ABSTRACT
Malaysia aspires to be a developed and high-income nation by 2020 in which the well-being of her
populations would be able to harness and utilize the rich and well-endowed natural resources through
educational transformation. The university also aspires to be world class in both the undergraduate and
post-graduate education in order to harness human capacity for socio-economic development. As the
country is also pursuing industrialisation conflicts are bound to occur between aspiration in the
knowledge-based fundamental studies such as biodiversity conservation, basic natural sciences and high
technology and biotechnology that is believed to be able to transform the socio-economic development of
the nation. Since 1985 the country had defined and outlined priorities in R & D based on some pillars that
include biodiversity conservation, high technology, nanotechnology and sustainable development,
amongst others. However, measures for sustainable natural resources and environment are not seriously
taken especially in sustaining research funds and research fellowship to aspiring young graduates. In the
1980s post-graduate studies has always addressed sustainable natural resources until recently the
country changed to incomes generated R & D based on technology transfer and neglecting the
fundamental studies which we are stronger and capable. While research funds have been reduced by the
government, funding opportunities from the industrial sectors are not forthcoming. The opportunities to
attract post-graduate students was impeded, foreign post-graduates students are also decreasing,
research laboratories are devoid of sophisticated instruments and molecular biological works are
becoming more expensive. Funds for field surveys and works to realize the potential of our natural
resources in ecotourism are also lacking. There must be a balance between basic or fundamental and
applied science in order to reduce resources footprints, efficient use of resources, reducing environmental
costs and changing patterns of consumerism of commodities. Current trends in post-graduate studies at
the Faculty of Science and Technology will be discussed in light of the impending future challenges.

Abstract
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are extraordinary events involving a wide group of marine and
freshwater microalgae. Harmful effects of these events can be in various forms: human
intoxications from contaminated seafood and drinking water; mortality of cultured and wild fishes
and shellfish; mortality of seabirds and marine mammals; and loss of amenities. The first
recorded HAB event in Malaysia was in 1976 in Sabah when the toxic marine dinoflagellate
Pyrodinium bahamense formed massive blooms in Sabah waters. This species produces toxins
that cause the deadly paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). Subsequently, PSP cases also
surfaced in Malacca, Kelantan and Pahang waters involving other dinoflagellate species. In the
last few years there have also been ciguatera fish poisoning cases, although so far these have
only been from imported fish. Just based on species presence, Malaysia also potentially could
be affected by amnesic shellfish poisoning and diarrheic shellfish poisoning. Monitoring of
shellfish toxicity poses a challenging problem for countries affected by HABs. For many years
and for many toxins, toxicity testing has relied heavily on the live mouse bioassay. However,
there is a strong international push to move away from live animal testing. Many efforts are
currently underway to develop alternative functional and analytical detection methods. There is
also sufficient evidence to show that HABs have increased geographically and also in intensity.
This has lead to the establishment of several international programmes aimed at better
understanding, prediction, management and mitigation of HABs. These include the HAB
programme of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC of UNESCO), the new
10-year GlobalHAB programme of the IOC and SCOR, as well as various programmes of the
IAEA, ICES, and PICES. It is clear that HAB research is a multi-dimensional problem that
requires expertise from various science, engineering, social, economic and medical disciplines.
The setting up of a national HAB programme would thus provide a good example of how a
multidisciplinary research programme could be established.

Abstract
Rafflesia is a genus of holoparasitic flowering plants that is well known as its members are
capable of producing the largest flowers in the world. To date, very little molecular information
has been published on these species. This, in part, is due to their limited access and rarity of
occurrence. Using advanced DNA sequencing technologies, we have successfully generated
genome and transcriptome sequence data from Rafflesia. The availability of these data allowed
us to glean valuable information from the genome and transcriptome using a repertoire of
bioinformatics tools. Results of these efforts offer a glimpse of genes involved in the pathways
and biological processes, and present an opportunity to generate essential information
underlying the biology of Rafflesia. The sequence data also provide a valuable resource for the
expansion of our knowledge on the genetic diversity of these species, which may contribute
towards the conservation efforts of this genus.

Abstract
The value of physical knowledge is taken as self-evident in most modern societies. However,
the scientific investigation of the natural world, primarily through fields such as physics,
astronomy, chemistry and biology, often competes and at times clashes with, the practical and
short term demands of politics and economy. At times of economic difficulties and political
tensions, investments into research and education in the pure sciences are increasingly
questioned, especially in terms of the usefulness of the pure sciences. This talk will deliberate
upon the question of the usefulness of the physics through selected examples taken from the
field of astronomy and astrophysics. The importance of adopting a broad perspective with
respect to ones own discipline complimenting technical competence will be argued by
highlighting how insights and innovations from the fields of physics (Newtonian gravity and
spectroscopy), material science (gravitational wave interferometers and space probe
construction materials) and nuclear science (radiocarbon dating and nucleosynthesis) have
each contributed to the progress of astronomical and astrophysical knowledge. This argument
rests on three points: epistemological, socio-political and practical. The implications of such a
position on the preparations of young scientists will be addressed through a brief survey of the
state of astronomy and astrophysics at UKM.

fenomena pertumbuhan IMC.

Abstract
All foods are functional to some extent because all foods provide taste, aroma and nutritive
value. However, foods are now being examined intensively for added physiologic benefits,
which may reduce chronic disease risk or otherwise optimize health. It is these research efforts
that have led to the global interest in the growing food category now recognized as functional
foods. Functional foods can be considered to be those whole, fortified, enriched or enhanced
foods that provide health benefits beyond the provision of essential nutrients when they are
consumed at efficacious levels as part of a varied diet on a regular basis. They represent one of
the most intensively investigated and widely promoted areas in the food and nutrition sciences
today. Linking the consumption of functional foods or food ingredients with health claims should
be based on scientific evidence being replicated, randomized, placebo-controlled, intervention
trials in animal and human subjects. However, not all foods on the market today that are
claimed to be functional foods are supported by enough solid data to merit such claims.
Research currently underway will reveal how a myriad of substances can be used as functional
food components. In some cases, advances are as simple as better understanding the role and
optimal levels of traditional nutrients, especially for specific subpopulations. It is a duty of a food
scientist to educate consumers that these foods and ingredients are not magic bullets or
panaceas for poor health habits.

Abstract. The air pollution index (API) is a common tool, which is often used for determining the quality of air
in the environment. In this study, a discrete-time Markov chain model (DTMC) is applied for describing the
stochastic behaviour of API data. The study reported in this paper is conducted based on the data collected
from Klang City in Malaysia for a period of three years (20122014). Based on the API data, we considered a
five-state Markov chain for depicting the five different state of the air pollution. We identified the Markov chain
is an ergodic Markov chain and determined the limiting distribution for each state of the air pollution. In
addition, we have identified the expected return time from one state to another. Based on the limiting
distribution and the return time, we found that the risk of occurrences for unhealthy events is small. However,
the risk remains notably troubling. Therefore, the standard of air quality in Klang falls within a margin that is
considered healthy for human beings.
