What is priority public housing
assistance?
Generally, as an applicant for public housing assistance, you will
be placed on the wait list and allocated housing in the order in
which you apply. However, if you have an urgent housing need
and no other viable housing options but public housing, you
may apply for priority assistance. If approved for priority, you
may be offered housing ahead of turn on the wait list.
The grounds on which you may be eligible for priority
assistance are varied and can include:
a medical condition caused or aggravated by existing
accommodation or treatment is not available in your
current area
family or domestic violence
racial or other harassment
to reunite a child or children with family.
When assessing whether you are eligible for priority assistance,
the Housing Authority will take into account the following factors:
whether you have current debt or history of debt with the
Housing Authority
whether you have an unsatisfactory tenancy history such
as poor property standards and disruptive behaviour.
What is the time frame for priority
assistance?
You will be offered accommodation as soon as possible after
your priority application is approved, depending on your
housing needs and the availability of suitable accommodation.
The waiting time for priority housing will vary in different
zones and towns.
Offers of accommodation
on a priority basis
If you have been approved for priority assistance, the
accommodation offered may not necessarily be within your
zone of choice.
You may, therefore, need to consider accepting
accommodation that is not in your preferred location.
What is a valid offer?
A valid offer of accommodation is one that meets your
critical need but may not be in your preferred zone.
What if you decline a valid offer?
