CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background
Some people argue that living in second culture can be riding a roller
coaster. Changing scenery, stepping outside my comfort zone, and
experiencing different cultures are inspiring and change my life. Its the side
that always glamorous, but its inherent in living away from home, and its the
mental process of acclimating to a new culture and getting used to a foreign
country or town, and I like to call this process as The Culture Shock Roller
Coaster.
Whether I am thinking of moving to a new country, traveling for an
extended period of time, or just moving within my own country, I will always
experience some version of culture shock. When I first arrive to a new place I
will become a curious observer, taking in the changes and absorbing the new
culture. By the end of my roller coaster ride though, I will have an
irreplaceable perspective gained through experience and appreciation.
I think, no one is immune to the Culture Shock Roller Coaster. I can get
better at acclimating to new lifestyles and I can become more tolerant of
differences, but there will be an adjustment period with every big move in my
life. Ive found that the highs and lows depend on how drastic of a change I
make. My ability to adapt, the length of I stay, and the support systems I have
in place will affect my ability to handle culture shock.
In this paper, I will tell the readers about my experience of culture
shock in some place. First I will tell you my culture shock from South
Indralaya to Palembang, and the second experience is culture shock from South
Indralaya to Baturaja.

B. Objective of Study
1. To know about the cultural differences in some place.

CHAPTER II
THE CULTURE SHOCK ROLLER COASTER

A. My Experience from South Indralaya to Palembang

When I am in the 5th grades of elementary schools, my family moved to
Palembang because my fathers work required our family to move to
Palembang. In South Indralaya, I have so many friends and I think that I am an
active child and always wanted to talk. But when my family and I moved to
Palembang, I felt like I cant be like before when I lived in Indralaya. I am very
nervous when I came to my new school. There are some dialect and language
that different from Indralaya. So, when I came in to the class, greet to my new
friends and introduce myself, I felt so nervous and felt like I am an idiot. I
never hear and talk with Palembang language before. So, when I introduced
myself to my new friends, I saw that some my friends are razz to me, I dont
know why they razz, I think maybe my dialect that so plebeian or my language
that different with them. Because of that, I be a passive child and just have
some friends. The way they interact to each other is also different with my
culture.
Not only language that different from these two places, but some things
are also different. Such foods, tradition, games, family value, and so on. In
Palembang, when they talk to their parents or the older people, sometimes they
talk with high intonation and its so different from my hometown. In my
hometown, childrens are impolite to use high intonation when they talk to
their parents or older people. Because when our family moved I am still young,
so I will tell you about the games. Maybe its not important. All of the games
in my hometown can I played, and maybe I am the best player. But in
Palembang, even though the name of game is same, but the roles are so
different. I cant understand their games. The traditional culture also different,
Towards mahgrib in my hometown, my friends and I went to the mosque to
practice of Al-Quran (in Bahasa Ngaji) but it different from Palembang,
there when towards mahgrib the children still play outside the house.

B. My Experience from South Inderalaya to Baturaja
Our family live in Palembang just for 5 years because my father work
is done, so we go back to our hometown, South Indralaya. When I graduate
from Vocational School, I choose to continue my education in Baturaja
University, so I live in Baturaja for some years in a boarding house.
In Baturaja, I found so many cultural differences. Weather in language,
food, traditional culture, some values, and religion, there are different.
Religion, for example, I know that there are so many religions, in my nearest
environment, I just meet and know moslem people, but in Baturaja, I found
some religion. Because I never know someone who has different religion, so I
dont know how to interact with them with right manner, and so on.
The language and dialect that use here is so different from my
hometown. The first day I arrive in Baturaja, I just has a little bit
conversations with some people. Sometimes I dont understand what they
talking about, so I just silent.
So, I think the actual communication and culture cannot be separated.
Because of communication is culture and culture is communication, so
communication with cultural activities are closely related. However, the
characters tend to introduce our culture to experience, a different experience
that brings us to a different perception of the world. If there is meaning in
intercultural communication differences, and these differences can be
accepted by each culture as it is, the communication that occurs is expected to
be effective. But, if we interpret other cultures through the lens of our culture,
the effect is the opposite of communication. This is unique intercultural
communication empathize with others of different cultural background with
us.

CHAPTER III
CLOSING

CONCLUSION
From some of the above activities, I got new knowledge about the
culture of each region. Those are apparently a lot of similarities but also have
many differences. At first I was less able to adjust, but in the end I could adjust
in a way to follow and enjoy the activity. Cultural difference is actually not a
barrier for us to communicate with other people who are around us. Wherever
possible we have to be very clever to sort out and adjust to the environment in
which we are.
