Lesson12
5. QUICK READ An earthquake

Read and think about the following article.

An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the result of a

sudden release of energy in the Earth'scrust that creates seismic waves. The
seismicityor seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of
earthquakes experienced over a period of time. Earthquakes are measured using
observations from seismometers. The moment magnitude is the most common
scale on which earthquakes larger than approximately 5 are reported for the
entire globe. The more numerous earthquakes smaller than magnitude 5 repor-
ted by national seismological observatories are measured mostly on the local
magnitude scale, also referred to as the Richter scale. These two scales are nume-
rically similar over their range of validity. Magnitude 3 or lower earthquakes are
mostly almost imperceptible and magnitude 7 and over potentially cause serious
damage over large areas, depending on their depth. The largest earthquakes in
historic times have been of magnitude slightly over 9, although there is no limit
to the possible magnitude. The most recent large earthquake of magnitude 9.0 or
larger was a 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan in 2011 (as of March 2011), and
it was the largest Japanese earthquake since records began. Intensity of shaking
is measured on the modified Mercalli scale. The shallower an earthquake, the
more damage to structures it causes, all else being equal.[1]
At the Earth's surface, earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and someti-
mes displacement of the ground. When the epicenter of a large earthquake is
located offshore, the seabed may be displaced sufficiently to cause a tsunami.
Earthquakes can also trigger landslides, and occasionally volcanic activity.

In its most general sense, the word earthquake is used to describe any seismic
event whether natural or caused by humans that generates seismic waves.

Lesson12

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

Most greenhouses look like a small glass house. Greenhouses are used to grow
plants, especially in winter. Greenhouses work by trapping heat from the sun. The
glass panels of the greenhouse let in light but keep heat from escaping. This
causes the greenhouse to heat up, much like the inside of a car parked in sunlight,
and keeps the plants warm enough to live in winter.

The Greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain
gases in the atmosphere (water vapour, carbon dioxide, and others) trap energy from the sun.
Without these gases the temperature drops.

The Greenhouse effect is important. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth
would not be warm enough for humans to live. But if the greenhouse effect
becomes stronger, it could make the Earth warmer than usual. Even a little extra
warming may cause problems for humans, plants, and animals. That is called
GLOBAL WARMING.

Answer these questions in your notebook.

What is a greenhouse? Why is the greenhouse effect important?
What is the greenhouse effect. What gases does the Earth need in the atmosphere?

The most popular pets for children are cats, dogs, birds, fishes,
rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and mice. Older people, for

Do the wolves live as a family or alone?

2. Read.

Wolves are very social animals and do

everything together.
They live, play, hunt, raise cubs, howl, eat
and roam together.
A wolf pack is a bunch of wolves related to
each other. A pack of wolves vary in size from 4
wolves to 23 wolves. Now 23 is a big pack and
many times it is divided in two packs. Every
pack has cubs, a male wolf leader, and a female
wolf leader; both are called the ALPHA WOLF.
The next male or female in the line command is
called the BETA WOLF. The alpha male and
female make cubs. In the pack, there is an
OMEGA WOLF. This is usually the least aggressive wolf in the pack. When the pack goes hunting,
the omega wolf protects the cubs and its a great baby sitter. Small packs dont have an omega wolf.
When a wolf wants to form a new pack, this wolf needs to find a mate and creates its own area, they
need a lot of travelling to find a piece of land, and of course, they need to make cubs.
