.441m = 56.733 inch
Assuming corrosion allowance = 0.125 inch
t= PD + Cc
2(SE 0.6P)
t= 14.7 56.733 + 0.125 = 0.54 inch
2{(1200 0.85) (14.7 0.6)}
The thickness = 0.54 inch
Outer diameter = D0 = D + 2t
= 56.733 + 2(0.54) = 57.8 inch
5.2. Alum storage tank
Taking basis of one hour
Density of alum 2640kg/m3 at 250c
Mass of alum 186.093kg
But, density = mass
Volume
Volume of the sulphuric acid = mass = 186.093 = 0.070m3
Volume 2640
Therefore, the volume of the sulphuric acid = 0.070m3
Assuming 30% allowance, the volume of the tank will then be;
V = 1.3 0.07
V = 0.091m3
To scale up to 24 hours
24 0.091 = 2.184m3
Assuming the tank to be cylindrical, V = r2h
Let the surface area, A of a closed cylinder be; A = DL + 2 D2 (sinnot, 2004)
4
Where D = diameter of the cylinder
L = length of the cylinder
This will be the objective function which is to be simplified
f(DL) = (DL) + D2

For a given volume V, the diameter and length are related by:
V = r2L
Therefore, L = 4V D2 (sinnot 2004)

and the objective function becomes;
f(D) = 4V D2 + D2
2
Differentiating the equation and setting it to zero;
D3 = 4V

D =34V = 342.184 = 1.41m

D = 1.41m
To find the height of the tank, use = 2
= 0.7052h
H = 1.4m
The material of construction is carbon steel
Assumption made:
For storage material type of carbon steel, the recommended stress is; 1200psi
Internal pressure in psig; P = 14.7psi
E = 0.85
Calculation of the thickness :
The volume of the acid feed tank = 2.184m3
The diameter of the acid feed tank = 1.41m = 55.5inch
The height of the acid feed tank = 1.4m = 55 inch
Assuming corrosion allowance = 0.125 inch

t= PD + Cc
2(SE 0.6P)
t= 14.7 55.5 + 0.125 = 0.53 inch
2{(1200 0.85) (14.7 0.6)}
The thickness = 0.53 inch
Outer diameter = D0 = D + 2t
= 55.5+ 2(0.53) = 56.56 inch
