Call for
Funding of young scientists during the completion and wrap-up
phase of the doctorate

Program purpose Completion and wrap-up grants serve to support doctoral and post-
doctoral candidates for up to four months during the final and/or
wrap-up phase of their doctorate.

Support This program supports


doctoral candidates of TU Dresden that encounter a finan-
cial shortage during their final PhD phase based on the ex-
piration of funding,
prospective postdocs of TU Dresden after having passed
their viva voce/thesis defense in order to e.g. finish their
research project, to publish their results and to prepare
themselves for the next career step - preferably in academ-
ia.

Eligibility Eligible are doctoral candidates and prospective postdocs in the


final and/or wrap-up phase of their PhD, whose current financial
support in form of scholarships, work contracts or third party fund-
ing expired.

Generally, as of the fourth year of a doctorate, PhD. students can


apply for completion and wrap-up grants only. This means that
bridging grants can only be applied for until the fourth year of a doc-
torate (please see call for Bridging Grants).

Membership in the Graduate Academy of the TU Dresden is man-


datory.

Not eligible Not eligible are basically all doctoral students and prospective post-
docs
in current employment during the applied funding period,
research assistants included (WHK-Wissenschaftliche
Hilfskraft), or
who are already supported by further funding institutions
(e.g. private foundations, companies)

Extent of funding Funding can be granted up to four months.

Applicants can apply for grants up to four months before submis-


sion of the thesis and until up to four months after the thesis de-
fense.

Extensions are not possible.


Extent of funding The grant consists of:
a monthly scholarship of 1,365.00 EUR for PhD students
and 1,750.00 EUR for postdocs in accordance with the
funding regulations of the German Research Foundation
(Exception: the rate for doctoral candidates of medi-
cine/dentistry [envisaged degree: Dr. med.] amounts to
670.00 EUR per month)
a monthly subsidy (for material/travel expenses) of
103.00 EUR
if applicable, a monthly family allowance of 400.00 EUR for
the first and 100.00 EUR for each additional child

Application A complete application consists of the following documents:


documents Application form
CV and publication list of the applicant (max. 5 pages)
Copy of the Master Certificate/State Examination Certifi-
cate/ Diploma (or equivalent)
Description of the scientific project including a work and
time schedule (max. 7 pages)
Letters of Recommendation:
To be handed in by the academic supervisor: Confirmation
of financial need in due consideration of the financial situa-
tion of the professorship/the department
Additional letter of recommendation from a further profes-
sor (e.g. second academic supervisor, junior research group
leader)

Additonal document for applications regarding funding during the


wrap-up phase of the doctorate:
Letter of intent and confirmation of financial need of the
host professorship/institution

Application deadline Application deadlines 2016:


30th April
31st October

Start of grant Should your application be successful,

funding during the completion phase will start after termi-


nation of your previous funding, but earliest on August 1st,
2016 (deadline: 30.04.2016) respectively February 1st,
2017 (deadline: 31.10.2016)
funding during the wrap-up phase of the doctorate will start
after the successful passing of the viva voce/thesis de-
fense, but earliest on August 1st, 2016 (deadline:
30.04.2016) respectively February 1st, 2017 (deadline:
31.10.2016)

Submission Please submit the application by e-mail in due time to:
graduiertenakademie@tu-dresden.de. All application documents
should be merged (as far as possible, exception: letters of recom-
mendation) into only one digital PDF file.

The applicant is requested to ensure that the required letters of


recommendation will reach the Graduate Academy in due
time. Letters of recommendation should be sent by the referees
via e-mail to graduiertenakademie@tu-dresden.de or via regular mail
to: Graduate Academy, Funding Programs, Mommsenstrae 7,
01069 Dresden.

Missing, incomplete or incorrect documents cannot be submit-


ted/resubmitted after the application deadline. Incomplete ap-
plications cannot be taken into consideration.
