Psychoanalysis also refers to the psychoanalytic therapy itself, ie, to a set of procedures and
therapeutic for the treatment of psychic conflicts techniques. Finally, "psychoanalysis" can
also refer to the psychoanalytic method, research method that has been applied far beyond
individual clinical psychology, the analysis of cultural phenomena, such as ethnology and
anthropology (among other disciplines). The development of psychoanalysis is permanent
in these three areas by researchers and clinicians, although it should be noted that such
segmentation of the psychoanalytic field can not be anything other than a descriptive
flowcharting, and realizes in any case the structure of psychoanalysis where theory and
practice are linked without being able to give one without the other. Freud argued that one
of the glories of psychoanalysis was a coincidence research and treatment, although it
clarifies that the technique differs both. Modern psychoanalysis is characterized by
theoretical, methodical, therapeutic pluralism. If psychoanalysis can be considered a
scientific theory is an issue in academic and professional circles remains controversial.
Freud's classic definition includes, according to summary of Jean Laplanche and Jean
Bertrand Pontalis, the following three aspects:
C) A set of psychological and psychopathological theories that the data provided by the
psychoanalytic method of investigation and treatment are systematized.
