0 Introduction

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available
with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change, and
distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose.Open-source software may be
developed in a collaborative public manner. Open-source software is the most prominent
example of open-source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-
generated contentor (legally defined) open-content movements.

2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System

2.1 Meaning of Open Source Operating System

An operating system is a set of programs containing instructions that coordinate all


the activities among computer hardware resources. Most operating system perform
similar function that includes starting a computer, provide a user interface,
managing program, managing memory and configuring devices. Some operating
system also allows user to control a network and administer security.

Open Source Operating System is any operating system that is free to use
and which provides the original code where the source code is available (under a
copyright license) to the public, which enables them to use, modify enhance the
operating system, and redistribute the modified (or unmodified) form of the
operating system. The advance user can modify the code of the operating system
to make it works better for them in starting the computer or a likely user interface.

EXAMPLES 1: Linux Ubuntu

Ubuntu originally, according to the company website is a Debian-


based Linux operating system and distribution, with Unity as its default
desktop environment for personal computers including smartphones in

later versions. Ubuntu also runs network servers. It is based on free
software and named after the Southern African philosophy of ubuntu ,
which often is translated as "humanity towards others" or "the belief in a
universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity".

Mandriva S.A. was a public software company specializing in


Linux and open-source software. Its corporate headquarters was in Paris,
and it had development centers in Metz, France and Curitiba, Brazil.
Mandriva, S.A. was the developer and maintainer of a Linux distribution
called Mandriva Linux, as well as various enterprise software products.
Mandriva is a founding member of the Desktop Linux Consortium.
