Importance of Shravan month

The month of shravana in Hindu calendar is considered a very auspicious time of the year to
seek the blessing of lord Shiva. Each day of this month is considered the best time to
conduct all important religious ceremonies. In this month, each Monday is celebrated as
Shravan Somwar across all temples with the dharanatra hanging over the Shiva linga,
bathing it with the holy water and milk. Devotees offer Bael leaves, flowers, holy water and
milk, i.e. Falam-Toyam, Pushpam- Patram to Lord Shiva on every Shravana Somwar. Most
devotees even fast on every Monday of that month till the sun go down and the
Nandadeep, the Akhand Diya, burns throughout.

In the month of Shravana devotees usually fast every Monday to please Lord Shiva. It is
considered that all your wishes come true if you praise Lord Shiva in the right manner.
During this fast devotees dont eat anything all day and only after shravan maas puja of Lord
Shiva can one grab a bite. On every Monday devotees pray to goddess Parvati and Lord
Ganesha along with Lord Shiva on shravan month and doing so is said to get all your prayers
answered.

A lot of ingredients are used in the Puja such as milk, honey, water, sugar, Panchamrit,
Kalava, clothes, chandan, rice, flowers, Panchmeva, Dhoop, Aak, Bael Patra, Vijya, Deep,
Kamalgatta, Paan, Supari, Laung, Elaichi, Roli and Dakshina. Aarti along with Bhajan for the
Puja is done using Kapur(Camphor). It is said that after the Puja one should read or listen to
the shrawana maas katha and rudrabhishek should be done with the help of a brahman.
