(Handtai-yin) -lung meridian)

This manifests conditions along the pathway of the lung
meridian as well as lung-related problems.

Fever, chills, sweating, pain in the shoulder and back with a

cold sensation, pain in the supraclavicular fossa, lung
distension, coughing, panting, chest fullness and distention,
restlessness, scanty but frequent urination,
shortness of breath and feverish sensations on the palms and
soles.

since the lungs dominate the skin and skin hair, windcold may
obstruct wei yang (qi), causing fever and chills.
Wind has the property of opening the striate or pores, resulting
in sweating. Cold may impair the (lung)
meridian qi flow, leading to cold pain in the shoulder and
back as well as pain in the supraclavicular fossa.
Failure of lung qi to disperse and descend may cause lung
distension, coughing and panting.
Lung qi blockage may cause chest distension and fullness,
and restlessness.
Failure of the lungs to regulate water passage may cause
scanty frequent urination.
Lung qi deficiency causes shortness of breath. Lung yin
deficiency causes feverish sensations on the palms and soles.
2

(Handyangming) large intestine meridian)

This manifests conditions along the pathway of the large
intestine meridian as well as large-intestine-related problems.

Toothache, a sore throat, nosebleed, runny nose, swelling of the

neck, a dry mouth, pain on the anterior aspect of the shoulder
and anterior border of the extensor aspect of the upper limbs,
numbness, pain and impaired flexion and extension of the
thumbs and index fingers, abdominal pain, bowel sounds and
diarrhea or constipation.

Since, from the shoulder, a branch of the large intestine meridian

travels upward over the muscle at the side of the neck, passing
through the lower gums, and terminates beside the opposite
nostril, impaired flow of meridian qi may cause toothache, a
sore throat, nosebleed, a runny nose, swelling of the neck
and a dry mouth. Since the large intestine meridian begins at
the outside corner of the index fingernail, and runs along the
edge of the finger, between the two tendons of the thumb,
reaching the anterior side of the shoulder along the anterior
border of the lateral aspect of the arm, impaired flow of
meridian qi may cause pain on the anterior aspect of the
shoulder and the anterior border of the extensor aspect of
the upper limbs, numbness, and pain and impaired flexion
and extension of the thumb and index fingers.
Downward flow of dampheat to the large intestine may

cause abdominal pain and bowel sounds.

Dysfunction of the large intestine may cause diarrhea. Heat
consuming the liquid of the large intestine may cause
constipation.
(Footyangming) stomach meridian)
This manifests conditions along the pathway of the large
intestine meridian as well as large-intestine-related problems.

Fever, especially on the front part of the body, a swollen sore

throat, nosebleed, toothache, deviated mouth and eyes, pain
in the chest, abdomen and along the lateral aspects of the
lower limbs, pain on the dorsum of the feet, numbness and
impaired movement of the middle toes, gastric pain,
vomiting, fast hunger even with an increased appetite,
abdominal distension and fullness, edema, panic and mania.

The stomach meridian travels on the front part of the body,

exuberant qi may cause fever especially on that part of the body.
The stomach meridian starts beside the nose, and then passes
into the upper gums and around the mouth. From the jaw it
descends along the throat to the collarbone and passes through
the diaphragm. The superficial path continues down over the
abdomen to the pubic area, then continues down the anterior
thigh, passing just to the outside of the kneecap, and terminates
at the middle toe. Ascending of stomach fire along the pathway
4

of the meridian may cause a swollen sore throat, nosebleed

and toothache.
Wind attacking the meridian may cause deviated mouth and
eyes.
External pathogens affecting the flow of meridian qi may
cause pain on the chest, abdomen or along the lateral aspect
of the lower limbs, pain on the dorsum of the feet, and
numbness and impaired movement of the middle toes.
External pathogens attacking the stomach may cause gastric
pain. Adverse ascending of stomach qi may cause vomiting.
Exuberant stomach heat may cause a fast hunger even with
an increased appetite.
The stomach is internallyexternally connected with the spleen,
the spleen failing to transport and transform may cause
water retention and subsequent abdominal fullness and
distension and edema.
Stomach heat disturbing the heart may cause panic and
mania.
