Tothemostreverendandlikemindedbrother,Alexander,AlexandersendsgreetingintheLord:

1.Theambitiousandavariciouswillofwickedmenisalwayswonttolaysnaresagainst
thosechurcheswhichseemgreater,byvariouspretextsattackingtheecclesiasticalpietyofsuch.For
incitedbythedevilwhoworksinthem,tothelustofthatwhichissetbeforethem,andthrowing
awayallreligiousscruples,theytrampleunderfootthefearofthejudgmentofGod.Concerning
whichthings,Iwhosuffer,havethoughtitnecessarytoshowtoyourpiety,inorderthatyoumay
beawareofsuchmen,lestanyofthempresumetosetfootinyourdioceses,whetherbythemselves
orbyothersforthesesorcerersknowhowtousehypocrisytocarryouttheirfraudandtoemploy
letterscomposedanddressedoutwithlies,whichareabletodeceiveamanwhoisintentupona
simpleandsincerefaith.Arius,therefore,andAchilles,havinglatelyenteredintoaconspiracy,
emulatingtheambitionofColluthus,haveturnedoutfarworsethanhe.ForColluthus,indeed,who
reprehendstheseverymen,foundsomepretextforhisevilpurposebutthese,beholdinghis
batteringofChrist,endurednolongertobesubjecttotheChurchbutbuildingforthemselvesdens
ofthieves,theyholdtheirassembliesinthemunceasingly,nightanddaydirecting
theircalumniesagainstChristandagainstus.Forsincetheycallinquestionallpiousanddoctrine,
afterthemanneroftheJews,theyhaveconstructedaworkshopforcontendingagainstChrist,
denyingtheGodheadofourSaviour,andpreachingthatHeisonlytheequalofallothers.And
havingcollectedallthepassageswhichspeakofHisplanofsalvationandHishumiliationforour
sakes,theyendeavourfromthesetocollectthepreachingoftheirimpiety,ignoringaltogetherthe
passagesinwhichHiseternalGodheadandunutterableglorywiththeFatherissetforth.Since,
therefore,theybackuptheimpiousopinionconcerningChrist,whichisheldbytheJewsand
Greeks,ineverypossiblewaytheystrivetogaintheirapprovalbusyingthemselvesaboutallthose
thingswhichtheyarewonttoderideinus,anddailystirringupagainstusseditions
andpersecutions.Andnow,indeed,theydragusbeforethetribunalsofthejudges,byintercourse
withsillyanddisorderlywomen,whomtheyhaveledintoerroratanothertimetheycast
opprobriumandinfamyupontheChristianreligion,theiryoungmaidensdisgracefullywandering
abouteveryvillageandstreet.Nay,evenChrist'sindivisibletunic,whichHisexecutionerswere
unwillingtodivide,thesewretcheshavedaredtorend.

2.Andwe,indeed,thoughwediscoveredratherlate,onaccountoftheirconcealment,theirmanner
oflife,andtheirunholyattempts,bythecommonsuffrageofallhavecastthemforthfromthe
congregationoftheChurchwhichadorestheGodheadofChrist.Butthey,runninghereandthere
againstus,havebeguntobetakethemselvestoourcolleagueswhoareofthesamemindwithusin
appearance,indeed,pretendingtoseekforpeaceandconcord,butinrealityseekingtodrawover
someofthembyfairwordstotheirowndiseases,askinglongwordylettersfromthem,inorder
thatreadingthesetothemenwhomtheyhavedeceived,theymaymakethemimpenitentin
theerrorsintowhichtheyhavefallen,andobdurateinimpiety,asiftheyhadbishopsthinkingthe
samethingandsidingwiththem.Moreover,thethingswhichamongustheyhavewronglytaught
anddone,andonaccountofwhichtheyhavebeenexpelledbyus,theydonotatallconfessto
them,buttheyeitherpassthemoverinsilence,orthrowingaveiloverthem,byfeignedwordsand
writingstheydeceivethem.Concealing,therefore,theirpestilentdoctrinebytheirspeciousand
flatteringdiscourse,theycircumventthemoresimplemindedandsuchasareopentofraud,nor
dotheyspareinthemeanwhiletotraduceourpietytoall.Henceitcomestopassthatsome,
subscribingtheirletters,receivethemintotheChurch,althoughinmyopinionthegreatestguilt
liesuponthoseministerswhoventuretodothisbecausenotonlydoestheapostolicrulenotallow
ofit,battheworkingofthedevilinthesemenagainstChristisbythismeansmorestrongly
kindled.Whereforewithoutdelay,brethrenbeloved,Ihavestirredmyselfuptoshowyouthe
faithlessnessofthesemenwhosaythattherewasatimewhentheSonofGodwasnotandthatHe
whowasnotbefore,cameintoexistenceafterwards,becomingsuch,whenatlengthHewasmade,
evenaseverymaniswonttobeborn.For,theysay,Godmadeallthingsfromthingswhicharenot,
comprehendingeventheSonofGodinthecreationofallthingsrationalandirrational.Towhich
thingstheyaddasaconsequence,thatHeisofmutablenature,andcapableboth
ofvirtueandvice.Andthishypothesisbeingonceassumed,thatHeis"fromthingswhichare
not,"theyoverturnthesacredwritingsconcerningHiseternity,whichsignifytheimmutabilityand
theGodheadofWisdomandtheWord,whichareChrist.

3.We,therefore,saythesewickedmen,canalsobethesonsofGodevenasHe.Foritiswritten,"I
havenourishedandbroughtupchildren."Isaiah1:2Butwhenwhatfollowswasobjectedto
them,"andtheyhaverebelledagainstme,"whichindeedisnotapplicabletothenatureof
theSaviour,whoisofanimmutablenaturethey,throwingoffallreligiousreverence,saythatGod,
sinceHeforeknewandhadforeseenthatHisSonwouldnotrebelagainstHim,choseHimfromall.
ForHedidnotchooseHimashavingbynatureanythingspeciallybeyondHisothersons,forno
oneisbynatureasonofGod,astheysayneitherashavinganypeculiarpropertyofHisownbut
GodchoseHimwhowasofamutablenature,onaccountofthecarefulnessofHismannersandHis
practice,whichinnowayturnedtothatwhichisevilsothat,ifPaulandPeterhadstrivenforthis,
therewouldhavebeennodifferencebetweentheirsonshipandHis.Andtoconfirmthisinsane
doctrine,playingwithHolyScripture,theybringforwardwhatissaidinthePsalmsrespecting
Christ:"Youloverighteousness,andhatewickedness:thereforeGod,YourGod,bathanointedYou
withtheoilofgladnessaboveYourfellows,"

4.ButthattheSonofGodwasnotmade"fromthingswhicharenot,"andthattherewasno"time
whenHewasnot,"theevangelistJohnsufficientlyshows,whenhethuswritesconcerning
Him:"TheonlybegottenSon,whoisinthebosomoftheFather."John1:18Forsincethatdivine
teacherintendedtoshowthattheFatherandtheSonaretwothingsinseparabletheonefromthe
other,hespokeofHimasbeinginthebosomoftheFather.NowthatalsotheWordofGodisnot
comprehendedinthenumberofthingsthatwerecreated"fromthingswhicharenot,"thesame
Johnsays,"AllthingsweremadebyHim."ForhesetforthHisproperpersonality,saying,"Inthe
beginningwastheWord,andtheWordwaswithGod,andtheWordwasGod.Allthingsweremade
byHimandwithoutHimwasnotanythingmadethatwasmade."John1:13Forifallthingswere
madebyHim,howcomesitthatHewhogavetothethingswhicharemadetheirexistence,atone
timeHimselfwasnot.FortheWordwhichmakesisnottobedefinedasbeingofthesamenature
withthethingswhicharemadesinceHeindeedwasinthebeginning,andallthingsweremadeby
Him,andfashioned"fromthingswhicharenot."Moreover,thatwhichisseemstobecontraryto
andfarremovedfromthosethingswhicharemade"fromthingswhicharenot."Forthatindeed
showsthatthereisnointervalbetweentheFatherandtheSon,sincenoteveninthoughtcanthe
mindimagineanydistancebetweenthem.Butthattheworldwascreated"fromthingswhichare
not,"indicatesamorerecentaandlateroriginofsubstance,sincetheuniversereceives
anessenceofthissortfromtheFatherbytheSon.When,therefore,themostpiousJohn
contemplatedtheessenceofthedivineWordataverygreatdistance,andasplacedbeyondall
conceptionofthosethingsthatarebegotten,hethoughtitnotmeettospeakofHisgenerationand
creationnotdaringtodesignatetheCreatorinthesametermsasthethingsthataremade.Not
thattheWordisunbegotten,fortheFatheraloneisunbegotten,butbecausetheinexplicable
subsistenceoftheonlybegottenSontranscendstheacutecomprehensionoftheevangelists,and
perhapsalsoofangels.

5.WhereforeIdonotthinkthatheistobereckonedamongthepiouswhopresumestoinquireinto
anythingbeyondthesethings,notlisteningtothissaying:"Seeknotoutthethingsthataretoohard
foryou,neithersearchthethingsthatareaboveyourstrength."Foriftheknowledgeofmanyother
thingsthatareincomparablyinferiortothis,arehiddenfromhumancomprehension,suchasin
theapostlePaul,"Eyehasnotseen,norearheard,neitherhaveenteredintotheheartofman,the
thingswhichGodhaspreparedforthemthatloveHim."1Corinthians2:9AsalsoGodsaid
toAbraham,that"hecouldnotnumberthestars"Genesis15:5andthatpassage,"Whocan
numberthesandofthesea,andthedropsofrainy"Sirach1:2Howshallanyonebeableto
investigatetoocuriouslythesubsistenceofthedivineWord,unlesshebesmittenwithfrenzy?
ConcerningwhichtheSpiritofprophecysays,"Whoshalldeclarehisgeneration?"Isaiah53:8And
ourSaviourHimself,whoblessesthepillarsofallthingsintheworld,soughttounburdenthemof
theknowledgeofthesethings,sayingthattocomprehendthiswasquitebeyondtheirnature,and
thattotheFatheralonebelongedtheknowledgeofthismostdivinemystery."Fornoman,"says
He,"knowstheSon,buttheFather:neitherknowsanymantheFather,savetheSon."Matthew
11:27OfthisthingalsoIthinkthattheFatherspoke,inthewords,"MysecretistoMeandMine."

6.NowthatitisaninsanethingtothinkthattheSonwasmadefromthingswhicharenot,andwas
inbeingintime,theexpression,"fromthingswhicharenot,"itselfshows,althoughthesestupid
menunderstandnottheinsanityoftheirownwords.Fortheexpression,"wasnot,"oughteitherto
bereckonedintime,orinsomeplaceofanage.Butifitbetruethat"allthingsweremadeby
Him,"itisestablishedthatbotheveryageandtimeandallspace,andthat"when"inwhich
the"wasnot"isfound,wasmadebyHim.AndisitnotabsurdthatHewhofashionedthetimesand
theagesandtheseasons,inwhichthat"wasnot"ismixedup,tosayofHim,thatHeatsometime
wasnot?Foritisdevoidofsense,andamarkofgreatignorance,toaffirmthatHewhois
thecauseofeverythingisposteriortotheoriginofthatthing.Foraccordingtothem,thespaceof
timeinwhichtheysaythattheSonhadnotyetbeenmadebytheFather,precededthewisdomof
Godthatfashionedallthings,andtheScripturespeaksfalselyaccordingtothem,whichcalls
Him"theFirstbornofeverycreature."Conformabletowhich,thatwhichthemajestically
speakingPaulsaysofHim:"WhomHehasappointedheirofallthings.BywhomalsoHemadethe
worlds.ButbyHimalsowereallthingscreatedthatareinheaven,andthatareinearth,visibleand
invisible,whethertheybethronesordominions,orprincipalities,orpowersallthingswere
createdbyHim,andforHimandHeisbeforeallthings."Colossians1:1617

7.Wherefore,sinceitappearsthatthishypothesisofacreationfromthingswhicharenotismost
impious,itisnecessarytosaythattheFatherisalwaystheFather.ButHeistheFather,sincethe
SonisalwayswithHim,onaccountofwhomHeiscalledtheFather.Wherefore,sincetheSonis
alwayswithHim,theFatherisalwaysperfect,beingdestituteofnothingasregardsgoodwho,not
intime,norafteraninterval,norfromthingswhicharenot,hasbegottenHisonlybegottenSon.
How,then,isitnotimpioustosay,thatthewisdomofGodoncewasnotwhichspeaksthus
concerningitself:"IwaswithHimformingallthingsIwasHisdelight"orthatthepowerofGod
oncedidnotexistorthatHisWordwasatanytimemutilatedorthatotherthingswereever
wantingfromwhichtheSonisknownandtheFatherexpressed?Forhewhodeniesthatthe
brightnessofthegloryexisted,takesawayalsotheprimitivelightofwhichitsthebrightness.And
iftheimageofGodwasnotalways,itisclearalsothatHewasnotalways,ofwhichitistheimage.
Moreover,insayingthatthecharacterofthesubsistenceofGodwasnot,Healsoisdoneawaywith
whoisperfectlyexpressedbyit.HenceonemayseethattheSonshipofourSaviourhasnothingat
allincommonwiththesonshipoftherest.ForjustasithasbeenshownthatHisinexplicable
subsistenceexcelsbyanincomparableexcellenceallotherthingstowhichHehasgivenexistence,
soalsoHisSonship,whichisaccordingtothenatureoftheGodheadoftheFather,transcends.by
anineffableexcellence.thesonshipofthosewhohavebeenadoptedbyHim.ForHe,indeed,isof
animmutablenature,everywayperfect,andwantinginnothingbutthesesincetheyareeither
waysubjecttochange,standinneedofhelpfromHim.ForwhatprogresscanthewisdomofGod
make?WhatincreasecanthetruthitselfandGodtheWordreceive?Inwhatrespectcanthelifeand
thetruelightbemadebetter?Andifthisbeso,howmuchmoreunnaturalisitthatwisdomshould
everbecapableoffollythatthepowerofGodshouldbeconjoinedwithinfirmitythatreason
shouldbeobscuredbyunreasonorthatdarknessshouldbemixedupwiththetruelight?Andthe
apostlesays,onthisplace,"Whatcommunionhaslightwithdarkness?Andwhatconcordhas
ChristwithBelial?"2Corinthians6:1415AndSolomonsays,thatitisnotpossiblethatitshould
cometopassthatamanshouldcomprehendwithhisunderstanding"thewayofaserpentupona
rock,"whichisChrist,accordingtotheopinionofPaul.Butmenandangels,whoareHiscreatures,
havereceivedHisblessingthattheymightmakeprogress,exercisingthemselvesinvirtuesandin
thecommandmentsofthelaw,soasnottosin.WhereforeourLord,sinceHeisbynaturetheSon
oftheFather,isbyalladored.Butthese,layingasidethespiritofbondage,whenby
bravedeedsandbyprogresstheyhavereceivedthespiritofadoption,beingblessedbyHimwhois
theSonbynature,aremadesonsbyadoption.

8.AndHisproperandpeculiar,naturalandexcellentSonship,St.Paulhasdeclared,whothus
speaksofGod:"WhosparednotHisownSon,butforus,"whowerenotHisnaturalsons,"delivered
Himup."Romans8:32FortodistinguishHimfromthosewhoarenotproperlysons,Hesaidthat
HewasHisownSon.AndintheGospelweread:"ThisisMybelovedSon,inwhomIamwell
pleased."Matthew3:17Moreover,inthePsalmstheSavioursays:"TheLordhassaiduntoMe,You
aremySon."Where,showingthatHeisthetrueandgenuineSon,Hesignifiesthatthereareno
othergenuinesonsbesidesHimself.Andwhat,too,isthemeaningofthis:"Fromthewombbefore
themorningIbegotyou"?DoesHenotplainlyindicatethenaturalsonshipofpaternalbringing
forth,whichheobtainednotbythecarefulframingofHismanners,notbytheexerciseofand
increaseinvirtue,butbypropertyofnature?Wherefore,theonlybegottenSonoftheFather,
indeed,possessesanindefectibleSonshipbuttheadoptionofrationalsonsbelongsnottothemby
nature,butispreparedforthembytheprobityoftheirlife,andbythefreegiftofGod.Anditis
mutableastheScripturerecognises:"ForwhenthesonsofGodsawthedaughtersofmen,theytook
themwives,"Genesis6:2etc.Andinanotherplace:"Ihavenourishedandbroughtupchildren,but
theyhaverebelledagainstMe,"Isaiah1:2aswefindGodspeakingbytheprophetIsaiah.

9.AndthoughIcouldsaymuchmore,brethrenbeloved,Ipurposelyomittodoso,asdeemingitto
beburdensomeatgreatlengthtocallthesethingstotheremembranceofteacherswhoareofthe
samemindwithmyself.ForyouyourselvesaretaughtofGod,norareyouignorantthatthis
doctrine,whichhaslatelyraiseditsheadagainstthepietyoftheChurch,isthatofEbionand
ArtemasnorisitanythingelsebutanimitationofPaulofSamosata,bishopofAntioch,who,bythe
judgmentandcounselofallthebishops,andineveryplace,wasseparatedfromtheChurch.To
whomLuciansucceeding,remainedformanyyearsseparatefromthecommunionofthreebishops.
Andnowlatelyhavingdrainedthedregsoftheirimpiety,therehavearisenamongusthosewho
teachthisdoctrineofacreationfromthingswhicharenot,theirhiddensprouts,AriusandAchilles,
andthegatheringofthosewhojoinintheirwickedness.AndthreebishopsinSyria,havingbeen,in
somemanner,consecratedonaccountoftheiragreementwiththem,incitethemtoworsethings.
Butletthejudgmentconcerningthesebereservedforyourtrial.Forthey,retainingintheir
memorythewordswhichcametobeusedwithrespecttoHissavingPassion,andabasement,and
examination,andwhattheycallHispoverty,andinshortofallthosethingstowhichtheSaviour
submittedforoursakes,bringthemforwardtorefuteHissupremeandeternalGodhead.Butof
thosewordswhichsignifyHisnaturalgloryandnobility,andabidingwiththeFather,theyhave
becomeunmindful.Suchasthis:"IandMyFatherareone,"John10:30whichindeedtheLord
says,notasproclaimingHimselftobetheFather,nortodemonstratethattwopersonsareonebut
thattheSonoftheFathermostexactlypreservestheexpressedlikenessoftheFather,inasmuchas
HehasbynatureimpresseduponHimHissimilitudeineveryrespect,andistheimageofthe
Fatherinnowaydiscrepant,andtheexpressedfigureoftheprimitiveexemplar.Whence,also,to
Philip,whothenwasdesiroustoseeHim,theLordshowsthisabundantly.Forwhenhe
said,"ShowustheFather,"John14:89Heanswered:"HethathasseenMe,hasseen
theFather,"sincetheFatherwasHimselfseenthroughthespotlessandlivingmirrorofthedivine
image.SimilartowhichiswhatthesaintssayinthePsalms:"InYourlightshallwesee
light."WhereforehethathonourstheSon,honourstheFatheralsoandwithreason,forevery
impiouswordwhichtheydaretospeakagainsttheSon,hasreferencetotheFather.

10.Butafterthesethings,brethrenbeloved,whatistherewonderfulinthatwhichIamaboutto
write,ifIshallsetforththefalsecalumniesagainstmeandourmostpiouslaity?Forthosewho
havesetthemselvesinarrayagainsttheGodheadofChrist,donotscrupletouttertheirungrateful
ravingsagainstas.Whowillnoteitherthatanyoftheancientsshouldbecomparedwiththem,or
sufferthatanyofthosewhom,fromourearliestyears,wehaveusedasinstructorsshouldbeplaced
onalevelwiththem.Nay,andtheydonotthinkthatanyofallthosewhoarenowourcolleagues,
hasattainedeventoamoderateamountofwisdomboastingthemselvestobetheonlymenwho
arewiseanddivestedofworldlypossessions,thesolediscoverersofdogmas,andthattothem
alonearethosethingsrevealedwhichhaveneverbeforecomeintothemindofanyotherunderthe
sun.Oh,theimpiousarrogance!Oh,theimmeasurablemadness!Oh,thevainglorybefittingthose
thatarecrazed!Oh,theprideofSatanwhichhastakenrootintheirunholysouls.Thereligious
perspicuityoftheancientScripturescausedthemnoshame,nordidtheconsentientdoctrineofour
colleaguesconcerningChristkeepinchecktheiraudacityagainstHim.Theirimpietynoteven
thedemonswillbear,whoareeveronthewatchforablasphemouswordutteredagainsttheSon.

11.Andletthesethingsbenowurgedaccordingtoourpoweragainstthosewho,withrespectto
matterwhichtheyknownothingof,have,asitwere,rolledinthedustagainstChrist,andhavetaken
inhandtocalumniateourpietytowardsHim.Forthoseinventorsofstupidfablessay,thatwewho
turnawaywithaversionfromtheimpiousandunscripturalblasphemyagainstChrist,ofthosewho
speakofHiscomingfromthethingswhicharenotassert,thattherearetwounbegottens.For
theyignorantlyaffirmthatoneoftwothingsmustnecessarilybesaid,eitherthatHeisfromthings
whicharenot,orthattherearetwounbegottensnordothoseignorantmenknowhowgreatisthe
differencebetweentheunbegottenFather,andthethingswhichwerebyHimcreatedfromthings
whicharenot,aswelltherationalastheirrational.Betweenwhichtwo,asholdingthemiddle
place,theonlybegottennatureofGod,theWordbywhichtheFatherformedallthingsoutof
nothing,wasbegottenofthetrueFatherHimself.AsinacertainplacetheLordHimselftestified,
saying,"EveryonethatlovesHimthatbegot,lovesHimalsothatisbegottenofHim."John5:1

12.Concerningwhomwethusbelieve,evenastheApostolicChurchbelieves.InoneFather
unbegotten,whohasfromnoonethecauseofHisbeing,whoisunchangeableandimmutable,who
isalwaysthesame,andadmitsofnoincreaseordiminutionwhogavetoustheLaw,theprophets,
andtheGospelswhoisLordofthepatriarchsandapostles,andallthesaints.AndinoneLord
JesusChrist,theonlybegottenSonofGodnotbegottenofthingswhicharenot,butofHimwhois
theFathernotinacorporealmanner,byexcisionordivisionasSabelliusandValentinusthought,
butinacertaininexplicableandunspeakablemanner,accordingtothewordsoftheprophetcited
above:"WhoshalldeclareHisgeneration?"Isaiah53:8SincethatHissubsistencenonaturewhich
isbegottencaninvestigate,evenastheFathercanbeinvestigatedbynonebecausethat
thenatureofrationalbeingscannotreceivetheknowledgeofHisdivinegenerationbytheFather.
ButmenwhoaremovedbytheSpiritoftruth,havenoneedtolearnthesethingsfromme,forin
ourearsaresoundingthewordsbeforeutteredbyChristonthisverything,No
manknowstheFather,savetheSonandnomanknowswhotheSonis,savetheFather.Matthew
11:27ThatHeisequallywiththeFatherunchangeableandimmutable,wantinginnothing,andthe
perfectSon,andliketotheFather,wehavelearnedinthisaloneisHeinferiortotheFather,that
Heisnotunbegotten.ForHeistheveryexactimageoftheFather,andinnothingdifferingfrom
Him.ForitisclearthatHeistheimagefullycontainingallthingsbywhichthegreatestsimilitude
isdeclared,astheLordHimselfhastaughtus,whenHesays,"MyFatherisgreaterthanI."John
14:28AndaccordingtothiswebelievethattheSonisoftheFather,alwaysexisting."ForHeisthe
brightnessofHisglory,theexpressimageofHisFather'sperson."Hebrews1:3Butletnoonetake
thatwordalwayssoastoraisesuspicionthatHeisunbegotten,astheyimaginewhohavetheir
sensesblinded.Forneitherarethewords,"Hewas,"or"always,"or"beforeallworlds,"equivalent
tounbegotten.Butneithercanthehumanmindemployanyotherwordtosignifyunbegotten.And
thusIthinkthatyouunderstandit,andItrusttoyourrightpurposeinallthings,sincethesewords
donotatallsignifyunbegotten.Forthesewordsseemtodenotesimplyalengtheningoutoftime,
buttheGodhead,andasitweretheantiquityoftheonlybegotten,theycannotworthilysignifybut
theyhavebeenemployedbyholymen,whileeach,accordingtohiscapacity,seekstoexpress
thismystery,askingindulgencefromthehearers,andpleadingareasonableexcuse,insaying,Thus
farhaveweattained.Butiftherebeanywhoareexpectingfrommortallipssomewordwhich
exceedshumancapacity,sayingthatthosethingshavebeendoneawaywhichareknowninpart,it

confesstooneHolySpirit,asthedivineScripturesteachuswhohasinauguratedboth
theholymenoftheOldTestament,andthedivineteachersofthatwhichiscalledtheNew.And
besides,also,oneonlyCatholicandApostolicChurch,whichcanneverbedestroyed,thoughallthe
worldshouldseektomakewarwithitbutitisvictoriousovereverymostimpiousrevoltof
thehereticswhoriseupagainstit.ForherGoodmanhasconfirmedourmindsbysaying,"Beof
goodcheer,Ihaveovercometheworld."John16:33Afterthisweknowoftheresurrectionofthe
dead,thefirstfruitsofwhichwasourLordJesusChrist,whoinverydeed,andnotinappearance
merely,carriedabody,ofMaryMotherofGod,whointheendoftheworldcametothehuman
racetoputawaysin,wascrucifiedanddied,andyetdidHenotthusperceiveanydetrimenttoHis
divinity,beingraisedfromthedead,takenupintoheaven,seatedattherighthandofmajesty.

13.ThesethingsinparthaveIwritteninthisepistle,thinkingitburdensometowriteouteach
accurately,evenasIsaidbefore,becausetheyescapenotyourreligiousdiligence.Thusdowe
teach,thusdowepreach.ThesearetheapostolicdoctrinesoftheChurch,forwhichalsowedie,
esteemingthosebutlittlewhowouldcompelustoforswearthem,eveniftheywouldforceusby
tortures,andnotcastingawayourhopeinthem.TotheseAriusandAchillesopposingthemselves,
andthosewhowiththemaretheenemiesofthetruth,havebeenexpelledfromtheChurch,as

nottothewholesomewordsofourLordJesusChrist,andtothedoctrinewhichisaccordingto
godlinessheisproud,knowingnothing,"1Timothy6:34andsoforth.These,therefore,whohave
beenanathematizedbythebrotherhood,letnooneofyoureceive,noradmitofthosethingswhich
areeithersaidorwrittenbythem.Fortheseseducersdoalwayslie,norwilltheyeverspeak
thetruth.Theygoaboutthecities,attemptingnothingelsebutthatunderthemarkoffriendship
andthenameofpeace,bytheirhypocrisyandblandishments,theymaygiveandreceiveletters,to
deceivebymeansoftheseafew"sillywomen,andladenwithsins,whohavebeenledcaptiveby
them,"2Timothy3:4andsoforth.

deridedtheChristianreligionpartlyseektotraduceandinformagainstitsprofessorsbeforethe

theotherneighbouringprovinces.AftertheexampleofwhichItrustalsothatIshallreceiveletters
fromyou.ForthoughIhavepreparedmanyhelpstowardscuringthosewhohavesufferedinjury,
thisisthespecialremedythathasbeendevisedforhealingthemultitudesthathavebeendeceived
bythem,thattheymaycomplywiththegeneralconsentofourcolleagues,andthushastento
returntorepentance.Saluteoneanother,togetherwiththebrethrenwhoarewithyou.Ipraythat
youmaybestrongintheLord,beloved,andthatImayprofitbyyourlovetowardsChrist.

1.SincethebodyoftheCatholicChurchisone,anditiscommandedinHolyScripturethatwe
shouldkeepthebondofunanimityandpeace,itfollowsthatweshouldwriteandsignifytoone
anotherthethingswhicharedonebyeachofusthatwhetheronemembersufferorrejoicewemay
alleithersufferorrejoicewithoneanother.Inourdiocese,then,notsolongago,therehavegone
forthlawlessmen,andadversariesofChrist,teachingmentoapostatizewhichthing,withgood
right,onemightsuspectandcalltheprecursorofAntichrist.Iindeedwishedtocoverthematterup
insilence,thatsoperhapstheevilmightspenditselfintheleadersoftheheresyalone,andthatit
mightnotspreadtootherplacesanddefiletheearsofanyofthemoresimpleminded.Butsince
Eusebius,thepresentbishopofNicomedia,imaginingthatwithhimrestallecclesiasticalmatters,
because,havingleftBerytusandcasthiseyesuponthechurchoftheNicomedians,andno
punishmenthasbeeninflicteduponhim,heissetovertheseapostates,andhasundertakento
writeeverywhere,commendingthem,ifbyanymeanshemaydrawasidesomewhoareignorantto
thismostdisgracefulandAntchristianheresyitbecamenecessaryforme,asknowingwhatis
writteninthelaw,nolongertoremainsilent,buttoannouncetoyouall,thatyoumayknowboth
thosewhohavebecomeapostates,andalsothewretchedwordsoftheirheresyandifEusebius
write,nottogiveheedtohim.

2.Forhe,desiringbytheirassistancetorenewthatancientwickednessofhismind,withrespectto
whichhehasforatimebeensilent,pretendsthatheiswritingintheirbehalf,butheprovesbyhis
deedthatheisexertinghimselftodothisonhisownaccount.Nowtheapostatesfrom
theChurcharethese:Arius,Achilles,Aithales,Carpones,theotherArius,Sarmates,whowere
formerlypriestsEuzoius,Lucius,Julius,Menas,Helladius,andGains,formerlydeaconsandwith
themSecundusandTheonas,whowereoncecalledbishops.Andthewordsinventedbythem,and
spokencontrarytothemindofScripture,areasfollows:

"GodwasnotalwaystheFatherbuttherewasatimewhenGodwasnottheFather.TheWordof
Godwasnotalways,butwasmade'fromthingsthatarenot'forHewhoisGodfashionedthenon
existingfromthenonexistingwhereforetherewasatimewhenHewasnot.FortheSonisathing
created,andathingmade:norisHeliketotheFatherinsubstancenorisHethetrueandnatural
WordoftheFathernorisHeHistrueWisdombutHeisoneofthethingsfashionedandmade.
AndHeiscalled,byamisapplicationoftheterms,theWordandWisdom,sinceHeisHimself
madebytheproperWordofGod,andbythatwisdomwhichisinGod,inwhich,asGodmadeall
otherthings,soalsodidHemakeHim.Wherefore,IHeisbyHisverynaturechangeableand
mutable,equallywithotherrationalbeings.TheWord,too,isalienandseparatefromthe
substanceofGod.ThefatheralsoisineffabletotheSonforneitherdoestheWordperfectlyand
accuratelyknowtheFather,neithercanHeperfectlyseeHim.ForneitherdoestheSon
indeedknowHisownsubstanceasitis.SinceHeforoursakeswasmade,thatbyHimasbyan
instrumentGodmightcreateusnorwouldHehaveexistedhadnotGodwishedtomakeus.Some
oneaskedofthemwhethertheSonofGodcouldchangeevenasthedevilchangedandtheyfeared
nottoanswerthatHecanforsinceHewasmadeandcreated,Heisofmutablenature."

withtheBishopsofEgyptandtheLibyas,nearlyahundredinnumber,haveanathematizedthem,

unliketothesubstanceoftheFather,whoistheperfectimageandbrightnessoftheFather,and
whosays,"HethathasseenMehasseentheFather?"John14:9Andhow,iftheSonistheWordor
WisdomandReasonofGod,wasthereatimewhenHewasnot?Itisalloneasiftheysaid,that
therewasatimewhenGodwaswithoutreasonandwisdom.How,also,canHebechangeableand
mutable,whosaysindeedbyHimself:"IamintheFather,andtheFatherinMe,"John
14:10and,"IandMyFatherareone"John10:30andbytheprophet,"IamtheLord,Ichange
not?"Malachi3:6ForeventhoughonesayingmayrefertotheFatherHimself,yetitwouldnowbe
moreaptlyspokenoftheWord,becausewhenHebecameman,Hechangednotbut,assaysthe
apostle,"JesusChrist,thesameyesterday,today,andforever."Hebrews13:8Whohasinduced
themtosay,thatforoursakesHewasmadealthoughPaulsays,"forwhomareallthings,andby
whomareallthings?"Hebrews11:10

4.NowconcerningtheirblasphemousassertionwhosaythattheSondoesnot
perfectlyknowtheFather,weneednotwonder:forhavingoncepurposedintheirmindto
wagewaragainstChrist,theyimpugnalsothesewordsofHis,"AstheFatherknowsMe,even
soknowItheFather."John10:15Wherefore,iftheFatheronlyinpartknowstheSon,thenitis
evidentthattheSondoesnotperfectlyknowtheFather.Butifitbewickedthustospeak,andifthe
FatherperfectlyknowstheSon,itisplainthat,evenastheFatherknowsHisownWord,soalsothe
WordknowsHisownFather,ofwhomHeistheWord.

5.Bysayingthesethings,andbyunfoldingthedivineScriptures,wehaveoftenrefutedthem.But
they,chameleonlike,changingtheirsentiments,endeavourtoclaimforthemselvesthat
saying:"Whenthewickedcomes,thencomescontempt."Proverbs18:3Beforethem,indeed,
manyheresiesexisted,which,havingdaredmorethanwasright,havefallenintomadness.But
thesebyalltheirwordshaveattemptedtodoawaywiththeGodheadofChrist,havemadethose
seemrighteous,sincetheyhavecomenearertoAntichrist.Whereforetheyhave
beenexcommunicatedandanathematizedbytheChurch.Andindeed,althoughwegrieveatthe
destructionofthesemen,especiallythatafterhavingoncelearnedthedoctrineoftheChurch,they
havenowgonebackyetwedonotwonderatitforthisverythingHymenaeusandPhiletus
suffered,2Timothy2:17andbeforethemJudas,who,thoughhefollowedtheSaviour,afterwards

unbelief.Twoverybadthingsareillwillandunbelief,bothofwhicharecontrarytorighteousness

tosweetness,darknesstolight,eviltogood,deathtolife,falsehoodtotruth.Those,therefore,who
aboundinthesevicesthatarerepugnanttovirtue,areinamannerdeadforthemalignantandthe

2.Sincethereforeyouknow,brethrenbeloved,thatthemalignantandtheunbelievingarethe
enemiesofrighteousness,bewareofthese,embracefaithandcharity,bywhichalltheholymen
whohaveexistedfromthebeginningoftheworldtothisdayhaveattaineduntosalvation.And
showforththefruitofcharity,notinwordsonly,butalsoindeeds,thatis,inallgodlypatiencefor

ForitwasnotenoughforGodtosay,"Letusmakemaninourimage,afterourlikeness,"Genesis
1:26butdeedfollowedwordfor,takingthedustfromtheground,Heformedmanoutofit,
conformabletoHisimageandsimilitude,andintohimHebreathedthebreathoflife,so
thatAdambecamealivingsoul.

3.Butwhenmanafterwardsbyhisfallhadinclinedtodeath,itwasnecessarythatthatformshould
berecreatedanewtosalvationbythesameArtificer.Fortheformindeedlayrottingintheground
butthatinspirationwhichhadbeenasthebreathoflife,wasdetainedseparatefromthebodyina
darkplace,whichiscalledHades.Therewas,therefore,adivisionofthesoulfromthebodyitwas
banishedadinferos,whilethelatterwasresolvedintodustandtherewasagreatintervalof
separationbetweenthemforthebody,bythedissolutionoftheflesh,becomescorrupt
thesoulbeingloosenedfromit,itsactionceases.Foraswhenthekingisthrownintochains,the
cityfallstoruinoraswhenthegeneralistakencaptive,thearmyisscatteredabroadoraswhen
thehelmsmanisshakenoff,thevesselissubmergedsowhenthesoulisboundinchains,itsbody
goestopiecesasthecitywithoutitsking,soitsmembersaredissolvedasisthecasewithanarmy
whenitsgeneralislost,theyaredrownedindeath,evenashappenstoavesselwhendeprivedofits
helmsman.Thesoul,therefore,governedtheman,aslongasthebodysurvivedevenastheking
governsthecity,thegeneralthearmy,thehelmsmantheship.Butitwaspowerlesstoruleit,from
thetimewhenitwasimmoveablytiedtoit,andbecameimmersedinerrorthereforeitwasthatit
declinedfromthestraightpath,andfollowedtempters,givingheedtofornication,idolatry,and
sheddingofbloodbywhichevildeedsithasdestroyedthepropermanhood.Nay,butitselfalso
beingcarriedatlengthtothelowerregions,itwastheredetainedbythewickedtempter.Elsewasit
wont,asthekingrestorestheruinedcity,thegeneralcollectsthedispersedarmy,thesailorrepairs
thebrokenship,evenso,Isay,thesoulusedtoministersuppliestothebodybeforethatthebody
wasdissolvedinthedust,beingnotasyetitselfboundfastwithfetters.Butafterthat
thesoulbecamebound,notwithmaterialfettersbutwithsins,andthuswasrenderedimpotentto
act,thenitleftitsbodyintheground,andbeingcastdowntothelowerregions,itwasmadethe
footstoolofdeath,anddespicabletoall.

4.Manwentforthfromparadisetoaregionwhichwasthesinkofunrighteousness,
fornication,adultery,andcruelmurder.Andtherehefoundhisdestructionforallthingsconspired
tohisdeath,andworkedtheruinofhimwhohadhardlyenteredthere.Meanwhilemanwanted
someconsolationandassistanceandrest.Forwhenwasitwellwithman?Inhismother'swomb?
Butwhenhewasshutupthere,hedifferedbutlittlefromthedead.Whenhewasnourishedwith
milkfromthebreast?Noteventhen,indeed,didhefeelanyjoy.Wasitratherwhilehewascoming
tomaturity?Butthen,especially,danger'simpendedoverhimfromhisyouthfullusts.Wasit,
lastly,whenhegrewold?Nay,butthendoeshebegintogroan,beingpresseddownbytheweight
ofoldage,andtheexpectationofdeath.Forwhatelseisoldagebuttheexpectationofdeath?
Verilyalltheinhabitantsofearthdodie,youngmenandold,littlechildrenandadults,fornoage
orbodilystatureisexemptfromdeath.Why,then,ismantormentedbythisexceedinggrief?
Doubtlesstheveryaspectofdeathbegetssadnessforwebeholdinadeadmanthefacechanged,
thefiguredead,thebodyshrunkupwithemaciation,themouthsilent,theskincold,thecarcass
prostrateontheground,theeyessunken,thelimbsimmoveable,thefleshwastedaway,theveins
congealed,theboneswhitened,thejointsdissolved,allpartsofhimreducedtodust,andtheman
nolongerexisting.What,then,isman?Aflower,Isay,thatisbutforalittletime,whichinhis

ForelsewhyshouldChristhavedied?HadHecommittedanythingworthyofdeath?WhydidHe
clotheHimselfinfleshwhowasinvestedwithglory?AndsinceHewasGod,whydidHebecome
man?AndsinceHereignedinheaven,whydidHecomedowntoearth,andbecomeincarnatein
thevirgin'swomb?Whatnecessity,Iask,impelledGodtocomedowntoearth,toassumeflesh,to
bewrappedinswaddlingclothesinamangercradle,tobenourishedwiththemilkfromthebreast,
toreceivebaptismfromaservant,tobeliftedupuponthecross,tobeinterredinanearthly
sepulchre,toriseagainthethirddayfromthedead?Whatnecessity,Isay,impelledHimtothis?It
issufficientlydiscoveredthatHesufferedshameforman'ssake,tosethimfreefromdeathand
thatHeexclaimed,asinthewordsoftheprophet,"Ihaveenduredasatravailingwoman."Isaiah
42:14InverydeeddidHeendureforoursakessorrow,ignominy,torment,evendeathitself,and

Himthustogodown?Theimpiouspeople.Behold,yousonsofmen,beholdwhat
recompenseIsraelmadeuntoHim!SheslewherBenefactor,returningevilforgood,affliction
forjoy,deathforlife.TheyslewbynailingtothetreeHimwhohadbroughttolifetheirdead,had
healedtheirmaimed,hadmadetheirlepersclean,hadgivenlighttotheirblind.Behold,yousons
ofmen!Behold,allyoupeople,thesenewwonders!TheysuspendedHimonthetree,whostretches
outtheearththeytransfixedHimwithnailswholaidfirmthefoundationoftheworldthey
circumscribedHimwhocircumscribedtheheavenstheyboundHimwhoabsolvessinnersthey
gaveHimvinegartodrinkwhohasmadethemtodrinkofrighteousnesstheyfedHimwithgall
whohasofferedtothemtheBreadofLifetheycausedcorruptiontocomeuponHishands,and
feetwhohealedtheirhandsandfeettheyviolentlyclosedHiseyeswhorestoredsighttothem
theygaveHimovertothetomb,whoraisedtheirdeadtolifebothinthetimebeforeHisPassion
andalsowhileHewashangingonthetree.

6.ForwhenourLordwassufferinguponthecross,thetombswereburstopen,theinfernalregion
wasdisclosed,thesoulsleaptforth,thedeadreturnedtolife,andmanyofthemwereseenin
Jerusalem,whilethemysteryofthecrosswasbeingperfectedwhattimeourLordtrampledupon
death,dissolvedtheenmity,boundthestrongman,andraisedthetrophyofthecross,Hisbody
beingliftedupuponit,thatthebodymightappearonhigh,anddeathtobedepressedunderthe
footofflesh.Thentheheavenlypowerswondered,theangelswereastonished,theelements
trembled,everycreaturewasshakenwhiletheylookedonthisnewmystery,andtheterrific
spectaclewhichwasbeingenactedintheuniverse.Yettheentirepeople,asunconsciousof
themystery,exultedoverChristinderisionalthoughtheearthwasrocking,themountains,the
valleys,andtheseawereshaken,andeverycreatureofGodwassmittenwithconfusion.Thelights
ofheavenwereafraid,thesunfledaway,themoondisappeared,thestarswithdrewtheirshining,
thedaycametoendtheangelinastonishmentdepartedfromthetempleaftertherendingofthe
veil,anddarknesscoveredtheearthonwhichitsLordhadclosedHiseyes.Meanwhilehellwas
withlightresplendent,fortherehadthestardescended.TheLord,indeed,didnotdescend
intohellinHisbodybutinHisSpirit.Heforsoothisworkingeverywhere,forwhileHeraisedthe
deadbyHisbody,byHisspiritwasHeliberatingtheirsouls.ForwhenthebodyoftheLordwas
hunguponthecross,thetombs,aswehavesaid,wereopenedhellwasunbarred.thedead
receivedtheirlife,thesoulsweresentbackagainintotheworld,andthatbecausetheLordhad
conqueredhell,hadtroddendowndeath,hadcoveredtheenemywithshamethereforewasitthat
thesoulscameforthfromHades,andthedeadappearedupontheearth.

7.Yousee,therefore,howgreatwastheeffectofthedeathofChrist,fornocreatureenduredHis
fallwithequalmind,nordidtheelementsHisPassion,neitherdidtheearthretainHisbody,
norhellHisSpirit.AllthingswereinthePassionofChristdisturbedandconvulsed.TheLord
exclaimed,asoncebeforetoLazarus,Comeforth,youdead,fromyourtombsandyoursecret
placesforI,theChrist,giveuntoyouresurrection.Forthentheearthcouldnotlongholdthebody
ofourLordthatinitwasburiedbutitexclaimed,OmyLord,pardonmineiniquities,saveme
fromYourwrath,absolvemefromthecurse,forIhavereceivedthebloodoftherighteous,andyet
IhavenotcoveredthebodiesofmenorYourownbody!Whatisatlengththiswonderfulmystery?
Why,OLord,didYoucomedowntoearth,unlessitwasforman'ssake,whohasbeenscattered
everywhere:forineveryplacehasYour,fairimagebeendisseminated?Nay!Butifyoushouldgive
butonelittleword,attheinstantallbodieswouldstandbeforeYou.Now,sinceYouhavecometo
earth,andhavesoughtforthemembersofYourfashioning,undertakeformanwhoisYourown,
receivethatwhichiscommittedtoYou,recoverYourimage,YourAdam.ThentheLord,thethird
dayafterHisdeath,roseagain,thusbringingmantoaknowledgeoftheTrinity.Thenallthe
nationsofthehumanraceweresavedbyChrist.Onesubmittedtothejudgment,andmany
thousandswereabsolved.Moreover,HebeingmadeliketomanwhomHehadsaved,ascendedto
theheightofheaven,toofferbeforeHisFather,notgoldorsilver,orpreciousstones,buttheman
whomHehadformedafterHisownimageandsimilitudeandtheFather,raisingHimtoHisright
hand,hasseatedHimuponathroneonhigh,andhasmadeHimtobejudgeofthepeoples,the
leaderoftheangelichost,thecharioteerofthecherubim,theSonofthetrueJerusalem,theVirgin's

toundergodeathfordeath?ForChrist,bydying,hasdischargedthedebtofdeathtowhichman
wasobnoxious.Oh,thenewandineffablemystery!TheJudgewasjudged.Hewhoabsolves
fromsinwasboundHewasmockedwhoonceframedtheworldHewasstretcheduponthecross
whostretchedouttheheavensHewasfedwithgallwhogavethemannatobebreadHediedwho
giveslife.Hewasgivenuptothetombwhoraisesthedead.Thepowerswereastonished,
theangelswondered,theelementstrembled,thewholecreateduniversewasshaken,theearth
quaked,anditsfoundationsrockedthesunfledaway,theelementsweresubverted,thelightof
dayrecededbecausetheycouldnotbeartolookupontheircrucifiedLord.Thecreature,in
amazement,said,Whatisthisnovelmystery?Thejudgeisjudgedandissilenttheinvisibleisseen
andisnotconfoundedtheincomprehensibleisgraspedandisnotindignantatitthe
immeasurableiscontainedinameasureandmakesnooppositiontheimpassablesuffersanddoes
notavengeitsowninjurytheimmortaldiesandcomplainsnotthecelestialisburiedandbearsit
withanequalmind.What,Isay,isthismystery?Thecreaturesurelyistransfixedwithamazement.
ButwhenourLordrosefromdeathandtrampleditdown,whenHeboundthestrongmanandset
manfree,theneverycreaturewonderedattheJudgewhoforAdam'ssakewasjudged,atthe
invisiblebeingseen,attheimpassablesuffering,attheimmortaldead,atthecelestialburiedinthe
earth.ForourLordwasmademanHewascondemnedthatHemightimpartcompassionHewas
boundthatHemightsetfreeHewasapprehendedthatHemightliberateHesufferedthatHe
mighthealoursufferingsHediedtorestorelifetousHewasburiedtoraiseusup.Forwhenour
Lordsuffered,Hishumanitysuffered,thatwhichHehadlikemanandHedissolvesthesufferings
ofhimwhoisHislike,andbydyingHehasdestroyeddeath.ItwasforthiscausethatHecame
downuponearth,thatbypursuingdeathHemightkilltherebelthatslewmen.Foroneunderwent
thejudgment,andmyriadsweresetfreeonewasburied,andmyriadsroseagain.Heisthe
MediatorbetweenGodandmanHeistheresurrectionandthesalvationofallHeistheGuideof
theerring,theShepherdofmenwhohavebeensetfree,thelifeofthedead,thecharioteerof
thecherubim,thestandardbeareroftheangels,andtheKingofkings,towhombegloryforever
