After more than 40 years with the Missouri
Botanical Garden, master gardener and horticulturist
June Hutson might well have retired this past January
for some much-deserved leisure time.
In fact, Hutson said she retired for the opposite rea-
son. She wants to spend as much time as possible tend-
ing to her passion getting her hands dirty in the gar-
den.

I really missed the physical work and I had a won-
derful crew when I retired. If I was going to continue
gardening I needed to retire while my physical health
was still good, Hutson said. I was 74 when I retired,

If she had it to do over again, Hutson said she might
have retired in the summer instead of winter when she
could have been outside in her garden.

on the third Friday of

Kirkwoods Mary Schmidt wore her finest
Shakespearean-era attire while she danced the night
away to live classical music at the Midsummer Night
Ball.
Schmidt was joined by other members of the
Childgrove English Country Dancers on June 16 as they
allemanded, casted and went to corners as directed by
caller John Ramsey.
Participants, like Schmidt, come to dance and to
relive history. These communal-style folk dances are
held on the first and third Fridays of the month at The
Monday Club, 37 S. Maple Ave., in Webster Groves. The
quarterly balls like the Midsummer Night Ball are
dress-up affairs.
