Project 2, Part 1 5E Write-Up

Introduction

My Aurasma lesson is an independent learning project for my students covering

genetics and gene inheritance. The material is provided to students in a notebook that

they will work through independently. Students work through this notebook using the

Aurasma app to get additional instructions, videos, definitions, and more. Any additional

materials, such as worksheets, are provided to students within the notebook as well.

Students will work through an entire lesson by the time they finish going through the

independent learning project notebook.

Standard Covered

SB3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to analyze how biological

traits are passed on to successive generations.

b. Use mathematical models to predict and explain patterns of inheritance.

(Clarification statement: Students should be able to use Punnett squares

(monohybrid and dihybrid crosses) and/or rules of probability, to analyze the

following inheritance patterns: dominance, codominance, incomplete dominance.)

Engage

In order to generate interest in genetics, the introduction video asks students to

think about their own genetics and whether they look like or do not look like their own
family members. Having students think about their own genetics connects this lesson to

the real world and the students own appearances and family members. The goal of this

introduction video is to get the students excited to learn more about genetics and to

engage them in this lesson and Aurasma game.

Explore

To get the students exploring their own genetic inheritance a little bit more, the

next activity in this Aurasma Independent Learning Game asks students to think about

their own eye color and the eye color of their biological parents, grandparents, and

siblings. Students should start to think about how they inherited their eye color when

compared to the eye colors of their families. Students are instructed to make a simple

chart showing their eye color as well as any biological siblings, their parents, and

grandparents.

Explain

During the explanation section of this lesson, students are presented with several

important terms and definitions. Additionally, students are linked to an instructional

video that provides a brief yet clear lesson that includes the terms that they learned and

introduces the students to the Punnett Square. Students are also given some basic

examples of a Punnett Square.

Extend

This section is where the students will apply their new learning. Students are

given a worksheet that contains a chart with Greg Mendels Pea Plants. The students will

work through this worksheet and apply the knowledge they learned about dominant and

recessive traits and Punnett Squares.

Evaluate

For the student to demonstrate understanding of this concept, the student will

complete a final project activity called Bug Creation Activity. The students are given a

Mom and a Dad bug and are given their genotypes. The students have to determine these

bugs phenotypes, create a model of either the mom or dad bug, and then create Punnett

Squares predicting the genotypes of the offspring of these two parents. This activity

applies the students knowledge and allows the students to demonstrate full understanding

of what they have learned.

Conclusion

To conclude this project, there is a brief conclusion video that recaps what the

students have learned and challenges them to go back to the eye color chart they made

about themselves and their immediate family members and try to predict what alleles

they may have for eye color. Lastly, students are given a brief video that allows them to

look ahead to what they will learn in the next lesson about genetics and inheriting traits

from their parents. This will hopefully excite the students to keep digging deeper into

understanding genetic inheritance.

Step-by-Step Directions: How to complete the Independent Learning Project Game

1) Hover over the first page in the notebook with your Aurasma app. This will

produce a video that will introduce you to this independent learning project game

and provide you with over all expectations for the project.

2) Hover over the Eye Color Explorations image with the Aurasma app. This will

produce a video that talks to the students about their eye color inheritance. It will
encourage them to explore their own eye color and the eye colors of their

immediate family members by creating a chart.

3) Definitions: The next several pages in the notebook are definitions. If the students

hover over the word Definition, they will be given basic instructions on the

definition section of the notebook, and they will be encouraged to write down

these definitions for future studying purposes. Then, the students will hover over

each word in the notebook to learn the definition.

4) The last word in the definition section is Punnett Square. When students hover

over this word, they will be directed to a link to YouTube so that they can watch

an instructional video that includes all of the terms they just learned as well as an

introduction to Punnett Squares.

5) After viewing the Punnett Square video, there is a page with three examples.

Students will hover over the words, Example 1, Example 2, and Example

3. These will bring up images of examples of basic Punnett Squares.

6) Next, students will see a worksheet in their notebook. There are instructions at the

top of the page to hover over the chart with Aurasma. When students hover over

the chart, audio instructions will appear that explain how to work through this

worksheet.

7) The next activity is a Bug Creation Activity. Students are instructed to hover over

the chart at the top of the worksheet. This will bring up a video with instructions

on how to complete this project. Students will work through the worksheet and

then create a bug based on the bugs phenotype. Additionally, students will use

Punnett Squares to predict the genotypes of the offspring.

8) The last page in the notebook has a Conclusion video that the students will view

when hovering over the word Conclusion. It reviews what the students learned

in this lesson and challenges them to use the eye color chart they created to try to

determine what alleles they might have for their eye color.

9) The last phrase on the last page is Looking Ahead. When students hover over

this, they are given information about what they will learn in the next lesson about

genetics and how we, as a class, will dig deeper into genetic inheritance.
