New Taussig Center Construction (by Jing and Priyanka)
The Taussig Cancer Center, or the R building, at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus is regarded as a top-tier can-
cer treatment location, the eighth ranked in the nation and the best in Ohio. The new building began construction in Sep-
tember 2014 and after two-and-a-half years, officially opened its doors on March 6, 2017. The current Taussig center re-
placed the former building and has added significant new features.
Upgraded from the previous building, the recently-finished Taussig building exemplifies new organization, with
patient ease held as the foremost priority. The new project encompasses 377,000 square feet and utilized a budget of
$276 million dollars. Taussig now combines all treatment departments into a multidisciplinary system that seeks to create
a less stressful, less hectic patient experience. Taussig includes facilities for clinical trials and laboratories, chemotherapy
suites, imaging and testing, and patient rooms for exams and treatment, and new state-of-the-art technology. In addition
to areas for treatment, Taussig exhibits a research center, wellness center with spiritual and meditation services, spa cen-
ter. It also contains a caf and a boutique with complimentary wigs, scarves, and hats for patients undergoing chemother-
apy treatment. To alleviate some of the burden of treatment, art and music therapy is available to patients and their fami-
lies.
Notable about the new Taussig facility is its aesthetic architectural and design features. Bringing color to the walls
are numerous pieces of contemporary art, wayfinders meant to transport and enliven the imagination of the viewer. The
location harnesses sustainable, energy efficient-components. Ninety-three percent of materials have been recycled to
date, the ceilings include LED lighting, and prominent high floor-to-ceiling, overarching windows. Their maximum transpar-
ency allows for a beautiful view of the nature outside, which serves to provide natural, soothing light for healing. In fact,
the entire project used 30,000 square feet of interior glass! Outside the doors, visitors will notice the mirror-like, reflective
outside surface of the building, and an abstract-art-inspired sculpture flaunting the entryway, located a ways from the
porte-cochere and the cantilever. Designers of the new Taussig have placed an emphasis on simplicity and exhibiting
compassionate minimalism to cancel excess noise to foster an aura...of hope [and] positivity. The new facility will con-
tinue to be a source of healing, rejuvenation, and empowerment for patients enduring a difficult yet determined in their
lives.
