Topic: Homemade SlimeMiddle School Physical Science
Objectives: Students will compare the differences between physical properties and chemical properties as they observe how the different components used in making slime are applied. Procedures: I will show my class the youtube video of how to make homemade slime using three ingredients, which are shampoo, salt, and shaving foam. Also, I will introduce the students to a Symballo in which I have saved links that they can look up different slime making procedures and other add in ingredients such as glitter, food coloring, essential oils (for smell). ( I will have these extra ingredients at their disposable if needed.) Next will be the Concept Board: The students will be placed in groups of three and they will critically think collaboratively about which images, ideas, and strategies they would like to use in order to make the best slime within their group. Each group will design a collage of these images and ideas. They will use the board to gather their content in which they will search for content to ultimately get the consistency to resemble a form of slime. They will be graded on collaboration, on slime texture, on overall appearance, and on their summarizing how they achieved their overall goal of making slime. (presenting to class) Their presentation will include them describing how their ingredients started out as physical properties (shampoo, foam, and salt) yet when combined together these elements were now changed into chemical properties. (Physical Properties can be observed and they are measured in terms of appearance, color, odor to name a few, while chemical properties are observed by a reaction to elements changing the original matter. Materials needed: 1. small bowl for each group of three 2. spoons for each group 3. inexpensive shampoo 4. kosher salt 5. foam shaving cream Extras: (optional) glitter, food coloring, essential oils Louisiana Common Core Curriculum Standards: K-12 Physical Science PHYSICAL PROPERTIES VS. CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Performance Expectation: Use the technology, explanation, and ingredients given to create the substance slime. CLARIFICATION STATEMENT: Physical Science: Physical properties of matter will be introduced such as the basic ingredients to create a slime based material. Chemistry: Chemical properties of matter will be formed due to the combination of all the physical properties; the elements will be altered/changed. Science & Engineering Practices: 1. Discussing the differences between the two properties: physical and chemical 2. Expanding and using technology: once the video and symballo links are viewed, building on the elements of how to construct a chemical reaction and thus make the connection of physical and chemical properties 3. Organizing material for clarity 4. Interpreting the supplies given to formulate a satisfactory outcome 5. Measuring proportions 6. Engaging in group discussion 7. Evaluating how to proceed once objective is delivered 8. Using ratio combinations to analyze the appropriate measurements that need to be taken Disciplinary Core Ideas: Structure and Properties of Matter: All the materials will be identified as either physical or chemical. Also, they will describe why it is either property. For example, the shampoos description would be it is a liquid substance, white, smells nice while the chemical property would be to explain the change when mixed with multiple elements how it can be described as a chemical property. Related Concepts: The end result should be observed, analyzed, and evaluated to perceive whether the experiment was a success based on the objective and topic of the day.
