Whentheengineisstarted,thetransmissionchargingpumppullsoilfromthereservoir.Thepumpsendsthe
oilthroughafilter,tothepriorityvalveandtothepressurecontrolvalveforthetransmission.

Whenthespeedselectorknobisinfirstspeedandthetransmissiondirectionalcontrolhandleisin
NEUTRAL,speedselectionspool(1)anddirectionselectionspool(8)areinthepositionsthatareshownin
theschematic.

Thepositionofspeedselectionspool(1)openstheNo.4clutchandtheNo.5clutchtothereservoir.The
positionofdirectionselectionspool(8)blocksthedirectionclutchoiltotheNo.1clutchandtotheNo.2
clutch,andthespoolopenstheNo.3clutchtopumpoil.

Oilfromthepumpflowstomodulationreliefvalve(2).Theoilfillsthechamberaroundthemodulation
reliefvalve.Theoilflowsthroughanorificeinthevalvespoolandtheoilopensthepoppetvalve.Theoil
fillstheslugchamberattheleftendofthevalvespool.

Pumpoilalsoflowsthroughtheflowcontrolorificetodirectionselectionspool(8).Theoilcanthenflowto
No.3clutch,ratiovalve(9)andpressuredifferentialvalve(5).

Theoilflowsthroughorifice(4)inthevalvespooltothepressuredifferentialvalve.Oilstartstofillthe
chamberattheleftendofthespool.

WhenthetransmissionspeedcontrolleverandthetransmissiondirectionalcontrolhandleareinNEUTRAL,
orifices(6)cannotsendoiltothereservoirbecausethepassagesaroundtheorificesarefilledwithpumpoil.

OperationofModulationReliefValve
Pumpoil,thatflowstothepressuredifferentialvalve,alsoflowsthroughanorificetotherightendofload
piston(3).Therightendoftheloadpistonisclosedtothereservoirbythepositionofpressuredifferential
valve(5).Theflowofoiltoloadpiston(3)isrestrictedbytheorifice.

WhenNo.3clutchisfullofoil,thepressureinthespeedclutchcircuitstartstoincrease.Theincreaseisfelt
intheslugchamberattheleftendofmodulationreliefvalve(10).

Whenthepressureinthespeedclutchcircuitreachesthehighpressuresettingofthemodulationreliefvalve,
theloadpistonmovestotherightandthemodulationreliefvalvemovestotheleft.Thisallowsoiltoflowto
theclutchesandtheclutchesfillwithoil.

Thepressurethatisfeltbythemodulationreliefvalveisthesamepressurethatisfeltbytherightendof
loadpiston(3).Theorificeinthesupplypassagetotheloadpistoncausesashortdelayinthepressure
increaseattherightendoftheloadpiston.

Thepressureincreaseattheendoftheloadpistonmovesthepistontotheleft.Themovementincreasesthe
forceofthespringsandthemovementmovesmodulationreliefvalve(10)totheleft.Themovementcauses
apressureincreaseintheslugchamberandthemovementmovesthemodulationreliefvalvebacktothe
right.

Theleftandrightmovementofthemodulationreliefvalve,andthemovementtotheleftoftheloadpiston
causestheclutchpressuretoincreasegradually.Thegradualincreaseinpressureisknownasmodulation.

Theloadpistonmovementtotheleftstopswhentheloadpistonmovestothedrainpassage.Modulation
stops.Asoilflowsoutofthedrainpassage,oilcomesthroughthesupplypassagetotheloadpistonchamber.

Theoilflowkeepstheloadpistoninpositionwithoutanyfurthermovement.Pressureinthesystemwillbe
limitedbythespringforceonthemodulationreliefvalve.Thevalveisnowopenedinordertoallowoilto
flowtothelubricationcircuit.

OperationofRatioValve
Ratiovalve(9)forthetorqueconvertercontrolsthemaximumpressuretotheconverter.Theratiovalve
preventsdamagetothecomponentsofthetorqueconverterduringacoldoilstartup.

Thepressuretothetorqueconverterisfeltagainsttheleftendofthevalvespool.Thepressurepushesonthe
diameterofthevalvespool.

Pressurefromthespeedclutchcircuitisfeltintheslugchamberofthevalvespool.Thepressureisagainst
thediameteroftheslug.

Thepressurethatisrequiredtomovethevalvetotherightisalowerpressurethanthepressurethatis
requiredtomovethevalvetotheleft.

Whentheinletpressuretothetorqueconverterapproachesthemaximumpressure,thevalvespoolmovesto
therightandoilisallowedtoflowtothereservoir.Whenthepressuresareagaininbalance,speedclutch
pressureoilmovesthevalvebacktotheleft.

Theunusedoilflowstotheratiovalveforthetorqueconverter.

clutchisopenedtothereservoir.Thepressureinthesystemdecreases.Springsmovemodulationreliefvalve
(10)towardtheleft.

Pressuredifferentialvalve(5)movesuntiltheoilfromloadpiston(3)flowstothereservoir.Thisallowsthe
loadpistontomovetotheright.

No.5speedclutchstartstofill.Whentheclutchisfullofoil,thepressureincreasesinthesystem.The
pressureincreaseisfeltthroughorifice(4)andagainsttheleftendofthepressuredifferentialvalve.

Thepressuremovesthepressuredifferentialvalveuntiltherightendofloadpiston(3)isclosedtothe
reservoir.ThedifferentialvalvealsoallowsoiltoflowtotheNo.2clutchandtheclutchstartstofill.

Thepressuredifferentialvalvewillkeepapproximately380kPa(55psi)pressuredifferencebetweentheoil
tothespeedclutchandtheoiltothedirectionclutch.Thepressuredifferenceallowsthespeedclutchto
engagebeforethedirectionclutch.

Whentheendoftheloadpistonisclosedtothereservoir,thepressureoilstartstofilltheloadpiston
chamberagain.Theloadpistonstartstomovetotheleftandmodulationstarts.

Themovementoftheloadpistoncompressesthespringsandthemovementmovesthemodulationrelief
valvetotheleft.Themovementtotheleftcausesthepressureofthepumpoilintheslugchamberto
increaseandthemovementmovesthemodulationreliefvalvebacktotheright.

Modulationcontinuesuntiltheclutchesreachfullpressure.Whenfullpressureisreached,theloadpiston
willbecompletelytotheleftandthemodulationreliefvalvewillallowtheoilflowtothelubricationcircuit.

NeutralStartSwitch
Anelectricalswitchinthetransmissioncontrollinkagerequiresthedirectionalcontrolhandletobein
neutralbeforethemachinewillstart.IfthedirectionalcontrolhandleisintheFORWARDpositionorinthe
REVERSEpositionandtheswitchfails,themachinewillnotmove.Whenthemachineisstarted,the
differentialvalvewillnotmovetoanoperatingpositionwhilethedirectionalspoolisnotintheNEUTRAL
position.Thedifferentialvalvewillnotmovetoanoperatingpositionbecausetheleftendofthedifferential
valveremainsopentothereservoir.
