Water facts
Water or ice covers about 80% of the Earth. Only 1% of the Earths water is suitable for human needs. 97% is salt water in oceans and 2% is ice.
An average person can survive for 2 months without food but less than a week without drinking water. The human body losses 3-3.5 litres of
water in an average day. This may be increased by exercise and climatic conditions. An average tap flows at a rate of 20 litres/ minute,
depending on how far it is turned on.

Installation manual
General information & pre-purchase guide
Pre-purchase guide
1. Determine Capacity & Location:
litres/gallons, maximum height and diameter and indoor or outdoor installation.
2. Determine surface, underground or elevated height installation.
3. Specify fitting locations.
4. Specify style and shape of the tank to suit your location.
5. As we make tanks for other purposes rather than storage of water, you must specify the product, specific gravity rating of the
product and fitting material. Refer our chemical resistance guide.
Operating parameters
Temperature
1. Generally the specific gravity of our standard tanks for water storage are based on product temperature of 100oF.
2. Contact our customer care for the tank designs of product storage temperature up to 150oF and above.
Pressure
Atmospheric pressure must be maintained in the tank at all times; vacuum must be = 0.
Venting
This is very important in chemical storage.
Vent length < 3 feet
1. Screen - vent size must exceed size of fill fitting by 2 inches.
2. No-Screen - vent size must exceed size of fill fitting by 1 inch.
3. Emergency Vent - Weighted hinged manway not required.
Vent length > 3 feet
1. Vent size must exceed size of fill fitting by 2 inches.
2. Emergency Vent Weighted hinged manway required.
Plumbing
Flexible connection required when pump is fitted directly to the tank to preserve warranty; allows for tank expansion/contraction and reduce
pump/piping vibration stress on the tank (see plumbing instructions).
Installation
1. Review Installation Manual
2. Hydro test (Water test) for 24 hrs after installation (necessary for storage of costly chemicals).
Heat Maintenance Control
Check temperature for chemical storage tanks. Heating requirements vary depending on temperature maintenance, ambient temperature and
wind conditions.
Tank Colour
Linear Polyethylene (LLDPE) natural Black available. (For optional colours, contact customer service).
General Information
1. Nominal Capacity = Calculated tank capacity to top straight side wall.
2. All cylindrical vertical tanks above 400 gallons / 2000 litres are manufactured in accordance with ASTM D 1998 standard.
3. Gallonage / litre markers can be provided on request; but they may not be precise in measuring.
Safety checklist
It is a requisite for any chemical storage tank to confirm the chemical compatibility of the product stored with that of the polyethylene tank and fittings.
Vent tanks: When the tank is filled or emptied, vent tanks are indispensable to prevent the development of pressure or vacuum. Unrestricted (no
screen) vent size must exceed size of tanks largest inlet or outlet nozzles by one inch. Larger vents are needed for exceptionally high rates of intake
and discharge. The vents should have the size to limit maximum pressure or vacuum to 6 inches of water (0.217 psi). If the tank has two inlets or
outlets, add the size of two nozzles together to determine the minimum vent size. Screened vent size must exceed the size of tanks largest inlet
or outlet nozzles by 2 inches.
28
Prevent excessive heat near or inside the tank: Polyethylene tanks are designed for maximum continuous
temperature of 1000F.
Acquire and use Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the product stored.
Regard tanks as confined spaces: Follow proper entry procedures.
Make sure ladders are properly secured, (especially where ladder fixing facility are provided) on top and bottom.
At a time allow only one person on a ladder.
Avoid standing and working on tank domes: The surface is flexible and slippery. There is no weight or load rating
for the domes.
Dont move tanks while holding liquid and never allow personnel under the tank when it is being lifted.
Uninstalled parts
Parts are sometimes shipped uninstalled to prevent damages in transit. These parts are usually bagged or boxed inside the tank. Parts
should be removed prior to setting the tank in place. Please check before reporting missing parts.
Unloading instructions
Dont throw the tank to the ground from the truck.
Small tanks can be lifted and placed on the floor without any excessive impact to the tank.
Bigger tanks should be rolled on a slope ramp from the truck and rolled to the place of storage.
Dont drag the tank on the floor or any rough surfaces as it will damage the surface of the tank.
By forklift
Bigger and heavier tanks can be lifted by forklift.
Make sure that the forklift tines are smooth and free from Chain
burrs or sharp hedges.
Use extended tines if handling a large tank.
Tie the tank to the forklift mast if there is a possibility of
rolling or sliding. Eye
By crane using manway (manhole) Steel Pipe
Use the usual method of rigging and lifting the tank with
slings or use a pipe and chain in the manway (manhole) The pipe should be 42 to 46 long
and minimum of 3 diameter
of the tank as shown.
29
Installation checklist
Check and retrieve the uninstalled parts usually shipped inside the tank.
Locate the tank wisely so as to protect the tank from traffic damage and excessive heat. Our cylindrical vertical
tank is designed for aboveground use only.
Underground tanks are available and are designed for underground purpose only.
For chemical tanks protect the personnel from chemical danger in the event of a leak. Use adequate secondary
containment according to particular danger to meet governmental and industry requirements.
Use Teflon tape, paste or both at all thread connections. Do not over tight.
Flexible connections are required to preserve warranty which allows tank expansion / contraction and reduces pump / piping vibration
stress on the tank.
Support hoses, piping and valves using structural support independent of tank sidewall and dome.
Entire bottom of the tank must be supported by, either a clean, smooth concrete foundation or a firm sand bed with protected boundaries
to avoid the sand to disperse from its base. A metal stand approved by the engineers in Polytanks Limited also can be used. Failure to
provide proper foundation and support will be considered as misuse and will lead to void the warranty. Fill the tank with water to its capacity
and Hydrotest for 24 hours after installation. This test is very essential when the tank is used for chemical and costly materials.

Stainless steel fitting
1. Detach the stainless steel fitting by removing the nuts from the stud bolts. Remove the stainless steel outer plate.
Keep the remainder of the fitting along with nuts and washer safely for later use.
2. Mark the hole patterns on the outside of the tank with the outer plate as a template.
3. Locate the centre of the large tank fitting hole by drawing X through the centre of the bolted holes.
(refer illustration below).
4. Make a hole with drilling machine and hole saw. The size of the hole must be smaller than the hole in the outer plate
and should match with the outer diameter (O.D.) of the fitting, which passes through the hole.
5. Drill the stud bolt holes with either 9/16 drill bit for W diameter studs or 3/8 drill bit for 5/16 diameter studs.
6. Brush away any scrapings around the hole.
7. The tank is now ready for fitting. Install the fitting from inside, keeping the gasket on the studs against the back plate of the fitting. Slide
the outer plate to the stud bolts that are protruding from the tank wall.
8. Replace the nuts and washers on the stud bolts. Tight the nuts by pulling down diametrically opposite to each other using a torque
wrench. Tight bolts according to the sequence shown below. Tight until the gasket is fully compressed. (Approximately 15/20 ft lbs on
the torque wrench). W nuts should be torqued to 30 in lbs and 5/16 nuts to 12 ft lbs. Make sure that the threads of the bolts are
lubricated before tighting.
9. Check the fitting. The gasket should be fully compressed and the outer stainless steel plate should be connected intact to the wall of the
tank.
10. Hydrotest the tank with standing water for at least 24 hours before using.

Bolted-flange fittings
1. Detach the fittings. If the hole is not drilled, place the flange against the tank wall in the desired location and use
as a template for drilling holes. Use a hole saw of either the same size as the fitting or up to a W size larger.
2. Do not make hot rods to make holes, which will weaken the tank wall.
3. With the gasket installed, put the stud bolts through the holes keeping its head inside the tank and the threads
outside.
4. Place the full-face flange gasket over the bolts on the outer surface of the tank.
5. Place the flange over the gasket and the stud threads with the hub of the flange facing out.
6. Put a washer and lock on each stud bolts. Lubricate the threads of the bolts with anti-seize lubricant.
7. Tight the nuts by pulling down diametrically opposite to each other using a torque wrench. Tight bolts according to the sequence shown
below. Tight until the gasket is fully compressed. (Approximately 15/20 ft lbs).
8. Check the fitting. Gasket must be fully compressed and the outer flange fitted down evenly.
9. Thread piping into the fitting. Use Teflon sealant or any other thread sealant on the pipe threads. Do not over tight.
10. Flange for pipe sizes 4 and above must be curved to match the outside diameter of the tank.
11. Hydrotest the tank with standing water for at least 24 hours before using.
