Mohamed Al
Balushi
Mohamed is from Oman, and is studying
a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of
Surgery (MBChB).

I have always been interested in science

from a young age and as I got older, my
interest in human anatomy grew. Becoming
a doctor will satisfy this interest and will
help me make a difference in the lives of
many.
I chose to study at the University of
Auckland because of its high world-
ranking, and after speaking to some
friends who were already at the University
of Auckland, I decided that it would be the
best option for me.
I really like how the University has a
good blend of old and new. Facilities at
the University are state-of-the-art but
the historic buildings give a sense of how
established the University is.
Interacting with my tutors has always
been very easy. They have been very helpful
with any questions that I have had.
Auckland has a good combination of city
life with options to get into nature close by.
As a city, it is neither crowded nor empty.
Once in a while I like to escape the city and
Auckland makes that easy with Mission Bay
and Waiheke beaches being only 10-30
minutes away from the city.
Kiwis are really friendly, respectful
and welcoming. It is easy to start
conversations either with a total stranger
in the street, or with the person sitting next
to you in the lecture theatre, which is why it
has been easy to find new friends in a new
environment."

When I first came to this country from

China, I knew the University of Auckland
was ranked highest in New Zealand, so I
didnt consider going anywhere else.
Before my PhD, I completed a Graduate
Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma and
Master of Commerce. I came across
some really outstanding lecturers and
completed projects that allowed me to
learn a lot of practical tools and skills,
which laid the foundation for further
postgraduate study. When I met my
main supervisor, I started a new learning
journey.
For my PhD I designed and implemented
purposeful systems that can be used
to create purpose-driven, context-
sensitive, stakeholder-relevant, adaptive
visualisations. My research helps people
turn their data into visual stories that
inform, engage, enchant and empower,
and eventually achieve better support for
decision making.

Zee Shake Lee
Zee Shake is from Malaysia and
completed a Master of Architecture
(Professional). He is now employed at
Jasmax, a leading architectural firm in
Auckland.

I chose to study at the University of

Auckland as I wanted to experience living
in one of the best cities in the world. The
University of Auckland and the cultural
vibrancy in Auckland were considerations
in my decision to study here.
At the University everyone is trained to
think critically. But besides theoretical
knowledge and design skills, I also learnt
problem-solving skills, communication
skills and a can-do attitude which helped
build my confidence in the industry.
The University has good support in place
for international students. I was assigned
a Creative Arts and Industries buddy,
an experienced international student
in the faculty. The University support
ranges from English language to health
and counselling. While all this support
is important, my experience has taught
me the greatest support comes from your
classmates, tutors, friends and family.

Natalia Yeo
Natalia, from Singapore, is pursuing a
Master of Education and working at an
early childhood centre in Auckland.

Being with children and teaching them is

my passion. Early childhood education is the
foundation and the most impactful point in
time in every childs life. My goal is to help
young children take a positive direction so
that they have the perseverance to stick with
it when they get older.
I decided to study at the University of
Auckland because it offered the programme
I was interested in with an ideal time frame
to complete, and it is a world-ranked
university.
Studying towards the Master of Education
has given me key skills for conducting
research and a deeper understanding of
my area of interest. It has taught me to use
different lenses to view the world, as well as
to improve the workplace through research
informed practices and solutions.
Like everyone, before I got here, I was most
concerned about making new friends and
where I would live. But New Zealand is a
safe, multi-cultural country very similar
to Singapore and so it was easy for me to
adapt.
The class sizes in my programme are pretty
small so I made friends with people from
all over the world really quickly. Living in
University accommodation made it easy for
me to find like-minded friends, too. Having a
role at one of the Universitys early childhood
centres has not only enabled me to be
part of the early childhood sector in New
Zealand, but has also helped me to cope
with my rent and living expenses.
While living in New Zealand, I am learning
to embrace, learn and grow in every moment
and from whatever situation I am in.

Anna-Kay
Spaulding
Anna-Kay from Jamaica is studying for
a Masters in Disaster Management.
She is also the recipient of the NZAID
scholarship.

Pursuing a Masters degree in Disaster

Management is critical in the planning and
development arena, especially as my home
country Jamaica is susceptible to natural
disasters. When I finish, I plan to work for
international development corporations
around the world at a management level.
I believe that this degree will give me an
added edge.
The engineering laboratories that I worked
in at the University were well-equipped,
modern and had everything that I needed
to succeed. The teaching staff have always
been professional and helpful.
The University has a mixture of students
and I have made friends very easily here.
I have been involved in a variety of
activities around campus, and have
especially enjoyed the yoga club.
I have also had the privilege of travelling
around Auckland and out of Auckland.
I have visited Waiheke, Rotorua, Taupo,
Tauranga, Piha and Queenstown. New
Zealand is a beautiful country and
Auckland is a good mix of city life and
nature.

Abhijeet Patni
Abhijeet is from India and has
completed his Master of Laws (LLM)
degree. He is currently working for
legal publishers LexisNexis.

I completed my LLM in 2015 and have

been working in Auckland ever since. Im
planning on staying for a few more years
before I decide where I want to go next.
I originally come from a small town
Hazaribag in India. I chose the Auckland
Law School at the University of Auckland
to pursue my LLM because it had a
superb international ranking and I heard
it had a great faculty with excellent
infrastructure. Plus, the duration of the
course is only one year, so it was very
achievable.
Ive really enjoyed my time here New
Zealand is a wonderful country to live in,
and obtaining an LLM degree from the
Auckland Law School will help to open
doors of opportunity around the world.
I recently had a baby here and have
found the warmth and care of the people
in New Zealand incomparable. I made
wonderful friends at University, which
made my time memorable and filled
with fun. I would regularly go clubbing,
travelling and play sports with the
friends I made here. Meeting people
from around the world was a definite
highlight of my LLM study.
Its hard adjusting to a new culture and
establishing yourself but I received
a lot of support from staff and other
students at the University. New Zealand
has a cosmopolitan culture, so different
nationalities are common and
welcomed here.
The best advice to international
students who are thinking about
studying here, is dont just think about
the University. Keep in mind that you
will be in one of the most beautiful and
habitable countries in the world with
many opportunities to grow and build
your career.

Making the decision to study at the University

of Auckland was exciting. The realisation
that the University is so multicultural had a
very positive effect on me. It is always a good
conversation-starter when you meet others
from different countries and start talking
about your home countries. I met my best
friends in first year classes.
I have always wanted to work in the area
of science and research and in my last two
years at the University, I specialised in cancer
genetics.
Studying at the University of Auckland has
given me a huge advantage as I now work
as a laboratory technician at the Molecular
Medicine and Pathology Department at the
University.
I have been in research for a year and a half
now but I have many more things I want to
accomplish. I love teaching and worked as
a peer tutor throughout my undergraduate
years. I really enjoy business and project
management. Being part of Chiasma (an
organisation that links academia and the
wider science industries) at the University
helped me create a network and land another
job working on the side for ICEHOUSE, a New
Zealand business-growth incubator.
It is very important to build your connections
early. Think about it as meeting a ton of
amazing people its so much fun. Never
be afraid to reach out to anyone you know. I
grabbed every opportunity that I had during
my years at the University. Email people that
inspire you and take them out for coffee who
knows, they might have a job or a project that
was waiting for you all along.

Diana Benavides
Prado
Diana is from Colombia and is a
recipient of the Colfuturo scholarship.
She is studying for a PhD in Computer
Science.

My research is about building better

machine learning models by transferring
and sharing information between
tasks. Machine learning is becoming
increasingly important as more data is
being collected from a wide variety of
sources (computers, mobile devices,
internet, etc). It uses computational
models to explain real-world behaviours
as described by data. Such models
can then be utilised to predict future
events, so that humans can make better
decisions that lead to better outcomes.
Machine learning has applications
in many areas, such as government,
finance, healthcare, customer
management, natural sciences.
I have always been impressed by the
quality of the research in New Zealand,
especially in my research field, and by
New Zealand as a country.
Apart from academia, I would like to
apply what I have learned in real-world
problems. I would also like to combine
this with teaching so as to encourage
others to do research in this area. My
study at the University of Auckland has
already been really useful for that, since
I have learned a lot of new things in less
than one year!
The General Library here is amazing!
You can really find anything you want,
its quiet, very organised, and has a
wonderful view of the sea! If you need
concentration, this is the place to be.
I enjoy the quality of life here very
much. Living in the heart of the city, at a
University Residence, being able to walk
to University every single day, going for
a run from time to time makes living in
Auckland a great experience.

Kate Riegle
van-West
PhD Dance Studies student, Poi Innovator
from Illinois, USA

I am currently conducting PhD research on

the effects of International Poi on physical
and cognitive function in healthy older
adults.Poi is a ball attached to a flexible
cord which you spin in circles around your
body. It was originally used by Mori to
improve dexterity and hand-wrist flexibility.
I started practising International Poi (the
style practiced outside of Moridom) 10
years ago in a town called Normal, Illinois.
I was enamoured with it from the start, but
it wasnt until I began teaching lessons that
I realised how many benefits other people
were experiencing as well, everything from
better posture to feeling less stressed.
After years of teaching I realised there
was a huge gap between the benefits
myself and others were feeling, and the
scientific evidence to substantiate it. Thats
when I decided to move to New Zealand to
conduct the first clinical trial on poi, and
include some of the cultural discourse in
my dissertation as well. My research aims
to prove if poi can improve physical and
cognitive function in older adults.
In my clinical trial I have a whole battery
of physical and cognitive tests, including
blood pressure, grip strength, balance and
cognitive flexibility. I have completed one
round with 40 participants, and am in the
middle of conducting a second. Preliminary
results are showing trends of improvement
in upper limb range of motion, manual
dexterity, and bimanual coordination, but
I wont know for sure until I complete the
second round and combine the results.
I think poi may be an affordable and fun
solution for keeping the mind and body
active. Simple and effective strategies for
maintaining quality of life in old age are
urgently needed, as the ageing population
is growing at an unprecedented rate.
By conducting the first scientific research
on poi I want to pave the way for future poi/
health research, and hopefully implement
poi in healthcare facilities as a tool to
maintain or improve quality of life.

three-minute thesis competition last year.

University of Auckland has allowed me to
build upon the parts of geography I really
enjoyed in my first two years of study at
the University of Manchester, as well as
introducing me to some new subjects,
such as New Zealand Politics and Marine
Science.
Having lots of opportunities to travel was
a big part of my decision to study abroad
in New Zealand, and it has definitely given
me some incredible experiences. Since
starting my first semester here Ive taken
trips around the North Island to the Bay
of Islands, Piha, Wellington, Hunua, Goat
Island and many more. At the mid-semester
break, I went to the Cook Islands with a
group of friends, which was absolutely
incredible. Over the summer, I spent five
weeks traveling around Australia and a
month in the beautiful South Island of New
Zealand.

Studying at the University of Auckland was

one of the greatest experiences I have had. The
Universitys facilities, education programmes and
teaching resources are excellent. Throughout my
time at the University, I gained specific knowledge
in my area of study but also developed soft skills
which are invaluable to my growth and career.
I also used CDES services and attended a series of
interview skills workshops to help prepare me for
the workforce. The interview workshops provided
me with insights into the recruitment process by
using real-life examples and case studies to help
me understand what the interviewer was looking
for. That gave me invaluable tips for answering
questions.
Looking for a job was challenging, but I believe
the key is to have a positive attitude, to persevere
and to consistently find ways to become a better
person. This will make it easier to overcome
challenges and will equip you with the tenacity
that you need while at work.

Glossary
Bachelors degree: Three years full-time for most programmes. Some
clinical programmes take four to six years. Usually the initial programme
of study a student completes at university.
Bachelors (honours) degree: Usually one year full-time, once you
have completed your bachelors degree. In the following degrees, your
honours year may also be incorporated into a four-year bachelors
programme: Engineering, Fine Arts, Law, Social Work, Urban Planning.
Your study will include a research dissertation or research project. A
bachelors (honours) degree can be an entry pathway into a one-year
masters degree or a doctoral programme.
Conjoint bachelors degree: Four to six years full-time depending
on the programmes. Conjoint programmes allow you to pursue two
undergraduate degrees at the same time, giving you the opportunity
to develop a wider knowledge base and broadening you career
opportunities in a shorter time-frame than completing two degrees
separately.
Course: A specific topic of study within a subject. For undergraduate
study most are taught and assessed over one semester and are typically
worth 15 points.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): Three to four years full-time. The PhD is an
advanced research-based degree for students who intend to pursue an
academic or research career.
Graduate diploma: Usually one year full-time, once you have completed
your bachelors degree. You can specialise further or gain expertise
in a new subject. A graduate diploma can be an entry pathway into
postgraduate study.
Major: A required core component of an undergraduate degree including
a specified number of points at an advanced level.
Masters degree: One to two years full-time. The length of the degree
will depend on the level and specialisation of your prior study.
Masters degrees at the University of Auckland can be wholly research
(a research masters), coursework-only (a taught masters), or a
combination of research and coursework. Most masters degrees will
advance you in your existing area of study. However, some University
of Auckland masters programmes will also allow you to move into a
different field.
Minor: A component of a degree including a specified number of points
above Stage I in a subject. A minor has fewer compulsory courses and
points to fulfil than a major.
Named doctorates Three to four years full-time. The University of
Auckland offers named doctorates in some subject areas. Acceptance
into these programmes is based on academic merit, and in general
requires a masters degree with a high level of honours, or equivalent.
Postgraduate certificate: A one-semester, full-time programme offered
by certain faculties in a specific area.
Postgraduate diploma: One year full-time. A postgraduate diploma
is the same level of study as the honours year in a bachelors (honours)
degree. It is primarily a taught programme, but your study can include a
research project. A postgraduate diploma can be an entry pathway into a
one-year masters degree.
Programme: A prescribed set of courses or other work (meeting a
required number of points) which on satisfactory completion leads to the
award of a University of Auckland certificate, diploma or degree.
Stage: The academic level of a subject. Most undergraduate subjects
have three stages (I introductory, II intermediate, III advanced).
Study Abroad: One to two semesters. This programme allows students
who are currently studying at overseas tertiary institutions to enrol in
courses at the University of Auckland and earn credit towards their home
university qualification. See pg. 32 for details.
Subject: An area of learning provided by a school or a disciplinary area,
or by disciplinary areas offering related courses.
