2. In an expedition, a group of boys walk 60 m due North, 100m due West, 50m at 30o
East of North, 70m South-East and 30m South. How far does their final position from
the starting point?
3. Kasim drives South at 70 km hr-1 for 2 hours and then continues heading West at 80 km hr-1
for hour. What is his (a) average speed (b) average velocity?
4. A motorist drives north for 35 minutes at 85.0 km hr-1 and then stops for 15 minutes.
He then continues north, traveling 130 km in 2 hours. (a) What is his total
displacement? (b) What is his average velocity?
9. A car starts from rest and travels for 5.0 s with a uniform acceleration of + 1.5 ms-2.
The driver then applies the brakes, causing a uniform acceleration of -2.0 m/s2. If the
brakes are applied for 3.0 s, (a) how fast is the car going at the end of the braking
period, and (b) how far has it gone?
10. A ball is thrown straight upward and returns to the throwers hand after 3.00 s in the
air. A second ball is thrown at an angle of 30.0 with the horizontal. At what speed
must the second ball be thrown so that it reaches the same height as the one thrown
vertically?
11. A paratrooper jumps freely from a plane for the first 100m. When the parachute
opens it will provide an upward acceleration of 2.5 ms-2. If he lands on the ground
with a speed of 3 ms-1, how long is his time of flight. What is the height of the plane?
12. A brick is thrown upward from the top of a building at an angle of 25 to the
horizontal and with an initial speed of 15 m s-1. If the brick is in flight for 3.0 s, how
tall is the building?

3. What is the minimum horizontal force to stop a 40 kg box from sliding down an
inclined plane of coefficient of friction 0.2, given that the plane is 50o to the
horizontal?
4. A 6.0-kg object undergoes an acceleration of 2.0 m s-2. (a) What is the magnitude of
the resultant force acting on it? (b) If this same force is applied to a 4.0-kg object,

5. The air exerts a forward force of 10 N on the propeller of a 0.20-kg model airplane. If

6. A 1000-kg boat moves through the water with two forces acting on it. One is a 2 000-

force due to the water around the bow. (a) If it starts from rest, how far will the boat
move in 10 s? (b) What will its velocity be at the end of that time?
7. A boy of mass 35kg stands on a weighing machine inside a lift. What will be the
reading of the machine while the lift is (a) accelerating upward at 2.0 ms -2 (b) moving
down at constant speed of 2.0 ms-1.
9. When braking on a dry road, a car skids a distance of 38m before it stops. Assuming it
is at the same speed, how far does it skid on a wet road? Given, the coefficients of
friction when dry is 0.95 and when wet is 0.2.

12. Refering to FIGURE 5, what is the ratio of m1: m2 to keep the system in equilibrium?
13. In FIGURE 5, if m1 = 3kg and m2 = 5kg, and the coefficient of friction on both sides
of the inclined is 0.3 what is (a) the acceleration of the system (b) the tension of the
string.
14. In FIGURE 5, m1 = m2 and the coefficient on both sides is 0.3. If m1 is pushed slightly
such that it moves with an initial speed of 0.9 ms-1, how far does it moved before it
stops.

5. A 2500 kg car moves down a level highway driven by a 1000 N forward force exerted on the
drive wheels and a 750 N resistive force by the road. Find the speed of the car after it has
moved a distance of 20 m, assuming that it starts from rest.
6. A child on a roller skate with a combined mass of 50.0 kg moves down a slope. If he starts
from rest and has a speed of 3.5 ms-1 at end of the slope, what is the height of the slope?
7. A 0.25 kg block is placed on a light vertical spring and pushed downwards, compressing the
spring by 0.10 m. After the block is released, it leaves the spring and continues to travel
vertically upwards. If the spring constant is 5.0 103 Nm-1, what height above the point of
release will the block reach?

9. A driver notices he is slowing down from 85 km hr-1 to 65 km hr-1 in 6.0 s on a level road. If
the mass of the car is 1150 kg, what is the power delivered by the engine?
10. A boy on skate board starts from rest on an 12 m inclined ramp 20o with the horizontal. At
the end of the ramp he continues moving on the horizontal floor. If the coefficient of friction
on both surfaces is 0.15, how far does he move on the horizontal floor before coming to rest?
11. A hydropower station has a resevoir that is 450 m high and can generate a total power of 300
MW continuously for 5 hours. What is (a) the total energy generated by the station (b) the
volume of water falls per second to generate this power.
12. A bullet of mass 800 g and speed of 600 ms-1 is shot into a solid wall. If the bullet
penetrated to depth of 5.0 cm into the wall, determine (a) the average force and (b) the time
taken to stop the bullet.

catches the ball and brings it to rest in 0.02 s. (a) What is the impulse delivered to the ball

2. An 8.0 g bullet is shot into a 2.0 kg wooden block that is free to move on a smooth surface.
After the collision, the bullet is embedded in the block and moves at 2 cm s -1. What is the
speed of the bullet?
3. An 8.0 g bullet is fired into a 250 g block that is initially at rest at the edge of a table of
height 1.0 m. After the impact, the bullet remains in the block, and the block falls under
gravity and lands 2.0 m from the bottom of the table. Determine the initial speed of the
bullet.
4. A 1200 kg car traveling initially with a speed of 25.0 ms-1 in an easterly direction crashes
into the rear end of a 9000 kg truck moving in the same direction at 20.0 ms-1. The velocity
of the car right after the collision is 18.0 ms-1 to the east. (a) What is the velocity of the
truck right after the collision? (b) How much mechanical energy is lost in the collision?
5. A 700 N man holds a 30 N rifle firmly against his shoulder. He fires a 5.0 g bullet with a
speed of 300 ms-1. Find the recoil speed of the man and rifle.
6. A ball of mass 800 g moving at 30 cm s-1 collides obliquely with a 500 g ball moving at 50
cm s-1 in the opposite direction. After the collision, the first ball move with a speed of 15
cm s-1 at 30o to its initial direction. What is the velocity of the second ball?
7. A ball with mass 0.4 kg and velocity 4.2 ms-1 makes a head-on collision with another ball
of mass 0.2 kg which is at rest. After the collision, both balls stick together and moves up a
ramp which makes an angle 30o with the horizontal as in FIGURE 1. Neglecting friction,
determine the maximum height reached by the ball on the ramp.
8. FIGURE 2 shows a 1.5 kg ball hanging from a ceiling by a 150 cm string intially at 40 o
with the vertical. When released it collides elastically with a 3.0kg box at rest on a smooth
surface. After collision the box moves and compresses a spring of spring constant 800 N m-

1. A centrifuge in a medical laboratory rotates at an angular speed of 3600 rev per min. When
switched off, it rotates through 50 revolutions before coming to rest. Find the constant
angular acceleration of the centrifuge.
2. A rotor initially rotating at an angular speed of 0.6 rad s-1 increases its speed with an
angular acceleration of 0.7 rad s-2. Find the angle through which the rotor rotates before
reaching a final speed of 2.2 rad s-1 .
3. A coin with a diameter of 2.40 cm is dropped on edge onto a horizontal surface. The coin
starts out with an initial angular speed of 18.0 rad s-1 and rolls in a straight line without
slipping. If the rotation slows with an angular acceleration of 1.90 rad s-2, how far does the
coin roll before coming to rest?
4. A pulley is rotating at 30 rps slows down uniformly to 20 rps in 2 s. Calculate the total
number of revolutions it makes to a complete stop.
5. A car moves at constant speed of 100 km hr -1 for 2 hours. Find the number of revolutions
that the wheel makes during this time if the diameter of the wheel is 0.4 m.
6. A rotating wheel requires 3.0 s to rotate 37.0 revolutions. Its angular velocity at the end of

7. The blades in a blender rotate at a rate of 6500 rpm. When the motor is turned off during
operation, the blades slow to rest in 3.0 s. What is the angular acceleration as the blades

11. A fan rotating at 500 rpm slows down uniformly for 30.0 s. During this time it had
made 200 complete revolutions. What is its speed at the end of this time. What is
the extra time needed for the fan to completely stop.
12. A toy wheel is made to spin by pulling the end of a string wrapped around its body.
The radius of the wheel is 2.0 cm and the length of the string is 64.0 cm. If
someone pulls the string so as to give the wheel a uniform angular acceleration of
12 rad s-2, what will be the angular speed of the wheel when the string is fully
unwound?

14. A pulley of radius 5.0 cm attched to a motor is used to raise a box. When the motor
is started, it accellerates uniformly to 20 rev s-1 in 2.0 s. Calculate how high has the
box been raised during this time.
