Proyecto final:

principales consumidores: jvenes y deportistas.

agua, azcar (sacarina, glucosa), glucuronolactona, cafena, as como diferentes
vitaminas (niacina, taurina, cido pantotnico, B6 y B12).
An as,
individuo a otro.

taurine and/or caffeine containing drinks, Amino Acids 20, 1, 63-73 (2001)
4
1. Geiss K.R. et al., The effect of a taurine-containing drink on performance in 10 endurance-athletes,
Amino Acids 7, 1, 45-56 (1994)

parapente, motociclismo, windsurf, snow-board, jumping, trialbiking, frmula 1, etc.
Alemania, Nueva Zelanda y Japn.

Abstract
METHODS: Ten male student athletes (age: 22.4 2.1 years, height: 180.8 7.7
cm, weight: 74.2 8.5 kg) performed three randomized maximal oxygen
consumption tests on a treadmill. Each test was separated by four days and
participants were asked to ingest Red Bull, Hype or placebo drinks 40 minutes
before the exercise bout. The VO2max, time to exhaustion, heart rate and lactate
were measured to determine if the caffeine-based beverages influence
performance.
For blood lactate levels no significant changes were observed before and two
minute after the test (p > 0.05).
JRMS 2010; 15(3): 127-132 or some years the beverages denominating "energy
drinks" have become widespread both in recreational and trained athletes,
because of their proposed ergogenic effects. A variety of energy drinks are
currently available on the market today and are publicized to increase the energy
level of the individuals consuming it. Sport drinks, such as Gatorade and
Powerade, have been designed to refuel athletes during and after their
performance.
Specifically, they are designed to have optimal levels of carbohydrate for glycogen
replenishment, electrolytes for ion maintenance, and prevent dehydration.
Contrary, energy drinks are reported to increase mental alertness and physical
performance during exercise.
These ingredients have been proposed to interact with each other to provide a
stimulant effect.1 Furthermore, the manufacturers of these drinks claim a variety of
benefits in their advertisements and although energy drinks have been sold
worldwide for more than a decade, there is a paucity of evidence supporting their
effectiveness of enhancing aerobic performance in athletes.2 Geis et al (1994) 3

endurance time and lower heart rates on Red Bull which was attributed to
increased catecholamine circulation while, Alford et al (2001) 4 indicated improved
aerobic, anaerobic and psychomotor performance. Taken together, these results
suggest that Red Bull has the potential to improve physical and mental
performance.4 Baum et al (2001) found improvement in cardiac contractility of
endurance trained subjects after consumption of Red
Bull. The authors reported improved cardiac output which they attributed to a
reduced end systolic volume.5 Umana-Alvarado et al (2004) reported lower rating
of perceived exertion and also no improved run times in 11 male endurance runner
when consuming 6 ml/kg-1 body weight of an energy drink 30 minutes before the
two 10 km cross-country races.6 Byars et al (2006) reported the pre-exercise drink
positively influenced energy and endurance on indices of maximal
cardiorespiratory
fitness.7
There are a limited number of studies supporting the use and qualitative ranking of
these products. Several studies have been done among Iranian athletes.8,9
Furthermore, dietary intakes of Iranians have its own unique characteristics and it
remains unknown whether consumption of these drinks would be of any benefit
among athletes consuming Iranian dietary patterns or not.10 Therefore, the
effectiveness of two caffeine and taurine-containing energy drinks (Red Bull
produced in Austria and Hype produced in Netherlands) on VO2max, time to
exhaustion, and heart rate variables and blood lactate levels in male athletes was
evaluated. In addition, it was tested to see if the combined constituents of these
drinks have ergogenic effects on exercise performance.
Methods
Subjects
After filling out questionnaires related to health and exercise history, from eligible
athletes (healthy and active), ten male athlete students of Tehran University in the
field of "physical education" (age: 22.4 } 2.1 years, height: 180.8 } 7.7 cm, weight:
74.2 } 8.5 kg) were volunteered to take part in this study. The type of exercise they
performed was regular aerobic and anaerobic exercises. Each male had given
informed consent to participate in this research. Subjects included in this study if
they were physically active and moderate caffeine users, and had no known
sensitivity to test components or to any ingredient contained in the energy drinks.
They also were not diabetic and take medication or nutritional supplementation and
had no evidence of cardiac problems.2,4
Instruments
Exercise Test
The Bruce treadmill test was used as exercise test. The Bruce protocol is started at
stage 1 with a speed of 2.74 km/h and grade of 10%. Every three minutes speed
and grade were adjusted until the participants can no longer perform, ideally
between 9 and 15 minutes. For example, stage 2 should be 4.02 km/h and 12%
grade, stage 3 should be 5.47 km/h and 14% grade, and so on. This test was
performed in three sessions and four days apart from each
other.2
Procedures
One week prior to the first session of the test, subjects had a familiarization
session to be instructed on how to perform each test.2,13 Also, before the testing,

Discussion
The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Red Bull and Hype
energy drinks on selected indices of maximal cardiorespiratory fitness and blood
lactate levels in male athletes. Results of this study indicated that ingestion of Red
Bull and Hype prior to exercise testing is effective on some indices of
cardiorespiratory fitness but not on the blood lactate levels. In the present study it
was observed that Red Bull and Hype energy drinks caused an 11.5% and 9.9%
increase in VO2max vs. placebo, respectively. Potentially, caffeine could have a
number of actions that affect skeletal and heart muscle. It can inhibit adenosine
receptors, increase sympathetic activity, and has direct intracellular action. The
increase in VO2max may be attributed to ingredients such as caffeine, taurine,
glucuronolactone and B group vitamins in these beverages. Caffeine has been
shown to have desirable effects for performing athletes fighting fatigue, increasing
energy, enhancing fatty acid metabolism and increasing skeletal muscle
contractility. The stimulant effect of caffeine could make it effective for increasing
alertness while performing in a fatigued state. The increased metabolism of free
fatty acids has been proven to be useful during endurance exercise because of the
glycogen sparing effects allowing an athlete to increase exercise time.18 Taurine
can also aid in the contractile function of skeletal muscle. Taurine works to
increase calcium content in the sarcoplasmic reticulum providing increased ability
of the muscle to contract, amplifying muscle force generation.1,19 This may also

energy resource.4 The Red Bull and Hype energy drinks contain also B group
vitamins.
In this study it was found that Red Bull and Hype energy drinks caused up to
10.5% and 9.7% increase in time to exhaustion vs. placebo. The findings of
Umana-Alvarado et al (2004) don't support the present results.6 However, the
present findings are in agreement with results of Geis et al (1994).3 The increase
in timeto exhaustion may be due to absence of carbohydrate, caffeine and taurine.
It is well established that carbohydrate is the preferred fuel for short-duration, high-
intensity exercise and longer duration, higher intensity exercise 21 and that
depletion of muscle glycogen and blood glucose limit exercise duration and
performance. 22 Caffeine ingestion may enhance time to exhaustion because as
mentioned earlier it has been implicated in increasing lipolysis from adipose tissue
and thus enhancing fat oxidation resulting in spared stored glycogen during intense
and prolonged exercise.23,24 Results of Zhang et al (2004) indicated significant
increases in VO2max, time to exhaustion and maximal workload in exercise-test
when consuming a taurine supplement. The authors postulate that this could be
due to taurine attenuating exercise-induced DNA damage and increase of the
capacity of exercise because of its cellular protective properties.25 In the present
study, consumption of energy drinks did not affect our subjects HR. These findings
support the results of Baum et al (2001), Bichler et al (2006) and Alford et al

Utrecht University show that Red Bull Energy Drink is successful in reducing
subjective driver sleepiness.
METHODOLOGY
INGREDIENTS
Apart from caffeine, Red Bull Energy Drink contains inter alia thefollowing
ingredients; taurine, glucuronolactone, B vitamins, inositol and sugars. The
amount of caffeine in a 250 ml can of Red Bull Energy Drink is similar to that
contained in one cup of coffee. Dr. Joris Verster: The combination of functional
ingredients is the most likely cause of the positive effects on driving ability.

The main purpose of the study was to determine if the intake of a commercially
available energy drink enhanced motor performance in male athletes. A double-
blind, randomized-crossover study was carried on 11 athletes who completed two
10 km cross-country races. Subjects drank 6 mlkg-1 body mass of an energetic
drink or a placebo beverage 30 min before the race. Statistical analysis included
analysis of variance, repeated measures t-student, and McNemar 2 tests on the
dependent variables, urine specific gravity, ratings of perceived exertion, heart
rate, gastrointestinal symptoms, and performance time. The results indicated that
no significant differences were found between mean racing times; however, ratings
of perceived exertion were significantly lower when participants ingested the
energy drink (energy drink= 7.02 1.21 vs. placebo = 8.01 0.75) (p < .05). No
significant associations were found between the energy drink or the placebo and
gastrointestinal symptoms. Finally, no specific personality type was related to the
placebo effect. In conclusion, even though athletes did not improve their racing
times when consuming the energy drink, their perceived exertion was lower during
the running trials. key words : Energy drinks; Placebo effect; Aerobic

Introduction
The concept of energetic' or energy drink' (ED) has been used for several years since these
beverages have been available in the European market for more than a decade (Seidl, Peyri,
Nicham & Hauser, 2000). 'Energy drinks' differ in composition and purpose from 'sport drinks'. From
one hand, sports drinks were designed in the late 80's; whereas energy drinks appeared in the
early 90's. Sec dly, sports drinks have been widely studied (Maughan & Murray, 2001), whereas
energy drinks have not. Finally, sports drinks have been marketed to replenish fluid and electrolytes
in sports settings, while energy drinks have been promoted to avoid sleepiness and other functions.
However, athletes have been recently consuming energy drinks, with little or no support at all for
their purported benefit. According to Bonci (2002), high expectations have arisen around ED; for
example, they are considered a fast means to obtain 'extra energy' to get through the demands of a
regular day, compensate for a perceived deficiency in vitamins, minerals, herbs, or some other
nutrient, boost endurance, accelerate recovery from exercise, burn fat and/or increase lean muscle
mass, and Received : 13 June 2005, Accepted : 15 November 2005, Correspondence :
Jos Moncada-Jimnez (jmoncada@cariari.ucr.ac.cr) Consumption of an 'Energy Drink' does not
Improve Aerobic Performance in Male Athletes 27 improve brain function. Recently, it has been
reported that some consumers have used ED in addition to alcoholic beverages to enhance their
energy and to avoid sleepiness (Reyner & Horne, 2002; Ferreira, Hartmann Quadros, Trindade,
Takahashi, Koyama, & Souza-Formigoni, 2004). However, there are only a few studies in which the
effects of ED on motor performance variables have been assessed. In a study by Geiss, Jester,
Falke, Hamm and Wang (1994), the researchers assessed the effect of a taurine-containing drink
on the endurance performance of a group of athletes. The main result of the study was an
improvement in performance when athletes consumed 500 ml of the taurine-drink. In another study,
Mucignat-Caretta (1998) investigated a group of 6 males and 6 females who underwent a series of
reaction time tasks following ingestion of the ED Red Bull , a placebo, and a control condition (no
drink). According to Mucignat-Caretta (1998), males achieved faster reaction times than females;
however, the significant differences were only in the female group when comparing the three
experimental conditions. Females achieved faster reaction times following ED consumption,
compared to the placebo drink and the control condition. Finally, Alford, Cox and Wescott (2001)
studied the effect of the ED Red Bull on endurance performance and it was found that compared
to carbonated water, ED ingestion delayed the time to exhaustion. The physiological mechanisms
explaining the purported improvement in physical performance are not clearly understood. For
instance, Baum & Wei (2001), suggested that increases in maximal oxygen consumption due to a
higher cardiac contractility might result from ingesting the ingredients found in an energy drink (e.g.,
taurine, caffeine). Similarly, Barthel, Mechau, Schnittker, Liesen, and Wei (2001), indicated that
the caffeine and taurine content of the energy drinks might be responsible for the enhancements in
motor responses. Based on the findings of their study, the consumption of an energy drink might
improve the function of the cortical regions responsible for the anticipation and preparation of a
movement. However, Alford et al. (2001) did not report differences in heart rate, systolic and
diastolic blood pressure when comparing Red Bull energy
drink with carbonated water and a control condition (no drink). Therefore, in spite of the
physiological statements presented by Bonci (2002), and the findings reported in the investigations
of Geiss et al. (1994) and Alford et al. (2001), there are few scientific studies that systematically
assess the effect of ED on the physical performance in athletes. Based on the limited evidence
accumulated so far in laboratory settings, these researchers have suggested that the potential
physiologic effect of an energy drink might be in the cardiac contractility, specifically a taurine-
mediated higher stroke volume and ejection fraction. However, the evidence of the positive effect of
energy drinks still deserve to be further studied in order to discard a possible placebo effect and
consequently to provide a solid recommendation about its use as a potential ergogenic aid by
athletes. According to Clark, Hopkins, Hawley, and Burke (1999), the placebo effect is a favorable
result caused by believing one has been exposed to a beneficial treatment. Some researchers
(Beecher, 1960; Evans, 1985; Price & Fields, 1997) have suggested that depressed, anxious and
stressed subjects are more susceptible to the influence of a placebo or tend to increase the placebo
effect; 28 M. U. Alvarado, & J. M. Jimnez on the other hand, authoritarian and independent
persons are less susceptible to the influence of a placebo (McCann, Goldfarb, Flisk, Quera-Salva, &
Meyer, 1992). Turner et al. (1994), also mention that there is an intra-subject variability when
subjects are exposed to a placebo, which means that there is more research to be done in order to
determine if there is actually a more susceptible personality to the placebo effect. As mentioned
before, the limited evidence carried out in laboratory settings prevent to offer recommendations as
to whether energy drinks might improve or not performance in real competitions or outdoor
activities. Therefore, the main purpose of this field study was to determine if the intake of an ED
before a run improved performance of male athletes in a cross-country race, in comparison to a PL
beverage. A secondary purpose was to investigate if a specific type of personality relates to the
placebo effect.Method Participants Eleven males participated in the study; five of them were regular
caffeine consumers and six did not consume caffeine regularly. Regular caffeine consumers have
been defined as those who drink at least 1 cup of coffee or caffeinated beverage per day for more
than 1 year (Seidl et al., 2000). Participants mean age was 30.18 11.50 years. The volunteers
were runners and/or triathletes, and accounted an average experience in sports of 8.67 7.37
years and a minimum of 10 hours of weekly training. The study was approved by the Ethics
Scientific Committee of the University of Costa Rica. Written informed consent was obtained from
each subject. Measurement instrumentsParticipants completed questionnaires to estimate their
caffeine intake, to register their personal information and the frequency of gastrointestinal problems
after each test. This questionnaire was developed and administered by a registered dietitian during
the recruitment phase of the study. The Profile of Mood States (POMS) is a 65-item scale and it
was used to determine mood changes when consuming the beverages. Briefly, the POMS consist
of 6 subscales: tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue, confusion (Macnair, Lorr, & Dropplemen,
1964). The 21-Personality SubFactors test (Aguilar & Gonzalez, 1995), was used to assess
possible relationships between personality types and the placebo effect. This personality test was
developed for the Costa Rican population based on the work by Eysenck (1991), and it provides
three basic personality types: a) introversion/extraversion; b) emotional stability/neuroticism, and c)
normality/psychoticism. In addition, ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded following
each race (Aragon & Fernandez, 1995). In order to measure RPE, the participant is asked to rate
his perceived effort Consumption of an 'Energy Drink' does not Improve Aerobic Performance in
Male Athletes 29 based on a 6 to 20 scale, where 6 means "no effort at all" and 20 means "the
maximal effort" (Borg, 1998). Based in this description, it is expected that at rest the participants
rate their perceived exertion in the lower numbers, and during maximal exercise do the opposite.
This psychological scale is useful in field studies, and it has been shown to correlate positively to
physiological measures (i.e., heart rate) (Borg, 1998). Experimental beverages were kept at 15 C
in a refrigerator. Fluids were provided in dull bottles to avoid identification by the participants. An
electronic scale (A & D, model UC-300, Engineering, Inc., USA), chronometers, a WARE Squibb
urinometer and a Quest environment thermal monitor, model QT-34 were also used to record body
weight (kg), performance time (min), urine density (g/ml), and environmental
conditions. Procedures A double-blind, randomized-crossover study was carried on male athletes
who completed in two different occasions a 10 km cross-country run in their best possible time.
Dependent variables measured were urine density, body weight, racing time, perceived exertion,
heart rate, and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms.
Pilot test The 10 km run test depends basically on the reserves of muscular glycogen; therefore, we
aimed at best controlling the preexisting conditions of hydration, physical activity and nutrition.
Instructions were given to all participants regarding the requisites to perform the study. In addition,
subjects were requested to bring their first urine in order to measure hydration status. The subjects
drank 6 mlkg-1 body mass of a PL solution 30 minutes before the race in order to set up their
tolerance to the beverage when exercising. Based on the information provided for the participants, it
was decided to maintain the volume for each beverage during the actual experiment.
Experimental trials There was a one-week difference between the first and second trials.
Participants consumed either an ED or a PL. The commercially-available ED provided (for 100 ml)
205.2 kJ (i.e., 49 kcal) energy, 0.4 g protein, 11.5 g CHO, 0 g fat, 8.0 mg niacin, 2.0 mg panthotenic
acid, 1.8 mg vitamin B6, 0.6 mg vitamin B2, 1.0 mg vitamin B12, 400 mg taurine, and 32 mg
caffeine. The PL was made of carbonated water, fruit juice and a powdered refreshment mixture.
This beverage contained the same amount of carbohydrates as the ED. Participants were advised
that both beverages were energetic though only one actually was. Subjects were euhydrated as
demonstrated by urine specific gravity values the normal range (1.002 and 1.028 g/ml) (Table 1),
and physical activity and eating instructions were given before each test. Participants arrived to the
laboratory in fasting conditions, and 90 minutes before each trial they were given a standard
breakfast, which supplied an average of 1 g CHO kg-1 body mass 30 M. U. Alvarado, & J. M.
Jimnez and 1528 kJ (i.e., 365 kcal). The POMS was applied before and after drinking as well as
following the exercise test. Each participant drank 6 ml kg-1 body mass of the beverage 30
minutes before the race. Consequently, the mean caffeine and taurine consumption was 1.90 and
24 mg kg-1 body mass, respectively. Athletes were not allowed to drink or eat during the race;
however, they could splash themselves and rinse their mouths with water.
