1. (a) Define the term communication (2mks).

Communication is a process by which meaning is exchanged between individuals or an


individuals and a; group via a communication system of symbols, signs and behavior.

(b). with aid of diagram, explain the communication process highlighting key elements.

Elements are the components of communication which are:-

i. People- these are participants in communication process both as source or sender and
receivers of message. The sender initiates the intended message and puts it into a code
(ancode) while the receivers are people who would decode interpret the message.

Both roles occur simultaneously

ii. Message- this is the content of the interaction which may be oral or non-oral .It is the
idea, thought or the feelings that one communicates.
iii. Channels this is the means by which the message moves from the source to receiver
.Also referred to as the medium of communication and it may be written or visual.
iv. Feedback- this is the receivers verbal or non-verbal response to the message from the
source . feedback is part of communication situation although sometimes it may not ;be
direct and immediate .Sometimes we have zero feedback were we get Non Response

(c). Discus any five principals of communication

i. Communication is inescapable means communication is always occurring in human


life at various levels for example , interpersonal i.e. through mediation, planning etc and
lat interpersonal with others
ii. Communication is irreversible once something has been communicated it cannot be
taken back .communication cannot be actively ;erased
iii. Communication Is dynamic-all elements in communication process interact with each
other and effect each other as communication processes
iv. Communication is complicated it is complex in several respects, as it involves choices
about multiple of a message and also because of different perceptions that we may have
about the same issue.
v. Every communication situation has a counted and relationship dimension-this means
that kind of information shared between communications is determined by the kind of
relationship that exists between them. Likewise, the relationship influences the kind of
information to be shared.

Describe five types of listening.(10mks)

i. Active listening / comprehensive listening we engage in this type when we want to


understand in details and get all the facts. We engage in this when listening to lecture,
when listening to instructions.
ii. Passive listening this is concentrating at every low level and getting very little of what
is being said.
iii. Discriminative listening- this is when we want to single out one particular sound from
noisy environment such bas listening to a friend in crowded room.
iv. Reflective listening refers to attentively listening to speakers actual words tone of
sound emotions displayed. This is closely related to imaginative listening involved in the
bad adjudication of presentations such as drama.
v. Critical listening this is listening that analysis evaluates, critiques or challenge a
speakers message by evaluating its accuracy, meaningfulness and utility.

Q (1) Describe any five types of reading.

i. Scanning this technique is used when looking for name, definition or any other piece of
information in a test in using the technique you move your eyes quickly over the text to
find a particular words or phases that are relevant to specific information you are looking
for.
ii. Skimming this is fast reading technique in order to get a general idea about the
information in text. Its useful when trying to decide a book in library which is relevant
for your studies when previewing books before detailed reading and refreshing your
understanding of a text having a read it.
iii. Word by word reading this style is used by beginners when reading for first time in
attempt to understand each word or present time.
iv. Light listening this kind is applied when reading newspaper or novel for leisure. Does
not involve any critical assessment or appraisal of material one is reading.
v. Active or detailed reading- this is the technique used in serious study as it calls for
active involvement in the reading process.

We should always make notes and pick out important points of what we are reading by
highlighting and constantly review our summary to cheek on the understanding.

(b)Explain five note taking skills (10 mks)

i. Only choose the; miniports of \what you are listening to. You should not record all the
materials from the sources.
ii. Show the difference between the main points, supporting points and illustrations or
examples. This may be done by use of highlighting, through use of colors, understanding
or different types of bonds.
iii. Brevity is important in note taking. This is achieved by use of abbreviations where
possible symbols, sings, short forms.
iv. Use phrases but not compete sentences.
v. Number your items or put them in bulleted lists and make sure your leave a space in the
margins for additional notes.
