Displacement Current (or Maxwells Displacement Current)

The complete definition of current is this : An electric current is that which produces magnetic field.
When capacitor is being charged, the charge on the capacitor plates increases and there is changing electric
field in the space between the plates of capacitor. The changing electric field between the plates of capacitor
produces magnetic field so it is equivalent to electric current. This is called displacement current ID .
Although the changing electric field is not an electric current but it has same effect in producing magnetic
dE
field. For this reason, Maxwell called the terrm 0 the displacement current.
dt
dE
It is given by ID 0 .................................................(i)
dt
dE
= time rate of change of electric flux between the plates of capacitor
dt

T
If steady current flows in the circuit then displacement current is equal to conduction current.i.e ID=IC

Maxwell combined the laws of electricity and magnetism to give the theory of e.m waves. According
CM

to him, accelerated electric charges, such as oscillatory charges, produce e.m waves. Maxwell was
the first to pridict E.M wave.
Ampere-Maxwells Circuital law-
A

Maxwell explained that Amperes law is valid only for steady current or when electric field does not change
with time. Maxwell assumed that some sort of current must be flowing between the capacitor plates during
charging prosses. This current is named as displacement current id .
Hence modified Amperes circuital law or Ampere-Maxwells circuital law is as follows

B. dl i0 c id
d E
or B. dl 0 ic 0
dt
from (i)

ic = conduction current i.e current due to flow of charge in the conductor

dE
id=displacement current i.e current due to changing electric field between the plates of capacitor = 0

When a high voltage is applied across metallic plates,

these plates get discharged by sparking across the

narrow gap. The spark will give rise to oscillation
which in turn send out electromagnetic waves. The succession of sparks send out a train of such waves

(iii) Ulrtaviolet rays - Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is produced by special lamps and very hot bodies. The
sun is an important source of ultraviolet light. But fortunately, most of it is absorbed in the ozone layer in
ST

the atmosphere. UV radiation is absorbed by ordinary glass. Welders wear special glass goggles or face
masks with glass windows to protect their eyes from large amount of UV produced by welding arcs.
these rays are used in LASIK (Laserassisted in situ keratomileusis) eye surgery. UV lamps are used to

(iv) Visible rays - Visible light emitted or reflected from objects around us. Our eyes are sensitive to this
range of wavelengths. Source of these waves are Atoms and molecules when electrons are

excited. These waves are used in Optics and OpticalInstruments, Vision, photography, etc.

(v) Infrared waves - Infrared waves are produced by hot bodies and molecules. These waves are used in
Industry, medicinastronomy, night vision device, grehouse, revealing secret writings onancient walls, etc.

(vi) Microwave - Microwaves (short-wavelength radio waves) are produced by special vacuum tubes
(called klystrons, magnetrons and Gunn diodes). Due to their short wavelengths, they are suitable for the
radar systems used in aircraft navigation. In microwave ovens, the frequency of the microwaves is
selected to match the resonant frequency of water molecules so that energy from the waves is transferred
efficiently to the kinetic energy of the molecules. This raises the temperature of any food containing water

(vii) Radio waves - Radio waves are produced by the accelerated motion of charges in conducting wires.
or by Oscillatingelectronic circuits They are used in radio and television communication systems.
