Theory:

VAPOUR COMPRESSION REFRIGERATION SYSTEM

A vapour compression system is improved type of air refrigeration system in which suitable working
substance termed as refrigerant is used, it condensates and evaporates at temperature and pressure close
to atmospheric conditions. The refrigerants used for this purpose are ammonia, carbon dioxide, and sulphur
dioxide.
The refrigerant used does not leave the system, alternatively condensing and evaporating. In evaporation,
the refrigerant absorbs its latent heat from which it is used for circulating it around the cold chamber while
cost during it gives latent heat to the circulating water of the cooler. The VCS is thus latent heat pump as it
pumps its latent heat from brine end and delivers it to the cooler. It is generally used for all individual
purposes from small domestic refrigerator to a big air conditioning plant.

ADVANTAGES:
1. It has similar size for given capacity of refrigerator.
2. It has less running cost.
3. It is employed for large range of temperature.
4. The COP is quite higher.

1
DISADVANTAGES:
1. The initial cost is higher.
2. The leakage of refrigerant is difficult to avoid.

ESSENTIAL PARTS OF THE SYSTEM:

1. Compressor:
The low pressure and temperature of the vapour refrigerant from evaporator is drawn into the compressor
through IV or suction valve where it is compressed to high pressure and temperature. Refrigerant is
discharged into the condenser through delivery or discharge valve.

2. Condenser
It consists of coils of pipe in which high pressure and temperature vapour refrigerant gets cooled and
condensed. The refrigerant while running through the condenser gives up its latent heat to the surrounding
condensing medium which is normally air or water.

3. Receiver
The condensed liquid refrigerant from the condenser is stored in vessel known as receiver from where it is
supplied to the evaporator through the expansion valve.

4. Expansion Valve:
It allows the liquid refrigerant under high pressure and temperature to pass at a controlled rate after
reducing its pressure and temperature. Some of the refrigerants evaporate and pass through expansion
valve but their greater portion is vapourised in the evaporator at low pressures and temperatures.

5. Evaporator:
It consists of coils of pipe in which the liquid refrigerant at low pressure and temperature. In evaporation,
the liquid vapour refrigerant absorbs its latent heat of vapourisation from the medium which is to be cooled.

ANALYSIS OF VAPOUR COMPRESSION SYSTEM:

It depends upon:
1. Load on refrigerant plant in Tonnes.
2. Temperature of refrigerant.
3. Atmospheric temperature.
The temperature of refrigerant required and atmospheric conditions decide the temperature of the
refrigerant entering into the condenser and automatically it decides the pressure ratio.

Similarly, the working cycle is represented on T-S and P-h diagram, where the process 3-2 represents
superheating and 4-5 represents undercooling. The COP of this cycle increases as it approaches near to
the Carnot cycle. This is explained as follows:

The absorption of heat in evaporation and rejection of heat in the condenser are in the form of the latent
heat. This heat transfer is carried out by maintaining the temperatures differences as low as possible in
evaporator and condenser. By comparing with the refrigerant cycle where high temperature cycle is
necessary to carry out into compressor isolating it from the atmosphere. Irreversibility only exists in the
throttling process. The VCS approaches Carnot cycle as compared with air refrigeration system and COP
of VCS is higher than air refrigeration system.

5. Procedure:

I. Personal and General laboratory safety

1. Never eat, drink, or smoke while working in the laboratory.
2. Read labels carefully.

3. Do not use any equipment unless you are trained and approved as a user by your
Professor/Instructor.

4. Wear safety glasses or face shields when working with hazardous materials and/or equipment.

5. Wear gloves when using any hazardous or toxic agent.

6. Clothing: When handling dangerous substances, wear gloves, laboratory coats, and safety shield
or glasses. Shorts and sandals should not be worn in the lab at any time. Shoes are required when
working in the machine shops.

7. If you have long hair or loose clothes, make sure it is tied back or confined.

8. Keep the work area clear of all materials except those needed for your work. Coats should be hung
in the hall or placed in a locker. Extra books, purses, etc. should be kept away from equipment that

4
requires air flow or ventilation to prevent overheating.

9. Disposal - Students are responsible for the proper disposal of used material if any in appropriate
containers.

10. Equipment Failure - If a piece of equipment fails while being used, report it immediately to your lab
assistant or tutor. Never try to fix the problem yourself because you could harm yourself and
others.

11. If leaving a lab unattended, turn off all ignition sources and lock the doors.

12. Never pipette anything by mouth.

13. Clean up your work area before leaving.

14. Wash hands before leaving the lab and before eating.

I. Preparing the experiment

1. Observed Proper Safety Precaution measures, wear safety eye goggles, remove all laces, no
playing around during activity
2. Conduct a visual inspection of the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Base Model Unit to ensure
that it is in good working condition.

II. Start-up Procedure

1. Open the program for GUNT ET 915.07.
2. Switch the system on at the main switch
3. Enable the refrigerating circuit by opening the relevant solenoid valve (1 & 2)
3. Set the system to fresh air mode (1). Switch on the fan (12).
4. Switch on the condenser (4)
5. Observe the suction pressure if is not high and okay for start the compressor.
6. Switch on the Compressor.
7. Check P-h diagram if the cycle is stable
8. Then start logging the data.

In the graph shows the temperature was high due to the compressor but as it passes through the throttling valve the temperature
will reduced suddenly and drastically. Thus, us it is the throttling valve where the temperature of the refrigerant is reduced and it
is then able to produce the cooling effect in the evaporator of the refrigerator or the cooling coil of the air conditioner.

In this graph, it shows that there is increase and decrease of pressure it indicates that the pressure
enters in the throttling valve under the low and high side. The term "low side" is used to indicate the part of
the system that operates under low pressure, in this case the evaporator. The "high side" is used to indicate
the part of the system that operates under high pressure, in this case the condenser.

The picture above was a thermostatic expansion valve, which we are used in our experiment.

And in this picture it shows one of the components of thermostatic expansion valve, which are compressor,
condenser, receiver, filter driver, expansion valve, valves, pressure gage and the temperature.

22
In this picture the members were checking data that gathered in the system, and the system that we are
using was linked in the devices so that whatever the comes, it will directly recorded in the computer/system.

The group also check safety precautions by using goggles and checking the fire extinguisher
