Grammar Points
Today’s grammar point is -te moraeru, “to be able to have someone do something for [me]”. This construc-
3 tion is similiar to -te morau, where morau acts as an auxiliary meaning “someone will do something for
[me]”; however, in today’s construction, morau is in it’s potential form -moraeru1. This construction is used
when asking if someone can do something for you.
The more polite version of this construction is -te itadakeru, which uses the potential form of the verb ita-
daku - humble language for morau.
1
Morau is a class one verb used to express that the speaker, or someone in the speaker’s “group” receives
something from someone who has a lower status than the receiver. As morau is a class one verb, the poten-
tial is formed by replacing the u syllable with the e syllable and appending ru. The potential form, moraeru,
is then a class two verb.
