LESSON 8

Old House
Let's Read New House
The Dales bought a house in a peaceful neighborhood. The minute they saw it they knew
it was the sort of house they had been looking for. It was the perfect place to settle down
now they were retired. However, it was a bit run-down and needed some repairs. The
gate was falling apart, the lawn was overgrown, the path to the main entrance was
covered with leaves, the main door lock was broken, some roof tiles were missing. The
paint on the walls and the porch was peeling off, the floor carpeting was stained. The
kitchen cupboards and cabinets were scratched, the bathroom sink was clogged. The
electric wires were rusty.

Mrs. Dale was excited about refurbishing the house because her husband was a
good handyman. However, he thought he couldn't do it all by himself so they had to get some help.
Mrs. Dale got her husband to mow the lawn, and to rake the dead leaves. She also got him to paint some walls.
They had a carpenter fix the gate. They also had the kitchen furniture repaired.
They had an electrician mend the wires.

Mrs. Dale didn't let Mr. Dale wash the carpet because he had a terrible
backache, so she made him call a carpet cleaner.
Then they had a locksmith change the lock and had a plumber unblock the
sink.
Finally, they had the roof tiles replaced.
Now, they're sitting in the porch enjoying the view and having a glass of
wine celebrating their first year in the house of their dreams

JANE EYRE
By Charlotte Bront
CHAPTER 2
Lowood School
Aunt Reed and I didn't speak much after Mr.
Brocklehurst's visit and even the children stayed away
from me. Only Bessie showed me some kindness and I
would miss her. On the day I left Gateshead she was
the only one to wish me good luck.

The ride in the carriage was so tiring that as soon as I

got into my room I slept. I was awoken by a harsh
voice. <Silence!> Ms. Miller shouted.

Soon afterwards we were marching into a classroom.

When the first lessons finished we had a burnt porridge
for breakfast, which I thought it was delicious as I was
starving. Lunch time passed quickly and the lessons
went on one after the other with no time to speak to any
of my classmates.

Helen Burns was the first girl I talked to. She was nice to me even though the teachers didn't like her and
soon we became friends. She told me all about Lowood School and that Miss Temple was the best teacher.
Lowood Shchool was almost a nightmare. Days were long and cold, there was little food, the lessons were
endless and the teachers were mean.

One day Mr. Brocklehurst came into our class and pointed at one of the girls
with long curly hair, who happened to be Helen.

<Girls are not allowed to dress their hair, they must be plain!>

<It's her natural hair.>, explained Miss Temple.

<Her hair will be cut off tomorrow.>

He gazed at all of us and his eyes fell on me.

<Go to the front and sit on that stool.> He said mean things about me to the class.

I spent all day sitting there as a punishment just because he didn't like me. I had never felt so humiliated in my
life.

A week later they found out that Mr. Broclehurst had said about me was cruel and unfair. The only two people at
Lowood School, who were always next to me, were sweet Miss Temple and Helen, whose health seemed to be
weak in those days.
