CALIBRATION OF REM 500

Calibration to ANSI N323A-1997

For the 1000 mrem/h point, adjust the REM 500 to be within 5%.
For readings above 10 mrem/h the readings will be within +/- 20%.
From 0 to 10 mrem/h the reading will be within +/- 30%.

If the readings are within tolerance at the higher levels but out at the lower levels take more
measurements until the readings are in tolerance. This is particularly true at the 1 mrem/h levels.

Original or older version with 60 second time constant

Expose the instrument to 1000 mrem/h. Use the 60 sec time constant.

Write down at least 5 readings and see if they average out to the corrected mrem/h level. Adjust the
calibration factor until they are within 10%. Better would be 5%.

When the 1000 mrem/h average is correct, expose it for the integrate range.

For the remaining exposure rates, use the table below to determine the number of data points that are
averaged together to give you the reading. If the average is not close to the expected rate, try another
set of readings. This is particularly true on the 1 mrem/h exposure.

Exposure Rate Time Constant Setting Number of data

mrem/h points
1000 60 Sec 3
100 60 Sec 4
10 60 Sec 5
1 60 Sec 10
1 120 Sec (dont use) use 60 sec

New version with INF+ time constant

Set the instrument up with the INF+ time constant. The goal is to get at least the number of counts
shown in the table for each reading. If the average is not close to the expected rate, try another
reading. This is particularly true on the 1 mrem/h exposure.

Exposure Rate Time Constant Setting Counts Time

1000 INF+ 1000 3 Min
100 INF+ 500 3 min
10 INF+ 500 5 min
1 INF+ 100 10 min
New Version Quality Factor
The new version has the paper scale on the bottom of the display.

The new version must be set to QF19 for the calibration. We cannot do the calibration at QF60 since
we do not have the certifications on the source for QF60.

If the instrument arrives set to QF60, set it to QF19 for the calibration then reset it to QF60.

You can deternine which QF is being used when you turn on the instrument. If it is set to QF19 it will
show QF19 on the right top of the display after the version number.

If it is set to QF60 it will show QF60 on the right top of the display after the version number.

To change between QF19 and QF60 use the menu button. If the front panel QF button is turned off use
the internal default setting. This is one of the settings that you access by pushing the internal cal button
on the display circuit board, the front panel light button, and the power button.
