NORDIC VOID
PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Traditionally, void form is used for installations

where there are swelling soils present, to provide
temporary support for structural slabs until the
concrete is self-supporting on the piles, caissons or
grade beams.

The theory is that over time, the structural integrity

of the void would dissipate, leaving a gap between
the foundation and the soil. This gap is to allow the
soil to expand into the void space due to moisture or
frost heave without imparting uplift stress on the
foundation to reduce the risk of causing damage
during swell/frost events.

However, over a 50 year design period, natural

movement of both soil and moisture allows them to
migrate into the void cavity, leaving the foundation
susceptible to damage due to frost heave and/or
moisture swell.

Nordic Void is designed to resist permanent

deformation and bio-degradation. It acts as a
cushion to absorb soil movement and prevent uplift
pressure from acting on the foundation/slab. It
recovers to ensure that the void space remains filled,
preventing unwanted soil and moisture movement.
Load bearing to permit install of rebar and live
pour of concrete yet
Compliant to yield to uplift forces.
Consistent - capable of predictable performance
across a wide range of ambient temperatures
Resilient to significant deterioration when
exposed to bitumen, crude oil and other
common organic and polymeric soil
contaminants
Lightweight & easy to install: Does not require
plywood or poly protective covers reducing
material & labour costs.
Environmentally stable: inert, chemically &
hydrolytically stable, non-biodegradable, able to
resist water saturation, and is recyclable.

3.1. MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS

i. Comply with Norseman Incs written recommendations or specifications including product
technical bulletins, handling, storage and installation instructions.
3.2. PREPARATION
i. For horizontal application as a void form under a subsequent concrete pour, the installation site
must be prepared according to the applicable geotechnical and structural engineering
specifications including site levelling, compaction, depth at which the void product should be
placed considering the thickness of the void product to be used.

3.3. EXAMINATION
i. Examine void product and immediately inform the Distributor or Norseman of any defects in
writing.

3.4. INSTALLATION
i. For both vertical and horizontal void/compressible void medium applications, it is recommended
when laying out the void product that all joints of the sheets should be placed as tightly as
possible. This will help ensure proper product performance over time.
ii. Use largest dimensions possible to reduce the number of joints.
iii. Butt joints tightly and offset perpendicular joints.
iv. Offset both vertical and horizontal joints on multiple layer applications.
v. When conditions do not allow for a tight fit of the void form sheets, and the joints have a space
larger than , it is recommended smaller pieces of void material be used to fill the space and
reduce the gap to a minimum, and/or the joints should be sealed or taped.
vi. Should void product need to be cut to suit the overall dimensions of the foundation or to install
around footings, piles or other forms, the void product can be cut using a reciprocating saw such
as a Sawzall. Care should be taken to ensure the cut is perpendicular to the surface of the void, to
ensure close fit to abutting void or to the form or obstacle it is being fit against.
vii. For vertical void/compressible void medium, use of appropriate insulation hangars or anchor
fasteners are recommended to secure the void product to the adjacent wall or structure until
backfill is in place. Follow the installation recommendations as supplied by the.

viii. Void product installed as a vertical void/compressible void medium may also be mechanically
fastened to the adjacent wall or structure using lag bolts, concrete fasteners with large fender
style washers, etc., as required. Be sure to avoid any damage to the structure.
ix. Follow installation requirements as specified by the architect or engineer for each site and
application.
x. Place void product to cover area and perimeter of the foundation as specified on the structural

Recommended Handling,
Storage & Installation of
Nordic Void Sheets/Boards

Nordic Void Polyolefin Void Form is a strong, flexible, resilient, water resistant closed cell material designed to
protect pile caps, foundations and poured pads from damage due to repeated frost heaves and soil swell.

# 1 Storage
Nordic Void sheets should be stored under cover to prevent long term exposure (i.e. any exposure in excess of
two weeks) to UV.
Nordic Void is a relatively light material so care should also be taken to secure the sheets to prevent any
possibility of the effects of high winds which could cause the void to become airborne, causing a potential safety
hazard.

#2 Effective Temperature Range

Nordic Void has been used successfully in temperatures ranging from -40F (-40C) to 140F (60C) without
significant effect to many of its properties. For installations outside of this temperature range, please consult
with your Norseman representative prior to use.

#3 Installation
To install Nordic Void the installation site must be prepared according to the applicable geotechnical and
structural engineering specifications including site levelling, depth at which the Nordic Void should be placed
and the thickness of the Nordic Void sheets to be used.

It is recommended when laying out the Nordic Void sheets that all joints of the sheets should be placed as
tightly as possible. This will help ensure proper product performance over time. All Norseman Nordic Void
sheets come squared from the factory allowing them to fit closely together. Should individual Nordic Void
sheets need to be cut to suit the overall dimensions of the foundation or to install around footings, piles or other
forms during the pour, sheets can be cut using a reciprocating saw such as a Sawzall. Care should be taken to
ensure the cut is perpendicular to the surface of the void, to ensure close fit to abutting void or to the form or
obstacle it is being fit against.

#4 Seams:
When conditions do not allow for a tight fit of the Nordic Void sheets, and the joints have a space larger than ,
it is recommended smaller pieces of Nordic Void be used to fill the space and reduce the gap to a minimum,
and/or the joints should be sealed or taped. There are two main processes which can be used to finish the joint
and maintain a tight fit of the Nordic Void sheets.

1. Joints can be finished with a duct style or vapour barrier type tape, such as Tuck Tape Tape Sheathing Tape
#205-02. When installing the tape, contact of the tape to the Nordic Void sheet must be made on both sides
of the joint to ensure the two sheets are joined. The use of the tape will hold the sheets in place during a
concrete pour.

2. Joints can be covered with Norseman Nor-Flex, supplied in x 6 wide foam rolls in 50 foot lengths. The
Nor-Flex can be adhered to the Nordic Void using a heat gun, or adhesives, such as STA'-PUT SPH spray
contact adhesive, LePage PL-Acousti-seal construction adhesive or 3M 4693 Plastic Adhesive. For a
complete list of adhesives that are compatible with Nordic Void please refer to the attached list.

Section 7 Handling and Storage

STORAGE TEMPERATURE: Max. 160 F (71 C)

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING, STORAGE AND TRANSPORTATION:

WARNING: This polyethylene foam is made with a flammable hydrocarbon blowing agent, most of which is
removed prior to shipment. However, residual flammable vapors may gradually exhaust from the foam during
storage, fabrication or use. Avoid close confinement of large foam quantities and sources of ignition near the
foam (i.e. smoking, sparks, flames.) Do not store near heating equipment. Heating equipment should be
inspected regularly during every heating season to check for pinholes or larger defects in the combustion
chamber. Burns readily when exposed to plentiful and hot ignition sources. Use self-contained breathing
apparatus in the event of fire.

WARNING: Fabricating operations which cut large numbers of interior foam cells, can release localized amounts
of flammable, residual blowing agent. Provide adequate ventilation to avoid the buildup of blowing agent
concentration.

WARNING: Transport large quantities of this polyethylene foam in ventilated vehicles. Exercise caution when
opening vehicles containing this polyethylene foam to avoid all possible sources of ignition (lit tobacco products,
sparks, etc.) near the foam and vehicle.

Section 8 Exposure Controls / Personal Protection

EXPOSURE LIMITS:
OSHA-PEL: Hydrocarbon Gas 800 ppm
ACGIH-TLV: Hydrocarbon Gas 800 ppm

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

EYE / FACE PROTECTION: Use goggles or safety glasses with side shields when exposed to foam dust or particles.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: In dusty atmosphere and where fumes are generated above regulatory limits, wear
appropriate respirator protection.

VENTILATION: Use local exhaust ventilation if necessary to maintain hydrocarbon gas levels below the PEL and
LEL. For guidance on engineering controls, refer to the ACGIH publication Industrial Ventilation.
