Lesson Idea Name: Introduction to Functions

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): Algebra I 9th grade
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE9-12.F.IF.1 Understand that a function from one set (the input, called the domain) to another set (the
output, called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range, i.e. each
input value maps to exactly one output value. If f is a function, x is the input (an element of the domain), and
f(x) is the output (an element of the range). Graphically, the graph is y = f(x).

MGSE9-12.F.BF.1 Write a function that describes a relationship between two quantities.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Empowered Learner: Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and
demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improve their practice and to
demonstrate their learning on a variety of ways.
Computational Thinker: Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in
ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions.
Students break problems into component parts, extract key information, and develop descriptive
models to understand complex systems or facilitate problem-solving.
Global Collaborator: Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by
collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally.
Students use collaborative technologies to work with others, including peers, experts, or community
members, to examine issues and problems from multiple viewpoints.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The SRT will be used in two ways during class. First, the students will use their iPad (or phone or computer
if tablets are not available) to play the matching game individually to assess their knowledge of functions. This
will start our discussion on what students know and do not know about functions. We will first review the
definition of a function. Students will do Think-Pair-Share to discuss what they already know about functions.
To help them relate functions to their surroundings, we will use a real-world example of a function to guide

our class discussion (Write a function to describe the amount of money for h hours if you earn $11 per
hour). Students will discuss what numbers could be the input and what the resulting output would be, giving
us a definition for domain and range. Once students conceptually understand domain and range, students will
choose their groups of 3, write a sentence that could be represented as a function, write the corresponding
function, and identify the domain and range. Each group will write their sentence on the board and students
will then work in their groups to solve other groups problems. Once the groups finish, each group will teach
the class how to do their problem so students can check their work and identify any mistakes.
After the presentations, students will be grouped and complete the Quizlet Live activity.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
Assess prior knowledge Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) To illuminate common
misconceptions Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) Summative assessment of content knowledge Test preparation
Survey/Poll Discussion starter Homework collection Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

At the beginning of class, students will independently play the matching game using the created Quizlet q
questions. This will serve as a pre-assessment and should only take 2-3 minutes. The students will need an
iPad (or a phone or computer, if no iPads are available). The teacher will prepare the lesson while students
complete the pre-assessment.
For the post-lesson assessment, the students will be randomly grouped to complete the Quizlet Live
activity. The same matching questions from the beginning of class will be used. The students will randomly be
assigned to groups. Each student in the group will be given the same question and they must find the correct
answer on one of the iPads. The correct answer will only be on one group members iPad, so they must work
together to find the answers. The first team to get all 13 questions correct wins, but if groups miss a question,
they must restart. This activity may last up to 5 minutes depending on student comprehension and how often
students must restart. During this time, the teacher should be encouraging and lively. Also, the teacher would
help groups who are struggling and may need assistance to get started.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

Multiple choice (Matching) Multiple select True/False Yes/No
Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
Questions included on Weebly.
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
Yes No
Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
Yes
No
Why or why not?
At the beginning of class, students will complete the SRT individually through matching. The goal is to learn
how to do the problems throughout the lesson, so I would not display the answers after the initial activity. For
the team game, they have to get the correct answer to move on, so most students will get the right answers.
If there is class time left over, I will go over the questions with the class, but the technology itself will not be
revealing the answers after the activity.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the pre-assessment SRT, students will break-out into Think-Pair-Share and discuss what they know
about functions. (See what will happen BEFORE the SRT activity for what will happen BEFORE the post-
assessment SRT).
After the post-lesson SRT (Quizlet Live), we will discuss as a class which questions students struggled on. I
will use the instant feedback to go over commonly missed questions. I will identify any common
misconceptions I notice before class ends. This may lead to more discussion in the next class period.

How will the data be used?

The data that will be collected as a result of the Quizlet Live will give me and understanding of how well
students understand writing a function from a sentence, identifying the domain, and identifying the range. I
will get a holistic view rather than a student-by-student score report so that I can assess how the entire class
is performing. I will use the data to assess my students understand and determine how to proceed with the
next class period. It will also help me differentiate instruction. If students are struggling, then I may need to
spend an extra day explaining the concepts. Or, if some students are struggling and some are not, I might
consider doing function stations the next day to focus on helping those who are still confused.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I have not used Quizlet Live before, so I hope to learn how to best engage students collaboratively
without one student doing all the work. I hope this will engage the students in a fun, exciting way to
encourage them to show their understanding of the mathematics, rather than guess.
