1. Saturated steam at atmospheric pressure condenses on a 2-cm tube whose surface is maintained at 340K.
Determine the rate of condensation and the heat transfer coefficient for the case of 1.5 m long tube
oriented vertically
2. The condenser of a steam power plant operates at a pressure of 7.8kPa. Steam at this pressure on the outer
surfaces of horizontal pipe through which cooling water circulates. The outer diameter of the pipe is 3 cm
and the outer surfaces if the pipes are maintained at 300C (a) Determine the rate of heat transfer to the
cooling water circulating in the pipe. (b) Determine also the rate of condensation of steam per unit length of
a horizontal pipe. (c) Repeat the preceeding problem for the case of 12 horizontal tubes arranged in an a
rectangular array of 3 tubes high and 4 tubes wide.
3. Water is being boiled at 1 atm abs pressure in a jacketed kettle with steam condensing in the kettle at
115.60C. the inside diameter of the kettle is 0.656m and the height is 0.984m. the bottom is slightly curved
but will be assumed to be flat. Both the bottom and the sides up to the height of 0.656m are jacketed. The
kettle surface for heat transfer is 3.2mm stainless steel with a k of 16.27 W/mK. The condensing steam
coefficient hi inside the jacket is estimated as 10200 W/mK. Predict the boiling heat transfer coefficient ho
for the bottom surface of the kettle.

1. Calculate the heat transfer coefficient, the rate of heat transfer and the mass flowrate during stable film
boiling of water at 1 atm from a 0.742cm diameter horizontal stainless steel tube. The water is saturated at
1000C the tube surface is 1120C. Repeat the problem considering that the film boiling water is from 0.816cm
diameter spherical stainless steel.
2. Determine the view factors associated with an enclosure formed by two spheres.
3. An aluminum thin sheet with an emissivity of 0.1 on both sides is placed between two very large parallel
plates that are maintained at uniform temperatures of T1=800K and T2=500K respectively and have
emissivities 1=0.2 and 2=0.7 respectively. Determine the net rate of radiation heat transfer between two
plates per unit surface area of the plate and compare the results to that without the shield. Calculate also
the temperature of the shield.
