CHAPTER 3
A new beginning
Spring has just arrived, but many of the girls had become sick with fever and Lowood was more likely a hospital than a
school. Unfortunately Helen's cough has gotten worst and one night in June, I felt like talking to her so I crept in her
bedroom and spoke softly to her, it was far too cold that she let me get into her bed.
The next morning when I woke up I realized she was dead. My best friend has just gone. I was alone again in that
miserable place.
Thornfield Hall was a big house, but looked friendly. I was shown straight into a cosy parlour where I met Mrs. Fairfax,
the housekeeper.
<You look cold, Mrs. Eyre. Sit down by the fire and have a sandwich and a hot drink.>
We talked about my pupil, Adele Varens, who was French. Mr. Rochester, her guardian, needed a governess for her,
which is why Mrs. Fairfax had answered my advertisement. I felt very pleased with Mrs. Fairfax so it was very late by
the time she showed me to my room, which was small but warm and comfortable.
The next morning, I met Adele, who was sweet and charming but undisciplined after the morning lessons, Mrs.
Fairfax took me on a tour of the house; then we had afternoon lessons, I heard a strange laugh and a scream <What
was that?> <Oh, don't worry that's just Grace Poole and Leah, servants, when they get together they are very noisy.>
I started going for walks after lessons just like I had at Lowood.
One late afternoon in January when I was having one of my traditional walks I heard the sound of house's hooves
coming towards me. The path was narrow, a large dog ran past me and then a black horse and a rider and then the
horse slipped on some ice and fell. The rider got up but was limping, <Are you hurt, sir? Shall I get help from Thornfield
or the village?>
<No, thank you. I am all right.>
He tried to walk but he couldn't use his right leg properly.

<Come here and let me lean on you. If I can get onto my horse, I can get home. And where is your home?>
recognized the figure as the rider I had seen the day before, he said nothing about the previous incident, but he
asked me about my life before I came to Thornfield. He went on to ask me what I could teach and what I could do.
I played the piano for him and showed him my paintings. He said not much.
<He has had a hard life, his brother is dead, and he hasn't gotten on well with his family, he hardly ever comes
home and spends his life wandering all over the world alone.>
I had the feeling that Mrs. Fairfax was not telling me all the truth, there was something gloomy about that dark
figure.
Days went on and Adele and me continued with our classes. But one evening, he asked me to bring Adele to him.
Adele was really excited, she ran to a box on the table and began to unwrap it.
<Miss Eyre, tell Mrs. Fairfax to come down, I want to talk to you.>
Soon after Mr. Rochester began to ask some very odd questions and she tried to be as truthful as possible.
<Miss Eyre, you answer my questions honestly and are not afraid of me! I like that!>
When Adele returned to the room, Mr. Rochester did indeed look very sad, probably because Adele will look like
her mother, who was an opera singer, but she had left him and gone to Italy.
