Foreword
I first of all offer my obeisances to all the Vaiavas
aspiring to serve our beloved Spiritual Master, O
Viupd rla Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswm
Mahrj. I then offer my obeisances at his lotus feet
holding in my heart the faith that he is Lord Nitynanda
Prabhus non-different manifestation mercifully
extending his shelter to the wayward souls of this world
such as my fallen self.
By the grace of r Nitynanda Prabhu, and the
inspiration of rla Govinda Mahrj, this years
Nitynanda Trayoda festival marks the inauguration of
the newly constructed r Hi Pait Padmvat-dev
Smti Kuja of the r Chaitanya Sraswata Knulana
Sagha in Brchandrapur, West Bengal, the divine
appearance place of Lord Nitynanda Prabhu.
At the request of the devotees organising the
festivities this English edition of the r r Nitynanda
Mahimmtam has been compiled for the satisfaction of
our Spiritual Master, the Vaiavas and all those who
aspire for the all-important mercy of Lord Nitynanda
Prabhu. Expanding upon the Mahs original publication
of the r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam in Bengali
I have collected an English representation of its original
contents plus a novel compilation of Lord Nitynanda
Prabhus divine glories as they have been expressed
by His Divine Grace rla Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-
Goswm Mahrj. Moreoever, in an effort to represent the
ontological method of understanding Lord Nitynanda
Prabhus transcendental identity and Pastimes as taught
by rla Bhakti Rakak rdhar Dev-Goswm Mahrj,
I have structured the compilation so as to draw attention
to a particular sequence of conceptualisation beginning
with spiritual revelation and culminating in loving
dispensation. To further this end, also included is a
summary study of the revealed Scriptures delineating
the essential truths about Lord Nitynanda Prabhu
according to the progression of thought stressed by rla
Bhakti Rakak rdhar Dev-Goswm Mahrj in his
rman Nitynanda Dvdaakam, and explained by rla
Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswm Mahrj. My hope
is that the attentive readers will imbibe this progressive,
faith-yielding understanding and thereby be moved to
invite Lord Nitynanda Prabhus profound grace and
super-excellent gift further into the core of their hearts.
As I present this offering I must plainly state that any
faults or unbecoming aspects of this presentation should
only be attributed to my inevitably flawed efforts in
compilation, and need never give rise to disrepute for
the expressions of our divine guardians. Furthermore,
any and all redeeming quality and dedication-inspiring
beauty appreciated herein is surely to be considered
the exclusive property of our divine guardians, and all
honour must be offered to their self-revealing lotus feet.
In closing, I must appeal to His Divine Grace rla
Govinda Mahrj for his mercy, his mercy being the only
capacity with which I have the potential to be successful
in my hearts endeavour to please him. Moreover,
I invoke the blessings of the Vaiavas and our revered
readers with whose goodwill my prayer for the grace of
our Spiritual Master may be enriched and realistically
realisable. May all be satisfied with this offering.

Humbly,

of that glorious giver of Gaura-Ka, who is known as

was a small boy, He performed supremely sweet and
charming Pastimes in the village of Ekachakr invoking
the deepest heartfelt happiness in His mother, father,
relatives, and close friends; and later after a sannys
arrived at the house of young Nitynanda and prayed to
Hi Pait for his son, Lord Nitynanda was placed
in the hands of the travelling sdhu and wandered
throughout the length and breadth of India visiting
sacred places of pilgrimage.

service of that gracious bestower of Gaura-Ka,
r Nitynandachandra! It was He who received the
divine instruction from Gaurachandra to deliver all
souls by bestowing divine love through the Holy Name.
Showing the extremity of His divine love, He delivered
those two fallen wine-drinking brhmaas (Jagi and

kali-yuga even after they had attacked Him and blood
was oozing from His body.

r Gaurga Mahprabhu ordered all His beloved

who lovingly captivate the heart of r Chaitanyadev.

service unto that bestower of Gaura-Ka, r

sannysa-ll for the purpose of delivering the persons of
warped logic deviated by exploitation and renunciation
(karmma and jna). He delivered them by making them
all chant the Holy Name of Ka. After Mahprabhus
acceptance of sannysa, Nitynanda Prabhu followed Him
faithfully like a shadow wherever He wentover land,

the hearts wishes of r Gaurachandra.

The Divine Pastimes of

Compiled from lectures of

His Divine Grace

rla Bhakti Sundar Govinda
Dev-Goswm Mahrj

rla Guru Mahrj, rla Bhakti Rakak rdhar Dev-

Goswm Mahrj, composed a Sanskrit poem glorifying
r Nitynanda Prabhu called the rman Nitynanda
Dvdaakam. Within that composition rla Guru Mahrj
gave his explanation about the transcendental personal
identity of Nitynanda Prabhu, and not with one loka,
with four lokas of explanation. rla Ka Ds Kavirj
Goswm glorified Nitynanda Prabhu in the beginning
of his r Chaitanya-charitmta and all the lokas he
wrote referred to Nitynanda Prabhus existence above
the mundane manifestation in the Paravyoma-Dhm, the
spiritual world. I was surprised that rla Guru Mahrj
began his explanation about Nitynanda Prabhu in that
way with this loka:

yo nanto nanta-vaktrair niravadhi hari-

rla Guru Mahrj started with this loka because
he was following the main directives of the previous
chryyas. From Vndvan Ds hkur to Ka Ds
Kavirj Goswm and from rla Ka Ds Kavirj

of progress and the speciality of rla Guru Mahrj.
His second loka is above brahma-loka:

O my heart, please eternally render divine

service to that gracious giver of Gaura-Kar
Nitynandachandra. In the great transcendental
kingdom Paravyoma Vaikuha He expands into the
form of Sakaraa of the first quadruple expansion,
in which form He ever expands the ecstasy of the
divine Pastimes of r Hari in the conscious plane
of pure existence (uddha-sattva); within the jvas He
presides as the ego, and sometimes He shows His
Divine Pastimes just like an ordinary jva.
This kind of presentation we see in the style of rla
Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm. Kavirj Goswm composed
five lokas in r Chaitanya-charitmta about Nitynanda
Prabhus identity and divine manifestation as Mla-Sakaraa,
the Supreme Personality of Godheads second expansion.
And why is it? Because he had felt the divine form of
Nitynanda Prabhu! He and Vndvan Ds hkur
have tried to give us feelings, transcendental feelings,
12 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

about Nitynanda Prabhus super-position. Before we

hear about Nitynanda Prabhus activities we shouldnt
feel anything mundane about Nitynanda Prabhu.
His character is composed within Goloka Vndvan
of Paravyoma-Dhm, within the highest aspect of the
spiritual world. He is actually the Origin, the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, coming down, down, down, all
the way to the form of Kirodakaay Viu, the Supreme
Soul living inside of everything in the material universe.
But Nitynanda Prabhu is a non-different form of r
Balarm of Goloka Vndvan and Mla-Sakaraa of
Vaikuha. rla Guru Mahrj and the chryyas want
to give this consciousness to the conditioned souls to
protect them from making any atmosphere of mundanity.
Then rla Guru Mahrj continued,

r-ka-premanm parama-sukhamaya
ko pyachintya padrtho
yad gandht sajjanaugh nigama-bahumata
mokam apy kipanti
kaivalyaivaryya-sev-pradagaa iti yasygata

My dear heart, please eternally worship that gracious

giver of Gaura-Kar Nitynandachandra. It is
He who bestows upon us pure unalloyed divine love for
the Supreme Lord r Ka (r-Ka-prema) composed
of the most supreme and intense ecstasy. The love that
He distributes carries an inconceivable importit is of
such ecstasy that the sdhus who may experience only
a hint of its fragrance, hatefully cast away all thought

of liberation in the One as propounded in the Vedas.

Furthermore, His Avatras, who bestow the divine love
of service in the transcendental majesty of Vaikuha,
are but expansions of His expansion.
By the mercy of that Nitynanda Prabhu we can
very easily get that Ka-prema which gives us all
transcendental happiness, joyfulness and ecstasy,
everything! Wherever there is a little bit of that Ka-
prema all the wealth of the transcendental world
appears.

Two Prabhus and One Mah-Prabhu

In the Scriptures it is written:

eka mahprabhu, ra prabhu dui-jana

dui prabhu seve mahprabhura charaa
(r Chaitanya-charitmta: di-ll, 7.14)

There is one Mahprabhu, He is the famous r

Gaurgasundar of r Nabadwp Dhm, who later
became known as r Ka Chaitanya. Adwaita Prabhu
and Nitynanda Prabhu, both are Prabhu (Master) but
Mahprabhu is Mah-Prabhu (the Supreme Master). Both
Adwaita chryya and Nitynanda Prabhu very happily
served Mahprabhu and spread His conception of Ka
consciousness throughout the universe during Their
divine Pastimes. Adwaita Prabhu prayed constantly
with tears, Ganges water and Tulas leaves for Lord
Ka to appear and rescue the fallen souls of kali-yuga
and Mahprabhu appeared in answer to His prayer.
So Mahprabhu appeared by the grace of Adwaita
Prabhu. But before Mahprabhu appeared Nitynanda
Prabhu also appeared and made all the arrangements for
rescuing the jva-souls of this world.
14 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

Young Nitynanda
Nitynanda Prabhu was born in Rha-dea, near
Burdwan in the Brbhm district of Bengal, in the
village of Ekachakr. Later that village became known
as Garbhavs and at present is very famously known
as Vrachandrapur. Vrachandra Prabhu was the son of
Nitynanda Prabhu and to honour his name the village
is famous as Vrachandrapur. Gaurga Mahprabhu
also went there, so everyone worships that place. There
Nitynanda Prabhu took birth as the only son of His
mother Padmvat-dev and His father Hi Pait
Ojh. After Nitynanda Prabhu had taken birth all
auspiciousness came to Rha-dea, it was enriched
so much with Ka-bhakti. He grew up there with the
children of the village and His Pastimes were all very
miraculous. All the children of Ekachakr would play
with Nitynanda Prabhu but He would only play Ka-
ll. Just like Balarm played as a child in Vndvan,
Nitynanda Prabhus childhood very similarly happened
in Rha-dea as He enacted so many Pastimes of Ka-
ll with the other children of the village. Many wonderful
descriptions of that have been given in the Scriptures.

Taken by a Sannys
When Nitynanda Prabhu was just twelve years old a
sannys came to His fathers house. As soon as the sannys
saw young Nitynanda he immediately understood that
He was not an ordinary boy and felt he could not leave
Nitynanda Prabhus association. The sannys fainted
to see Nitynanda Prabhu and finally asked His father,
Hi Pait, I am going to many pilgrimage places, and
it is my prayer that you give this boy to me as an associate
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 15

servitor. Hearing this was like a thunderbolt to Hi

Pait. Hi Pait was beside himself to hear that and
he fainted. Nitynanda Prabhu was the very joy of his
life. But at that time religion was very strong within the
mind of everyone. It was the custom that if any sannys,
especially any Vaiava sannys, wants anything, ones
son or even ones own life or anything, the people are
giving everything to that sannys. Nitynanda Prabhu
was more than life to Hi Pait but that was the
custom. Hi Pait felt he could never leave his
only son Nitynanda but he also felt he could not say,
No, I cannot leave Nitynanda. So finally he considered,
The sannys has prayed and we must fulfil his desire.
He could not deny the sannyss demand and finally he
gave Nitynanda Prabhu to that sannys.
After giving away Nitynanda Hi Pait was like
a pgal man (loke bale ho ojh haila pgala, CB 2.3.98).
He became half-mad in separation and Mother Padmvat
fainted but still they gave away Nitynanda Prabhu.
In this way Nitynanda Prabhu left His house when
He was twelve years old. His Pastimes were miraculous
and He was an avadht from childhood. He did not
care. He went with that sannys and toured the whole
of India. Some say that sannys was Mdhavendra Pur,
and some say he was another sannys but it is certain
that later Nitynanda met Mdhavendra Pur in the
pilgrimage places. It is not clear who the sannys was
but no doubt he was a great personality and Nitynanda
Prabhu served him. We think it was Mdhavendra
Pur but later we know that Nitynanda Prabhu and
Mdhavendra Puri could understand each other easily
and Mdhavendra Pur accepted Nitynanda Prabhu, by
divine will, as his disciple.
16 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

Where is Ka?
Meeting Mdhavendra Pur was a turning point in
Nitynanda Prabhus life and after that He went to
so many pilgrimage places. He saw all the pilgrimage
places in the ecstasy of Ka-prema. Everywhere
He went He gave Ka-prema but He Himself was hiding.
Nitynanda Prabhu was perhaps one year senior in age
to Mahprabhu and before joining in Mahprabhus
Pastimes, Nitynanda Prabhu did not reveal much of
His actual nature. But He was always thinking Himself
to be Balarm and His activities were like that. He was
not hiding that. Finally He went to Vndvan, where
He searched, Where is Ka? Where is Ka?
He asked the braja-bss where He could find Ka and
Ka Himself in the form of a human came to Him and
said: I am not here, I have now appeared in a household
in Nabadwp. Then clearly the feelings manifested
within the heart of Nitynanda Prabhu, Now My
time has come to join ChaitanyadevNimi Pait,
in Nabadwp Dhm. He knew that Nima Pait was
really Ka Himself.

The Avadht
When rpd Nitynanda Prabhu first came to Nabadwp
Dhm no one could understand who He was or where
He had come from. No one could say whether He was a
brahmchr, a ghastha, a vnaprastha or a sannys. People
saw all these forms in Him. At that time many people
came to criticise Nitynanda Prabhus divine character
because He lived under no rules or regulations. Actually
Nitynanda Prabhus nature was to be an avadht.
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 17

The ordinary idea of an avadht has been given in the

Vaiava Tantra,

anta kta bahi aiva

sabhy vaiavo mata
nn-vea-dhar kol
vicharanti mah tale
(Vaiava Tantra)

He appears to be internally like a kta, a worshipper

of material energy. Externally he appears like a follower
of Lord iva but still participates in the assemblies of
Vaiavas and seems to appreciate Vaiava thought. He
does not care for any particular dress or follow any rules
or regulations as He wanders throughout the world.
But Nitynanda Prabhu was fully transcendental
and should never be confused with anyone mundane.
His nature as an avadht can be understood in this way,
In His heart (anta) is playing Rdh-Ka (uddha-
kta) and His form externally (bahi) is like Lord iva
(aiva). When He joins an assembly His mentality is
fully that of a Vaiava. When He is travelling sometimes
He wears cloth, sometimes He wears no cloth, sometimes
He wears many gold ornaments, jewels and rich garments
and sometimes He wears sannys dress.
Really, avadht means one who is self-controlled,
who is not controlled by Scriptural rules or regulations.
Whatever He does, that is always right and perfect.
He will do anything and everything and is never to be
considered wrong. If He is seen to be wrong externally
in the eyes of others then that is also right. Nitynanda
Prabhu became known by everyone as Avadht. Everyone
called Him Avadht. The people even forgot that
His name was Nitynanda. They would say, Oh, Avadht
is coming.

Waiting for Nitynanda

Nitynanda Prabhu appeared to the common people as if
He were a mad avadht as He came to Nabadwp. At that
time, Mahprabhu had also came back from Gay Dhm.
Mahprabhu started performing sakrttan every night
in rvas Paits house and showed His Ka-prema to
the devotees assembly. Adwaita Prabhu declared that
Mahprabhu was Bhagavn. rvas Pait, Gaddhar
Pait and all the devotees everywhere declared that
Mahprabhu was Bhagavn, and Mahprabhu also
showed them that. When the devotees understood the
divine form of Mahprabhu they were very happy and
they understood that the Lord Himself had appeared
for bestowing His mercy to the world through Harinm-
sakrttan. But Mahprabhu was not showing His full
manifestation as the giver of Ka-prema. Nobody knew
why Mahprabhu wasnt widely starting His sakrttan
movement, but when Nitynanda came they understood
the cause of Mahprabhus behaviour. Mahprabhu had
been waiting for Nitynanda.

Mahprabhus Dream
Nitynanda Prabhu came to Nabadwp searching,
Where is Nimi Pait? Where is Nima Pait? When
He understood that Mahprabhu was living in Jagannth
Miras house He hid Himself in Mypur to wait and
see if Mahprabhu would discover Him. He went to the
house of Mahprabhus dear devotee Nandan chryya
and hid Himself, telling Nandan chryya, Do not tell
anyone anything; I want to see what Ka will do. That
morning Mahprabhu told His devotees,
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 19

tla-dhvaja eka rathasasrera sra

(r Chaitanya-Bhgavat: Madhya-ll, 3.142)

Last night I saw in My dream a chariot marked with

the flag of a palm tree, in the chariot of Baladev Himself.
Within the chariot there was one mahpurua, great
personality, and He was searching for My house. That
chariot came in front of My house and met with Me.
I have seen that mahpurua. I am thinking that Baladev
Himself has taken the form of a mahpurua and He has
already come to Nabadwp. You go and search where
He is! He must be somewhere in Nabadwp. He has
appeared here and I want to see if He will discover Me.
The devotees searched everywhere, but they could not
find Nitynanda Prabhu. They were thinking it was
simply Mahprabhus dream and they came back and
told Mahprabhu, We could not find Him anywhere.
But Mahprabhu said, It is not only a dream, it is a
truthful dream. Nitynanda is very powerful and He is
hiding Himself. It is a very hidden matter so I shall go to
find Him.

Ecstatic Embrace
Then Mahprabhu went directly to Nandan chryyas
bhavan and there Mahprabhu and His devotees saw
Nitynanda Prabhu seated on the veranda of the house.
Nitynanda had seen Mahprabhu come and could not
move because His heart was so full of ecstasy and the
joy of Ka-prema. When Mahprabhu saw Nitynanda
His heart was also full with the joy of Ka-prema and
He felt very much intoxicated. They both fainted. Then
20 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

Mahprabhu came forward and embraced Nitynanda

and They both fainted again. After some time they
regained their senses and they cried in the Name of
Ka. Nitynanda Prabhu said, I went to Vndvan
but Ka was not there. Then someone told Me You
were here in Nabadwp, so I have come. Now I beg You,
Please save Me.
Nitynanda Prabhu surrendered to Mahprabhu and
Mahprabhu embraced Nitynanda Prabhu with full
love, affection, honour, everything.
Both Mahprabhu and Nitynanda Prabhu took
Their divine forms and the devotees understood that
Nitynanda Prabhu was not an ordinary sannys or
ordinary brahmchr. They did not know Nitynanda
Prabhu at the time but they saw Mahprabhus
expression and Nitynanda Prabhus expression and they
immediately understood that They had both appeared
from the divine abode. In many places in the Scriptures
it is said that Mahprabhu is non-different from Ka,
abhinna-swarp, and in that way they also considered
Nitynanda Prabhu.

Mah-Sakrttan
That was the first day that Nitynanda Prabhu joined in
Mahprabhus party and up to His last days Nitynanda
Prabhu preached Chaitanya Mahprabhus glories. From
that day Mahprabhu and Nitynanda Prabhu started
mah-sakrttan. Mahprabhu appeared to inaugurate
sakrttan-yaj, sacrifice in the form of sakrttan
(congregational chanting) as described in the rmad-
Bhgavatam:
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 21

ka-vara tvika
sgopgstra-pradam
yajai sakrtana-pryair
yajanti hi su-medhasa
(11.5.32)

In the age of Kali, persons of fine theistic intellect perform

the sacrifice of congregational chanting (sakrttan-yaj)
to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly
sings nothing but the Names of Ka and describes His
glories with great pleasure. He is Ka Himself appearing
in a molten gold complexion born from supreme divine
emotion. With His personal beauty, divine Name, all-
merciful nature and benevolent associates He destroys
the darkness of ignorance in the mundane world.
Mahprabhu Himself gave the gist of the nature of
Harinm-sakrttan:

cheto-darpaa-mrjana bhava-mah-
dvgni-nirvpaa
reya-kairava-chandrik-vitaraa
vidy-vadh-jvanam
nandmbudhi-vardhana prati-pada
prmtsvdana
sarvtma-snapana para vijayate
r-ka-sakrttanam
(r Chaitanya-charitmta: Antya-ll, 20.12)

May r Ka-sakrttan be all-victorious in its pristine

glory! This congregational chanting of the Holy Names
of the Lord cleanses the looking-glass of consciousness,
extinguishes the raging forest fire of material existence,
and spreads the benediction moon-rays that cause the
lotus of the heart to bloom. This chanting is pure ecstasy,
22 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

it is the flavour of full nectar at every moment, bathing

and cooling the entire self. That param vijayate r-Ka-
sakrttanam, that supremely victorious sakrttan of
Mahprabhu, started with Nitynanda Prabhus arrival
and in such a glorious way continued day by day in r
Nabadwp Dhm.

Mahprabhus Preaching Party

Already Adwaita chryya had joined Mahprabhu.
Even before Mahprabhu, Harids hkur very
beautifully and intensely preached Ka consciousness
and the Hare Ka Mahmantra. Previously, Harids
hkur had many tests in his preaching but ultimately
even the Muslim governor came under his influence.
But when Harids hkur saw Mahprabhu reveal
His divine form of a religious preacher Harids hkur
joined Mahprabhus mission. Then when Nitynanda
Prabhu joined in the party of Mahprabhu, the party of
Mahprabhu took full form. Nitynanda Prabhu was
always intoxicated with Ka-prema and the treasure
of Mahprabhus unique gift of divine love. When
Nitynanda Prabhu joined, Mahprabhu wanted to
publicly preach Ka consciousness. Harids hkur
and Nitynanda Prabhu were very dear friends, bosom
friends. Both were intoxicated with Harinm-sakrttan
and Mahprabhu chose Nitynanda Prabhu and Harids
hkur to begin His preaching programme. He selected
them to be like military generals because they could
widely, wholeheartedly and affectionately preach Ka
consciousness in a lovely way.

Mahprabhus Sacred Order

Mahprabhu gave them His preaching line,

jagatera pitka, ye n bhaje bpa

pit-droh ptakra janma-janma tpa
(r Chaitanya-Bhgavat: Madhya-ll, 1.202)

Ka is the father of the entire universe, and anyone

who does not respect his father is rebellious and sinful
and therefore subjected to miseries birth after birth.

(r Chaitanya-Bhgavat: Madhya-ll, 13.43)

(r Chaitanya-Bhgavat: Madhya-ll, 13.8-11)

Listen, listen, Nitynanda! Listen, Haridsa! Go door

to door and tell everyone they will practise Ka
consciousness! Tell them, Ka consciousness is the
24 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

supreme goal of life, tell them, bolo Ka, bhaja Ka,

koro Ka ika, chant the Hare Ka Mahmantra, serve
Lord Ka and learn the teachings of r Ka. You
will come back to Me daily in the evening. Nothing else
is necessary for you to do, and whoever will take it with
a clean heart, I shall be a slave of them, and whoever will
be anti, I shall punish them. In this way Mahprabhu
gave orders to Nitynanda Prabhu and Harids hkur
and started His preaching programme.

Nitynanda Prabhus Benevolent Nature

At first Nitynanda Prabhu and Harids hkur started
preaching to gentle families without any problems
but then they saw Jagi and Mdhi in the road.
Jagi and Mdhi were prestigious in the city as local
administrators of the government, but they were men of
very bad character. They were always drinking, eating
meat and doing many wrong things. That day they were
drinking in the road in front of everyone. Nitynanda
Prabhu had a desperate mood and when He saw Jagi
and Mdhi seated in the road drinking wine, etc.
Nitynanda Prabhu told Harids, These are the perfect
persons to purify with Harinm-sakrttan.
Harids hkur was a wise man; he said, Dont go
there! The whole world is open for You. Why are You
going to them? You can preach Mahprabhus conception
to everyone. You leave them, they are very bad, etc., etc.
Nitynanda Prabhu said, This is a perfect target, I must
rescue them, then Mahprabhus glory will be more and
more exalted all over the world.
Harids was also a little aged. He said, You can go, I
wont go. If they will chastise You, You may be able to
run away, but I cannot run. So it will be dangerous for
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 25

me. It is not necessary to go there. He was testing the

mind of Nitynanda Prabhu but Nitynanda Prabhu
said, No, this is a first class opportunity for showing the
quality of Mahprabhus mercy. You must go with Me.
Then they went to Jagi and Mdhi and said, O
Jagi! O Mdhi! You are doing so many things but if you
chant the Hare Ka Mahmantra, you will be rescued.
Jagi and Mdhi were drunk. They threatened
Nitynanda and Harids, Oh, You are sannyss and You
have come here trying to teach us? We shall teach You! Get
out of here, You are nonsense persons. Otherwise we will
kill You! Nitynanda again approached them but they
came to beat Nitynanda and Harids. Harids hkur
couldnt run away but he tried. But the drunken Jagi
and Mdhi were unable to run properly. So Nitynanda
and Harids got away by some means. Nitynanda and
Harids came back and Harids reported to Mahprabhu,
Today somehow I saved my life but I will not go out
again with that pgal (crazy) Nitynanda! Mahprabhu
smiled to hear their report knowing what was to come.

Nitynanda Prabhus Determination

The next day Nitynanda Prabhu settled, I must give
Ka-prema to them. Nitynanda again targeted Jagi
and Mdhi. Harids was behind, what shall he do?
Mahprabhu had ordered he and Nitynanda to preach
together. That day they went and again found Jagi and
Mdhi drinking wine. Nitynanda Prabhu said, Jagi
and Mdhi, you can do anything but just chant Hare
Ka! It is the order of Mahprabhu.
When Nitynanda told them Mdhi was more drunk
and said, Oh, the order of Mahprabhu! You ran away
yesterday but today again You have come? Im going to
26 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

show You! There was a clay wine pot nearby and Mdhi
threw it at the head of Nitynanda. The pot cut Him and
with blood falling from His head Nitynanda Prabhu said,
This is more of Mahprabhus mercy upon Me, and
He again told them, You can beat Me more and more, it
is ok, no problem. You have hit Me but I shall excuse that.
I forgive you. But you chant Hare Ka! It is the order
of Mahprabhu. Without a doubt you will be rescued.
Mahprabhu said, bolo Ka bhaja Ka koro Ka ik.
You please take this religion of Mahprabhu.
Mdhi said, Now again You are coming to me!
You are so energetic, I am going to show You! I shall
teach You! Then again Mdhi took a clay wine-pot and
went to throw it at Nitynanda Prabhu, but his brother
Jagi took his hand and told him, Nonsense! Why are
you chastising this pgal sdhu? He is a sannys. It is not
necessary to hit Him again. Why you are behaving like
this? It is nonsense. Leave Him alone! Like this Jagi
made some good comments and stopped him.

Mahprabhus Anger
In the meantime Harids had gone back and given
news to Mahprabhu about what had happened: that
Nitynanda Prabhu had been hit and that He did not
want to come back as He was determined to give Harinm
and Ka-prema to Jagi and Mdhi.
Then Mahprabhu went there with His full battalion
and He saw the blood on Nitynanda Prabhus head.
Mahprabhu was very angry. He forgot His mundane
appearance and He called for His sudaran chakra,
(Chakra, chakra, chakraPrabhu ke ghane ghane, CB
Madhya-ll: 13.185). Chakra! Chakra! Chakra!, He called
out again and again. He wanted to cut off the heads of
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 27

Jagi and Mdhi. Everyone saw the chakra following

behind Mahprabhu as He chastised Jagi and Mdhi,
I shall kill you! You have dealt wrongly with Nitynanda
Prabhu.
Nitynanda Prabhu took the lotus feet of Mahprabhu
and said, What are You doing? This is not dvpar-yuga.
It is kali-yuga. Here tolerance and humility are necessary.
If You want to bestow Your mercy upon others, through
tolerance and humility You can do that. You cannot use
the chakra in this Avatr. This incarnation is not for that.
Mahprabhu said, I cannot tolerate this type of
activity of the asuras.
Nitynanda replied, But both of them are not
offenders. Mdhi is an offender, he hit Me. But Jagi
rescued Me from him. One saved Me from the others
stupidity.

Mahprabhus Sympathy
After hearing that Jagi saved Nitynanda, Mahprabhu
excused Jagi. Jagi took the Hare Ka Mahmantra and
fell down thinking of his previous karmma. He took the
lotus feet of Mahprabhu, Mahprabhu, please forgive
my offences. There is no other way for me. Mahprabhu
embraced Jagi and then Jagi received Ka-prema.
The circumstances were very heavy but Mdhi also
became a little conscious by seeing Jagis activities.
Mdhi said, I have done so much sinful work but
Jagi has got relief from all his sins, why not me?
Nitynanda Prabhu said, Mahprabhu, please forgive
their offences. Then Mdhi took the lotus feet of
Mahprabhu, but Mahprabhu said, I cannot do the
same for you as I did for Jagi. You go to Nitynanda
Prabhu. If He will give you forgiveness, then you will get
28 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

My embrace. Otherwise, it is impossible for Me to accept

you. If Nitynanda Prabhu will give you forgiveness you
will get that result of the Hare Ka Mahmantra.
Then Mdhi took Nitynanda Prabhus lotus feet.
Nitynanda Prabhu embraced Mdhi, then Mahprabhu
embraced Mdhi and his sin was cleared. Jagi and
Mdhi became pure devotees and they cried so much,
We have done so much wrong, etc., etc. Jagi and
Mdhi then chanted Hare Ka and danced with
Ka-prema.

Patita-Pvana Nitynanda
To see Mahprabhus Pastimes as the rescuer of the
conditioned souls, the general people were so astonished
and they glorified Mahprabhu so much. Mahprabhu
said to Jagi and Mdhi,

prabhu bole, tor ra n karis ppa

jagi mdhi bole,ra nre vpa
(r Chaitanya-Bhgavat: Madhya-ll, 13.225)

Jagi and Mdhi, if you do not do this again, and you

leave the activities you did before, I can forgive your
offences forever. From this day you try to practise Ka
consciousness and you will be so glorious. Now chant
Hare Ka!
Jagi and Mdhi said, ra nre vpa, we will never
do that again. You have excused us. We will follow what
You say as our duty. Jagi and Mdhi then asked
Mahprabhu, Please give some service to us, accept
us as Your servitors. Mahprabhu and Nitynanda
Prabhu said, You chant Hare Ka, give this Hare
Ka Mahmantra to everyone, and do Vaiava-sev
by sweeping the pathway by the Ganges and keeping it
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 29

clean. Then with a clean heart you can proceed. You will
have no need to fear Yamarj. Jagi and Mdhi every
day did that, and that place is still known as Mdhi-
gh. Our parikram party crosses the Ganges at that
place. All the demigods danced to see the rescue of Jagi
and Mdhi. All the Pastimes of the Lord Nitynanda
and Mahprabhu are for rescuing the conditioned jva-
souls. In the Pastimes of rescuing Jagi and Mdhi we
can see that Nitynanda Prabhu is more merciful than
even Mahprabhu.

The Ever-Worshipable Nitynanda

Nitynanda Prabhus character was like that of an
intoxicated madman. He was physically very strong
like Lord Balarm. If He saw a bull in the road
He would charge the bull and jump over him or hop
on his back and ride him. He would jump in and swim
with crocodiles in the Ganges even after Hed seen
crocodiles swimming there. Sometimes He would visit
the house of rvas Pait and take breast milk from
his wife. Nitynanda Prabhu had so many miraculous
characteristics! Sometimes Nitynanda Prabhu would
come to achmts house unaware that He was naked.
It happened many days, and like a child He would call,
Where is Ka? Where is Ka? On one occasion
Mahprabhu said, Oh! You have no cloth! Why are
You naked? Nitynanda Prabhu said, Oh! I did not
know I was naked!
At that time Mahprabhu was talking with
Viupriydev and many devotees who were present,
and they were very surprised to see Nitynanda Prabhus
naked form. Mahprabhu gave some cloth to Nitynanda
Prabhu and then divided His kaupn (undergarment)
30 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

into many pieces. Mahprabhu Chaitanyadev then

distributed the pieces to all His devotees and told them,
Worship this piece of underwear every day because by
Nitynanda Prabhus connection you will be rescued
from everything. You will have no fear of illusion.
You can do anything, but if you chant the Holy Name of
Nitynanda, you will get relief from all disturbances.
Mahprabhu Himself then further glorified Nitynanda
Prabhu with this loka,

madir javan jadi nitynanda dhare

tathpi brahmra vandya kahila tomare
(r Chaitanya-Bhgavat: Antya-ll, 6.123)
Nitynanda Prabhu can do anything and everything.
Even if you see Nitynanda Prabhu mixing with very
bad society, if you see Him intoxicated with a drunken
woman in one arm and a bottle of wine in His other arm,
know that He has divine character. If Lord Brahm, the
creator of the universe, will see Him at that time he will
fall down and pay full daavat praams with his four
heads to the lotus feet of Nitynanda Prabhu. This is
Nitynanda Prabhus inconceivable divine character.
He was the protector of the society of Mahprabhu
Chaitanyadev. He was all-in-all.

Mahprabhu took Sannys

Every day sakrttan continued with the Pacha-Tattva
and Harids hkur in r Nabadwp Dhm. The Pacha-

The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 31

Mahprabhu, Nitynanda Prabhu, Adwaita Prabhu,

Gaddhar Pait, rvas hkur and all the other
devotees of Mahprabhu every day led thousands of
people in Harinm-sakrttan, and the Pacha-Tattva
distributed the Harinm Mahmantra in this mundane
world. Chnd Kz was delivered and so many things
happened in Nabadwp. At one function Mahprabhu
gave permission for Nitynanda Prabhu to hold a
Vysa-pj ceremony. Nitynanda Prabhu did that pj
but He gave the final garland to Mahprabhu, thereby
showing Mahprabhus glories. Mahprabhu chanted
the Holy Name of Lord Ka: Hare Ka Hare Ka
Ka Ka Hare Hare, Hare Rma Hare Rma Rma
Rma Hare Hare. This was Chaitanya Mahprabhus
preaching, but more than that, He was the non-different
form of the Hare Ka MahmantraHe was the non-
different form of r r Rdh-Ka.
r Chaitanya Mahprabhu bestowed His mercy to
the general people and He wanted to rescue the jva-
souls all over the world. For that He decided, I shall
take sannys. Nitynanda Prabhu is the main pillar of
Mahprabhus preaching of Ka consciousness, and
when Mahprabhu took sannys Nitynanda Prabhu
accompanied Him. Mahprabhu circled Rha-dea for
three days, and Nitynanda Prabhu eventually brought
Him to Adwaita chryyas house. achmt, Adwaita
chryya, and the other devotees gave their overflowing
Ka-prema to the people. Then Mahprabhu went to
Pur. Nitynanda Prabhu stayed with Mahprabhu like
a guardian. Nitynanda Prabhu had travelled before and
He recited the glories of Sak Gopl for Mahprabhu as
they travelled to Pur.
32 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

Why do You need a Daa?

Just before entering Pur Dhm, Mahprabhu bathed

in the river at hranl. While He was bathing
Nitynanda Prabhu broke Mahprabhus sannys
daam. It was an eka-daa and Nitynanda Prabhu
broke it into three pieces and threw it in the river.
Mahprabhu had taken sannys and He showed in
His Pastimes much care in following the rules and
regulations of a sannys very strictly. He showed
His anger to Nitynanda Prabhu and said, I have
only one possession, My sannys daam, and You
have broken that and thrown it away! Nitynanda
Prabhu did not care about anything. He said, Why do
You need to carry a daam? You are Ka Himself,
what need do You have for a daam? Mahprabhu
said, I do not want to travel with you all. I shall go
alone. Will you all go first, or I shall go first? They
replied, You go first and we shall go behind. Then
Mahprabhu very quickly ran to Lord Jagannth
and fainted in the Jagannth Temple. You know that
history. Srvabhauma Bhachryya took His body to
his home. Nitynanda Prabhu immediately assessed
the situation and understood that Mahprabhu was
at Srvabhauma Bhachryyas house. He went to
Srvabhaumas house, met with Mahprabhu, and
later He went to see Lord Jagannth. In this way
Mahprabhu started preaching in Pur Dhm with
Nitynanda Prabhu and others.
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 33

Nitynanda Prabhu
The Merciful Lord of all Jva-Souls.
Nitynanda Prabhu accepted everyone, but
Mahprabhu would chastise those who were offensive.
Mahprabhu showed some caution in distributing
Ka-nma and Ka-prema. Mahprabhu followed
the rules and regulations of sannys life very strictly
and because of this Mahprabhu could not give shelter
to offenders. When Mahprabhu went to South India
He took Kliya Ka Ds with Him. In r Chaitanya-
charitmta he is referred to as Kla Ka Ds.
On their tour Kliya Ka Ds suffered some
disturbance with some women and Mahprabhu
rescued him from that. Later when they returned to
Jagannth Pur Mahprabhu said, I want to leave this
boy Kliya Ka Ds, he was irresponsible and greatly
disturbed our mission. I dont want to keep him with Me.
I dont want to be responsible for him. Kliya Ka
Ds, as an eternal parad devotee (of r Nitynanda
Prabhu), played this role in the Lords drama. At that
time Nitynanda Prabhu did not leave him, He told
Mahprabhu, If You do not want to keep him it is no
problem, I will take him. I will send him to Nabadwp to
give news to achmt and the other devotees that You
have come back from South India.
In this way Nitynanda Prabhu showed His extreme
mercy and Kliya Ka Ds spent the rest of his life with
Nitynanda Prabhu. So even when Mahprabhu is angry
Nitynanda Prabhu keeps devotees at His lotus feet. The
conditioned souls can have much hope when they see
the very deep and merciful character of r Nitynanda
Prabhu.

Liberate Bengal!
Mahprabhu lived in Pur Dhm with a limited group
of His exclusive devotees. Mahprabhu had so many
devotees but they would come to visit Pur for a few
months every year. One year Nitynanda Prabhu came
to Pur Dhm with so many of His followers, all dvdaa-
goplas, the incarnations of the twelve cowherd boys
of Vndvan. They had all been preaching in Bengal
and after their visit Mahprabhu ordered Nitynanda
Prabhu, Go to Rha-dea and preach there. I have sent

You look after East India. This is our preaching strategy.
You are not to come back here to Pur Dhm. I will be
with You everywhere. Whenever You remember Me I
shall appear wherever You are. So it is not necessary for
You to come here every year. Please go to Rha-dea
and preach. Then Nitynanda Prabhu went back to
Bengal with all His followers, first to ntipur, then to
Nabadwp, and from there to other places. He preached
all over Bengal.

Nitynanda Prabhu
The Highest Distributer of Gaura-prema!
Both Mahprabhu and Nitynanda Prabhu were
born in brahmin families. Mahprabhu maintained
the rules and regulations of sannys life and preached
Ka consciousness. He distributed the Hare Ka
Mahmantra to everyone and revealed Rdh-Ka-
prema in this world. Mahprabhu always wanted to give
Ka-prema to the fallen souls who were not offensive.
But Nitynanda Prabhus preaching was different, He
did not care for external formality.

preme matta nitynanda kp-avatra

(r Chaitanya-charitmra: di-ll, 5.208)

Nitynanda Prabhu was always intoxicated with Gaura-

prema, intoxicated with the Name of rman Mahprabhu.
He knew only Mahprabhu and He distributed
Mahprabhu in an intoxicated mood of devotion. If
anyone would take shelter of Nitynanda Prabhu, He
would be very merciful to him. Nitynanda Prabhu
would not look at who was a good man or who was a
bad man. If anyone wanted to take shelter in the shade
of His lotus feet He would immediately shelter them
and send them to Gaurga Mahprabhu, He would
engage them in the service of Mahprabhu. If anyone
would once chant jaya achnandana, jaya Gaurahari,
Nitynanda Prabhu would think, I am the slave of him,
I will give him everything. Who was fallen, who was
not fallen, who was bad, who was goodHe made no
consideration. Many times Mahprabhu gave many
conditions but Nitynanda Prabhu had no conditions,
He only begged, Surrender to Chaitanyadev, surrender
to Gaurgadev, surrender to Nimi Vivambhar, and
you will be rescued! Nitynanda Prabhu looked at a
persons faith. Anywhere He saw the light of faith within
someone He would bestow His mercy. Faith is the very
foundation and gist of spiritual life. There was only
difficulty for faithless persons but Nitynanda Prabhu
is so merciful that when He found persons without
faith He would supply faith to them. He would give
them true spiritual property. In this way Nitynanda
Prabhus mercy truly goes everywhere! Even where
sunlight does not go, there also Nitynanda Prabhus
mercy goes. In this way He gave something even more
36 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

than Mahprabhu! That is Nitynanda Prabhus divine

character and supreme gift.
Nitynanda Prabhus preaching was actually Gaura
consciousness. His preaching was the glorification of
r Chaitanya Mahprabhu. Nitynanda Prabhu
distributed Mahprabhu Himself. Nitynanda Prabhus
mantram and preaching style was:

bhaja gaurga kaha gaurga laha gaurgera nma

ye jana gaurga bhaje sei haya mr pra

Chant the Divine Name of Gaurga Mahprabhu!

Whoever is worshipping Lord Gaurga, he is My life
and soul, whoever is practising Ka consciousness
under the guidance of Gaurga Mahprabhu, he is
My life and soul.
In this way Nitynanda Prabhu preached and His
preaching was so successful. Nitynanda Prabhu was
very merciful to whoever took shelter of Mahprabhu
He would give them all the wealth of Gaura-prema. This
was the character of Nitynanda Prabhu. Thousands and
thousands of people came to the lotus feet of Nitynanda
and He made them all the devotees of Gaurga
Mahprabhu. All over the world people are chanting
Mahprabhus Name and Kas Name. It is only by the
blessings of Nitynanda Prabhu that this has happened.
Without His mercy it would not be possible.

Nitynandas Indispensable Mercy

Without the mercy of Nitynanda Prabhu no one will get

Ka-prema. Without the mercy of Nitynanda Prabhu
one will not proceed even one inch in their spiritual

life. There are so many examples in the Scriptures that

illustrate this. A prominent example of Nitynanda
Prabhus all-important mercy is rla Raghunth Ds
Goswm. Raghunth Ds Goswm was a young prince
married to a beautiful young girl and he was incredibly
wealthy. But Raghunth Ds had an extremely renounced
mentality although he had so much property. Both his
father and his uncle wanted to give all their riches and
property to him for his benefit, but he did not want any
of it. He only wanted the mercy of Mahprabhu and
Nitynanda Prabhu.
Many times Raghunth Ds tried to leave his family
life to join Mahprabhus group but he was always
unsuccessful. His father was determined to prevent him
from leaving and used all his strength and influence
to do this. Security guards and accomplished fighters
were employed to keep him at home so he was unable
to leave. He wanted nothing but to go to the lotus feet
of r Chaitanya Mahprabhu and he wanted to leave
everything but he was forcefully restrained.
Then one day Nitynanda Prabhu came to Pnihi.
Raghunth Ds Goswms fathers house was
perhaps only seven miles or so from there, and seeing
this opportunity he told his father, My dear father,
Nitynanda Prabhu has come nearby and I want to
go and worship Him. His father said, Yes, that is no
difficulty. If you will not run away from home then
you can go. So Raghunth Ds went to Nitynanda
Prabhu, and Nitynanda Prabhu saw him from afar and
in a joking mood said, I shall punish you today. Then
Raghunath Das Goswami asked, Yes Prabhu, what is
Your punishment? Please give it to me. I shall take it
happily. Nitynanda Prabhu blessed him, saying Yes,
now you have come to Me and now you will get relief.
38 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

I will arrange for you to leave your mundane condition.

But before that I have one condition: with Me are a
thousand devotees, you feed them today and make
a feast here. I want to see that. If we are satisfied then
I will give My blessings to you.

Dadhi-Chi-Mahotsava

Raghunth Ds Goswm was very happy. Raghunth Ds

was rich and he immediately arranged dadhi (yoghurt),
chi (flat-rice), milk, kra, sandea, rasagull, mango,
banana, and so many other foodstuffs. Everyone honoured
all these preparations in clay pots. Raghunth Ds
arranged so much prasdam for thousands and thousands
of Nitynanda Prabhus followershe fed all the
devotees there very nicely. So many people were gathered
on the banks of the Ganges and the place was so full that
some were even standing in the Ganges while they ate.
Nitynanda Prabhu personally invited Chaitanya
Mahprabhu, and Mahprabhu came there in His subtle
form and accepted prasdam with Nitynanda Prabhu
and His devotees. Raghunth Ds fed all the devotees
there, and not only that, he gave pram to them all in
the form of gold coins. According to their positions all the
devotees were given pram. Nitynanda Prabhu was
given the largest quantity of gold coins, then Rghava
Pait, and then the general devotees. Everyone got
some money from Raghunth Ds. That festival became
very famously known as the Dadhi-Chi-Mahotsava,
the yoghurt and chipped rice festival, which enabled
Raghunth Ds to enter into Chaitanya-ll.
Nitynanda Prabhu was so happy that He put His
lotus feet on the head of Raghunth Ds Goswm,
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 39

and blessed him: Now your sasra will be dissolved;

you will be clean and free from your family life. I am
giving you entranceyou will get Lord Chaitanya
Mahprabhu. Now you go back to your house, all your
bondage is now gone, and you will soon come to the
lotus feet of Chaitanyadev.

Nitynandas Fruitful Blessing

Raghunth Ds went back to his house, but from then
onwards he did not enter the third zone of the house.
In those days, in rich peoples homes, there were three
zones. The women lived in the third zone; in the second
zone lived the masters rank; and in the first zone lived
all others. After receiving Nitynanda Prabhus blessing
Raghunth Ds stayed only in the first zone of his fathers
house. But still his father kept twelve guards around
him. Then one day, by the grace of Nitynanda Prabhu,
he got an opportunity and Raghunth Ds escaped. From
his home it took him twelve days to reach Mahprabhu
in Pur Dhm and almost the whole time, day and night,
he ran to reach there. That is another history but the point
is that by the grace of Nitynanda Prabhu, Raghunth
Ds Goswm got relief from family life and attained the
service of r Chaitanyadev.
Before he met Nitynanda Prabhu he could not leave
his sasra but by the blessing of Nitynanda Prabhu he
attained Mahprabhus lotus feet. And even more than that,
Mahprabhu accepted him as His exclusive servitor and
gave him the position as one of the pillars of His conception.
He became the prayojana-tattva-chryya, the exemplary
distributor of the topmost perfection of Mahprabhus
highest service idealhe showed the world the ultimate
destination, the very summum bonum of life.

Divine Fortune
Raghunth Ds Goswm expressed his feelings of divine
fortune,

I bow down to the lotus feet of r Guru, by whose

causeless mercy I have obtained the highest conception
of the Holy Name and the Divine Mantra. I have come
to the service of the great saviour r achnandan,
who is like a golden mountain standing to show the
direction of Ka-ll, and the association of His most
intimate servitor rla Svarp Dmodar. I gained the
association of rla Rpa Goswm, who was personally
ordered by Mahprabhu Himself to distribute the rasa
of spontaneous devotion, and Santan Goswm, who
revealed to the world perfect sambandha-jna, proper
acquaintance with the environment. I have been given
the divine abode of Mathur Vndvan with Rdh-
kua and Govardhan Hill. And finally I have been given
the hope and aspiration that one day I may be welcomed
into the service plane where r rRdhik and Mdhava
are in Their glory, sitting and playing.

Taking a Stand
This loka of rla Raghunth Ds Goswm is also the
expression of rla Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm. He also
felt, Nitynanda Prabhu has so mercifully given me the
dust of His lotus feet and so I have become Ka Ds
Kavirj Goswm. I am a very fallen soul, but, by the
grace of Nitynanda Prabhu, I have got everything. Now
I am truly a rich man because r Rpa and Raghunth
have given me their mercy and they have accepted me
as their own servitor. In this way Ka Ds Kavirj
Goswm has expressed his real wealth. Ka Ds
Kavirj Goswm had also prayed to Nitynanda Prabhu
just as Raghunth Ds did.
Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm lived with his brothers
family in Jhmaapur near Kw in Bengal. One night
there was a successful sakrttan festival happening
at their home and his brother was very happy. One of
Nitynanda Prabhus leading disciples, Mnaketan Rm
Ds, came to the sakrttan and his brother did not give
proper honour to him. His brother did not have full faith in
Nitynanda Prabhu and by failing to honour Mnaketan
Rm Ds he made some offence to Nitynanda Prabhu.
Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm became very angry with
his brother and chastised him so much: You are giving
honour to Chaitanyadev, but not to Nitynanda Prabhu?
You do not have faith in Nitynanda Prabhu? You have
done wrong! Your spiritual life will be spoiled by this!
You are very offensive and I do not want to stay here
with you anymore! Kavirj Goswm said many things
in glorification of Nitynanda Prabhu and Mnaketan
Rm Ds left angrily from Kavirj Goswms house.
42 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

But Kavirj Goswm received Nitynanda Prabhus

mercy because he tried to satisfy His servitor Mnaketan
Rm Ds.

Nitynanda Appears in a Dream

Nitynanda Prabhu was so happy with Kavirj Goswm
and that night, very close to early morning, Nitynanda
Prabhu appeared before Ka Ds in his dream. Kavirj
Goswm expertly expressed his vision of Nitynanda
Prabhus divine form in his r Chaitanya-charitmta.
Nitynanda Prabhu mercifully gave His blessings to
Kavirj Goswm and told him,

re re kadsa, n karaha bhaya

vndvane yha,th sarva labhya haya
(r Chaitanya-charitmta: di-ll, 5.195)

I am very happy with you. You have nothing to fear.

It is My blessing to you that you will leave this house
and family life and go to Vndvan. There you will
attain everything by My grace. You will get the exclusive
service of Rdh-Ka in Vndvan.

I Have Received Everything!

In the morning Kavirj Goswm immediately left his
house and ran to Vndvan. In r Chaitanya-charitmta
he glorified the mercy of Nitynanda Prabhu so much,
Nitynanda Prabhu has given me everything! By the
grace of Nitynanda Prabhu I have received Vndvan
Dhm. He ordered me, Go to Vndvan, and there
you will receive your super benefit. And when I came
to Vndvan, I have received the lotus feet of Rdh-

Madana-Mohan, Rdh-Govinda, and Rdh-Gopnth.

And all the Vaiavas, those who were alive and those who
were no longer alive, I received mercy from them all! And
the supermost devotees of r Chaitanya Mahprabhu,
rla Rpa Goswm, rla Santan Goswm, rla Jva
Goswm, rla Raghunth Ds Goswmfrom all
the Goswms I have received the dust of their lotus feet
and received their mercy. Very exclusively they have
embraced me, and particularly I have the mercy of rla
Raghunth Ds Goswm and rla Rpa Goswm.

Humility Attracts Mercy

When rla Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm composed r
Chaitanya-charitmta he concluded every chapter with
the idea,

r-rpa-raghuntha-pade yra a
chaitanya-charitmta kahe ka-dsa
(r Chaitanya-charitmta: di-ll, 1.110, etc.)

Without the mercy of r Rpa and Raghunth we

cannot understand Chaitanya Mahprabhu, and without
the mercy of Nitynanda Prabhu we cannot enter into
Chaitanya-ll or Vndvan-ll. Nitiyer koru hobe,
Braje Rdh-Ka pbe. If you will receive the mercy
of Nitynanda Prabhu, then simultaneously you will
get the mercy of all the Vaiavas and Mahprabhu
r Chaitanyadev. Everything is depending upon the mercy
of Nitynanda Prabhu. And really it is the truth that Ka
Ds Kavirj Goswm, he is the most worshipable master of
the r Chaitanya sampradya. Kavirj Goswm was a very
high standard Vaiava, but still he was very humble and
tolerant. In his r Chaitanya-charitmta he said,
44 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

jagi mdhi haite mui se ppiha
purera ka haite mui se laghiha

mora nma une yei tra puya kaya

mora nma laya yei tra ppa haya

ye ge paaye, tre karaye nistra

(r Chaitanya-charitmta: di-ll, 5.205-209)

I am more sinful than Jagi and Mdhi and even lower

than worms in stool. Anyone who hears my name loses
the benefit of his pious activities. Anyone who utters my
name becomes sinful. Who in this world but Nitynanda
Prabhu could show His mercy to such an abominable
person as me? Although I am without a doubt the most
fallen and abominable, I have taken shelter of Nitynanda
Prabhus lotus feet, and He has embraced me, and given
all spiritual wealth to me. Preme matta Nitynanda, He is
always intoxicated with Ka-prema and Gaura-prema
and He is not considering who is good or who is bad.
If anyone will fall down before His lotus feet He will give
His full mercy to him and he will receive Ka-prema.
That is the style of Nitynanda.
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 45

Exalted by Mercy
When Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm came to Vndvan he
found the association of hundreds of Vaiavas following
the line of Chaitanya Mahprabhu. All the Vaiavas
requested Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm to narrate the
Pastimes of Chaitanya Mahprabhu. Previously many
Vaiavas had written about Mahprabhus character
and teachings but when they heard from Ka Ds
Kavirj Goswm all the Vaiavas in Vndvan received
very, very new light. Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm gave
completely unique meanings of lokas from rmad-
Bhgavatam and the new light about Mahprabhus
divine feelings in His final Pastimes which no one before
could express. When the Vaiavas of Vndvan heard
such exclusive description of Mahprabhus character
they were astonished. By the grace of Nitynanda
Prabhu and by the mercy of Rpa Goswm, Raghunth
Ds Goswm and Santan Goswm, Ka Ds Kavirj
Goswm was so exalted in Vndvan at that time.
Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm had heard from
Raghunth Ds Goswm about the final Pastimes of
r Chaitanya Mahprabhu. In Pur Dhm, Raghunth
Ds Goswm stayed with Mahprabhu and observed
everything about the character of r Chaitanyadev. rla
Rpa Goswm also stayed with Mahprabhu in Pur
for some time and was fully empowered by Chaitanya
Mahprabhu. Raghunth Ds later came and stayed
with rla Rpa Goswm in Vndvan and heard from
him. So when Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm heard from
Raghunth Ds Goswm he received everything about
Chaitanya Mahprabhu, especially the final Pastimes of
the Lord.

Nitynandas Last Disciple

Still, the whole society of r Chaitanyadevs followers,
the six Goswms, all the Vaiavas in Vndvan, were
already extremely satisfied with Vndvan Ds hkurs
r Chaitanya-Bhgavat. Vndvan Ds hkur presented
unlimited glorification of r Chaitanyadevs Pastimes in
his r Chaitanya-Bhgavat. Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm
expressed the final Pastimes of Chaitanya-ll in his
r Chaitanya-charitmta but he never crossed the
prestige of Vndvan Ds hkur. He gave full honour
to Vndvan Ds hkur. Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm
wrote it many times in r Chaitanya-charitmta.

in Mmgchchhi and later by the order of Nitynanda
Prabhu went to Denua where he spent his final
days composing the r Chaitanya-Bhgavat. There he
revealed the Pastimes of Chaitanya Mahprabhu but
he was greatly attached to the Pastimes of Nitynanda
Prabhu and he first glorified Nitynanda Prabhu so
much. In an intoxicated mood of devotion he described
Nitynanda Prabhus Pastimes very widely. We are
surprised to hear it and we feel it to be a miracle. He
is revealing Mahprabhus Pastimes but he is glorifying
Nitynanda Prabhu so greatly. It is a miracle and we feel
his book could also be called the Nitynanda-Bhgavat.
We are so happy when we are reading the r Chaitanya-

Nitynanda Prabhus Exclusive Follower

By the grace of Vndvan Ds hkur we can understand

the Pastimes of both Nitynanda Prabhu and Mahprabhu.
But there are always a few who are not attracted by
Vndvan Ds hkurs r Chaitanya-Bhgavat. He has
glorified Nitynanda Prabhu in such an intoxicated mood
and he cannot tolerate those who have no faith in Lord
Nitynanda. Sometimes he appears very intolerant:

eta parihre o ye pp nind kare

tabe lthi mro tra irera upare
(r Chaitanya-Bhgavat di-ll, 9.225, 17.158)

If any sinful person disregards the glories of Lord

Nitynanda and dares criticise Him I will kick his head
with my left foot!
48 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

Prabhupd rla Saraswat hkur has explained

that by this expression Vndvan Ds hkur is giving
unfavourable persons a new chance to come to the
lotus feet of r Chaitanya Mahprabhu. If someone is
apparently mistreated by the Lords devotee that will
attract the special mercy of the Lord to them. Vndvan
Ds hkur fought with the demoniac brahmin society
and externally his Pastimes appear very hard. From
different corners he met many obstacles but he crossed
over everything through his devotional activity and
devotional mood and the special mercy of Nitynanda
Prabhu. Sometimes Nitynanda Prabhu even appeared
personally in the body of Vndvan Ds hkur and
bestowed mercy to all the conditioned souls.

Vysa of Chaitanya-ll
Vndvan Ds hkur glorified the Pastimes of
Chaitanya Mahprabhu greatly but he also mentioned
that in the future they would be more fully revealed. In
many places in r Chaitanya-Bhgavat Vndvan Ds
hkur mentioned, What I am expressing, it will be
fully expressed in the future when Vedavysa will appear.
I am not Vedavysa. Vedavysa will come and He will
give you the Pastimes of Chaitanya Mahprabhu. But
in r Chaitanya-charitmta Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm
said, No, Vndvan Ds hkur really is Vedavysa.
He has truly revealed Chaitanya-ll. What he has
willingly left unexpressed, the final Pastimes of
Mahprabhu, that I am describing here in r Chaitanya-
charitmta. So Vndvan Ds hkur said, Vysa will
come in the future. And Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm
said, Vndvan Ds hkur is Vedavysa. And we have
seen that Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm became Vysadeva:
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 49

he revealed the final Pastimes of Mahprabhu, he fulfilled

Vndvan Ds hkurs prediction.
By the mercy of rla Guru Mahrj we have got some
light from their expressions and the realisation that
both are Vedavysa. First is Vndvan Ds hkur, who
was mentioned by Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm as the
vysa of Chaitanya-ll. And second, Ka Ds Kavirj
Goswm, because he also expanded Chaitanya-ll and
very scrutinisingly and finely gave us the revelation of the
final portion of Chaitanya-ll. Vndvan Ds hkurs
style was overflooded with enthusiasm, and Ka Ds
Kavirj Goswms style was very fine and authentic.
I composed two lokas about the two vysas, rla Ka
Ds Kavirj Goswm and Vndvan Ds hkur, when
we published r Chaitanya-charitmta.

dsa-vndvana vande

I bow to Vndvan Ds hkur and Ka Ds Kavirj

Goswm. They have revealed the hidden Pastimes
of Lord Ka. Ka is known as Tri-yuga in rmad-
Bhgavatam because He only appears open in three ages
and He is covered in the kali-yuga (chhanna kalau yad
abhavas Tri-yugo tha sa tvamSB 7.9.38). In kali-yuga
He appears in a hidden way (chhanna) as His own devotee,
r Chaitanya Mahprabhu, the chhanna-Avatr, the
hidden Avatr. So Chaitanya-ll is the hidden Pastimes
50 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

of Lord Ka. And when the Lord appears in a hidden

way as Chaitanya Mahprabhu the Vedavysa of
His ll may also appear in that way, hidden
(chhanna).
So first, I bow down to Vndvan Ds hkur and
then to Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm because they both
appeared as Vedavysa. Vndvan Ds hkur was the
open (vyakta) Vedavysa and Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm
was the hidden (chhanna) vysa and together they
have revealed Chaitanya-ll. But, both are extremely
blessed by Nitynanda Prabhu! They are decorated
with the dust of Nitynanda Prabhus all-merciful lotus
feet (dvau Nitynandapdbja-karureu-bhuitau).
Vndvan Ds hkur was Nitynanda Prabhus own
disciple and Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm received the
all-merciful blessings from Nitynanda Prabhu. They
were both enriched with the blessings of Nitynanda
Prabhu. If Nitynanda Prabhu had not appeared no
one could understand Mahprabhu and no one would
have r Chaitanya-charitmta, r Chaitanya-Bhgavat;
nowhere would there be Mahprabhus whole life
history, Mahprabhus preaching programme,
Mahprabhus glorification. We have everything only
by the grace of Nitynanda Prabhu!
In this way Vndvan Ds hkur and rla
Kavirj Goswm blessed me. By their mercy we can
understand a little bit of Their glories. Vndvan Ds
hkur was very much intoxicated with the Pastimes
of Nitynanda Prabhu and Mahprabhu, but he had
unlimited love for Nitynanda Prabhu who has given
us our real property in Ka consciousness.
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 51

Nitynandas Legacy
Nitynanda Prabhu lived in Rha-dea and preached
Ka consciousness. When Nitynanda Prabhu went
to Gaur Ds Paits house in Kln He met with
Gaur Ds Pait and his brother Sryya Ds Sarkhel.
They knew Nitynanda Prabhu and were very happy
to serve Him. Nitynanda Prabhu saw that Sryya
Ds had two daughters and said, Please make an
arrangement, I want to marry them. Their father was
very happy that Nitynanda Prabhu Himself wanted
to marry his daughters, Vasudhdev and Jahnavdev.
After Nitynanda Prabhus Pastimes Jahnavdev took a
leading part in the sampradya of Chaitanya Mahprabhu.
She became a Guru and travelled like a Queen. Everyone
respected her spiritual representation of Nitynanda
Prabhu and she initiated many devotees. She was
the guest of honour at Narottam Ds hkurs grand
festival in Khetur-dhm. Vasudhdev had one son
named Vrachandra. He was initiated by Jahnavdev
and he came to control the whole society of Chaitanya
Mahprabhus sampradya. He glorified Nitynanda
Prabhu and Mahprabhu in a very grand way, he spread
Their glories more widely than They did. His preaching
was extremely liberal and he was even more merciful
that Nitynanda Prabhu Himself. He did not look at any
faults of anyone and always bestowed his mercy upon
all. During his time in Bengal there were many Buddhist
monks and Vrachandra transformed them into devotees
of Gaurga Mahprabhu. He brought thousands and
thousands of people to the lotus feet of Mahprabhu
during his Pastimes. So, take the lotus feet of Nitynanda
Prabhu! He bestows His mercy not only on His own
generation, but He bestows even more divine mercy
through His followers like His son Vrachandra Prabhu.

The Lotus Feet of Niti

Narottam Ds hkur also received Nitynanda Prabhus
full mercy and he distributed that widely. Narottam Ds
hkur was a prince in Bengal who became a servitor
of his Guru, Lokanth Ds Goswm in Vndvan.
Narottam Ds hkur left everything to take shelter of
the Lord. His expression was, By Nitynanda Prabhus
blessings it is possible to leave all mundane attachments.
Narottam Ds hkur took the rudder of the ship of
Nitynanda Prabhu along with Vrachandra Prabhu.
His preaching was so glorious. Still we are seeing that
by the preaching of Narottam Ds hkur everyone in
Maipur and Assam sings the glories of Nitynanda
Prabhu and Mahprabhu. All of Bengal was influenced
by his preaching, and by Nitynanda Prabhus mercy so
many became Vaiavas and chanted the Holy Name of
the Lordthe Hare Ka Mahmantra.
Narottam Ds hkur, Lochan Ds hkur and other
devotees composed many songs about Nitynanda
Prabhu. Narottam Ds hkurs song Niti-pada-kamala
is a very general but very beautiful song. It is short and
very simply expressed but it is very palatable and gives
us our main conception about Nitynanda Prabhu.
If you read and try to understand the meaning you will
understand the truth about Nitynanda Prabhu.

A King-Maker
We have also seen the influence of r Nitynanda
Prabhu in the life of our rla Guru Mahrj, rla
Bhakti Rakak rdhar Dev-Goswm Mahrj. Without
Nitynanda Prabhus blessings upon him we would not
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 53

have received the mercy of rla Guru Mahrj. After

rla Bhakti Siddhnta Saraswat hkur there was
quarrel in the Gauya Mah. rla Guru Mahrj tried
to cooperate with his good friend Vsudev Prabhu, who
became the head of the mission, and Kuja Bbu, the
secretary of rla Bhakti Siddhnta Saraswat hkur,
who he respected so much.
Finally many of the leading devotees of rla Bhakti
Siddhnta Saraswat hkur withdrew from the
missionary activities of the Gauya Mah and rla Guru
Mahrj was the last to leave. But rla Guru Mahrj did
not want to take any disciples. He had two reasons. One
was that Vsudev Prabhu was his very close friend. And
second, he preached very widely and successfully in the
time of his Guru Mahrj, rla Saraswat hkur, and
he wanted to spend the last portion of his life practising
Ka consciousness, reading r Chaitanya-charitmta
and rmad-Bhgavatam; he wanted to stay alone.
He had no enthusiasm to make disciples for himself.
rla Guru Mahrj lived in a rented room near the banks
of the Ganges. He would spend his days bathing in the
Ganges, doing Tulas-sev and maintaining a garden for
the worship of his Govardhan-ila, reading, writing and
chanting.
All of his Godbrothers were searching for him for
maybe one or two years until finally someone saw him
bathing in the Ganges. They all came and forcefully
requested rla Guru Mahrj, We need your association.
We will make another institution and you will be the head.
rla Guru Mahrj said, No, I wont take disciples. If I take
disciples others will think I am very enthusiastic to take
disciples. I came away from the Gauya Mah and I do not
want to preach again. I want to spend my last life alone.
54 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

rla Guru Mahrj had resolved not to take disciples,

like Lokanth Ds Goswm. He simply wanted to practise
for the rest of his life. They pressured rla Guru Mahrj
so much and finally he told them, I do not want to be a
king in society. I will not be a king, but I can make a king.
I can serve in the capacity of a king-maker. And he gave
sannys to many of his Godbrothers and they accepted
disciples and started missions under his guidance. But
rla Guru Mahrj lived with a few brahmchrs and
from time to time would visit the auspicious birthplaces
of the eternal associates of rman Mahprabhu.

The Order of Nitynanda Prabhu

Then one day rla Guru Mahrj went to Ekachakr

Dhm, the birthplace of r Nitynanda Prabhu.
rla Guru Mahrj said he went to Ekachakr to take
the mercy of Nitynanda Prabhu. He offered his full
daavat pram at the lotus feet of Nitynanda Prabhu
and prayed, O Nitynanda Prabhu, please give Your
mercy to me. Then rla Guru Mahrj heard, You
have the wealth of the mercy of Mahprabhu in your
heart. You have so much spiritual property but you do
not want to give that to others. That is not good! Why are
you asking for My mercy? If you want the wealth of My
blessings then distribute your wealth to others and then
you can take more from Me.
rla Guru Mahrj was surprised and thought, Yes,
it is no doubt that I have received some wealth from rla
Bhakti Siddhnta Saraswat hkur. rla Guru Mahrj
reflected deeply on this and then decided he would now
very cautiously accept a few disciples to fulfil his debt
to his Guru Mahrj and Nitynanda Prabhu. Actually,
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 55

this is why there are not so many disciples of rla Guru

Mahrj. He accepted those who approached him just to
satisfy Nitynanda Prabhu by acting on His order.

Dayl Niti! Dayl Niti!

We have seen rla Guru Mahrj show us that he is
always depending on the mercy of Nitynanda Prabhu.
Up to his last days when rla Guru Mahrj was in his
zone, upstairs in his room or on his veranda, he was
always chanting, Dayl Niti! Dayl Niti! Always his
consciousness was under Nitynanda Prabhus mercy,
and he was always thinking of Nitynanda Prabhu.
He forgot his position, everything, he was only asking
for the mercy of Nitynanda Prabhu, chanting, Dayl
Niti! Dayl Niti! Dayl Niti!
When rla Guru Mahrj would show sickness, his
servant Gaura-Ka Prabhu would try to give rla
Guru Mahrj some relief. He thought only Harinm
could help and would offer rla Guru Mahrj his japa
ml. He would ask, Shall I give you your chanting
beads? You will get some relief.
Guru Mahrj replied, No, no, no, give these
chanting beads to Govinda Mahrj. My only hope is
Dayl Niti! It was very clear. He was always calling
Dayl Niti! Dayl Niti! Lastly Guru Mahrj was
completely attached to Nitynanda Prabhus merciful
glance. This was a miracle for me. Prabhupd Saraswat
hkur gave rla Guru Mahrj exclusive charge of the
Rpnuga line, but rla Guru Mahrj said that without
Nitynanda Prabhu you will not be able to enter that
line. After entering you can get everything, but you will
not gain entrance without Nitynanda Prabhus mercy.

The Power to Rescue

rla Bhaktivinod hkur expressed in one song,
dayl niti chaitanya bole nch re mr man
nch re mr man, nch re mra man
apardha dre jbe, pbe prema-dhan
apardher-vichra to ni re
(Gtvalr Nma-krttan 2.1-2)
O my mind, just dance! O my mind, just dance! O my
mind, please dance, chanting, Dayl Niti Chaitanya!
When you become offenceless you will obtain the
treasure of love of God. But in these Names of Chaitanya
and Niti there is no consideration of offences!
I once asked rla Guru Mahrj, How is it possible
that there is no consideration of offences in the Names
of Chaitanya and Niti? rla Guru Mahrj answered,
To some extent it depends on our realisation, but
atapatra vedha nyya, a needle can pierce through one
hundred leaves within a second. The Names of Niti
and Chaitanya have the power to rescue us so quickly
that the time it takes for us to be actually rescued is not
countable. In this way rla Guru Mahrj explained.

Nitynanda Prabhur Gurudev

Everything is coming by the grace of r Nitynanda

Prabhu. Because our Guru Mahrj has shown such
deep attachment to Nitynanda Prabhus lotus feet we
feel that, and we are feeling rla Guru Mahrj to be the
incarnation of Nitynanda Prabhu. Many things about
Nitynanda Prabhus Pastimes are written in the books,
and written in the hearts of the devotees. The Scripture
The Pastimes of r Nitynanda Prabhu 57

confirms that Gurudev is always non-different from

Nitynanda Prabhu, that Nitynanda-tattva is Guru-
tattva. Even when Guru is Rdhr, there also we
can see Nitynanda Prabhus mercy coming for others.
Nitiyer koru habe, Braje Rdh-Ka pbe, dharo Nitiyer
chara du khni. Nitynanda Prabhu is the non-different
form of r Chaitanya Mahprabhu. But without the
mercy of Nitynanda Prabhu no one will get the mercy
of Chaitanya Mahprabhu. And without Chaitanya
Mahprabhu, no one will get entrance into r r Rdh-
Kas Pastimes. If you want to serve Ka under the
guidance of Rdhr then you must surrender to
Nitynanda Prabhu. By the mercy of Nitynanda Prabhu
you will receive liberation, and not only liberation,
prema-bhakti. Nitynanda Prabhu will give you entrance
into Vndvan, a visa to Vraja Dhm. Only then will
you be able to enter. If you want that, then you must be
surrendered to Nitynanda Prabhu, and then in the very
easiest way it will come to you. This is the easiest and
only procedure to get the mercy of Lord Ka.
We are very fortunate souls because we heard the
divine Name of Nitynanda Prabhu and we are following,
as possible by us, Nitynanda Prabhus line. That is most
clean and clear for the conditioned souls. We will get
everything by the grace of Nitynanda Prabhu and His
associates. I must say to everyone: take shelter of the
lotus feet of Nitynanda Prabhu and you will have no
fear from anywhere. We are all fallen souls and our only
hope is the mercy of Nitynanda Prabhu.

58 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

If anyone wants to leave mundane attachment and

defeat my, if anyone wants Ka-prema and Ka-
bhakti, they must worship Nitynanda Prabhus lotus
feet.
Nitynanda Prabhu is more merciful than Mahprabhu.
Mahprabhus conception was spread mainly by
Nitynanda Prabhu. He has given everythingfull-
fledged Ka consciousnessto everyone. Actually
Nitynanda Prabhus full mercy is within sakrttan.
The whole world is chanting the Holy Namethe Divine
Name of Lord Ka, the transcendental sound vibration
form of the Lord, the Hare Ka Mahmantraby
His grace.
Here is one thing to understand: depending on your
own position you will feel if you have Nitynanda
Prabhus mercy or not. If you will feel that within you,
then you will be fully satisfied. By the grace of Nitynanda
Prabhu you will get everything. I pray to rla Guru
Mahrj that he will mercifully give us the shelter of
His lotus feet. What can I say more!

the magnanimous Lord Nitynanda has opened up the
Marketplace of the Holy Name, meant for the deliverance
of all fallen souls.

Lord Gaurga, O brothers, I beg these three requests of
you: Chant Ka!, worship Ka, and teach others
about Ka.
apardha-nya hoye laha ka-nma

(3) Being careful to remain free of offences, just take the
holy name of Lord Ka. Ka is your mother, Ka is
your father, and Ka is the treasure of your life.

duties only in relation to Lord Ka. The showing of
compassion to other souls by loudly chanting the Holy
Name of Ka is the essence of all forms of religion.

The Divine Form of
r Nitynanda Prabhu
r Chaitanya Charitmta: di-ll, 5.181-197
by rla Ka Ds Kavirj Goswm

naihi-nikae jhmaapura nme grma

th svapne dekh dil nitynanda-rma

Near the town of Naihi, in the village of Jhmaapur,

Lord Nitynanda Rma appeared to me in a dream.

daavat haiy mi painu pyete

nija-pda-padma prabhu dil mora mthe

I fell at His feet, offering my obeisances, and He then

placed His own lotus feet upon my head.

uha, uha bali more bale bra bra

uhi tra rpa dekhi hainu chamatkra

Arise! Arise! He told me again and again. Upon rising,

I was astonished to see the beauty of His divine form.

yma-chikkaa knti, praka arra

skt kandarpa, yaichhe mah-malla-vra

He had a bright, whitish complexion. He was seven feet

tall and had a strong, stout figure like that of a great
wrestler. His exalted beauty was just like that of Lord
Balarm.

84 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

suvalita hasta, pada, kamala-nayna

paa-vastra ire, paa-vastra paridhna

He had very pleasantly formed hands, arms and legs,

and eyes like lotus flowers. He wore silk cloth and a silk
turban on His head.

suvara-kuala kare, svargada-vl

pyete npura bje, kahe pupa-ml

He wore golden earrings on His ears, golden armlets and

bangles. He wore tinkling ankle bells on His feet and a
flower garland around His neck.

chandana-lepita-aga, tilaka suhma

matta-gaja jini mada-manthara payna

His body was anointed with sandalwood pulp, and

He was nicely decorated with tilaka. His intoxicated
movements surpassed those of a dancing elephant.

koi-chandra jini mukha ujjvala-varaa

dimba-bja-sama danta tmbla-charvaa

His face was more effulgent than millions upon millions

of moons, and His teeth resembled pomegranate seeds
because of His chewing betel.

preme matta aga hine-vme dole

ka ka baliy gambhra bola bale

His body swayed to and fro, absorbed in ecstasy, and He

chanted Ka, Ka in a deep voice.

The Glories of r Nitynanda Prabhu 85

priada-gae dekhi saba gopa-vee

ka ka kahe sabe saprema vee

He moved like an intoxicated lion with a strong, knotted

bamboo stick in His hand. On all four sides His devotee-
associates, dressed like cowherd boys, surrounded His
lotus feet like a swarm of bumblebees and chanted
Ka, Ka, absorbed in ecstatic love.

ig v bjya keha, keha nche gya

sevaka yogya tmbla, chmara hulya

Some of them played horns and flutes, and others danced

and sang. Some of them offered betel nuts, and others
waved chmara fans about Him.

nitynanda-svarpera dekhiy vaibhava

Thus I saw the opulence of Lord Nitynanda Svarp.

His wonderful form, qualities and Pastimes are all
transcendental manifestations.

nande vihvala mi, kichhu nhi jni

tabe hsi prabhu more kahilena v
I was overwhelmed with transcendental ecstasy, not
knowing anything else. At that time Lord Nitynanda
smiled and spoke to me as follows.

re re kadsa, n karaha bhaya

vndvane yha,th sarva labhya haya

O my dear Ka Ds, do not be afraid. Go to Vndvan,

for there you will attain all things.
86 r r Nitynanda Mahimmtam

eta bali preril more htasni diy

After saying this, He directed me toward Vndvan
by waving His hand. Then He disappeared with His
associates.

mrchchhita ha-iy mui painu bhmite

svapna-bhaga haila, dekhi, hachhe prabhte

I fainted and fell to the ground, my dream broke, and

when I regained consciousness I saw that morning had
come.

ki dekhinu ki uninu, kariye vichra

prabhu-j haila vndvana yibra

I considered what I had seen and heard, and concluded

that Lord Nitynanda Prabhu had ordered me to go to
Vndvan at once.

sei kae vndvane karinu gamana

That very second I immediately started for Vndvan,

and by Lord Nitynanda Prabhus mercy I reached there
in great happiness.

jaya jaya nitynanda, nitynanda-rma

yhra kpte pinu vndvana-dhma

All glory, all glory to Lord Nitynanda Rma, by whose

mercy I have attained shelter in the transcendental abode
of Vndvan!
