Classification of Oil Palm

Class :Liliopsida Monocotyledons

Family :Arecaceae Palm family

Species :Elaeis guineensis Jacq. African oil palm

General introduction of Oil Palm

Oil palm is belongs to family Arecaceae (Palm family) and was originated in the tropical rain
forest region of West Africa. It grows in natural and semi-wild or under cultivation
throughout most of the tropical countries between the latitudes 15o N to 15o S. Oil palm is
indigenous to Africa, expands large number of countries in the west coastal part of Africa in a
belt width of 50 -500 km from Senegal to Angola and it further expands in to central African
countries along the Congo river. In the beginning of early 19th century oil palm is cultivated
on a large scale in South East Asian countries such as Indonesia (1911) and Malaysia (1917).
Thereafter was spread into various parts of African countries and Latin America, South Asia
including Sri Lanka (1968).

Plant

Mature palms are single-stemmed and grow up to 20m or more depends on the soil
conditions. The leavers are pinnate and each leaf (frond) reaches between 3- 5 m in length
and 8 year old mature tree produces 20 24 fronds per year. Oil palm is a monoecious plant
as it bears both female and male flowers in the same tree. Each palm produces compact
bunches weighing 10 30 kg and some times more than 40 kg. Each bunches were with
1000-3000 fruits. In cultivated varieties unripe fruit- lets in a bunch are dark purple or almost
black in colour and the colour turns to orange red when it rips.

Oil palm is identified as one of the few palms produces commercial scale oil from both the
mesocarp and the seed kernel. It is identified as highest oil producing crop in the world.
Oil/bunch is about 21-23 %.

Page 4 SRI LANKAN STUDENTS ASSOCIATION IN JAPAN

THARANGA 2017

Figure1. Cross section of oil palm fruit

Palm oil is extracted from the fleshy outer layer (mesocarp) of the fruits and palm kernel oil
is extracted from the kernels (seed) of the palm. These two oils (palm oil and palm kernel oil)
are deferent in its chemical and physical properties. Palm oil has become one of the
highly used vegetable oils. Firstly palm oil is used in edible fats, manufacturing of soup and
other detergents, candle and tinplate industries. Secondly palm kernel oil is highly used in
manufacturing of edible fats and soap. Palm kernel oil is very similar to coconut oil.

The residue left after extracting the oil from kernels, palm kernel cake is valuable in the
formulation of animal feeds. In the future palm oil will become important as a source of
energy (bio energy), renewable resources for producer countries as well as to the entire
world. It is identified as reliable fuel for automobiles. Palm oil is already being produced
more cheaply in many countries than their pump price of fossil fuel. Therefore future
potential demand for palm oil will be well secured.

Oil Palm in Sri Lanka

Oil palm (Elaeis guneensis) was first introduced to Sri Lanka well over a century ago

Palms which are over 35 to 40 years old can be seen at peradeniya, Agalawatta,
Ruwanwella, and Udugama

The first Oil Palm nursery in this country was established at Nakiyadeniya in 1966
and a total of 150 ha had been planted by 1972

First Oil Palm refinery factory was established at Nakiyadeniya estate.

By 1981 the area under Oil Palm had expanded to 870 ha

All these are grown under rain fed conditions

First commercial Oil Palm plantation in Sri Lanka is Nakiyadeniya Estatae located in
wet zone which contains Red Yellow Podzolic soils

By year 2000, it was further expanded to 03 Regional Plantation Companies (RPC) in

Kalutara and Matara districts. The second Oil Palm refinery factory (AEN) was
established in Kalutara district in year 2007.

Very recently there are two small holder farmers reported from Kalutara district.

SRI LANKAN STUDENTS` ASSOCIATION IN JAPAN Page 5

THARANGA 2017
In 2008, Oil Palm cultivated extent with 4 RPCs (Agalawatte, Elpitiya, Namunukula
& Watawala) and SLSPC stood at 5,408 ha

In alignment with Ministerial Policy concluded in 2010 on expansion of Oil Palm

cultivation up to 25,000 ha, the RPCs alone are targeting to expand total extent
cultivated from present level to 10,000 ha by 2016

Mature extent of Oil Palm was 4,517 ha in 2008 and expanded to 4,582 ha in 2009
and further to 4,761 in 2010

However, in 2012 it was 4,719 ha recording a marginal decline

In the year 2013, total cultivated extent was 7,780 ha which is a 1,165 ha increase
from previous year

In addition to new planting extent of 583 ha recorded for Kotagala, Regional

Plantation Company (RPC), other 4 RPCs undertook replanting of their old
Plantations in a gradual manner.

At present Oil palm cultivation is confined mainly to RPCs while a small extent is
maintained under Sri Lanka State Plantation Corporation (SLSPC).

THARANGA 2017

Today a website is an essential thing for research, as a blog

for creative ideas, for business or to our organizations. It is
pretty useful to know how to make a website on our own.
SLSAJ also maintains its website (slsaj.com) on their own. If
you get a quotation from a company to design a website for
you it will cost more than 50,000 yen, so why we don't try
ourselves? basic steps.
1) To maintain a website, we need to get a domain name (like slsaj.com).
(.com .org etc.)
You can find domain providers easily on the web. When deciding a domain name,
we need to consider an extension such as .com (for commercial) .org (for
organization) .info etc. or with country codes like .jp .lk etc. Even though these
extensions are not strictly reserved for those categories, it is better to get a matching
extension. There are very cheap extensions as well .fun . xyz etc. (e.g. :
l websites.
2) To host (to serve) our website, we need a server (a computer).
Storage (1GB, 10GB etc)
Here we need to consider how much storage (hard disk space) we need. If you
have several thousands of hits in a month, then you need to consider about CPU
and RAM of the server too. It is cheap to rent a server from a hosting company
then we personally maintain our own server.

3) Content!
Website is a piece of a text file, there are no colors or designs like what we see on
the screen. But we need to define them separately by codes (HTML for the content,
CSS for styles). Following code and the figure are a self-explanatory example.

However, you do not need to worry about the codes. You can use the free templates
provided by WordPress J (SLSAJ website use WordPress). These tools
provide a user interface so you just have to update the website like in Facebook in
fact even you can post to the website using email or sending a FB message. Most
hosting providers provide easy one click installation for these tools.

Living Abroad
Living abroad means living away from your familiar zones, being a stranger to those who
surround you, and missing all your loved ones. You are moving to a new place, struggle to
settle in the new environment, and try to fit with a new cultural and traditional expectations,
.
I came to Japan as a stupid master student to pursue my master studies in a famous place.
In the beginning you get lost with how to utilize the newly gained freedom, and meanwhile
you start struggling about time management. Finally you learn that you have to take care of
yourself, cook and clean your house, while saving some time to do your studies. You start
e
activities that s,
your crushes or your academic supervisor.
It will take a while for someone to realize how important it is to stay healthy and fit. I was
taking everything easy until I realized how difficult it is to take care of myself while being
sick. Once you lose apatite due to the sickness, it is difficult to make up the mind to
consume plain-tasted food from supermarkets; and hence you end up cooking, while having
energy drinks or fresh milk to help you stand. After one cycle of sickness, you start to realize
how valuable it is to remain healthy,
So you basically stop experimenting with your body, and start
eating healthy food, wear safe and warm cloths and invest on a good rest to stay safe and
healthy.
With all these, you start missing love and care you received from your family and friends,
and you learn how important they are to our lives. You start missing the conversations you
had in your mother tongue, because speaking in a foreign language with people from
different cultures never becomes the same as the gossiping and nagging with your fellows in
home country. As a solution to this desire of talking in your mother tongue, you start
communicating with Sri Lankans, but end up being discouraged as a result of their
continuous curiosity on your relationship status and attempts on match-making.
Despite your endless effort made to fit into the cultural and traditional values of your new
place, you will still end up being a stranger to the others. You will not be able to forget the
curious and suspicious stares at your brown colored skin. Whatever happens around you,
which may be a kid crying, something falling down or an alarm ringing, everyone will first
look at you, while you are still wondering what really happened. Later on, you will start
enjoying being a stranger, and will start ignoring what really happens around you. You will
learn that this country itself has lot of problems; the population is aging, and they really
miss love and kindness. So you start pitying and continue being kind and respectful, despite
how you are being treated.
Living abroad is not a challenge. It is a journey filled with multifarious scenery. At the end of
the day, you will have the memories of the most interesting scenery, while the tiredness will
turn you into a totally strong, different piece of work with a postgraduate degree
qualification attached to your name.

Sri Lanka A perfect place to experience the pristine wildlife

Page 32 SRI LANKAN STUDENTS ASSOCIATION IN JAPAN

THARANGA 2017

From the age of 6 months I have been taken on trips to the jungles of Sri Lanka by my parents. And I
am continuing to do so as a 27 year old currently with my parents and friends. It has been running in my
familys blood to enjoy roaming the jungles and to be alongside wildlife of different sizes, shapes and
colors be it from elephants, birds, and leopards to sloth bears. That love for the bush and its animals which
runs in my veins makes me want to return to the jungle almost once every two months even with the busy
schedule as an ERP systems consultant. The amazingly unique experiences, moments that I encounter in
the jungles made me buy a camera purely to capture them so that I can
cherish them later on with my family & friends.

pleasure and self-satisfaction. I share what I capture through my lens on social media such as Facebook
and Instagram to show everyone else the pure beauty of what is out there. I believe that such awareness
will inspire people to consider more about conservation rather than destruction of nature.

Wilpattu National Park & Yala National Park

are two of the most favorite jungles that I love
going back to in Sri Lanka. I consider them as my
homes away from home. Those are the two places
that takes my worries away and puts me at
complete peace far away from people. I love being
amongst the trees of the wilderness and all sorts
of wildlife that surrounds them but I have to
confess that elephants, leopards and sloth bears
are the ones which I go in search for the most.

Ive had countless amazingly wild encounters

through the years and I would not even try to
explain them in words purely because I cannot do
justice to them using words. However, watching
5 leopards (An adult male & female with their 3
cubs) together on a rock, following a mother sloth
bear carrying her two cubs on her back and being
surrounded by 32 wild elephants mere meters
away for 1 hour stands out from the rest.

I will continue to return back to the

jungles and do what I love to do the
most till the day I pass on from this life.

I hope and pray that more people would come

forward to cherish and protect the jungles and wildlife
around the world so that they get preserved for
generations to come. Due to the space limitations, I
am presenting only a few of my clicks here in this
Tharanga magazine and I mostly welcome you all to
follow me on my Instagram account (manindra.d) to
see what I experience within the jungles of Sri Lanka.
Much Love,
Manindra Dharmadasa.
