CBS Primary School Travel Survey

Introduction
Using the criteria suggested to us by Waterman Moylan, a school wide survey of staff and students
was conducted during the 29th of March, 2017. The staff agreed to be surveyed during their break-
time (accordingly, not all staff could be surveyed due to supervision duties). It was agreed that the
results were representative of the staff as a whole. The student survey was conducted throughout
the school and is, therefore, clearly representative of the childrens experiences.

In both cases, questions were asked to ascertain the following:

1. Distance of their home from the school.


2. Most common mode of transport used to get to school.
3. In the case of those who used cars the most, the normal occupancy was requested.
4. The degree to which they would be interested in incentivised schemes for encouraging them
to walk/cycle/park and stride more often.

Summary of findings
Staff

a. A small majority of staff are not within walking/cycling distance of the school.
b. There is some scope for greater car-pooling amongst staff.
c. There is great support amongst staff for schemes to encourage alternatives to single-
occupancy vehicles as the primary mode of transport.
d. A reduction of a 15-30% reduction in staff car parking numbers should be targeted, under a
properly constituted Mobility Management Plan.

Students

a. Most children within 1km of the school do walk to school.


b. Most children in the other two distance categories travel by car. Those engaged in park and
stride were included in this category.
c. There is clear scope for improvement on the cycling front for children who live 1-4km from
the school. There is a requirement for an improvement in cycle lanes leading to the school,
cycle storage facilities on site and normalisation of cycling within school culture.
d. Permanent incentivising schemes, under a contextualised Mobility Management Plan and
with structural support from the County Council has the most potential for success in
reducing traffic congestion on the New Road.
e. An example of one of the first priority targets for such a plan should be a reduction of car
use by 33% by this 1-4km category:
a. 56% of students surveyed live 1-4km away = 349
b. Assume incorrectly that all of the 21% cycling/walking rate comes from this distance
category, which leaves 276
c. 83% of children have surveyed as potentially responsive to incentive. Applying an
actual success rate of half this (41.5%) will yield an achievable first target of
switching 276 X 0.415= 115.
d. 115 is just over 1/3 of 349.
f. The MMP committee will use these and other survey results and data to develop a more
comprehensive picture of what is achievable.

Parents

a. The results on distance and mode of transport support those from the student
survey.
b. 94% of parents have said they will support the initiatives as laid out by a fully
contextualised mobility management plan (this is how the final question in the
survey was framed).
