the laity in Gods Church. If you can't
serve what you have been scheduled,
please give it your best effort to call an-
other minister, reader or server to cover
your mass. Phone numbers are listed on
the schedule that is sent out each month.
Going forward, please have all requests
for times emailed to Deacon Al by the
20th of the prior month. We will send a
reminder of this each month. We are very

On Mission: Fertile Soil In todays Gospel the parable of the sower

Jesus teaches us that while the Word of God is preached throughout the
world, it is most effective when it takes root in hearts that are fertile and
ready to bear good fruit. If the goal of On Mission for The Church Alive! is
to more effectively preach the Gospel and grow the Church, then we must
work now to prepare our hearts and help prepare the hearts of others to al-
low Gods Word to touch our hearts in new ways and spread the seeds of faith in our families,
in our parishes and in our communities. Consider joining or starting a bible study or faith-
sharing small group or attend a faith formation session at a nearby parish and nourish the faith

RCIA FOR MID-MON VALLEY

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a communal process of spiritual and educational
formation for adults who seek to become full members of the Roman Catholic Church. Once again
this year, the parishes of the mid-Mon Valley will be offering an RCIA program for Mary, Mother of
the Church in Charleroi, Our Lady of the Valley in Donora and St. Damien of Molokai in Mononga-
hela. All those interested in pursuing membership in the Church, in completing their sacraments of
initiation, or as a refresher for those already in the Catholic faith are encouraged to consider partici-
pation. The program will begin on Monday, October 2nd of this year. Interested persons from St.
Damien should contact Fr. Bill at the parish office for specific information.

In the Gospel the disciples had begun to
write Jesus off. Some were no longer walk-
ing with him. Jesus, however, responded to
this situation by noting the natural agricul-
tural process of failure and success. To hope
is to let God work in his own mysterious
fashion and not impose human restraints.
There are countless ways in which we may
develop hope and thereby cultivate mystery.
The Eucharist communicates this as well,
reflecting Jesus anxiety before his death and
communicating Jesus acceptance of the Fa-
thers mysterious plan for him. All who
share in the Eucharist confess that the paths,
rocks, and thorns of Jesus passion and death
are transformed into the abundant harvest of
the resurrection. The Eucharist articulates a
hope, but a hope based on Gods freedom to
act. The Eucharist asserts that to develop
hope is to cultivate mystery.
