Topic: Legalizing Organ Selling
I. Introduction
a. Attention-Getter: The alarming number of people killed for black market organ
trade (Nicolae, 2017)
b. Thesis Statement: Legalizing the selling of organs is better than the current system
of donating organs because it will lessen exploitation in the black market and will
increase the supply of organs.
c. Credibility Statement: I thoroughly researched on the topic of legalizing the sale of
human organs, since this was one of my proposed topics in my pre-thesis subject.
d. Transition to the Body and Overview of the Body:
i. The three different main points that I will be discussing are the reasons why
I recommend the legalizing of the sale of human organs.
II. Body
a. The current practice of organ donation is not efficient.
i. According to Erin & Harris (2012) it is only donors that arent paid in the
process of transplanting organs. Surgeons, transplant coordinator and other
people that are involved are mostly paid, which is why some views are
geared towards the legalizing of selling of organs.
b. Legalizing organ selling will protect black market donors from exploitation in the
black market (De Castro, 2003).
i. Commodification of human organs is not something new, it is currently
happening in the black market.
ii. The black market is not regulated thus exploitation is experienced by black
market donors.
c. Legalizing organ selling will increase the supply of organs, which will save lives
(De Castro, 2003).
i. Back in 2002, the Department of Health (DOH) in the Philippines tried
resolving the problem relating the backdoor operations in procuring
organs. To be able to lessen these instances and avoid exploitation of
donors, the Philippine Organ Donation Program (PODP) developed a
gratuity package wherein a compensation was provided to the donors
(Padilla, 2009).
d. Transition to Conclusion: By legalizing the sale of human organs we (1) lessen the
exploitation in the black market, and (2) we increase the supply of organs.
III. Conclusion
a. Review of Main Point: The current practices of human organ donation were
discussed; part of it is the exploitation of the donors and the low of supply of organs.
b. Thesis restatement: The main points Ive discussed shows why human organ selling
should be legalized.
c. Closure: The persisting need of supply of organs for transplant and the existing
black market for organs are the reasons why selling of organs should be legalized
and heavily regulated. Through this, exploitations in the black market can be
avoided. Moreover, with a suggested heavily regulated system, the danger of
storing organs and doing the transplant can be lessened. Match donors and
recipients can also be treated in a safer environment and there could be an increase
in the supply of donors.
