Fast Forward-Back to Basics
Preparing for the 21st century or educating for
the knowledge economy are just as clich' as
overall development and holistic growth-phrases,
that sound nice, leave much to imagination and
are oft difficult (if not outright impossible to
define, leave alone measure). At the same time,
to believe that test scores on standardized tests
are a good measure of intelligence or a predictor
of success is debatable.
That the world order is rapidly changing and that
the IT revolution will alter the skills required for

inclination
to learn more,
will be very apt
to think that
he knows
enough
success is obvious, however, schools, the K-12
schools do not have to (and perhaps cannot &
should not) instill in the child the entire tool-kit for
dealing with the world as it would be in times to
come.
Clearly, the children of tomorrow would find it
extremely difficult to deal with the environment if
they are not able to use the smart phone, but that
they would learn anyway. Also, every child would
not be required to know the laws of physics or the
history of medieval India, but what they would
certainly need are the skills of critical thinking, the
art of networking and problem solving. The schools
then have the task of providing a strong foundation
for these skills to evolve and flourish. While this calls
for a paradigm shift, fortunately, it does not alter
the need, approach or the structure of the
foundation.
Modern skyscrapers need the foundations just as
much as simple single storey structures. The
principles remain the same. In our quest for the new
and modern, a divorce from the basics would spell
disaster. Just as the digital natives would need to
appreciate the need of human connect more
profoundly, the education system, in order to fast
forward to new skills and competencies would need
to strengthen the basics-else the edifice will
collapse under it's own weight.
Experiments galore, from a hole in the wall to smart
boards, flipped classrooms, differentiated learning,
multiple intelligence, CCE, just to name a few. We
believe that children will learn only when taught
right by passionate, loving, enthusiastic and
determined teachers under the leadership of
transformational leaders. Curricula, technology,
infrastructure, resources will all play a role, but
education is & shall continue to be a beautiful tango
between the principal, teachers & parents with the
child in the centre. It is our sincere hope that in the
pursuit of futuristic requirements, we do not
overlook the basics. As a matter of fact, there is a
critical need to strengthen the same to equip the
children for a fast changing & demanding world that
they will step into.

coming in series of conferences on Excellence in
School Education is an exploration of best
practices. Building on the formats of previous
conferences, this year, conference for school heads
& teachers will run parallel. For almost a decade, we

Call for Papers

Interested participants are requested to send their abstracts related to sub themes not exceeding 200 words and
full papers not exceeding 2000 words. The cover page of the abstract should contain title, names of authors &
academic degree, professional title & email address. A soft copy of the abstract should be mailed to
info@eduexcellence.org. Selected Papers presented at conference will be considered for publication in the
conference proceedings.
