Objective: Students will be able to extend a South African greeting and experience the culture through a South
African dance.

Preparation: Deborah Wene will be coming to the FCS380 class on

(30 Minutes Nov. 10) Thursday, November 10 to teach us teachers what she
will be teaching the children so that we know the steps
and are prepared to assist at the day camp.
Intro/Before Lesson: I will teach the children how to say Hello and how are
(3 minutes) you in one of the more common South African
Languages Zulu.

I will say a phrase/greeting in Zulu to the children and

they will all at once repeat it back to me. The children
will get 30 seconds to practice, by repeating each
phrase to a partner, before we move on to the next
part of the conversation (how are you, Im find and
thanks)

They will be able to greet Deborah in the Zulu

language, by saying Hello (Sawubona see below)
when she comes over to begin her instruction.

Zulu:
Sawubona sah-woo-BOH-nah Hello! (addressing
one person)
Sanibonani sah-nee-boh-NAH-nee Hello!
(addressing two or more people)
Unjani oon-JAH-nee How are you? (one person)
Ninjani nin-JAH-nee How are you? (two or more
people)
Ngiyaphila ung-ee-yah-PEE-lah Im fine!
Ngiyabonga ung-ee-yah-BOH-ngah Thanks!

Demonstration/Lesson: Deborah Wene will be our guest, and will be teaching

(15 minutes) the children the African Dance. Exact dance name and
instructions/steps will be known at a later date.
Learning Activity: Children will be able to perform the dance, and wear
(2 minutes) the hats that they made from Peru and the scarves
from Norway.
End of instruction: A handout will be made available at a later date, when
Handouts steps are better known. This will be printed out and
handed out to the children at the end of the dance for
them to put into their adventure books.
