17. pavattite ca pana bhagavat dhammacakke, bhumm dev saddam anussvesu


17. And when the Lord set in motion the Wheel of Dhamma, the earthly devas proclaimed these
words,
eta bhagavat brasiya isipatane migadye anuttara dhammacakka pavattita,
appaivattiya samaena v brhmaena v devena v mrena v brahmun v kenaci v
lokasminti.
This unexcelled Wheel of Dhamma was set in motion by the Lord in Bras, at the deer park
in Isipatana, which is not to be stopped by any recluse, brahmin, deva, Mra, or Brahma, in the
world.
bhummna devna sadda sutv ctumahrjik dev saddamanussvesu ... pe ...
ctumahrjikna devna sadda sutv tvatis dev ... pe ... ym dev ... pe ... tusit dev ...
pe ... nimmnarat dev ... pe ... paranimmitavasavatt dev ... pe ... brahmakyik dev
saddamanussvesu
Having heard the words of the earthly devas, the Four Great Deva Kings proclaimed these words,
etc., and having heard the words of the Four Great Deva Kings, the devas of Tvatisa, etc., the
Yma devas, etc., the Tusita devas, etc., the devas who delight in their own creations, etc., the
devas who delight in the creations of others, etc., and the devas of the company of Brahma
proclaimed these words,
eta bhagavat brasiya isipatane migadye anuttara dhammacakka pavattita
appaivattiya samaena v brhmaena v devena v mrena v brahmun v kenaci v
lokasminti.
This unexcelled Wheel of Dhamma was set in motion by the Lord in Bras, at the deer park
in Isipatana, which is not to be stopped by any recluse, brahmin, deva, Mra, or Brahma, in the
world.
itiha, tena khaena, tena layena tena muhuttena yva brahmalok saddo abbhuggacchi.
Thereupon, at that instant, at that moment, at that second, the sound went forth from the Brahma
World.
ayaca dasasahassilokadhtu sakampi sampakampi sampavedhi; appamo ca uro obhso loke
pturahosi, atikkamma devna devnubhva.
And this ten thousand-fold world system trembled, shook, and quaked; and boundless lofty light
appeared in the world, surpassing the heavenly splendour of the devas.
atha kho bhagav ima udna udnesi
Thereupon, the Lord uttered this utterance,
asi vata, bho koao, asi vata bho koaoti.
You verily know, O Koaa, you verily know, O Koaa.
iti hida yasmato koaassa asikoao tveva nma ahosi.
Therefore, the Venerable Koaa is known as Koaa the Knowing, Asikoaa.

18. atha kho yasm asikoao dihadhammo pattadhammo viditadhammo


pariyoghadhammo tiavicikiccho vigatakathakatho vesrajjappatto aparappaccayo
satthussane bhagavanta etadavoca
18. Thereupon, Asikoaa, who had seen the Dhamma, reached the Dhamma, known the
Dhamma, penetrated into the Dhamma, surpassed doubt, departed from uncertainty, reached
confidence, not dependent upon others in regards to the doctrine of the teacher, said this to the
Lord,

labheyyha, bhante, bhagavato santike pabbajja, labheyya upasampadanti.


I would obtain, sir, the going forth in the presence of the Lord, I would obtain the higher
ordination.
ehi bhikkhti bhagav avoca svkkhto dhammo, cara brahmacariya samm dukkhassa
antakiriyyti. sva tassa yasmato upasampad ahosi.
Come, monk, said the Lord, The Dhamma is well preached, practicing noble conduct, suffering
is rightly ended. The higher ordination of the venerable one was declared.

19. atha kho bhagav tadavasese bhikkh dhammiy kathya ovadi anussi. atha kho yasmato
ca vappassa yasmato ca bhaddiyassa bhagavat dhammiy kathya ovadiyamnna
anussiyamnna viraja vtamala dhammacakkhu udapdi ya kici
samudayadhamma, sabba ta nirodhadhammanti.
19. Thereupon, the Lord admonished the remaining monks, teaching with a discourse on the
Dhamma. And thereon, the Venerables Vappa and Bhaddiya, being admonished and taught with
a discourse on the Dhamma by the Lord, gave rise to the stainless and spotless eye of the Dhamma:
that whatever phenomena arise, all those phenomena are subject to cessation.

te dihadhamm pattadhamm viditadhamm pariyoghadhamm tiavicikicch


vigatakathakath vesrajjappatt aparappaccay satthussane bhagavanta etadavocu
They, who had seen the Dhamma, reached the Dhamma, known the Dhamma, penetrated into the
Dhamma, surpassed doubt, departed from uncertainty, reached confidence, not dependent upon
others in regards to the doctrine of the teacher, said this to the Lord,
labheyyma maya, bhante, bhagavato santike pabbajja, labheyyma upasampadanti.
We would obtain, sir, the going forth in the presence of the Lord, we would obtain the higher
ordination.
etha bhikkhavoti bhagav avoca svkkhto dhammo, caratha brahmacariya samm
dukkhassa antakiriyyti. sva tesa yasmantna upasampad ahosi.
Come, monks, said the Lord, The Dhamma is well preached, practicing noble conduct,
suffering is rightly ended. The higher ordination of the venerable ones was declared.

atha kho bhagav tadavasese bhikkh nhrabhatto dhammiy kathya ovadi anussi.
Thereupon, the remaining monks, who carried alms, were admonished and instructed with a
discourse on the Dhamma.
ya tayo bhikkh piya caritv haranti, tena chabbaggo ypeti.
Those three monks, having wandered for and collecting alms, nourished the six.
atha kho yasmato ca mahnmassa yasmato ca assajissa bhagavat dhammiy kathya
ovadiyamnna anussiyamnna viraja vtamala dhammacakkhu udapdi ya kici
samudayadhamma, sabba ta nirodhadhammanti.
Thereupon, the Venerable Mahnma and the Venerable Assaji, being admonished and taught
with a discourse on the Dhamma by the Lord, gave rise to the stainless and spotless eye of the
Dhamma: that whatever phenomena arise, all those phenomena are subject to cessation.

20. atha kho bhagav pacavaggiye bhikkh mantesi


20. Thereupon, the Lord addressed the group of five monks,

rpa, bhikkhave, anatt.


Form, monks, is not self.
rpaca hida, bhikkhave, att abhavissa, nayida rpa bdhya savatteyya, labbhetha ca
rpe
And that form, monks, would it have been the self,
eva me rpa hotu, eva me rpa m ahosti. yasm ca kho, bhikkhave, rpa anatt,
tasm rpa bdhya savattati, na ca labbhati rpe eva me rpa hotu, eva me rpa
m ahosti. vedan, anatt. vedan ca hida, bhikkhave, att abhavissa, nayida vedan bdhya
savatteyya, labbhetha ca vedanya eva me vedan hotu, eva me vedan m ahosti.
yasm ca kho, bhikkhave, vedan anatt, tasm vedan bdhya savattati, na ca labbhati
vedanya eva me vedan hotu, eva me vedan m ahosti. sa, anatt. sa ca hida,
bhikkhave, att abhavissa, nayida sa bdhya savatteyya, labbhetha ca saya eva
me sa hotu, eva me sa m ahosti. yasm ca kho, bhikkhave, sa anatt, tasm sa
bdhya savattati, na ca labbhati saya eva me sa hotu, eva me sa m ahosti.
sakhr, anatt. sakhr ca hida, bhikkhave, att abhavissasu, nayida VAR sakhr
bdhya savatteyyu, labbhetha ca sakhresu eva me sakhr hontu, eva me
sakhr m ahesunti. yasm ca kho, bhikkhave, sakhr anatt, tasm sakhr bdhya
savattanti, na ca labbhati sakhresu eva me sakhr hontu, eva me sakhr m
ahesunti. via, anatt. viaca hida, bhikkhave, att abhavissa, nayida via
bdhya savatteyya, labbhetha ca vie eva me via hotu, eva me via m
ahosti. yasm ca kho, bhikkhave, via anatt, tasm via bdhya savattati, na ca
labbhati vie eva me via hotu, eva me via m ahosti.

21. ta ki maatha, bhikkhave, rpa nicca v anicca vti? anicca, bhante. ya


pannicca dukkha v ta sukha vti? dukkha, bhante. ya pannicca dukkha
viparimadhamma, kalla nu ta samanupassitu eta mama, esohamasmi, eso me attti?
no heta, bhante. vedan nicc v anicc vti? anicc, bhante. ya pannicca dukkha v ta
sukha vti? dukkha, bhante. ya pannicca dukkha viparimadhamma, kalla nu ta
samanupassitu eta mama, esohamasmi, eso me attti? no heta, bhante. sa nicc v
anicc vti? anicc, bhante. ya pannicca dukkha v ta sukha vti? dukkha, bhante.
ya pannicca dukkha viparimadhamma, kalla nu ta samanupassitu eta mama,
esohamasmi, eso me attti? no heta, bhante. sakhr nicc v anicc vti? anicc, bhante. ya
pannicca, dukkha v ta sukha vti? dukkha, bhante. ya pannicca dukkha
viparimadhamma, kalla nu ta samanupassitu eta mama, esohamasmi, eso me attti?
no heta, bhante. via nicca v anicca vti? anicca, bhante. ya pannicca, dukkha
v ta sukha vti? dukkha, bhante. ya pannicca dukkha viparimadhamma, kalla
nu ta samanupassitu eta mama, esohamasmi, eso me attti? no heta, bhante.

22. tasmtiha, bhikkhave, ya kici rpa attngatapaccuppanna ajjhatta v bahiddh


v orika v sukhuma v hna v pata v ya dre VAR santike v, sabba rpa
neta mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attti evameta yathbhta sammappaya
dahabba. y kci vedan attngatapaccuppann ajjhatta v bahiddh v orik v sukhum
v hn v pat v y dre santike v, sabb vedan neta mama, nesohamasmi, na meso
attti evameta yathbhta sammappaya dahabba. y kci sa
attngatapaccuppann ajjhatta v bahiddh v orik v sukhum v hn v pat v y dre
santike v, sabb sa neta mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attti evameta yathbhta
sammappaya dahabba. ye keci sakhr attngatapaccuppann ajjhatta v bahiddh v
orik v sukhum v hn v pat v ye dre santike v, sabbe sakhr neta mama,
nesohamasmi, na meso attti evameta yathbhta sammappaya dahabba. ya kici
via attngatapaccuppanna ajjhatta v bahiddh v orika v sukhuma v hna
v pata v ya dre santike v, sabba via neta mama, nesohamasmi, na meso
attti evameta yathbhta sammappaya dahabba.

23. eva passa, bhikkhave, sutav ariyasvako rpasmimpi nibbindati, vedanyapi


nibbindati, sayapi nibbindati, sakhresupi nibbindati, viasmimpi nibbindati; nibbinda
virajjati; virg vimuccati; vimuttasmi vimuttamiti a hoti, kh jti, vusita
brahmacariya, kata karaya, npara itthattyti pajntti.

24. idamavoca bhagav. attaman pacavaggiy bhikkh bhagavato bhsita abhinandunti


VAR. imasmica pana veyykaraasmi bhaamne pacavaggiyna bhikkhna anupdya
savehi cittni vimuccisu. tena kho pana samayena cha loke arahanto honti.

7. Pabbajjkath
25. tena kho pana samayena brasiya yaso nma kulaputto sehiputto sukhumlo hoti. tassa
tayo psd honti eko hemantiko, eko gimhiko, eko vassiko. so vassike psde cattro mse
VAR nippurisehi triyehi paricrayamno na hehpsda orohati. atha kho yasassa
kulaputtassa pacahi kmaguehi samappitassa samagbhtassa paricrayamnassa paikacceva
VAR nidd okkami, parijanassapi nidd okkami, sabbarattiyo ca telapadpo jhyati. atha kho yaso
kulaputto paikacceva pabujjhitv addasa saka parijana supanta aiss kacche va,
aiss kahe mudiga, aiss kacche ambara, aa vikesika, aa vikkheika,
a vippalapantiyo, hatthappatta susna mae. disvnassa dnavo pturahosi, nibbidya
citta sahsi. atha kho yaso kulaputto udna udnesi upadduta vata bho, upassaha
vata bhoti.

atha kho yaso kulaputto suvaapdukyo rohitv yena nivesanadvra tenupasakami.


amanuss dvra vivarisu m yasassa kulaputtassa koci antaryamaksi agrasm
anagriya pabbajjyti. atha kho yaso kulaputto yena nagaradvra tenupasakami. amanuss
dvra vivarisu m yasassa kulaputtassa koci antaryamaksi agrasm anagriya
pabbajjyti. atha kho yaso kulaputto yena isipatana migadyo tenupasakami.

26. tena kho pana samayena bhagav rattiy paccsasamaya paccuhya ajjhokse cakamati.
addas kho bhagav yasa kulaputta dratova gacchanta, disvna cakam orohitv paatte
sane nisdi. atha kho yaso kulaputto bhagavato avidre udna udnesi upadduta vata bho,
upassaha vata bhoti. atha kho bhagav yasa kulaputta etadavoca ida kho, yasa,
anupadduta, ida anupassaha. ehi yasa, nisda, dhamma te desessmti. atha kho yaso
kulaputto ida kira anupadduta, ida anupassahanti haho udaggo suvaapdukhi
orohitv yena bhagav tenupasakami, upasakamitv bhagavanta abhivdetv ekamanta
nisdi. ekamanta nisinnassa kho yasassa kulaputtassa bhagav anupubbi katha kathesi,
seyyathida dnakatha slakatha saggakatha, kmna dnava okra sakilesa,
nekkhamme nisasa paksesi. yad bhagav asi yasa kulaputta kallacitta, muducitta,
vinvaraacitta, udaggacitta, pasannacitta, atha y buddhna smukkasik
dhammadesan ta paksesi dukkha, samudaya, nirodha, magga. seyyathpi nma
suddha vattha apagatakaka sammadeva rajana paiggaheyya, evameva yasassa
kulaputtassa tasmiyeva sane viraja vtamala dhammacakkhu udapdi ya kici
samudayadhamma, sabba ta nirodhadhammanti.

27. atha kho yasassa kulaputtassa mt psda abhiruhitv yasa kulaputta apassant yena
sehi gahapati tenupasakami, upasakamitv sehi gahapati etadavoca putto te, gahapati,
yaso na dissatti. atha kho sehi gahapati catuddis assadte uyyojetv smayeva yena
isipatana migadyo tenupasakami. addas kho sehi gahapati suvaapdukna nikkhepa,
disvna tayeva anugamsi VAR. addas kho bhagav sehi gahapati dratova gacchanta,
disvna bhagavato etadahosi yannha tathrpa iddhbhisakhra abhisakhareyya
yath sehi gahapati idha nisinno idha nisinna yasa kulaputta na passeyyti. atha kho
bhagav tathrpa iddhbhisakhra abhisakharesi. atha kho sehi gahapati yena bhagav
tenupasakami, upasakamitv bhagavanta etadavoca api, bhante, bhagav yasa
kulaputta passeyyti? tena hi, gahapati, nisda, appeva nma idha nisinno idha nisinna yasa
kulaputta passeyysti. atha kho sehi gahapati idheva kirha nisinno idha nisinna yasa
kulaputta passissmti haho udaggo bhagavanta abhivdetv ekamanta nisdi. ekamanta
nisinnassa kho sehissa gahapatissa bhagav anupubbi katha kathesi, seyyathida
dnakatha slakatha saggakatha, kmna dnava okra sakilesa, nekkhamme
nisasa paksesi. yad bhagav asi sehi gahapati kallacitta, muducitta,
vinvaraacitta, udaggacitta, pasannacitta, atha y buddhna smukkasik
dhammadesan, ta paksesi dukkha, samudaya, nirodha, magga. seyyathpi nma
suddha vattha apagatakaka sammadeva rajana paiggaheyya evameva sehissa
gahapatissa tasmiyeva sane viraja vtamala dhammacakkhu udapdi ya kici
samudayadhamma, sabba ta nirodhadhammanti. atha kho sehi gahapati dihadhammo
pattadhammo viditadhammo pariyoghadhammo tiavicikiccho vigatakathakatho
vesrajjappatto aparappaccayo satthussane bhagavanta etadavoca abhikkanta, bhante,
abhikkanta, bhante, seyyathpi, bhante, nikkujjita VAR v ukkujjeyya, paicchanna v
vivareyya, mhassa v magga cikkheyya, andhakre v telapajjota dhreyya
cakkhumanto rpni dakkhantti evameva bhagavat anekapariyyena dhammo paksito.
esha, bhante, bhagavanta saraa gacchmi, dhammaca, bhikkhusaghaca. upsaka
ma bhagav dhretu ajjatagge pupeta saraa gatanti. sova loke pahama upsako ahosi
tevciko.

28. atha kho yasassa kulaputtassa pituno dhamme desiyamne yathdiha yathvidita
bhmi paccavekkhantassa anupdya savehi citta vimucci. atha kho bhagavato etadahosi
yasassa kho kulaputtassa pituno dhamme desiyamne yathdiha yathvidita bhmi
paccavekkhantassa anupdya savehi citta vimutta. abhabbo kho yaso kulaputto
hnyvattitv kme paribhujitu, seyyathpi pubbe agrikabhto; yannha ta
iddhbhisakhra paippassambheyyanti. atha kho bhagav ta iddhbhisakhra
paippassambhesi. addas kho sehi gahapati yasa kulaputta nisinna, disvna yasa
kulaputta etadavoca mt te tta, yasa, parideva VAR sokasampann, dehi mtuy jvitanti.
atha kho yaso kulaputto bhagavanta ullokesi. atha kho bhagav sehi gahapati etadavoca
ta ki maasi, gahapati, yassa sekkhena ena sekkhena dassanena dhammo diho vidito
seyyathpi tay? tassa yathdiha yathvidita bhmi paccavekkhantassa anupdya savehi
citta vimutta. bhabbo nu kho so, gahapati, hnyvattitv kme paribhujitu seyyathpi
pubbe agrikabhtoti? no heta, bhante. yasassa kho, gahapati, kulaputtassa sekkhena ena
sekkhena dassanena dhammo diho vidito seyyathpi tay. tassa yathdiha yathvidita
bhmi paccavekkhantassa anupdya savehi citta vimutta. abhabbo kho, gahapati, yaso
kulaputto hnyvattitv kme paribhujitu seyyathpi pubbe agrikabhtoti. lbh, bhante,
yasassa kulaputtassa, suladdha, bhante, yasassa kulaputtassa, yath yasassa kulaputtassa
anupdya savehi citta vimutta. adhivsetu me, bhante, bhagav ajjatanya bhatta yasena
kulaputtena pacchsamaenti. adhivsesi bhagav tuhbhvena. atha kho sehi gahapati
bhagavato adhivsana viditv uhysan bhagavanta abhivdetv padakkhia katv
pakkmi. atha kho yaso kulaputto acirapakkante sehimhi gahapatimhi bhagavanta etadavoca
labheyyha, bhante, bhagavato santike pabbajja, labheyya upasampadanti. ehi
bhikkhti bhagav avoca svkkhto dhammo, cara brahmacariya samm dukkhassa
antakiriyyti. sva tassa yasmato upasampad ahosi. tena kho pana samayena satta loke
arahanto honti.
yasassa pabbajj nihit.

29. atha kho bhagav pubbahasamaya nivsetv pattacvaramdya yasmat yasena


pacchsamaena yena sehissa gahapatissa nivesana tenupasakami, upasakamitv paatte
sane nisdi. atha kho yasmato yasassa mt ca puradutiyik ca yena bhagav
tenupasakamisu, upasakamitv bhagavanta abhivdetv ekamanta nisdisu. tsa
bhagav anupubbi katha kathesi, seyyathida dnakatha slakatha saggakatha,
kmna dnava okra sakilesa, nekkhamme nisasa paksesi. yad t bhagav
asi kallacitt, muducitt, vinvaraacitt, udaggacitt, pasannacitt, atha y buddhna
smukkasik dhammadesan ta paksesi dukkha, samudaya, nirodha, magga.
seyyathpi nma suddha vattha apagatakaka sammadeva rajana paiggaheyya, evameva
tsa tasmiyeva sane viraja vtamala dhammacakkhu udapdi ya kici
samudayadhamma, sabba ta nirodhadhammanti. t dihadhamm pattadhamm
viditadhamm pariyoghadhamm tiavicikicch vigatakathakath vesrajjappatt
aparappaccay satthussane bhagavanta etadavocu abhikkanta, bhante, abhikkanta,
bhante ... pe ... et maya, bhante, bhagavanta saraa gacchma, dhammaca,
bhikkhusaghaca. upsikyo no bhagav dhretu ajjatagge pupet saraa gatti. t ca loke
pahama upsik ahesu tevcik.

atha kho yasmato yasassa mt ca pit ca puradutiyik ca bhagavantaca yasmantaca


yasa patena khdanyena bhojanyena sahatth santappetv sampavretv, bhagavanta
bhuttvi ontapattapi, ekamanta nisdisu. atha kho bhagav yasmato yasassa mtaraca
pitaraca puradutiyikaca dhammiy kathya sandassetv samdapetv samuttejetv
sampahasetv uhysan pakkmi.
